Help Plumbing Heating Cooling and Electric

Kenny arrived promptly and was informative and friendly. He ran into a few complications that changed the scope of what needed done and he was very forthcoming and helpful. Work took longer to complete due to the complications but Kenny was very devoted and truly cared to get things done for us. He stayed extremely late to amke sure he finished and it is truly appreciated as it is the only bathroom in our house. I feel Kenny went above and beyond what we would expect and now everything runs and drains as it should! I am very impressed and will certialy be calling Thompson back for any future plumbing as well as heating, cooling, electric work in the future.

I talked directly to one of the guys in the field that gave me the estimate, so I got a really good price. I know if people call and they send out a salesman, the price usually doubles. It was fairly priced for me. He looked like a used car salesman; he brought out a book and held it to his chest. He said that he can do it for this, and I said no. So we went back and forth for an half an hour till we settled on a price. But I don’t think the old people in my community would do that. They just have a dollar amount and say yes or no. The whole lock, stock and barrel of taking my stuff away and cleaning up the furnace room and putting the whole thing in; they did it in a day. They started at 8 AM and they were finished at 8 PM. It was wonderful. They were so clean, professional and nice. The price varies so much. I just happen to know a lot about heating and air conditioning. I would use them again in the future if I could get a fair price. For the plumbing job, it was $450 to replace a $2 valve. So I refused and I just called the management and said that I can't understand the price. They took $200 off because I refused to pay $450, and that still was too much. For plumbing and all the other stuff, if I deal with the company directly, it's terrible.

During their inspection of our furnace they said they found a crack in our heat exchanger. After three or four second opinions (one of which was through our home warranty company) it was determined there was nothing wrong with our heat exchanger beyond the normal wear and tear and we didn't need to spend the $6,000 Thompson recommended to replace the furnace. As a matter of fact, the technician that performed the original inspection said the unit was too big for our house. The supervisor that came out to confirm the technician did indeed find a crack in the heat exchanger said the unit was too small for our house! The technician and the supervisor couldn't even get their stories straight! We've since discontinued all association with Thompson as we feel their business practices are shady and unethical.

This a rental unit, so I couldn't be present during the time the worked was performed. I talked to the technician several times over the phone to go through the different fixes and he seemed very professional and knowledgeable... He performed an inspection of different areas and proposed different fixes that were necessary and changes in some of the materials ( type of faucet , etc).. the whole cost seemed to be too expensive..

I have two furnaces and they found same problem with both the furnaces. One of the furnaces was just a couple of years old. They made me sign a yearly program and I would be on top of the list if anything went wrong, and it costs me a lot of money and after a year I got rid of them. The guy was very friendly and seemed to do a good job but for the parts that they replaced they wanted so much money and they easily talked me into signing up for a year because then I will get a big discount for the work they do. I consulted other heating man and asked how much it would cost and they said it was $20 plus but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as expensive as what I ended up paying. I don’t consider it professional to make someone to sign a contract.

The best thing that I like about the company is the hours of availability. Their office is open until I believe 8 p.m. in the evening and it makes it easy if we have a need. We feel comfortable to be able to call them and know that we can get a response usually within the hour.

The service person was very nice, worked well, and respected my property. He mentioned that i may have had a leak in my air conditioner. Since it was still under warranty, I had a warranty authorized service person look at it and he said he couldn't find anything. I am not sure who to believe. Also, the company is a little agressive in calling to schedule yearly matinence stuff.

They have been my go to people over the years because they have always done a great job for me. Every experience of mine with them has been a good one. All different fields of theirs wok which is a nice thing as opposed to being good in one thing and not the other. Their timeliness was exceptional since I called them on a December night at 8 o’clock and the next morning they were at my place by 8 o’clock and within twenty four hours I had a new furnace which was pretty amazing. They sat down with me and explained my options and even told me if I got a particular thing then I would get a rebate from the government. They had all this information available with them to help me make a choice which is good from a home owner’s point of view. They do a lot of different stuff and they do it all very well. Their phone people are very good and when I call them they set up things for me. Someone will then call me back to inform me that things have been set up and when the driver is on his way and how long he would take before he is there. The organization of it is very professional and they do not keep me waiting wondering if I would have to be sitting around the whole day. From this perspective they are very good and they are also very clean. For example when they put my furnace in the basement, it was cleaner when they left as they vacuumed and broom swept the whole area that they were working in. It was an extremely positive experience.

