So far we have been vey happy with their service.
Description of Work: We pay $19.95 monthly for the service club which gives us a free annual furnace and a/c inspection. Anything they find that needs attention, they bring it to our attention and we decide to buck up for it or not.

They came in for maintence on Friday, all they did was turn the hot water heater off, and didn't tell me what was broken/what the problem was. I had no idea they were turning it off. They left me 5:15 Friday afternoon (with 60 people coming for a party on Sunday). I called the company and complained, and they said they'd have someone call me Saturday to re-turn on my hot water heater so I'd have access to it over the weekend. Nobody called, nobody came. Monday I called a competitor to come out, and they came out yesterday with a hot water heater and realized it was too big. They came out today with a new model, and they are telling me today that they cannot cut into the gas line because we'd have to shut the gas off to the entire house. This would make them liable for restarting the furnace (from Thompson's product line). We then called Thompson back, they finally came back out today, after I was on the phone with them for 3 hours (on hold, hungup on, couldn't talk to anybody, etc). Finally a gentlemen came at 2:00, took a look, and understood/sympathized. He gave me the above pricing ($922/$700), but I wanted a quote for a 50 gallon hot water heater (we have a 40 gallon). He went out to call-in for a quote for my request, and he came back and all he gave me was the original bill to re-route the gas line, there was no quote for the 50 gallon water heater. I asked him I could talk to the person who made this decesion, and the man told me "I wasn't allowed to talk to that person". Dave Crook was the person back at the office who veto'ed our requests and wouldn't allow the technician to help us (Dave still won't talk to me, they keep putting it off to someone else). I feel like they blackmailed me into a situation, basically saying "take our prices, or shove it!" I would never reccommend Thompson to anyone. They are big into advertising, but don't care of their customers (me). I have already paid this company $1000's from work in 2009, and now they are telling me they can't route things to have access to the water heater.
Description of Work: They gave me a quote for $922.00 standard, or $700 as a member, to re-reroute a gas line for a furnace that they put in April 2009. I need this re-rerouting because what's there now leaves me no access to my hot water heater which went out last Friday.

Response from Help Plumbing Heating Cooling and Electric
On December 14th Thompson received a call from our client stating she was upset because our Service Specialist was at her home earlier in the day and turned off her water heater. The unit was Red Tagged and turned off due to a gas valve leak. Our Service Specialist quoted several different Water Heater options. Thompson also communicated that we cannot turn the system back on as it is unsafe. Our Service Specialist what was in her home, called the client back right away. On 12/19th the client called in again upset that she was without hot water. Stated she wanted to have another company come and install a Water Heater but they would not due to the placement of the gas line. The client felt that we should come out and move the gas line because it was interfering with the new Water Heater installation and the company she was having do it would not. The gas line meets code and passed inspection when the furnace was installed. We have sent numerous Service Specialists and provided numerous quotes with the goal of resolving this issue for our client.

Great experience. They called before arriving as pre-arranged. The job took most of the day but it was seemless for me as they were professional and spent most of the time in the basement.
Description of Work: Andy repaired a fixture in my bathroom and then unclogged a drain in the basement which has been clogging up from time to time. He investigated it further and was able to explain why it was occurring more frequently. The sewer pipe was clogged via tree roots (have 2 large trees out front) and the house is over 75years old. Some of the clay piping was broken. Andy and team installed a sewer pipe liner through the basement without impacting the yard/driveway or flooring, to the street. The team scheduled the appointment and came on time. They were there for the day and did their job. Thanks!

We're "members" with Thompson Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, so the tuneup was "free". The membership fee we pay is $20/month. We've had them out twice a year for the past three years to service our HVAC system, which is now 12+ years old. On one visit last year they replaced some components in the furnace - the cost for that was around $400. Other than that the tuneups seem to be keeping our old system running well, which is better than paying 10K or more to get a new system. The service technicians always show up on time and clean up after themselves afterwards. The cost ends up being $120 per tuneup if we don't use any other services, so it's a bit more expensive than what some other companies would charge just to do a tuneup, however the membership gets you priority scheduling and significant discounts on other services and repairs, so I kinda look at it like a bit of insurance. I checked around and the repair we paid 400 for would have cost a lot more as an emergency call from somebody else. The first few times they came out I expected them to try to pressure me into buying a new system since ours is so old, but so far they have not done that and that's a good thing.

