Started on May 8 2012. Removed bathroom vanity and toilet to lay new carpet tiles. Created water leaks in sink and toilet lines and didn't fix them until I brought it to their attention. Took me a while to clean it up and dry it out after the leak was repaired. New windows were not ?wrapped? on the outside until the second week after they were installed. The inside wall, of one of the new windows, had spray foam insulation on the wall. The trim will not cover, I?ll have to paint. Came home one day and found dirt tracked in my bedroom. There wasn't any work being done in my bedroom. They had also been in the upstairs and there wasn't any work being done there. Came home one day and found a bottle of Sports drink in my refrigerator. My livingroom ceiling fan was taken down and damaged in the process. I had to buy a new one, it was installed free of charge. New Bathroom door was installed and had to be adjusted three times so it would stay open. When the new bathroom window was installed the bathroom tub was chipped in the process even though I had asked them twice to be careful. I have a dark blemish where they tried to repair the tub. I'm not happy because this shouldn?t have happened in the first place. But now it's November and the biggest problem is I have mice running around in my livingroom ceiling. The livingroom ceiling is supposed to be insulated. If it is, why am I hearing mice running around in the ceiling? I contacted Jim Randall and his response is "I am not a rodent expert, but I do know they can and WILL burrow through insulation and other materials. You are going to have to call an exterminator." My feeling is if my livingroom ceiling is insulated, then someone has to prove it. Mice would have a very difficult time "burrowing" through insulation and it sounds like they have free reign. My Opinion of Kiefer-Randall: If I was at home when the work was being done, there weren?t any problems. It only happened when I wasn?t there. I want to be able to trust someone coming into my home. I don?t want to take time off from work to babysit. I expect work to be guaranteed. The job started on May 8, 2012 but never finished until August 16, 2012 for a job that was supposed to take 1.5 weeks.
Description of Work: New carpet tiles installed in bathroom. New bathroom window installed. New bathroom door installed. Bathroom electrical light switch was moved and an outlet was included. Four (4) new windows installed. Livingroom ceiling removed and new ceiling installed plus insulation and painted. Dry wall installed around chimney area in livingroom and painted. Ceramic tiles installed in front of chimney area and in front of front door. Electrical outlets changed and new one installed in livingroom. Kitchen faucet was repaired.