Technician arrived on time and installed the very nice Pfister faucet that I had purchased. I questioned the parts that were left over after the installation and was told we didn't need them and he took them with him. After two more service calls and two more technicians, it was determined that the faucet was installed incorrectly and since the piece they needed was missing, they ended up installing one of 'their' no-name faucets. All was well until the sprayer handle started leaking. Since I had been told their faucet carried a lifetime warranty I called them back for service. The sprayer handle screws right off just like a light bulb and could easily be changed by anyone. They refused to let me come pick up the part and insisted I schedule a service call which would cost an additional $69 for them to come out and diagnose the problem. Ridiculous! Since this is a no-name faucet I cannot even find replacement parts anywhere else. Very frustrated!!!

They are a great company! They are more reasonable than other people. I have had them in emergency situations where we didn’t have heat and they immediately came out.

Overall it went well except for price.

They came in and did a great job. The serviceman was very professional and had great communication. He showed me what he was going to do and then did it. I recommend them to others.

Thompson was articulate and detailed the quality of the work and the employees are very nice and professional. They do try to disguise some of the hard sell as "we care and this is good service" in reality they just want to sell a little more.

They are a little on the high side with price but they are good.

The short of it: when you buy from Thompson (a professional company who can tackle anything), know these two things: 1. how much work will be performed for the price you pay? - get this information over the phone when you schedule your appointment 2. you WILL be up-sold on additional services or products. - they will find something to sell you. there's nothing wrong with this, they do it at McDonald's a million times a day. "would you like fries with that?" if it's not an emergency, get a second opinion. The long of it: I got the $97 special which is for 2 passes with an auger. Many small issues like mine can be handled with 2 passes. Larger issues will require 4-5 passes which will cost around $300-350. Also, get ready for the up-sell. I'm in sales at my company and I know how to identify an up-sell. They will find something to sell to you. Why wouldn't they? They're doing a 2-hour service call for $97. They can't stay in business doing only those. Also, look at the amount of marketing around town. Who do you think pays for that? They will say "no pressure" but they will still pressure you. It's a sales tactic, never forget that. There's nothing wrong with it and you can't blame them, but if you're unsuspecting and uneducated, you can end up paying for something you don't need. They tried to sell me a sewer drain liner for almost $20k. Not to mention a 5-year, same as cash payment plan. They will stand by this as your only option and scare you into thinking you need it. SALES. Bottom line: These guys know what they're doing and they can fix any of your problem areas. They are pricey, but if you take care of yourself and your best interests, you'll be fine.

The plumber was professional and seemed very qualified, no problems there. He came out and verified we needed a new unit. Also discussed a few other ideas, he was honest and very helpful. The problem was the pricing. They quoted me $2800 for a 50 gal water heater, more than 2x the 3 other companies I called. I had a Rheem WH installed for $1100 by another company. Perhaps it isn't an apples to apples comparison, but 2x is a little extreme. The unit replaced lasted 8+ years, the Thompson model would have to last for about 20 to even out. In addition they were the only plumbers that refused to give me a quote over the phone though I stated exactly what I needed. I had to pay $50 for the guy to come out and then use a laminated price list for a quote. Why couldn't your call center do the same? Had I gotten a quote over the phone I could have saved the guy a trip on a Friday evening.

The plumber was very friendly and knowledgeable. I was very pleased with their services.

the work was done correctly but their prices are high. they ambushed me into joining their club by offering a much lower price for the repair if you join the club.

I called Thompson to come out and do our annual maintenance check of our furnace as part of the service plan. The technician in the course of the check said that he had found that the heat exchanger was cracked and was going to red flag the furnace as it was unsafe to operate. He advised replacing the furnace. I questioned whether the heat exchanger was cracked and asked for a second opinion. A supervisor came out several days later and after a few minutes confirmed the techician's finding. I had two other companies look at the furnace and they found no crack in the heat exchanger plus the heat exchanger was still under warranty which Thompson never bothered to tell me about. They did not do a radon or carbon monoxide test before red flagging the furnace. Since then the furnace has operated fine. I have cancelled my contract with Thompson. I do not advise anyone to have any dealings with this company.