The experience was much like getting a sales pitch. They have plenty of detailed paperwork about their company and reputation and why I should by a new system from them but I did not feel like I had a sufficient tune up for efficiency and safety. Positive point: This company does support Veterans.
Description of Work: I called for the Furnace Tune-up offered at $78. They sent a guy more interested in making a sale of a new furnace and he said he completed a "Diagnostic" instead of the tune up then he gave me a list of costs to replace all the different parts of my furnace & A/C.

Very well. Dave, the technician, was very thorough, checked the line before and after with a camera, removed the material (e.g., toilet paper) from the clogged area in the basement vertical stack and made sure the water was flowing normally when he finished. I used Thompson because hey were running a main line cleaning special of $97, which is what I paid. When I had similar work done by Roto-Rooter about a year ago, I paid nearly $200!
Description of Work: Removed clog in vertical stack in basement that had caused a backup with water leaking from the floor drain in the laundry room and blocked water flow from first floor toilet. Checked to be sure water flow was back to normal and that there were no leaks.

Josh was very polite, professional and thorough in performing the job. He was on-time and called prior to arrival which was very helpful.
Description of Work: Josh performed a tune-up for my furnace and assessed the condition of my air conditioner. He replaced a blower and inducer motor and capacitator in my system. He was thorough in his review with me regarding the condition of my system (no tune-up since installed-7yr old system). He also was helpful in preparing another service provider pre-show up to bring the correct equipment for their visit, thus saving me lots of time.

I called Thompson on (I think) a Thursday. The offered to come out on Saturday, but I requested Sunday because of other plans for Saturday. On Sunday, the plumber arrived on time (they actually called to come out earlier in the day, but we were not home). I took him into the bathroom and showed him the problem. I explained that the bathroom had just been remodeled less than two years ago and this was the second time the wax seal had failed. Last time, the remodel was still under warranty so our contractor came out and fixed it. I explained that I was hoping an actual plumber could fix it in such a way that it lasted longer than a year. He quoted a price of about $400 after an online coupon was applied, but said that since this was a Kohler toilet, he needed a jumbo wax ring, which he didn't have on his truck. He would come back on Monday and perform the repair. This seemed expensive and I didn't want to have to deal with it on Monday, but I agreed anyway. After he left, I checked my records from when I had the same repair done in another bathroom by another company and confirmed my feeling that price was way to high. I called another company who came out and fixed the issue within about an hour's time for about half the cost. I called Thompson back the next day and cancelled, but I went ahead and paid them $49 for the service call (they had informed me that there was a $49 service call fee when I initially set up the appointment). There are a couple of things that are interesting/frustrating about this experience. First, wax rings are not expensive items and I specifically called them to have a wax ring replaced. It seems that given the very large trucks they drive, they would carry whatever wax rings they may need. It's not like it's a $50 part. Second, the plumber from another company that actually performed the work didn't know what a "jumbo wax ring" is and didn't know why it would be necessary. I'm obviously not a plumber, so I can't say whether the first guy was making stuff up or whether the second guy didn't know something he should have. Still, something seems odd. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Thompson for plumbing work.

We had purchased a yearly tune-up and duct cleaning to make sure AC and Heat were running properly. (Previous owners had worked with them so we just followed suit.) This service costs roughly $125/year...worth it for peace of mind, When they came out to do the tune-up, the appt quickly became a sales pitch for almost every air and water appliance in our house. I had bought the tune-up service for peace of mind, and felt more anxious after they left if I didn't purchase every appliance they showed. They literally suggested we replace our heater, AC, water heater and install a water softener and a water filter. This all felt urgent because mentions of fire, carbon monoxide, bursting pipes and broken toilets were all mentioned if I didn't buy these things. They then went on to provide an estimate and brochures and had the sales guy "follow up" that week. This was just not what I had hoped for or expected when purchasing this service. I felt I had basically paid to get a sales pitch.