Response from Kiefer-Randall Construction & Remodeling LLC
We are upset when we receive an unfavorable review such as this, obviously, and it is quite out of the norm for us. I do need to provide explanations and clarifications to protect our reputation. We believed we had done everything in our power to make you as happy as possible with the outcome of our work until this latest episode with rodents in your home, over 3 1/2 months since we completed the project. You knew they were up there even prior to our doing any work as you sprayed foam insulation in the area you suspected they had been getting through during our removal and replacement of your living room ceiling. I made NO guarantees that our work would keep out rodents, written or otherwise, only to attempt to determine the source of their infiltration. In fact, I didn’t know the problem resurfaced prior to receiving your email a few nights ago. The water leak in the bathroom was due to old shut off valves which were replaced (at no additional charge to you) after we were notified there was a leak on the bathroom carpet. We would not expect you to live with a plumbing leak. It was difficult to detect a leak on a very dark colored carpet. The window wraps were delayed due to the special machine that bends the aluminum on use at another job. The windows nor the framing were compromised. We regret there was foam insulation overspray and it was completely scraped away so that a paint touch up would be successful. We also added new trim on some windows so that the foam insulation would be covered at no charge to you. We also discussed in later conversations about our regret that dirt had been accidently tracked onto your bedroom carpet. This occurred because we needed to measure the windows for shutters. Had it not cleaned up we would have hired a professional to come in and clean the soiled carpet. You had asked for a quote for new shutters on all your windows and that is why we had been upstairs, to properly measure for the shutters. You told me to order “Burgundy” color shutters. I did, and when they came in you told me they were the wrong color so we reordered all new sets of shutters in the “Bordeaux” color. We absorbed the additional cost of the restocking charge. This was an item that added to the delays in getting the work completed in a timely fashion. We also installed ceramic tile inside your front door and underneath the heating unit in the living room, again at NO additional charge to you. The employee that used your refrigerator to keep his sports drink cold has been admonished and told to use a personal cooler. We relocated your ten plus year old fan toward the center of the living room ceiling. You called me to tell me that the slow speed on the fan was now so slow as to be ineffective at cooling. The work was done carefully. All of the other speeds were not affected, however, I offered to install your new purchased ceiling fan at no cost to you, which we did. The bathroom door was selected by you and had some faults that were corrected. Framing on the door apparently was to blame. We even went out of our way to pick up the door for you when you wanted it. You warned us about the bathtub and proper precautions were taken to protect it, however you found a small ding and brought it to our attention. The tub was manufactured in the eighties and we spent many man hours trying to find the right composition of color and material to fix the ding. I am not convinced that the damage was caused by us, but we erred on the side of trying to keep you happy. Since your latest report now about the rodents I have asked my employees to please remember back to the day the ceiling was installed. They have both insisted that insulation was in fact delivered and installed in your living room ceiling. Since our integrity has now been publicly called into question, I offer this remedy publicly: please get ahold of me so we can plan to drill some holes into the new ceiling to make sure there is insulation installed. If there is not, I will remove the ceiling, ceiling fan, and crown moulding, install the insulation, reinstall a new ceiling and reinstall the fan as well as prime and paint the new ceiling. If insulation is present, then I will respectfully ask you to pay us for our time to make the additional trips necessary to fill the hole or holes and sand them smooth so you can complete the priming and paint touch ups. My advice still stands to contact an exterminator. Lastly, one of my key employees that was overseeing your project came down with a serious illness during the time we were doing the work on your home, creating many other challenges for our company besides yours and we regret that the management of your project was not typical for our company. I expressed this shortly after your project completion in an email to you so that you might indeed, have some grace and understanding with us.

From the first contact of setting up an appointment for an estimate to the completion of the 2 jobs, Tim and the assigned crew were professional, friendly and extremely efficient. Due to health issues we had to reschedule twice, Tim was so accommodating and there are no words to express my appreciation for that. My family would highly recommend Keifer Randall and we will be contacting them in the future. Thank you Tim and crew

They were good. We did not have any issues with them.
Description of Work: Kiefer-Randall remodeled our bathroom. They basically ripped everything out of the room. We provided new things for the room that they installed. The tub was only resurfaced, we didn't have to replace the tub, but basically everything else was replaced, toilet, sink, vanity. They did the floor too.

Our first hope was to add a shower to the room. Jim Randall and Tim Kiefer gave us very nice design options. They put a great deal of time and thought into it all. But my husband and I decided the additional cost wasn't in the budget. Keifer-Randall were okay and respectful of our decision, and retained their enthusiasm. Work started mid July 2011 and progressed around some unexpected circumstances within our family. Mark was fabulous. His work is beautiful and I absolutely love the tile floor!!! Also, in late September, we asked if they could install 'quarter round' on the baseboard in most of the house. At that time, the company was swamped with helping families recover flooded homes. We understood, purchased the wood, and patiently waited to fit in their schedule. Well, we didn't have to wait long, and Mark installed the trim in a few hours. Once again, beautiful work! Our experience with the Kiefer-Randall team was great! We have more remodeling ideas on our list, and we look forward to working with Jim, Tim, and their crew again. (p.s. Please forgive my procrastination with getting this review online. Thank you.)
Description of Work: Remodeled half bath: removed old fixtures and plumbing; repaired walls, ceiling and trim; rewired electric, adding an outlet; removed old flooring; installed new tile floor, plumbing and fixtures, threshold, and 2 new solid doors; painted walls, ceiling, and trim; reinstalled original wall mirror. It is all beautiful, especially the tile floor!