The service was excellent. They were very professional.

Thompson's personnel were very professional and forthright. They detailed our options and the respective costs, made sound recommendations and answered all questions thoroughly. The jobs were completed within the promised time, and the quality of their work was excellent. There were no defects and there have been no problems with the furnace or the air conditioner since installation.

Again, Thompson is fine but in future we will get more estimates.

Well here's where it went bad. The serviceman told me the water heater needed to be replaced. He might have been completely honest though I was a bit suspicious. In fairness, I had no idea if the water heater just needed a minor repair or it just needed the be completely replaced, but given that the heater was six years old, the fact that the most expensive thing that could've happened is what they're telling me what happened, that raised an eyebrow. So the serviceman told me how much it would cost, and gave an estimate of about $2600. On top of that he told me he could give me a discount if I became a member of a club with their service that cost about $20 a month. That further rubbed me the wrong way. I mean hey, how often does someone need a plumber? Once in years...so to pay $20 a month to me seemed odd. So I asked him how much are they charging for just the water heater itself and he told me $1700. I was frantic to get hot water so I told him okay, and he left the house to get things in order. In the meantime I did an Internet search to see how much these things cost. The highest end water heaters (50 gallon, gas powered), were on the order of $600-800 depending on the maker, so to be told that they're charging on the order of 200%, wow now I was just thinking the deal is broken. He told me it would be about four hours of work, so in effect I'm being charged > $200 an hour for service? Listen, no offense, but my medical doctor makes about $200 an hour and went through a decade of training , so for this guy to charge me more than her? Hey, I got nothing against anyone in any profession, but I'm just throwing this in as a reference in what I'd think would be a fair price. Then, I called two other plumbing services offered by chain hardware stores that I will not name only because to do so could be considered advertising. I told them if I needed my 50 gallon gas powered water heater replaced, how much would it be for them to bring it in, install it, then take the old one out, and both these places were quoting me about $1700. In short, I felt like I was being ripped about $1000, so I told the guy to cancel the deal. I tipped him because I gave him at least that benefit of the doubt, maybe he's just following corporate order. He did tell me I didn't have to tip him, but I insisted given that he showed up to my home on a holiday, and did spend about 15 minutes checking out my water heater. Now in fairness, maybe this serviceman was not indicative of the quality of the work from Thompson, but this was my experience. Update 1/5/2013: I had another serviceman from another business (I will not name the business because then it might be seen as advertising) offer to do the same exact job for $1400, when they told me the price of a new water heater, it was on par with what you'd expect the price to be online, and he explained how the entire thing worked and he would be making about $50 an hour for his time and labor, making me very confident that I was right not to go with the serviceman from Thompson. I had that guy do the installation, though I decided to go with a tankless water heater so it was more expensive but justifiably so because tankless heaters are more money. All-in-all, I went through three different services other than Thompson, and all of them were quoting me prices way cheaper, and offering a water heater for the price you'd expect to pay if you bought it directly from the store. I recommend if any of you use Thompson or any other plumber, and they tell you they need to get new parts, ask them how much they are charging and tell them you're going to look into how much this thing costs from other places including the Internet and don't expect to pay a serviceman on the order of $200/hr. As I said, several medical doctors don't make this much.

The representative from Thompson's was very knowledgable and courteous as he went through the process of replacing our HVAC system step by step. He covered every base and answered every question before we even thought of them to ask. He explained things so that we understand and did not talk down to us at all. He was very helpful with the financing, helping us find the best way to handle the big cost of a new HVAC unit. From the moment he came to our home to go over everything until the servicemen left our home (nice and warm from a new, working unit) was less than 28 hours. Very fast turn around and very flexible scheduling. The servicemen who actually installed the new unit were polite, clean, friendly, and left everything in better condition than when they left it. There was very minimal disruption to our household as they took out the old and replaced with the new. Thank you!!
