Came to fix an outlet they installed, found out wiring was a fire hazard. Charged me $476 and would not give me any price break.
Description of Work: Called them to fix an outlet box in my garage that they installed several years ago.I was told there was a fire hazard the way the wiring was done. I asked for a reduction in pricing because it should have been done the correct way at the installation. They refused. I have been a long time customer but I will not use again. The tech who came was great, I wish he worked for another company

Did not go well. Asked Cooper electric to review home inspectors report to provide estimate to repair home for Aluminum wiring. Charged us to do the estimate and spent several hours in the home. Have yet to ever receive estimate to do the work. Called again asking for the estimate, and was told they would have to talk to the person that spent several hours in the house to put the estimated cost together. Never heard back, never received an estimate. Ended up locating another contractor that walked the home and provided estimate at no cost. I hired the other contractor who did a great job!

I contacted Cooper Electric at the beginning of the month for a quote. The technician came out and assessed my situation. The technician was professional and seemed genuinely interested in collecting all the information he would require to make an accurate quote. He collected my e-mail address and phone number and said he would e-mail me with the quote. I waited a week before contacting them to see the status of my quote. I thought that perhaps my e-mail hadn't been written down correctly or that the message was in spam. I was told I would get a call back. I waited another week with no call back and so I called again. I was told the owner was working on the quote and they would call me back. It has now been almost four weeks since the technician visited and I still have received no quote or any contact from Cooper Electric.

Dave came around 8:30 A.M. on January 20, 2015 with his apprentice. Dave instructed his apprentice on exactly what needed to be done and provided him with some useful tips. They then proceeded to install the three-way switches in both the kitchen and laundry room. In about two hours both sets of switches were installed. They discovered though that the stock person did not provide them with the decora switches and they had to use standard design switches. The decora switches were brought out about 3 days later to replace the standard switches at no extra charge. While the apprentice installed the garage lights, Dave carefully located and drilled holes for the under cabinet lighting and fished the walls for the wiring to provide a finished look. The apprentice finished the garage lighting in an hour and then continued on to work on the kitchen and foyer lights. All work was finished at 4 P.M. and the areas were cleaned up.

The electrician arrived at 9 A.M. and I showed him what needed to be done. He adjusted the chain pull on the overhead fan and made it easier to use. He then installed the two outside flood lights that I provided and caulked the top to prevent any water from getting in behind the fixtures. I told the electrician that I was experiencing an "electrical smell" (somewhat like something overheating) coming from my utility room. The electrician turned off the electric to the heat pump and checked the connection box. He found that the plastic connector was loose. He added an extension box to the existing box and twisted the wires together and used a new wire nut to correct the issue. By 10:30 the job was done and the work areas were cleaned up. I have not had any more trouble with the heat pump area, the ceiling fan works fine and the lights look great.

We are so grateful that we received several recommendations to work with Cooper Electric for our electric issues in our new home. Simply put, the team from Cooper Electric was incredibly thorough, responsive, and professional throughout the entire project. I will only work with Cooper Electric for electric issues as long as I live in Cincinnati. Richard and Will were assigned to our project, and worked on our home for 5 days from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (or later). They were always on time, respectful of our space, and went above any beyond to answer questions and provide updates on the daily progress. They also made great recommendations for other updates around the house, not part of the specific project, but worthy of consideration for future updates. Don't be deterred by the cost for this project, as it was a huge job. I believe the hourly rate is about $90.
Description of Work: Cooper Electric completed the Amp Copalum System on every Junction containing aluminum in our new house. In short, we purchased our first home, and the entire home had to be upgraded since it was aluminum wiring that was against code.

Half the house electricity was out. Checking breaker switches was not working. Called Cooper, after researching on Angies List and saw their high ratings. They responded immediately and identified that half of the twin inputs from the street had gone bad. He did a temporary switchover to keep us going until the replacement breaker could be retrieved the next day. That day, he cut out a larger piece of the drywall so the new one would fit, and replaced it. A job well done, by a true professional with a good sense of humor who was engaging, entertaining, and got the job done in good time. Cooper will be my electric company from this day forward.