Initial work was to be performed in early Sept, 2011. The day the siding was delivered, rains from Tropical Storm Lee caused MAJOR flooding that essentially caused us to have to gut the house. Due to workload the contractor picked up from the flood as well as work I had to do on the house to clean up and get it in shape to be sided, work didn't start until early December. Flood damage caused additional work that was above the scope of the original contract to need to be performed so KR worked with me to develop a new estimate/contract to handle all of the work. Once the work started, the crew worked diligently to complete as quickly as possible, as I needed the outside of the house completed before the winter weather set in here in NY. There were several days where the temperature was so cold that i don;t know how they could work, but they did. Also, there were a few days where we had rain so they could not work outside. The work was performed in an excellent manner. The crew lead (Sean) contacted me every day they worked to give me a status update. Whenever I had questions he was very responsive, and was willing to look into any potential issues and resolve them before they became real issues. The working crew members were very skilled and were very accommodating when I stopped by the site to see how they were doing - particularly Anthony. This is the second job I have had KR perform (the first was also a result of the same flooding, but that was a drywall repair at my primary residence, that was performed primarily by Travis- which I am also very pleased with). What pleased me the most was the willingness of KR management to work with me and adjust our original contract to react to the changes caused by the flooding - what was originally expected to be a 1-2 week project actually took that amount of time, but due to the flooding, the elapsed time stretched to 4 months - and KR's willingness to work with me made a painful experience much more tolerable. Although the price was higher than competitors, that was made up for by the quality of the workmanship as well as the professional attitude from top to bottom on the KR team. I appreciate what they did for me and would not hesitate to recommend them.

I contracted with Tim for some minor repairs. Tim was punctual and responsive throughout the estimate process. Before work was scheduled to start, my house along with my entire town and much of the region was indundated by the Tropical Storm Lee flooding disaster, and I had to gut my entire first floor. Tim worked with me to survey the damage, prepare an estimate for new repairs, work out financing and reschedule a complete remodeling. This was obviously a very stressful process in the post-flood chaos and did not go as smoothly on either of our ends as I believe it would have under more normal circumstances. After initial delays, work was performed as promised. Tim's crew worked hard and communications were good during a time when many contractors have been impossible to reach and uninterested in dealing with a small old house.

Overall my first experience with Kiefer-Randall was pretty solid. When we decided to get this roof fixed, we contacted at least half a dozen roofing contractors in the area, 5 of which would not return phone messages or E-mails, and one who told us "you picked a bad time to want a new roof." Anyway, Jim from Kiefer Randall responded in less than 24 hours from my first contact with them, was very professional and seemed eager and appreciative to receive our business. Jim came to the house less than a week later, was very polite, took a lot of pictures of our job site, provided us with references and again seemed eager to get our business. He provided us with an estimate with a few days after that, a contract was signed the following week and work began the week after that. If I ever had a question, Jim was quick to respond to my E-mails and answer them thoroughly even on a weekend. The office staff was very courteous and professional when I called them and you could tell both Tim and Jim wanted you to have a good experience with them and they wanted you to be pleased with your job. Overall the communication was great, from Tim and Jim at the office, to the project manager Shawn and the workers we had at the house. Everyone was polite in answering questions, respecting your property, your time, etc.
Description of Work: On the 2nd floor of our 1930s home there is a flat roof with a deck sitting on top of it. This deck and flat roof is directly above the back half of our kitchen on the main level of our home. Our problem started when we received around 6-8 inches of snow on the deck and flat . The snow would accumulate, it would get warmer and the snow would melt. It was at this time we noticed water slowly started to drip through a flushmount lighting fixture in our kitchen, coming from the deck and flat roof directly above. The dripping also occurred this past fall during the week of the September floods. During the heavy rainfall, water wouldn't neccessarily accumulate on the deck and roof, but we were still seeing a pretty steady drip of water through the exact same spot in our kitchen. The crew from Kiefer-Randall Construction came out, gave me an estimate, and the work started fairly quickly after that due to the above-average temperatures and good weather. To save costs, I removed the old wooden decking myself so it was taken all the way down to the old rubber membrane for Kiefer-Randall. They came out and stripped all the old rubber membrane and flashing from the roof, along with removing all of the floorboards that were underneath the rubber membrane. During this, they noticed that some of the insulation was highly saturated, so they went ahead and replaced some of it with new insulation. They also took the time to sure up some of the joists by "sistering" some of them to sure up the overall stability. They then sheeted the entire surface in MDF for the lower level of the roof and then used a "black board" material over this, which I was told was commonly used on roofs, was super moisture resistant and would help in prevent even further in preventing the leaks from occurring. They finished it up with putting runoff edges, applying the rubber membrane surface to the roof and installing the new flashing and reattaching my gutter and downspout. Not only is the roof now functional, it looks good and we now have the peace of mind that this leaking won't happen again.

