Bob was easy to get ahold of by telephone. He called back and we set up an appointment to look at the necessary work. Bob was very helpful with suggestions on how the work should be correctly done and why certain procedures would help with the longevity of the repairs, (new masonery caps on chimneys, pointing repairs). The work went quickly and thourghly. Bob,s work was excellent and I would highly reccomend him.

The chimney was repaired and cap installed. Contractor brought other problems with the chimney to my attention and repaired them as well. Also cleaned and repaired the front stair brickwork to near new condition! Work was done professionally, quickly and at a reasonable price. BOB WAS VERY FRIEENDLY AND EASY TO WORK WITH, and when he saw something that needed attention fixed the problem without charging extra. VERY NEAT AND PROFESSIONAL WORK - no residue from work performed was left for me to clean up. I didn't even hear a bad word from him or his workers. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

When I found Thompsons masonry on Angies list and read his reviews, I knew he was the guy for our job. He had/has great reviews and we were excited to start working with him. I really wished things would have gone differently, but that isn't the case. There are several reasons why Thompsons masonry deserves the "F" grades, I will do my best to list them all: 1. We first contacted Bob the first week of May. It took him over a week just to return our call. I was willing to let that go, based on his reviews I felt like his work would more than make up for it. Every other phone call after, AT LEAST one week to return a call, if he even returned it! 2. Bob finally called back and said he would come out Friday, May 10th to do an estimate. My husband had a planned working day at home, and said he would be available. Bob never showed up or called to say he wasn't coming. THEN, on Saturday he calls my husband and says " I'm in the driveway." Thankfully we were home, but what if we weren't? You can't call ahead of time and give us a heads up? Very poor planning on his part. 3. Bob looked at our steps and brickwork and was very confident in being able to make it look "brand new." I got really excited listening to him talk about what he could do. Based on how he talked to us, he sounded creative, knowledgable, smart and professional. He at no point, felt like the job would be too much, too difficult etc. He took photos, measurements, and a brick count. 4. Bob gives us a proposal of $2400 to fix the steps. We were more then happy with that price and were again, very excited to work with him. We called him (of course he doesn't answer), leave him a message that we are interested and accept his offer. He calls us back two weeks later (again willing to let that slide based on his reputation) and says he can do the job the week of June 10th. 5. Well, week of June 10th comes and goes. Bob doesn't show up for the job. Doesn't return our phone call...Nothing. There was some rain that week, so we thought it could have been that factor for him not showing. But I think that at least warrants a phone call?? 6. Bob calls us on Monday, June 17th. Says he can do the job on Thursday and Friday of that week. Again, very excited to work with him despite the experience thus far. He shows up Thursday, June 20th while my husband is still home. He is looking at the work and says, it will cost more then 2400, more like 2800-3200. My husband was perplexed as he had taken photos and seemed so confident prior in being able to work on it at the previous price. My husband agreed to the price, reiterated that we just wanted it to look nice and whatever the cost we would take care of it. 7. So my husband gets home on Thursday, anticipating to see progress. Well folks...no progress was made. In fact, nothing was done at all. A note was let on the door that says, and I quote " Not interested in this job! "sorry" Too many variables. Might land into much more work here." Don't you think that warrants at least a phone call? I mean, at least tell us what these variables are so we know going forward?? 8. I can't begin to express the disappointment from this. Seemed like Thompsons Masonry had it going on. But on every level, they really messed up. I have a feeling there was a bigger, better job out there for them and they just felt like they didn't want to waste their time doing ours. But in doing so, they wasted our time for over a month. If you have plenty of time to spare and don't care for professionalism, accuracy and punctuality give them a call. Worse experience we have EVER had in terms of home repairs. Also -- I have photos of his original propossal and the nice little note he left. If there was a place for me to post those here I would.
Description of Work: Thompsons masonary was supposed to repair stairs and stair walls. There are bricks that crumbling, and they were going to replace those to match the existing veneer of the house.

Bob was very friendly, efficient, and the quality of the work was outstanding. He was very open to completing small additional items while on the job site. He even cleaned out build-up in our french drain; it appeared that prior contractors had just rinsed debris, etc. into the drain without ensuring that the waste elements had cleared. I am planning the addition of a hardscape patio and hope to be working with Bob on that project as well. I have tried numerous masonry contractors in the 23 years I've owned my home and Bob is the best, by far.

