Bob Thompson promptly returned my call, and came the next day to provide an estimate, which he provided while he was at our home. Following our approval, he returned the next day to do the work. He hammered out all loose material as well as ground out loose mortar between the bricks/tiles. Bricks and mortar were used to fill in the holes in the old clay tiles that had spalled and were open into their centers. Bob then applied the new cement/acrylic coating. He also resecured some of the surface sandstone at the top of the window wells that had come loose. Clean-up was thorough and complete. Our interactions were professional yet comfortable - we asked many questions and received direct responses. Bob also shared with us his interest in artisanal masonry work - fascinating to learn about.
Description of Work: Fixed several window wells that needed masonry repair, some of which was substantial. Used a white acrylic to both color and bond to the existing clay tile/mortar, eliminating need for painting.

Came out quickly for an estimate, did the job the same day, used extra mortar to tuckpoint steps for no additional cost. I was unable to be present so had to rely on his professionalism. I am rarely satisfied, but Mr. Thompson exceeded my expectations in all facets of this job. I would highly recommend him.

He was great, he looked at the job late last year but the weather turned cold before the work could be performed. As the weather warmed up in the last couple of weeks I called him out to do the job and he was right on time Monday morning as he said he would. He did a great job and went above and beyond fixing a few other items for no extra charge.

The work was done in July 2013, but I just accidentally came across his invoice and decided to write a review because I remember how impressed I was with his work and the whole experience. First, he gave me a reasonable quote. He showed up exactly on time with his helper. They got right to work and worked without interruptions until everything was completed a few our later. The work was done efficiently, professionally and to a high quality standard. They cleaned after themselves. They even did some work on my second chimney and then caulked and sealed front steps for no extra charge. I remember thinking I wish every contractor experience was like this.

This guy was AWESOME. He is a go getting, stand up guy. I have been looking for a great mason for the past 6 months. I've had a ton of quotes to get tuck pointing done on two chimneys on my house. I bought the house in August and had been looking for forever for someone to do this work. The quotes ranged from $700 to $4500. I even thought I found a guy but he ended up messing a ton of things up instead of actually doing the work he said he was going to do. My chimney is built 15 feet off of my 3rd floor roof. It's pretty high up. There was a ton of cement falling out of the grooves and it was leaning significantly. There was cement all over my roof. I called Thompson Masonry, out of many others as well, and Bob got back to me immediately. The next day, Bob stopped out at my house first thing on a Saturday morning and walked through the entire process with me. He even educated me on what the previous guys were doing wrong with what they said they would do. The following business day, he came back out to my house with a written up quote for the work. It was the perfect price and he explained everything he would be doing and why he would do it that way. I called him immediately and scheduled the work. This was yesterday. TODAY he came out to my house first thing in the morning and worked on my house all day. At 6pm I got a call as I was leaving work that he was done! I left work and met him at my house where I paid him and that's it! The chimney looks amazing. I'm confident that Bob did the work right. I'm confident that he is a master at his work. He won't nickel and dime you, like the other 10 guys did that I received quotes from. I support this guy 3,000% and I hope that you ask him to come give you a quote. He is great.

It was awesome. Bob came out to the house today, thought the job was on the smaller side (which surprised me because the quotes we had from other contractors were definitely not not on the small side), and offered to complete the job today. He also helped us to identify the sources of some very stubborn leaks that we have been trying for years to fix (thousands of dollars later). His work looks fantastic (it's still drying since he just finished this afternoon). His price was also incredibly reasonable. We'd had a quote from S. Bradley roofing company on our other chimney for $5500!! And Bob fixed this chimney for $700. Wow!!! We really liked him and highly recommend him. Also a charming and friendly person.
Description of Work: Bob and his employee tuckpointed my brick chimney from 1932 up to my roofline. They also tuckpointed an area around the garage that had led to moisture intrusion in a window. They also tuckpointed a small area on my back deck.