Description of Work: Contacted them for roof quote. They did call me back 3 days later on a Saturday. I was unavailable and called them back on Monday...they never returned my call. I called them as they were recommended by previous work, but I would never again call them for a quote. ***UPDATE*** This is a follow-up to my report dated 10/31/11. Jim Randall contacted me after submitting my first report. He apologized for not getting back to me, but the busy schedule due to the flooding was the casue of him not calling me back. Jim came out an provided me a quote on my roof. He was very polite, professional, and personable. Thank you Jim for your response.

Hi Member, As per our conversation today, we regret that your return phone call was missed. The catastrophic flooding in the area certainly took it's toll on our resources and ability to handle the very large amount of damage estimate requests and phone calls we received since then and that are ongoing as the area gets back on it's feet. We will see you on Wednesday and will certainly give your project the utmost priority. Thank you for your understanding and the second chance!

I think, because of all the rain we had during September, it was difficult for this company to keep people working. Flooding was not a problem at my residence; however, the first worker on the job said he "lost everything" in the flood but had to continue to work. He ultimately got promoted and headed up a two man team to take his place. This two man team found it difficult to keep working, see problems or handle solutions. I, as the home owner, needed to point out problems and suggest solutions on several occasions. This situation, after three weeks into the project, was resolved after I had a meeting with the owners. A new 2 man team was assigned to finish the job, and did so in only two days. And, the owners reimbursed me for the time I had to be off work to supervise the job to avert the problems encountered. It was ultimately done to my satisfaction. I think the owners would do anything to make sure the ultimate project would be completed to the owner's satisfaction. They did keep trying. I think the crew needed to be re-evaluated as to their compatibility and skills and I think the weather just didn't cooperate. This is a difficult critique.
Description of Work: This job was contracted for in June 2011. Start of construction to be the end of August, first week in September. Due to the flooding, they were unable to start work until the third week in September and, it took them three weeks to complete a week job. There were some construction problems that were ultimately rectified. The overall job ended well. The people that make up this company from owners to workers are very nice. The owners are very professional and make sure that the job is done to the customer's satisfaction no matter how long it takes.

Thank you for your difficult, but very fair critique. As evidenced by our usual ratings here and elsewhere this is quite a departure from our typical review and performance. The days and weeks following the catastrophic flooding in the area represented crisis management at it's best. Between the aforementioned worker losing everything to the flood, and customers and management losing power for days it was a real challenge to keep everything moving forward smoothly as it usually does for us. I hope that others reading this review might stop and consider all that the area was going through at the time and your statement that “I think the owners would do anything to make sure the ultimate project would be completed to the owner's satisfaction” would help them rest easy about hiring Kiefer-Randall for any project.

It was a pleasure to work with Tim. He was quick to respond to my calls and was very professional. His original estimate was much higher but he explained that he was including the cost of replacing siding if it was damaged while taking off the old vent. He said they would try to be very careful in removing it. They were, and as a result, our cost was much less. Absolutely would use them again. Beautiful job!

When I first called K-R, I was not in a rush to have the wall repaired as the rains had stopped. I should have been clear with my expectations for them to remain in touch with me. Four other companies either would not even return my call or came and said they couldn't do the job. That was my only problem. The job was just what I requested. I had no idea of the possible cost as I have never needed this type of work before; I accepted the cost was reasonable.
Description of Work: After contacting 5 different companies, Kiefer-Randall was the only willing to do my "little" job. The wall around my old well, in the basement & a part of my foundation, started cracking and falling. With Spring rains, water started running in the cracks. The men came and smoothed the walls, filled the cracks, put in a screen to control the falling cement, plastered over the area. They then added a header to strengthen the area where cement had previously fallen. I will now be able to use the area for storage even.

