They have done very well and it has been very good experience dealing with Thompson. We found out that there was a leak in the upstairs bathroom and they found it when we were with them. There was some problem with a sink and my husband was trying to run a snake down, but, nothing was happening. I looked outside and there was a Thompson truck outside, so, I went to them and the guy actually came in with me to look at the situation. He called his company to set up an appointment and they finally repaired it. I was happy with their price.
Description of Work: They fixed a plumbing issue in the kitchen sink and other leaks in the house that saved us some water damage. They replaced the gas furnaces and A/C systems for us.

I have used another provider for many years but it has been very hard to get an appointment that is convenient for me. I work full time, and so it is very hard to get an early morning appointment or a Saturday appointment, and so I switched to Thompson. Another reason for switching is the price offered by Thompson.
Description of Work: We used Thompson Heating & Cooling during last fall to do maintenance work on my furnace.

We responded to a postcard we received in the mail advertising a great deal on a furnace/AC combo. When the salesman came out to discuss the deal, it appeared to be a "bait-and-switch" because by the time all the costs were considered, the postcard deal wasn't appreciably cheaper than the next higher option, which wasn't much less than the most expensive option. He didn't have brochures describing each level of product, just one pamphlet about the mid-range option. The salesman asked if we liked jokes and asked if he could tell us one...we said "go for it." His jokes (he had a couple) were definitely inappropriate for a professional situation. His inspection of our current system was not terribly thorough, but he did say our gas shut-off valve would need to be replaced because it would have to be turned with a wrench and we (two women) would likely never be able to operate it ourselves. (This turned out not to be true.) We asked if we would get a programmable thermostat and he said they would give us a "free" one but we would have to install it ourselves unless we could talk the installer into doing it. We were not comfortable with this meeting at all and decided after he left to check the Better Business Bureau report. (We weren't Angie's List members yet) The BBB gave Thompson a D-minus. We crossed them off our list at that point. The salesman called back a few days later to see if we were still interested and we told him that the BBB report was "pretty bad." His response was, "That's not bad! That's not bad, considering the thousands of customers we have!"

My AC unit is roughly 10 years old. It worked but didn’t seem to work as well as it once did. I called Thompson to come out for their $75 AC tune up special. The tech arrived on time, was clean cut and very professional. He spent sometime diagnosing the system. The condenser coil was very dirty, The contactor needed to be replaced and the unit also needed a “hard start kit”. The tech also fixed a leak from the condenser pan that was dripping on the furnace. I had him go ahead and make the repairs the price was $845. I liked the work they did and the manner the job was completed. I was shown two prices for the repair. A standard price and a club member price. The club member price was roughly 20% less than the standard price. The catch you had to agree to join “The Club” for $19.95 per month. (they have other club levels and different prices / discounts associated with them). I felt that even the club price was on the high side. I’m not sure i will see any real benefit from the club membership. They offer priority scheduling, set discounts etc. I’ll roll with the membership for 12 months and see if it pans out. I would much rather they offer a more reasonable rate for everything and priority service for repeat customers. Not sure I like paying for preferred treatment / pricing..

We had a service agreement with them but it was not worth it. He was telling us that a new A/C unit would cost $10,000 when in reality it would cost $4,000. I would not recommend them.

1st appointment: took a half day of vacation. Late in the day, Thompson rep called and said they were way behind and had to cancel. appt set for 2 weeks later. 2nd appt: supposed to arrive 3-5pm. Thompson rep called and left voicemail saying they would need to reschedule again. When I called back, they agreed to get someone here as promised (though it was after the 3-5pm timeframe promised). Technician did his job well enough, but was clearly instructed to attempt to sell me a service contract (a little irritatiung since I was already angry about the difficulty in getting them to come out in the first place). Tecnician checked the system and found I needed up to 2# of freon added for which he wanted another $250 (!!) to do (on top of the service call). I have had the same service done before by Potts and others for less than $100 (inc the service call). He did not seem surprised at all that I was not willing to pay that. Next time I'll call Potts. Thankfully, all I wasted on this company was $58. Potts--I beg your forgiveness! I'll be calling tomorrow!

