Description of Work: Canton office referred us to closer Davey Tree service company (Solon). They were VERY quick to come out, quote, and get started with the work. They were loaded with much equipment but were very fast to shift their equipment out of the way to get down driveway or accommodate traffic on the street. Great crew with positive, can-do attitude; even friendly with our little dog! |Hope they will still offer us an Angie's Discount?!?

Description of Work: I had two huge oak trees removed from my back yard. They were over 75 years old but were very healthy. My concern was wind storm damage to our home or an adjacent building.I hired Davey Tree to remove the two trees and grind the stumps. Their $6000 quote was $1000 greater then the next highest quote; but I went with Davey because of their reputation as tree experts. |They did in fact do a great job removing the trees. They hired the use of a huge crane with operator. In about six hours both trees were out. The two remaining hours of the day were spent grinding the stumps. My fence had been removed to allow for the huge grinder. |Day two involved two workmen showing up about 10am with two wheel barrows. They spent the rest of the day carting out the wood chips, As they were leaving I ask where the grinder was to finish the stump grinding. They didn't appear to have an answer but said they would leave the fence down and get the grinder back. |The next morning I checked the site and found the fence back up, apparently Davey had left town. The next day I received the invoice indicating the job had been completed. |I returned the invoice unpaid and asked that the job be first completed I had Davey management see the situation and it was agreed the stumps were not sufficiently ground; in fact one stump was still above ground and the other was about 2 inches below ground. A few days later the grinder returned, fence was removed and the workers spent about six hours at the site. They left assuring me the job was now ok; I should have checked things out. |When I did check it out I found one stump partially above ground and the other about 4 inch below ground. Neither were ground sufficiently to allow for plants, flowers and even lawn. |Davey management again came and confirmed the poor grinding job. A few days later the crew came back, this time with the manager, and finally the job was done properly. |My conclusion: I rate Davey Tree as A for tree removal and F for stump grinding. |Note for Angie's List: It would be useful if you could get from the tree service community a definition of what Stump Grinding is. Your membership needs to be assured that their stumps are ground sufficiently to accommodate the planting of grass, flowers ECT. My definition would include the diameter of the tree, the diameter of the area around the tree which may contain shallow roots and a minimum depth of 8 inches. |