The quote Included new stack, panel and all new breakers. I ended up going with a smaller private contractor for a little more than half that price. He dismantled the wiring and then I informed him that I have aluminum wiring and they didn't have the tools to complete the work at this time. I had purchased the light and he attempted a temporary fix and I didn't want a temporary fix. I feel like they should have asked me about what type of wiring I have before I made the appointment and said it was my fault for not telling them this before they came out to do the work. I also feel they should have asked me before trying to make a temporary fix as well. After this, I won't be using Cooper Electric again. The service provider overheard a phone conversation I was having about this issue and while in his van writing the paperwork decided not to charge me.

Based on Angie?s List reviews, I assumed Cooper Electric would be pricey but efficient. Turns out, they were just the former. I explained that the exhaust fan in the upstairs bathroom was not working; the motor would hum, but did not work. I was warned that the cost to send someone would be $60 for the service call and $45 a half hour thereafter. Pricey, but the ratings on Angie?s List seemed to indicate Cooper Electric was worth the cost. The electrician came and was personable enough. He could not fix the fan and said when he returned I would be charged another $60 service call, the cost of the fan, and $45 a half hour. That seemed extravagant, and I spoke with his supervisor, who admitted Cooper Electric had been unclear that there might be a need for a return visit and therefore another service charge. In view of the lack of clarity, he said he would waive the $60 when the electrician returned with a new fan. He had the electrician take pictures of the old fan in the ceiling to size the new fan. The electrician dutifully took pictures and wrote down on my expensive receipt ($104 - $10 for Angie?s List membership), for which I received no service, that there would be no $60 service charge when he returned. That was the week of Thanksgiving. I haven?t heard a peep from Cooper Electric since. They took my money for that visit, did absolutely nothing, and did not bother following through on their word to return without charging a service charge to fix my exhaust fan. I called Arc Electric Friday, Dec. 19th; the electrician made two trips on Dec. 23rd, replaced the old fan and installed another, all for a total cost of $215. I only wish I hadn?t wasted so much money on Cooper Electric in the first place. Never again, and if folks at Cooper Electric had any decency, they would return the $94 they took from me without following up and actually solving the problem.

I've used this company several times in the past and have recommended them to my neighbors. I think their pricing is a little high, but they're well established and reliable. Generally, 2 workers show up--an electrician and a helper, but today the electrician was by himself and I knew this might be a problem because he needed to run electric from the attic of my 2-story home to the basement. I told him that I had recently added about 14 inches of blown-in cellulose in my attic and asked if he could he push back any insulation that he disturbed and he assured me he would. After trying unsuccessfully for over an hour to run the cable, he wound up abandoning that idea and went through my garage, which actually worked out fine. After he left, while my wife ran the vacuum on the stairs and picking up loose insulation and debris, I decided to check the attic to make sure all the insulation was OK. Unfortunately, he left a mess in my attic---pushing aside and pushing down a trail of insulation deep into the attic. It also looks as though he cleared insulation away from a pipe and didn't replace it. I have no way of getting up there on my own to fix it and I'll probably have to call the insulation contractor back to see if they can do something about it. Finally, I had to clean up a good-sized oil leak from his truck that was on my concrete driveway. All in all, I was disappointed in the way things turned out and I'll probably try another company next time.

This is for information only. No service was provided. Called and spoke to a nice gentleman. I explained in detail what I wanted them to do. As I am price checking, all of the other calls I made about this small job had told me this would be a simple fix.(less than an hour). The gentleman I spoke to told me he did not know how long it would take and would not give me a free estimate or even offer to come out and give a free estimate. He did tell me the trip charge and they charged on the half hour. I told him that on Angie's List his ad said free estimates. Then he started going in to examples of how my job did not apply to the free estimate. I found this to be a very strange reply. I asked him how long had they been in business? He said 70 years. I thanked him and got off the phone. You would think that after 70 years he could have given me an estimate on it. Or at lest given me a ball park estimate. STRANGE. So, they say free estimate, but will not give it on what I've been told was a simple job. I did not want to rate this, but it gave me no choice. So, I had to give them a D. Because they did not give me an estimate as they said they would here on Angie's List. BUYER USE CAUTION

