I found Frank and his wife to be wonderful people. They were willing to work with me. Anyone else considering using his professional/expert services must understand that he seems to be scheduled and booked in advanced. I did not find this a problem, his work was worth the wait.
Description of Work: Brick facade of 1950 house. Stone top/caps dramatically shifted. Frank came and removed & repositioned all stone caps level. He also caulked entire wall & did minor repairs to the stoop. Another contractor insisted that the entire wall needed to be torn down at a cost of $1500 plus the house would have required a new siding job! I knew from researching, that the facade just needed some repairs. I was thrilled to find Frank!

Because Mr. Scherer was honest and concerned enough to share with me a better way-even though it may have cost him a job- he gave me good (free) advice.
Description of Work: I called Mr. Scherer along with three other mason contractors to get ideas and bid on replacing the steel lintel over two overhead doors. They had separated from the blockwork above and were sagging about three inches, looking as if they were going to fall on someone's head any minute. Of the four, Mr. Scherer was the only one to think of an alternative way of fixing this problem. Instead of replacing the lintels by taking out blocks and having the doors out of operation for days, he remembered having a welder fix a similar situation at another job he was on. He recommended a welder, gave me his name and number. The welder fixed both in one day. He cleaned the rust off instead of having to replace the lintels. He welded a steel reinforcement bar over both doors, making the lintels fit the way they were originally. This saved me thousands of dollars and days of labor.

Frank and his crew were very professional. They did an excellent job on the chimney, and kept me informed of what they were doing and why. Frank took the extra time and effort to deal with the city building department over confusion on whether I needed a work permit or not. They did an excellent job, even when the weather turned cold and rainy on them.

It went well. Both houses were done on schedule. The crew was responsive, hard-working, and punctual. The tuck pointing matched the original mortar. The window plates were caulked as appropriate, and the clean-up was thorough.
Description of Work: I needed tuck pointing on both my house and my mother's house. The houses are brick, built in 1945 and 1939 respectively. My house received $600 worth of work, my mother's house $800.

When I first called, the woman I spoke with told me that Frank made his own appointments, that it might be a couple of days and that she would keep me advised of any delays. I heard nothing until about 10 days later when I was called and informed that Frank could give me an estimate the following Saturday. I declined since in the interim I had been able to get other quotes and already committed to a different contractor. Based on the good experiences of other Angie's subscribers we looked forward to working with this contractor. It is unfortunate that this company was not more responsive by at least letting me know there would be a delay, rather than never calling back quickly as they committed to doing.

Mr. Scherer was somewhat hard to get hold of initially, and I needed to make one or two follow-up phone calls before I actually was able to talk to him. After that, however, he was responsive and dependable. He came to inspect and bid on the job, even though it was not particularly large and involved coming across town from Berea. He and his crew arrived at the specified time on the day we had agreed. The work was done in one day. He and his crew were polite and courteous and cleaned up the job site well. On the front porch and sandstone facing, he spent time to match the existing mortar.
Description of Work: Rebuild one set of outside steps that were sandstone tops with brick supporting structure; tuckpoint second set of steps; cut and refill joints in sandstone facing; cut and refill joints between stone blocks on front porch. (Note that work was done in June 2005, even though this report is being filed in 2008.)

Overall, I'm pleased with the work that Frank's crew did. The fireplace chimney had a quite a few bricks that were deteriorating. In addition, the bricks that had to be replaced were not standard, they had a pinkish color that was probably no longer available. To replace the brick on the chimney, the crew had to install scaffolding. After the crew began cutting out the old brick, I took a look at the bricks they were going to use as a replacement. Although I didn't expect the new bricks would match the existing chimney, I felt that the bricks selected were not close enough. Without complaint, they went back to the brickyard and found other bricks that were more acceptable even though it slowed them down. The work was completed over two days and they cleaned up after the job. I had to call them back because I thought there were several areas that still needed to be tuck pointed. They came back that same day and finished the job. When finished the chimney is in good shape. The front porch bricks were totally replaced with new bricks and it looks better than the original. I believe Frank had quoted this job based upon replacing about 60 bricks. He had to replaced over 100 as additional bricks deteriorated as he was cutting out old brick on the second floor of the scaffolding. He did not charge me any more than the original estimate because he said that it was his fault for not finding this.
Description of Work: Replace two courses of brick on the front porch and replace flaking brick on the fireplace chimney.