Amazingly well! First, we had been looking unsuccessfully for someone to do the brick work for about 2 years. But each person we contacted either didn't show up or their price was not reasonable. He came out and gave us an estimate. He not only looked at what we knew needed to be fixed but also identified other areas like caulking at the bottom of window sills and some other brick areas needing attention. His price was reasonable and he could get it done before the upcoming cold weather would arrive. We agreed to have him do it because of the reviews on Angie's List. He came back and completed the work on the same day. He even fixed our yard lamp post which was leaning! He cleaned up and my wife was happy with the results (I was out of town). It was truly refreshing to have someone do exactly what they said they would do (plus a little extra!) for a reasonable price. If we ever have any masonry needs in the future we will definitely be contacting him.

Outstanding job and customer service. Mr. Thompson went above and beyond in rebuilding my crumbling and spalling brick chimney. He even repaired the poor workmanship of an incompetent contractor who worked on another chimney (see my 2011 review of another disastrous contractor), and Mr. Thompson did not charge anything extra. He is extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. Very careful and conscientious professional who tended to every detail, including clean-up and protection of property and landscaping. His work looks great. Couldn't be happier! Highly recommend and would definitely use again!

I had had two other estimates and both wanted to take down at least a third of the chimney and rebuild it. Bob said this was not necessary as the bricks were sound. This saved me a significant amount of money and time. Work was done in just one day. He had his own scaffolding. House is two story plus attic and the chimney is tall. He stuck with his estimate, takes great pride in his work. He is professional and friendly and explained what he would be doing.
Description of Work: He repaired a chimney, realigning and repairing the cap and tuck pointing the rest of it. He also did tuck pointing on two brick pillars and filled in mortar where needed around the house and front steps.

In my humble opinion, this review is worth reading... I bought my home in Aurora 2007 and my home inspector not only missed what apparently was very obvious damage to my chimney but expensive damage. To provide a little background, I live in a center chimney colonial which means I have one extremely large chimney (you could literally fit the car on top of it) with four fireplaces and one exhaust flue feeding into it. It's very large. The previous owner must have had some roofer slathering roofing tar on the top of the chimney that is wrong. It will trap moisture and ultimately deteriorate brick that means that eventually your chimney will have to be rebuilt. This was very serious, and I sued my home inspector (pay attention to this part) I won. The contracts you signed with those numbskulls mean very little and indemnify them even less. He said there was nothing wrong with the chimney it turned out there was a lot wrong with it. I called around many different Angie's list companies all of which gave me estimates between $4600 at the lowest, and one is high as $7500. Apparently, the entire crown had to be removed, and you cement to redo it. I even had a couple of these other contractors tell me that once they put the breakdown they could simply put that back on there, and it would be fine. Unbelievable. With insurance money to pay for the repairs, I wanted to get the work done before more rain came into my house. I went on Angie's list one more time and typed in "chimney repair" which had never occurred to me before. I was calling roofing companies who said that they do chimney repair. Bob Thomas picked up the call and immediately made an appointment to come by within a few days. He took photographs with his phone of the damage and told me that the water was leaking in from bad flashing (done by the roofers) and not the wet brick on the chimney. He said the chimney was in disrepair however was not about to fall over, and I could wait two years to repair it LOL. I had to question his business judgment by telling me this and his exact words were " I don't need to take advantage of people, I get a lot of referral business and I would sooner you call me when you need to work and spend my time doing something that is unnecessary." He also pointed out that my flue liners were flush with the top of the chimney that by today's standards is in proper. The flue liner should stick up approximately 8 inches or more so that would need to be done as well. I'm preparing myself for an outrageous estimate, here's an actual stonemason and although he is honest my suspicion was that not only was the aforementioned work necessary at some time but there would be additional work as well. When we were done chatting I said "well, it's a relief to know I don't have to do this right away but what you think it's going to cost." He says? I don't know? I mean it's hard to say? About $900! I had to choke back a laugh; he wrote up an estimate to which I immediately agreed and said why don't we just do this towards the end of the summer. This is where the story gets better... Not only was the chimney in disrepair but it was a lot more work than they anticipated. They had to set up scaffolding and with one excellent employee, they worked for two full days and scorching heat to tear off the top of the chimney, get custom fit flue liners, match the color of the mortar, and rebuild everything better than new. Not one complaint from them, not even evidence that they were here other than the fact that my chimney looks great. I asked him to provide me some photographs so I can upload before and after photos for this review, when he does it I will. On a side note, Bob has a hobby of creating outdoor sculptures out of making molds from large leaves in creating fountains or birdbaths out of them. He brought me one as a gift as well as a book on mortar. Bob is a real stonemason; this is different than a bricklayer who are the typical guys you see building commercial buildings. This trade has been around since the beginning of the Freemasons and is a dying art. Part of the reason I got my work done right away was because two years from now Bob may retire. He is strong as an ox however no one works forever especially in the labor-intensive field like this. I asked a man once why he moved his home brick by brick only a few cities away to a different neighborhood and lot and he told me that his home was built more than 100 years ago by one of the shipping barons that lived on millionaires row in Cleveland. He said that there is no one in existence today that can hand carve marble mantles and pillars? All of those things are now done on CNC machines in China. Bob is not only honest and professional but a real gentleman which is equally as difficult to find these days. He's reminiscent of the contractors that arrived from Europe by boat to build these mega-mansions that are still in existence today in Shaker Heights. By the way? Guess who those people call to work on their slate roofs and extensive chimney systems? Thompson masonry. I strongly suggest at least getting an estimate from Bob before you make any decision to work with some roofing company or another Mason.