There is a difference between DIAGNOSTIC WORK, and ADDED WIRING. Diagnostic work, is charged on a half hour basis. Added wiring is quoted work done with "free estimates". Diagnostic work, because the problem needs to be found, and then fixed, does not always have an exact time frame.... We can give you an idea of how long we think it might take, and from that possibly give a ballpark based on hours it could take to do the diagnostic work. However, there are 2 drastically different things.... If something is not working, the problem needs to be diagnosed, found, and then fixed, that is diagnostic work and charged on time and material basis... If you want to add a circuit, for say outside receptacles, that is an estimated scope of work, and would fall under the "free estimate"... Thanks, Gil Hyland 513-271-5000

I initially told the company I wanted to have two fans installed, the one that was being taken down taken to a new room. I actually changed my mind and only had one installed. They sent two workers, since they had a gap in their schedule. It turned out the one worker was an apprentice. I was not told I was going to have to pay for two workers. Since the apprentice did all the work, and the supervisor, literally just supervised and tried to sell me more work, I was billed $450 for one fan. I thought this pricing was crazy! I was never given an estimate for the work, which I should have asked for (in the past they offered this). Had I known I was going to be billed for two workers, I would have asked for a different arrangement. I thought it was crazy to pay $80/hr for someone to stand around. I will not be using them again.

Cooper Electric credited time back to the customer. And the invoice is a lot lower than price she states in the comments. Our electricians were there to install 2 fans........ Hot muggy days are not days to be in attics ALL day for 1 person......... We quoted rates and she signed off on them... We had 2 people to install 2 fans, and the second person was charged out at a HELPER rate...... The first fan had to have a new fan brace box installed and we had to cut lath and plaster ceiling, since it was an old home. It required 2 people so as not to damage her ceiling.... We even credited back money to her on the invoice dated 5/21/14.... Job completed 5/16/14... It is June 5th 2014, and we have still has not been paid.... THE FAN works though, and we hope she is enjoying the cooling comfort of a fan she had installed. We stand behind our work, and we are sorry she doesn't think we deserve to get paid anything. We tried to compromise with crediting back money, and still no comment other than an Angie's List post. I also tried to call the homeowner to apologize over the phone.... Thanks, Gil Hyland 513-271-5000.

Absolutely terrible customer services skills. The first day available was a week from today to fix the dryer - that's fine. But I can't wait a week to fix that issue since there is laundry to be done. The estimate for the replacement of two breaker boxes could wait till next Thursday. When I told the gentleman that I was happy to have them come give an estimate for the breaker boxes he told me they would not be interested in doing that if they weren't going to fix my dryer issue at the same time despite me needing it fixed before next Thursday. When I asked him specifically they would not be interested in giving a bid for the breaker boxes he said very emphatically NO. Sounds a bit shady when someone doesn't want their estimate compared to other electrical bids unless there is sometime to hide like overcharging people. Move on to another company willing to stand up to their competition....

Fixing a known electrical issue, is DIAGNOSTIC work. Electricians charge rates to get paid to fix things for diagnostic work, such as fixing your dryer.... We clearly established, that we were not available until the next Thursday to complete diagnostic work. Then you change your tune that you want a FREE estimate for 2 breaker boxes. So then you are telling us that you NOW want a FREE estimate for a panel change or other alteration, when you already have a known electrical problem... It sends a red flag to us, that you just want free advice. We are willing to do give free advice over-the-phone, all the time. We are just not able to ignore the fact that you have a KNOWN electrical issue. We will never knowingly violate the national electrical code, and it goes against our company policy to fix anything else in the house, knowing you have a problem with your dryer circuit, and not fixing that issue is a fire hazard. Just a situation we avoided, because you did not want it fixed. Thanks, Gil Hyland. 513-271-5000
