Although Frank might take a few days to get back to you, he is worth the wait. He was good humored about everything, and managed the project seamlessly.
Description of Work: Frank designed and executed a replacement front porch for our house. This included digging and pouring footers, building the porch from brick, laying sandstone steps, and pouring a top.

Frank and his team did the typical excellent work I have come to expect from the previous jobs they have done for me. In this case, the City of Cleveland Heights' point-of-sale inspection report required that I have extensive tuck-pointing and other masonry repairs done on my home prior to the sale. We had a short time frame and Frank worked with us. (Readers of this review should be aware that masonry work is extremely weather-dependent; not only does rain or high winds interfere with a job but the jobs which are ahead of you in the mason's queue can be slowed by a sudden drop in temperature, for example, as this will lead to slower drying/setting time). Frank was also instrumental in assisting me with an issue related to other elements of the city's point-of-sale inspection--items which didn't show up on the buyer's inspection and which were much less necessary than the chimney and tuckpointing repair we did at this time. Frank helped save me a lot of money and that is his standard approach. I know that many customers are wary of contractors for trying to run up the bill or include unnecessary work. This is not the case with Frank and you should have full confidence in his advice and recommendations.

We felt the charges were high. Mr. Scherer came to do the estimate, but actually sent someone else to do the work. It was adequate, not terrific. I would question who is doing the work and find out what their capabilities actually were

Response from Frank Scherer
I AM SORRY THIS MEMBER FEELS THIS WAY. I RECOMMENDED THAT SOME OF THE AREAS WE WORKED ON SHOULD BE REBUILT, BUT SHE WAS SELLING THE HOUSE AND ONLY WANTED TO SPEND THE MONEY TO PATCH IT UP TO PASS INSPECTION. I HAD TWO MEN WORKING ON HER HOUSE THAT HAVE WORKED WITH ME FOR MORE THAN 4 YEARS EACH AND KNOW WHAT I EXPECT. I ALSO CAME TO THE HOUSE MYSELF FOR ABOUT AN HOUR DURING THE JOB TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL AREAS WERE TAKING CARE OF. AS FAR AS PRICE BEING HIGH. IF YOU FIGURE OUT HOW MANY MEN WERE THERE FOR THE TIME THEY WAS THERE. I WOULD BET SHE PAYS HER LAWN GUYS MORE. I GUESS YOU CANT MAKE EVERYBODY HAPPY EVEN IF YOU ARE TRYING TO HELP THEM OUT.

Frank was my main contact and did the work with an assistant. He came to my house on a weekend and surveyed the area that needed attention. He gave me a quote of $250 and I told him I'd like him to do the work. I told Frank that I was not in a rush so he could do the job at his convenience and I did not need to be there. Frank came out on a weekday and took care of everything. I did not have to miss any work. He left an invoice and I sent him a check. He later called to make sure that I was happy with everything. I told him that everything looks good.

I requested an inspection and estimate for probable chimney repair because of some pieces of mortar I found in the firebox. I expected any work not to be done until next Spring because of the cold weather so I was in no hurry. Frank Scherer came and inspected the chimney inside and out. He said the pieces of mortar did not come from between the bricks and posed no fire hazard and no repair was necessary. Nor did the chimney need cleaning. He was very professional and knowledgeable, and answered all my questions. When I asked him how much I owed him for the service call he said there was no charge because he didn't do any work. I will certainly use him for any chimney work in the future because I feel he would charge a fair price and not take advantage of me.

When he came out for the estimate I was very pleased with him. He gave me an estimate of around $450 and he even offered to explain to me how I could do it myself but I told him I would prefer to have him do the work. His two workmen were very nice and very efficient. I have had other people try to do the work I hired Frank Scherer for but none of them were able to repair it correctly. They did a beautiful job and I am very, very pleased. The total cost of the job ended up coming in under the estimate!

I spoke with Frank, and we worked out scheduling as he seems to do all the work himself. It took a little while to get the slabs for the steps, which was understandable. The brick work and the steps came out wonderfully. Frank did a beautiful job and I thought the price was reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend him as he does top notch work.
Description of Work: Two sandstone front steps were cracked and needed to be replaced. The underlying brick work had also sunk into the ground and needed to be leveled. These steps were in front of a concrete porch with a brick footer. The mortar had crumbled and the bricks were loose and sinking in one area. All of this had to be repaired.

The job turned out just as I visualized it. Frank was slow to respond to a commitment to do the job, it took a few phone calls from me to him. However, it was a small job and it was the busy season for this type of work, a few other contractors just said it was not worth their while. The job was completed in one day, and they cleaned everything up before they left. (Frank came back to cut the cement a few days later) My only wish would have been for them to remove the excess dirt, which I had to deal with, I would have paid extra, but I did not ask. I found Frank and his associate very professional, the work outstanding.
Description of Work: Two dirt areas appx 6' to 8' by 4' were dug out and concrete pads poured, old wood edging (appx 20 feet down the side and back of the house removed and Decorative brick edging put in.

I couldn't be home when Frank came to first see the house so he walked me through what he found over the phone. He was very polite and they worked quickly. They took care to make sure the blasting did not go into my neighbors open windows.
Description of Work: I have a brick home and there were several places around my home where there were long step cracks and areas that were losing mortar. The day of the job Frank and his guy showed up on time blasted all of the areas to be tucked pointed and then filled in the areas. They matched the color really well and now that its dry you can't tell from the street where there was tuck-pointing.

I am so satisfied with Frank's work and business attitude, that if I need masonry work of any type, I will have Frank, do it. Not only did he do a quality job, but he brought little things to my attention, like a crack in stone siding, which he took care of, at no extra charge. He returns calls and is prompt. His workers are just like him. Competent, quiet and nice. The clean up, which was extensive, due to the chimney work, my light gray roof, had another color dust on it. It was excellent and thorough. if all businesses operated like Frank, I wouldn't need Angie's list.

They came out and gave me a good price to get the job done. They did good work. Around the back of my house there was some problems with a brick wall that needed repaired, and they informed me of exactly what was wrong with it and were able to take it down and rebuild it. They also tuck pointed some bricks at no extra charge. They even gave me instructions and tools on how to do the rest of the work when I needed to have it done.

He was very reasonable in price and impressed me by taking color samples to the house so he could accurately match the mortar. (Few do that, and one other mason even told me he would have to remove all the mortar because it would be too difficult to match.)Frank also explained that his crew had a grinder so they could properly grind out any old mortar before adding new. He was more than accommodating in scheduling the tuckpointing on the one day that I could be there. The men arrived promptly and worked diligently to tuckpoint the house to my satisfaction. Frank had me walk around the house with him before they started so he could point out the areas they would tuckpoint. When I mentioned some other areas, the guys also did those at no extra cost. When finished, they had me walk around the house again to make sure I was satisfied. Frank and his men are Angie's List Super Service Award Winners who I would recommend to anyone.
Description of Work: Frank and his masterful assistants tuckpointed my son's house which also included correcting unsightly areas where the previous owners had attempted to tuckpoint the house themselves. I called Frank for a free estimate which was provided promptly.

Frank was flexible and gave us a few options. When we finally decided exactly how to go forward, his team came over and cranked out the job in a single afternoon. Admittedly it wasn't a hard job, but it was a detail job and they did great work on our historic house. I have recommended Frank to several other people as a result of this job.