The technician was prompt in responding to our call for service. Our furnace had stopped working and would not run for more than a minute when we tried to restart it. The technician spent about 3 minutes looking at the furnace before he told us that it had a cracked heat exchanger which is why the furnace was tripping off, part of a safety mechanism to keep the furnace from leaking dangerous carbon monoxide into the house. He told us the replacement of the heat exchanger would be $2,500, but since the furnace was 17 years old that was probably not worth it. He showed us a book of furnaces they offered. When we asked for the literature on the furnaces he told us they do not offer that, we would just have to take notes on the features and prices he quoted. He provided nothing in writing. I thought it strange he did not give us literature and decided to get several other quotes on furnace replacement all of which were lower than Thompson's pricing. After 4 days without heat and several bids on furnace replacement we had another company come out to give us a quote on a new furnace. Imagine our surprise and outrage when we found out that our furnace did not have a cracked heat exchanger and was only shutting off because of a gunked up switch that he fixed in 5 minutes! Our furnace has run fine ever since. I called Thompson and spoke with a manger who told me that the technician should have used a camera to view the crack in the heat exchanger and should have shown it to me. I told the manager he did not do that and he said he would check the disk in the technician's camera to see if he had taken pictures. A few days later I received a call from the manager saying that he would like to send another tech out to camera the furnace and be sure that we didn't have a cracked heat exchanger. I declined the offer and asked for my money back. I received a refund check about a month later. I was very happy with the manager's response to my concerns, but I will never call them again nor will I ever recommend them. The actions of the technician were inept at best and unscrupulous at worst. Either way it cost us 4 days without heat, the time of several other companies that came out to give us estimates on replacing our furnace and could have cost us $4500 unnecessarily if it had not been for the honesty of another heating company. I am only giving them a D and not an F since the manager was reasonable. After this experience I tell anyone who is in need of service to avoid Thompson Heating.
Description of Work: A technician came to the house to diagnose the reason why our furnace had shut off and would not run. He said we had a cracked heat exchanger and gave us quotes on a new furnace.

We have used them four years, and they are very prompt, dependable, and very clean. They have always been very responsive as far as making any repairs for us.

I called them because they advertise they have emergency service, that they guarantee the time they arrive, and that they are the best. I called and was told I would get a call back in a few minutes. After half an hour I called back, got a hold of someone and explained my problem. They put me on hold and then told me they could not send someone out. I voiced my frustration and stated that they advertised being able to respond and she put me on hold again, came back and then said again that they could not advertise. I called another company off of Angies list, Bob Fish plumbing and they where here in 15 minutes. It is upsetting that a company who advertising that they are there for you, can't respond when you need them.

They showed up on time and explained the inspection process and answered my questions. Due the age of the furnace and the cost of fixing the existing furnace I chose to replace it with a new and more efficient model. They were able to show me all of the options based on the size of my house, etc. They were able to install the new furnace the next day. The installation crew was just as professional and friendly as the first technician. I would hire them again.

Really we have two stories to tell. We had a poor experience with the original plumber that came out. We caught him in several instances where what we were told was incorrect. We originally called on a Friday night and the first plumber didn't come out until the next morning, but we had to again call Saturday morning to schedule an appointment and have him come out. The water coming in our basement kept getting worse, but he insisted it would be ok to just let it run through our basement. On Monday we asked to speak with another plumber and got a master plumber to come out. Once he started working with us, we had a good experience. He even left a key for the curb key lock so we could turn off the water when we were not using it to avoid further water damage to our basement. We also found a huge sink hole in our front yard that we were concerned about, and this really help put our mind as ease that we could turn on and off at will. We were given two quotes - one to "pull the line," this was to try to save the tree in our front yard and avoid excavating the entire front yard. Unfortunately, this didn't work and we ended up excavating anyway. I think 2 things would have made this experience better for us. First, have a master plumber come out to assess the work in the first place. Secondly, I was very disappointed that we had to keep calling them for updates and scheduling things. Our problem was called into them on Friday night and we didn't get it fixed until the next Wednesday. I think if we would have not been so persistent it could have been over a week. We think that this was a little pricey for the work, but we did get other estimates for higher. We do have a contract and are a preferred customer, and I think this helped us a little bit.

They sent one of their AC/Heating salesmen to give us an estimate to replace our AC and Furnace. The AC died, and our furnace was just as cheap so it was time to upgrade the contractor specials put in when the home was first built. Unfortunately, the salesman did not know his information very well and when we asked questions he could not really answer them. We had done our homework and knew approx. what size, efficiency, etc that we wanted in the system. He was at our home for almost 2 hours telling us stories, and not helping to sell their product. SO, when their estimate came back almost twice as high as the other three groups, we decided to stop working with this company.
Description of Work: We did not end up going with Thompson because their estimate was higher than the 3 others we received for the work to be done. We have used Thompson in the past for other AC and plumping work. The work they have performed in the past was fine, not great, but definitely on the high side of cost.