I contacted about a half dozen companies (all A) who do this type of work. There was a 6000.00 dollar spread which really amazed me. After listening to all of them and reading what they said needed to be done and how each one would proceed, I decided to go with Bob. From start to finish, the work was done efficiently and effectively. I watched them work and I was impressed by their energy and as my husband used to say..they work smart. Time is not wasted and the clean up of all the little chips of paint that were all over the yard after water blasting was excellent. Bob even filled the gaps between the the front steps. Because I have a landmark house, the city is fairly strict with what I can and cannot do which is a shame because Bob is also quite artistic. He showed me pictures of his work and I wish I could take advantage of his talents. A great job at a great price from a great company.

Bob came out a couple times to talk over the condition of our chimneys and the recommended work. We liked his approach and price. He gave us a range of when work could begin, and was able to stick to that. He came on each day when the weather was workable; there were two workers on the job at all times and they worked quite efficiently. Bob also offered to do a couple extra things at the job site for no extra cost (some cosmetic work on two of our steps) and followed through on these. We were very happy with the work.
Description of Work: Thompson Masonry tore down and rebuilt the top two-thirds of our main chimney, removed paint from bottom third of this chimney and from another on our home, and did repair work on both chimneys as well. The repair included tuck-pointing, caulking around chimney flashing and sealing around the cap.

Our overall experience was very positive. Key points from our persective are as follows: Bob and his crew were pleasant, courteous and always respectful to our input. He provided helpful tips on keeping our stairs in top condition. The work was completed in a timely manner (even in the wake of hurricane Sandy and all the rain). They did a great job of cleaning up after all work was completed. In addition to how the work was completed, the work itself is wonderful. All work looks fantastic and I am confident that we will get a lifetime of usage out of it. We would recommend Thompsons Masonry without reservation.
Description of Work: The scope of work is as follows: 1. Tear down and rebuild a set of brick stairs and retaining walls. This included the complete removal of all brick, taking the wing walls down to below grade and pouring new footers to support the walls. Due to the unique nature of the 1926 brick, all brick was cleaned and reused. This was not part of the original scope of work but Bob decided that it was the right approach to keep with the character of the adjoining structure of our home. (The wing walls surrounding the stairs have the same brick pattern and flow from the main home structure.) This approach resulted in quite a bit of addtional labor in the demolishing of the walls and cleaning of the brick. There were no additional charges incurred by us for this approach. 2. Tear down and rebuild an additional set of brick stairs. This included the removal of all brick treads and risers. The same approach was taken to reuse the existing brick. Additional tuck pointing was completed as needed on the wing walls using color matched mortar. 3. Above and beyond (and at no additional cost to us), Bob completed various tuck pointing on a third set of stairs and on several other areas of the home as needed. He also cleaned and power washed our sidewalk and the caps on the wing walls of 2 other sets of stairs.
Excellent from quote to the finished work. Very responsive.
Description of Work: Mr. Thompson was excellent to work with. Very responsive, creative with ideas, and excellent work. He takes pride in his work and it shows. He repaired some bricks that were spalling and tuck point on the entire chimney. He also smoothed and repaired some cracks int eh concrete front porch.

Our chimney, above the roof line was crumbling. One brick had even fallen onto the roof. Needles to say, it needed rebuilt. I found Thompson's Masonry thru Angies List. We contacted them and within a a few days, they were here to give an estimate and start date. Thompson's Masonry did excellent work. He arrived on the date promised and completed the work the same day. We have a brand new chimney. It looks great!! They even did some other masonry work that we didn't even request at no extra charge. This is a professional company and we would recommend them anytime. We may even have some more projects for them to accomplish next year.
Description of Work: First, let me apologize for not writing this review sooner. They disassemble our chimney down to the roof line and rebuilt it. Also, sealed around the chimney where it meets the roof. They cut out a bad section of vent pipe that was perforated with holes. Also, put a very nice dimension to the top of the chimney instead of just a straight chimney. All brand new brick and they hauled away all debris.