sold my mothers home on which she had an annual service contract. i had tried to cancel after he house sold, but was told could not unless paid off the service contract for over $200. ask how could owe that much because paid 20 per month and only had a spring and fall done (1 year) and the house was sold anyway. since would not let me cancel contract, transferred to my house for this fall tuneup. when the service was performed the tech said that i needed outside work and inside work on the heat pump. the price for his estimate was somewhere between 3 and 4 thousand. he highly suggested puting in a new unit because even after repairs would be a old unit (about 10 years) and other things could go wrong. told him did not have the money for any of this and would just have to deal with the problems when they happen. he also said a new unit would be around 10 to 15 thousand and I could put it on time payments. again, i said no. when he left, called my usual company. paid for the year contract of 182 for the spring and fall service feeling that it was worth the second opinion.. when he was done with the service the paperwork stated everything fine. i questioned him to be sure nothing was wrong, stating i did not want problems coming up during the winter. he stated that the unit checked out fine. he found no problemes with the inside or outside units. he could not guarantee that something could not go wrong later, but currently everything was good. when he left, i call thompson and told them what happened. that i wanted this contract and my monthly auto deduction from checking cancelled. she stated would not do that. that if i had not had the october service provided i could but that that trip started the year over again. I said only made the transfer because they refused to cancel earlier. let her know in no uncertain terms that this contract is cancelled. she offered to give me 3 month free --- but told her did not want them in my house. that they had shown me dishonestly and would never feel good dealing with them. In order to keep them from charging my card monthly for a service i never should have had to transfer to begin with.... i had to cancel my charge card. i told her that i was going to do this and to do whatever they felt necessary. i am very very upset with thompson. frankly, i don't care what thompson thinks about this rating, they very well know how upset I am. made no bones about it.
Description of Work: supposed to be a fall tune-up/checkup. spent more time trying to sell repairs and a new heatpump. opened unit and pointed to the inside stuff that was bad, but what the heck do i know. could have said anything.

About 2 days before leaving town, I noted water accumulating above the drain in the laundry room floor--& didn't dare risk leaving with the possibility of it overflowing in my absence!! Thompson was great about accommodating my urgent need for repair & kindly scheduled a plumber for Sat., the day before my departure. I was told there was a "special" on drain cleaning, & as a "member" ($20/month) it would cost $97. Altho the appointment was for 1-3pm, Charlie K. didn't arrive until nearly 5pm (he did call ahead to tell me he was running late). I was grateful he was willing to work so late on a Saturday! This turned out to be a big, nasty job: we had to get access to the main pipe behind a fiberboard divider. After I cleared out everything blocking access, Charlie cut out a flap, accessed the pipe, & ran the augur >75 feet out to the street. He also cleaned out what he could from the floor drain (the cover of which was embedded in the floor & couldn't be removed.) He said this service usually included visual inspection with a camera, all the way out to the street, but since he didn't have one on his truck, that could be scheduled later at no additional cost to me. He then cleaned up the mess & taped the flap back over the hole he cut. All told, he spent a total of 3 HOURS; I was amazed. At all times, he was extremely courteous, polite, respectful & professional. He allowed me to watch as much as I wanted, showed me the end result, & answered all my questions fully. (I offered to share my dinner, given the late hour & his long, extensive project, but he declined.) He really did a super job with a great attitude (he told me how much he enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of his work). Charlie was terrific, hard-working & very personable. He gets an A+! Given the time he spent, this turned out to be a real bargain, & I was most grateful to have this peace of mind before going out of town!

After reviewing Thompson on Angie's List, I had two jobs done on my house - one before I rented it out (master bathroom faucet repair in Oct 2011) and one after (garbage disposal replacement Mar 2012). After the first job, I was very happy with the service and joined the monthly membership program in order to ensure priority treatment in addition to discounts on future jobs. This would enable me to get service when needed without worrying about who to call. Now the plumbing in the master bathroom is leaking again and a basement shower is draining slowly. I scheduled an appointment almost two weeks ago to have the work done today and they called me up to reschedule my appointment because they had too many "emergencies". At 8am in morning? Sounds to me like they are short staffed. I only work from home on Fridays and next Friday is a holiday. So I would have to wait two more weeks for service? I expressed my frustration and indicated that I couldn't ask my tenants to wait two more weeks for the service. At this point I was told that the drain cleaning could not be performed at all since I am not living at the address. That would have been nice to know 12 months ago. Or even 8 months ago when a service technician was in the house doing work explicitly aware that it was tenant occupied. Or even a week ago when I made the appointment and mentioned meeting the plumber at the house. Instead, Thompson continued to take my 29.95/mo. I'm sure I missed something in the fine print but my bottom line message is that the monthly subscription is a rip-off similar to extended warranties. Wish I could get the $360 back or at least part of that minus any discount I got on the jobs. What a shame. If I had simply foregone the monthly service I'd probably still be happy with them. I would have known up front about the drain cleaning limitation and would have simply scheduled with someone else. Instead, they have put me in a bind, not to mention a bad mood. POed.