We had been customers of this company for 2 yrs. when we contacted them for a furnace repair during a Feb. cold spell. We were informed that they were too busy to come out. We told them that we had a 10 mo. old baby and could not wait until the next day for a service call and then asked again if they could do anything. The woman put us on hold to check the schedule and told us that they could make it out that same day if we purchased an expensive service contract. We were appalled at this response. It was a highly unethical thing to do and we felt that they were trying to take advantage of us when we were vulnerable. We would have preferred a simple ''no'' response in this situation. If a technician had time to respond to someone who had purchased a new service contract, they had time in the schedule to service our furnace. As a result we will not use the company again. If you can't trust a company to be there for you when you really need them, then you can't trust them at all.
Description of Work: The company was contacted to repair our furnace because it stopped working during February. We had an unfortunate experience at this time and have since discontinued our service. Our home was only 5 yrs. old and it took a technician from another company 10 min. to replace a switch. All prior service calls (standard maintenance) were handled with professionalism.

We got an estimate for a new air conditioner, with a new air filter. We thought the price was extremely high and decided to get other estimates. Though we have dealt with Thompson's for many years and have been satisfied with their work(overall grade of B), we have found that their prices have become prohibitive. We went with Locke's Heating and Cooling and the price was $1300 less with an added feature

WE USED TO HAVE LOW WATER PRESSURE, AND THE PLUMBER MADE AN ADJUSTMENT TO SOMETHING, AND RAISED OUR WATER PRESSURE. THE HEATING REP WAS ABLE TO FIX A PROBLEM WE WERE HAVING WITH VIBRATION WHILE THE FURNACE WAS RUNNING. HE DID SOME CLEANING ON OUR FURNACE AND ADJUSTMENTS ($195) AND ENDED UP FIXING THE PROBLEM. WE'VE HAD NUMEROUS OTHER PEOPLE COME OUT TO TRY AND FIX IT AND THEY WERE ABLE TOO! THE REPS WERE VERY METICULOUS, AND I AM REALLY HAPPY WITH THEIR SERVICE.

GIVEN THE FACT THAT ALL THAT WAS DONE WAS A PILOT HEAT ROD WAS REPLACED, THE PRICE WAS OUTRAGEOUS. AT THE TIME, I DIDN'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, I ONLY KNEW I NEEDED HEAT. SINCE THEN, I HAVE LEARNED OTHER COMPANIES WOULD PERFORM THE SAME WORK FOR LESS THAN $50. I AM DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO DO THE WORK MYSELF ONCE HE SHOWED ME WHAT WAS WRONG, BUT THEN HE SCARED ME INTO THINKING THAT THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FURNACE THAT COULD KILL ME. DUE TO THIS 'SCARE,' I DECIDED TO PAY HIM TO CHECK THE SYSTEM OVER, WHICH TOOK 30 MINUTES, AND THEN HE REPLACED THE PART WITH THE MOST EXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE HE HAD AVAILABLE, TELLING ME IT WAS THE BEST CHOICE. WHEN THE BILL CAME I WAS A LITTLE SHOCKED, BUT THOUGHT, ''OH WELL, I NEEDED HEAT.'' NOW, I THINK MAYBE THEY RAILROADED AN IGNORANT MAN FOR ALL THEY COULD GET.

I WOULD NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY AGAIN. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO GET THE WORKMAN TO LEAVE, AND HE RECOMMENDED ALL SORTS OF 'REPAIRS' AND THINGS I DID NOT ASK FOR, CHARGING ME FAR MORE THAN OTHER COMPANIES DO FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AND TELLING ME I HAD A $116 SAVINGS. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT HE WAS GOING TO GET ME TO PAY HIM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
Description of Work: I CALLED FOR A ROUTINE FURNACE AND AIR CONDITIONING TUNEUP. THE WORKMAN 'INSPECTED' THE SYSTEM AND RECOMMENDED NUMEROUS REPAIRS, TELLING ME THAT I NEEDED POWER BOOSTERS, ETC. HE HAD A HUGE CHECKLIST HE WORKED FROM. HE THEN ITEMIZED ALL HIS 'WORK' AND GAVE ME A 'DISCOUNT' FROM THE SUPPOSED REGULAR PRICE.