The work began as scheduled and was completed in about 10 days. The finished product met all of our expectations and was done very professionally. Over the last couple of years we had observed some movement of the new porch in one corner for some unknown reason and contacted the owner, Bob Thompson, in October 2010. Bob came out to look at the situation and spent a full day of his time digging down on the corner that had settled and made repairs. Doing this 7 years after completing the original project was excellent customer service that was greatly appreciated. Contracting for any project around the home involves a certain amount of risk but having a contractor that stood behind their workmanship years later is in my opinion very commendable.
Description of Work: The work involved tearing out our existing front porch (approx. 6' x 24"), hand digging for a new foundation, installing the foundation, and finishing using bricks and concrete.

overall, went very well. very conscientious. mr. thompson found defects that other contractors (also highly rated on angie's list) did not seem to have noticed. because of the poor condition of the porch foundation, he had to do more work than anticipated. the only drawback was that he was so backed up with other work that we had to wait a few months.

I needed to have some tuck pointing done before the snow season started and I was unable to contact another contractor name I was given. I was getting desperate and decided to called four contractors on Angie's list. Two of the mason I contacted I left my number with on their answering machine with to call me back ............ they never did called me back. The other two mason I contacted I spoke to via the cell phone both of which agreed to give me estimates. I live in Shaker and Rick happened to be doing a job in Shaker and agreed to stop by and give me an estimate in between another appointment. Rick stopped at my house at lunch time and informed his afternoon appointment canceled on him. I told him what I wanted done. He told me what he would and what materials he would use so that when the job was done it was done right and it would last. He also told me he would matched the buff mortar for the tuck pointing for my sandstone. During the time I talked to Rick I found out he had just completed doing work on a house on a very good friend of mine. I called my friend and he informed me that Rick did a great job for him. Rick gave me a very reasonable estimate for the work that I needed to be done and I agreed to have him do the work on the spot. I contacted the other mason via his cell phone and left him a message that there was no need to stop and give me an estimate since I was having Rick do my work. I also needed some more tuck pointing to be done on my main Chimney. Rick again explained to me what need to be done in order to correct the problem on my Chimney that was causing the existing problem. He gave me an estimate to do the work in the spring since this jog will require him to set up some scaffolding to complete the work. Since the time that I used Rick I talked to another of my good friends and found out he had also had used Rick do several different jobs for him as well and spoke highly of Rick's work. I will be calling Rick in the spring to do the needed tuck pointing on my main Chimney. I highly recommend Rick.
Description of Work: Rick and his assistant did tuck pointing on a chimney flew (this is a two family house) and tuck pointing on sandstone bay window. Rick also touch up a nick on my sandstone step and knocked out some excessive cement on my driveway allowing me to reset a railroad tie. The work was professionally done and when it was completed the work area was cleaned up.

Used him 3 to 4 times. Residential and commercial. Work quality better than A+ AS WELL AS PRICE. I don't even comparison shop him anymore
Description of Work: First time, replaced two chimneys completely, did some brick work and his quote was more than 50% lower than my other quotes. He showed up before he told me and stayed until completed. His price was as he quoted-actually replaced a additional chimney flue pipe, did not charge labor, only the cost of the pipe. Other jobs, included repairing steps and a brick dividing wall at a commercial prpoerty. =

It went GREAT! Bob called me right back and stopped by that day to look at the job and left a quote. I called him a few days later and he came out that following Saturday. He was running a few minutes behind and called to let me know. He was there from 9:30 until about 3 and took care of some other little jobs around the outside of our house b/c he had extra materials. He didn't charge us for any of the extra work, but we did give him some extra $$ for his time. He was professional, cleaned up nicely and we highly recommend him!

I called Mr. Thompson on Wed., he called me back Wed. evening, he came out Thurs. and gave me a quote, and he did the work (with a helper) on Friday. I called him mainly to do the work on the chimney, but one of the helpful Angie's reviews said to ask him to look around to see what else needed to be done which I did. He was thorough, explained the work in detail, and gave me a detailed free estimate. Total payment was due upon completion and my satisfaction of the work. He cleaned up and took all trash with him. I was completely satisified and would highly recommend his work.
Description of Work: Tuckpointed all mortar joints, replaced cracked brick, added new crown and caulked flashing on chimney. Tuckpointed house foundation where needed. Washed and tuckpointed front steps. Fixed one cracked downspout base. Sealed all of the above with an acrylic sealer. Removed cracked cement and installed expansion joints next to house and by garage.