This is really a top-notch operation. Frank gave us a very reasonable estimate and did not try to push any additional work on us. The crew did most of the areas. A day later we found they had missed a few and did not clean up as much as we would like (although we learned that masonry is an inherently messy operation and hard to catch every bit of grout that goes flying!). We phoned Frank and within an hour the crew was back. They were extremely polite and fixed all the missed spots and more besides! We need some step work done and will certainly use them again. The only issue with them is the long wait, but I am sure they are in high demand.
Description of Work: We have a 50-year-old brick home in need of tuck-pointing at a number of locations. Frank came out and went over the house carefully and noted all the spots. His crew came out and repaired them.

Frank showed up with in two days of initial contact to look over job and give a quote. I was scheduled out of town the week following quote and I wanted to be on site when the work was going on. Frank did not have a problem with that he just said, "Give me a call when you are ready." I called him the Monday following my return home and Frank and crew were on site ready to work the following morning. Work was complete about four and a half hours later. It was necessary to replace many bricks due to their deterioration. The match is so close that I can not tell where the new bricks meet the old. They cleaned up the work area to the extent that it is impossible to tell that work was done except for the fact the porch looks GREAT! Pete Giblin

My overall experience with Frank was very positive. He is a great craftsman and recommended a design that was the most structurally sound, though required more digging on his part. The finished job looks great. We are really pleased. His pricing was very competitive and he was easy to work with on the job. My only frustration with him was the scheduling process, we weren't sure when he was going to do the job until he showed up to start. In hindsight, a minor problem since the job was well done.
Description of Work: Frank replaced and rebuilt our front and back entrance stoops. The job included expanding the front stoop footer and replacing the 3'x 6' top stone. He also replaced a number of bricks to blend the new footer in with the front of the house.

I knew no one that did chimney repairs and needed one quickly. I subscribed to Angie's list which turned out to be the best thing to do! I reviewed several listings on the A list, especially what people had to say. Frank seemed to have the best comments. I was headed out of town for a week vacation so I called Frank and left him my cell phone number and figured I'd call some others on the list when I got back home. While I was on vacation Frank called and was glad to go to our house, while I was gone, and do an estimate. When I returned home I hadn't been home more than a couple of days when Frank's wife called with the price estimate. I knew from Angie's list that it was a fair estimate so I said to go ahead. The original price was $2600 because I had two chimneys involved. I also had been told by an expert not to hire anyone who didn't have scaffolding or a lift. Frank called and said it was perfect timing because he had the use of a lift. The job was completed very quickly and very professionally. Also the clean-up was A1. It turned out that Frank also saved me $800 because one of the chimneys didn't need any work at all. I'd seen that trait in Angie's list and would recommend Frank and his crew to anyone.

Frank was asked to provide me with an estimate. A week after he was supposed to have given me the estimate he finally called to tell me that he had one. I did not even think at that time I would be hearing back from him. He quoted me a price that was over double ($800-$900) the person that I went with and claimed I need my entire chimney rebuilt (two other professionals did not agree). I did not find Frank to be professional. He did not respond back in a timely manner and I felt he was trying to make me replace a chimney that didn't need it.

I have played phone tag with this company for at least a month and have given up trying have them come out and look at some brick steps needing repair. Initially we had asked to be present when the job was quoted but when that wasn't working we told them to come out anyway with us not there. We could never get a definite day when they would come out. I finally gave them a deadline and said if it was not made we were not interested. They still called back to try to schedule a day. It should not be that difficult to get an estimate and I don't have the time to spend on the phone trying to make it happen. This company is unreliable and hard to schedule.

I had to make 2 phone calls before receiving a call back. I finally received a return call about a week after my first call from a woman who left a message on my phone. I returned the call the next day and left a message...she did return this call promptly. She told me that Frank sets his own appointments and he would be calling me to set up an appointment. She called me again about 4 days later- again stating that Frank would be calling me because he was doing estimates Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As of today, Wednesday evening I have not received a call from Frank to set up an appointment. I tried to avoid writing these negative comments but, having made my first call to him over 2 weeks ago and not speaking with him yet, I find them to be justified. His rating in Angie's list reflect a different level of customer service than I experienced. I am disappointed, as I was hoping to get his expert advice and possibly working with him.

I have done some research and found this company on Angie's list. He knows what he is doing when it comes to repairing old brick buildings. His estimate was accurate. He did an excellent job and the condo association is hiring him again to do other walls.