An excellent service experience. I was not here to meet Bob and his partner but the result looks terrific. Bob did a great job of matching grout color, covering all areas where work was needed (even sections that were well hidden) and made many recommendations to my wife on what we could do to maintain our mid-century home in the Forest Hill area of Cleveland Heights, into the future. They did an excellent clean-up job also. I was also pleasantly surprised how quickly Bob was able to schedule the work for us during the busy summer season. I highly recommend Thompson's Masonry from Chesterland, Ohio

He could not find bricks to match the existing ones. He fixed my chimney free of charge because of this. He had to reseal some flashing and managed to fix the existing bricks, rather than replacing them. He also waterproofed everything and matched the existing mortar, which was important to me. His prices were the highest, but I can see the worth in his services! He is so meticulous about the work he does. He also sealed all of the bricks around my home, until he used up all of the sealant he had. I was also very happy with his communication, he always let me know if there were any changes to our schedule. I was so very impressed by him and his ethic, I will definitely recommend him to anyone!

I don't remember exact dates... but I originally contacted Thompson's Masonry in May 2013. Bob came out in early June 2013 and wrote an estimate. We originally just wanted tuckpointing, but since it was a smaller job and that alone wouldn't be worth his time, he suggested fixing the crack in the front porch at the same time. He seemed very knowledgeable and for both tuckpointing and concrete repair, his estimate was reasonable. We scheduled the job for mid-July. I remember there was some back-and-forth in trying to get a hold of the company throughout the process of getting the estimate and scheduling... but nothing I would consider unreasonable for a busy small business. When the time came for the job, Thompson's was backlogged with work due to all the rain we got in July that pushed back other jobs. I wasn't happy about having to reschedule, but our repairs weren't an emergency and I'm understanding that no one can control the weather. Even though the date got pushed back and there were some communication issues, I still felt Thompson's Masonry was the best of the businesses we received estimates from. The work was finally done on September 6 and it was worth the wait! Bob was very thorough. He walked around the entire house with me inspecting every bit of exposed brick. He repaired small cracks that I wouldn't have even noticed until they became bigger issues. I was happy to have it all taken care of at once. The tuckpointing turned out great. The color matches exactly. In the picture I've included, the part they did is the vertical line. The color on the concrete repair doesn't match quite as well... but it looks a LOT better than it did before! They also sprayed all the brick with a sealer to repel water. Overall, I'm very happy. Thompson's Masonry definitely exceeded our expectations!