First, I am doing this from memory, so my prices and dates are not exact. Second, we have dealt with Thompson Heating and Cooling for many years. We have become "Members" where we pay about $20 a month and get free Air Conditioning and Furnace check ups. Third, we have bought a furnace from them. The price was a little more than I might have paid elsewhere but the service, cleanliness, attitude, punctuality were all so perfect. The furnace has run perfectly for five years now. Fourth, although we bought our AC from someone else, the Thompson club membership pays for it to be checked yearly. This spring they discovered a snake had crawled in and fried some components, which were replaced that day. Otherwise, when the hot weather came, we would have been without AC. Fifth, our water bill came in nearly 1/2 additional cost, and Thompson came out, found the toilet was cracked and leaking, and replaced the toilet... all in one evening.... for less than $600.... even though the floor was crooked which meant extra time plastering it into place. It is a high quality toilet and the work, attitude, and cleanliness were all excellent. I recommend Thompson for any Heating, Air Conditioning, or Plumbing needs. They are reliable, they take pride in their work, their people are drug tested and excellently trained, they give you what you need when you need it.

We were experiencing wildly fluctuating water pressures throughout the home. Vincent arrived promptly at the scheduled appointment time and began to troubleshoot the issue. He quickly determined that the whole-house pressure reducing valve had failed. He also knew to check the water heater pressure/temperature bypass valve (as this can open when the pressure in the home exceeds the water heaters preset pressure setting). As it turned out—there were signs that the valve had opened. He also suggested adding an expansion tank on the hot water heater since the installing plumber (not Thompson) did not provide one—perhaps to save costs on his bid. He explained that this simple device could save my water heater should the pressure in the system increase like we had seen. I also asked Vincent if there was anything he could do to improve the hot water delivery to our 2nd floor bathrooms. It takes several minutes of running showers/tubs to simply get hot water to these bathrooms. He recommended a recirculating pump/manifold at the most distant run on the hot water line. This entailed installation of a (very high quality) pump on the cold water-side of the water heater, and a small bypass manifold at the second-floor’s most-distant sink. Now—we have hot water within seconds, and we have stopped wasting water waiting for the showers and sinks to get to temperature. Thanks (Again) Thompson! I’ll be asking for Vincent by name…he takes great pride in his workmanship, and it shows.

They try to scare you into buying services from them and then they charge a higher price than the competition. Three months after installing a brand new furnace it stopped working and I had to have them back out to fix it. They required me to sign a contract to keep the warranty valid and they require monthly preventive maintenance for $20 each time, totalling $240 a year. They also installed a new sewer line and they left a big hill of dirt in my lawn which they said they'd take care of and they did nothing with it. So, I had to hire another company to come out and haul the dirt away and reseed my lawn from the mess Thompson's made. Also, I had a different company clean my air ducts and a month or two later Thompson's came out for the maintenance and told me I needed my air ducts cleaned for over $600 - and I had just had them cleaned!
Description of Work: They installed a furnace for me and they installed a new sewer line.

Thompson Heating and A/C has always been my go to company. I recently had them come out to my home for my annual furnace inspection and I am glad I did. During the inspection they found a crack in the firewall of my furnace. I don't know if you are aware of the danger of this on a gas furnace. The previously owner of my 1954 ranch decided to take the cheap way out and put in an inferior furnace. Once the tech. performed his inspection, he contacted a Senior Tech. to review his findings. Keith and Ken confirmed the situation and sat down and explained in detail what the problem was and how to solve it. It came down to, I had to replace my furnace. We discussed the price and all options for payment. The next day my new furnace and air conditioner was installed, I opted to have both since they were already doing one and got a better price for replacing both instead of one at a time. I am very please with the professionalism and quality of work by all Thompson employees. They have never let me down. If I had an applause box, they would certainly receive a standing ovation for their quality of work and their employees knowledge and skill during their job performance.