On August 8, 2010 I searched the web and came to Service Directory where they were listed; while I was still on the computer Tim Kiefer called me to set up a time to evaluate my plan.He was here within 3 days and had all his professional paperwork and tools to prepare an estimate to the job I was looking for. Another 3 days and he was back to discuss the job; I wanted it to be completed before September 21st and he was honest with me and said that October the first would be the earliest he could begin. Ok lets go with it I said !!!!!! On the 30th of September the supplies were delivered to my home and on October the first the work began. His workforce were here every day until the final inspection and it took the exact number of days estimated to accomplish the completion of the project. The workers were professional and when I had a question about the construction Tim always had an answer for me. The supplies that were used were only the best with no cutting of corners to not comply with the estimate that was given. The doors that were installed were of the best quality and nothing cheap was used for completion. It was the ONLY experience that I have had with any construction people that brought such a positive outcome.
Description of Work: A deck was installed onto the back of my home; it was attached to the back of my home and was brought to the level of my kitchen floor which is about 10 feet from the ground level. from the kitchen there was placed an exit to the deck through a double door . The area in which the doors were placed, there were 2 windows at 3 feet above the floor. The deck is 22 X 12 feet and the only entrance is from inside my home. A deck was built; windows removed and replaced with a combination door to acess the deck.

We met with Jim Randall first on June 20 when he came to our home to discuss a kitchen remodeling project. He was about fifteen minutes late but called to alert us. He spent about two hours with us discussing our project. He made another appointment at the Kiefer Randall office for June 30. He prepared what seemed to us an excellent plan for our remodeling which solved the problems that we had pointed out to him. He went over the plan with us in detail. After thinking about it, we decided not to have a remodeling done right now as we are likely to be selling our home in the near future and just were not sure that we could justify putting that much money into it. When I called to explain to Jim what we had decided, he was very cordial and told us that if we decided to do a less extensive remodeling, they would like to be considered. He displayed the highest level of professionalism in every way in his dealings with us and we will certainly consider this company should we decide to do a remodeling of our kitchen.

Member, Thank you for considering us! The only thing that could have gone better was to have us do your work for you, but we certainly understand the rather large investment in an uncertain economy and your not knowing whether you would stay in the home long enough to enjoy and recoup the investment. I had a real estate agent once tell me that kitchens and baths sell homes! She said that when there are many choices of real estate available, the ones with the best kitchens and baths usually win out, all things considered. The best of luck to you both!

They were very nice and did a very nice job. I was very comfortable with the person who came over. I was willing to work with them but I just didn't want to spend the amount of money that they quoted.
Description of Work: Kiefer-Randall Construction & Remodeling LLC came out and gave me an estimate to pour concrete to fix my patio.

Overall, the job Kiefer-Randall Construction performed was excellent.
Description of Work: I have had a project in my backyard I have wanted to be built for years and had a very hard time finding a contractor to help me. I wanted an enclosure for my pool equipment and since it's right next to my pool and very visable, I wanted something to look nice also. I came up with the idea of a Tiki Bar. I have had several contractors over to show them what I wanted. I couldn't get anyone that wanted to do it since it would be a custom job with no formal plans. Finally I found Jim Randall from Kiefer-Randall Construction and he said they would tackle the job. Jim and Tim both came over to discuss the plans and suggested different ways of building it. They were careful to make sure I was going to be happy with the end result since they had never built one before and I haven't seen any in our local area to compare it to. They arrived early every morning and Tim was onsite a lot to help in construction and oversee his worker. The structure came out exactly how we wanted it and provides protection of our pool equipment. They also picked out a nice blue tile for our bar top that looks great when the pool is open. We now have a great bar area to enjoy by our pool. The entire time Kiefer-Randall was at our house everything was kept very organized and clean. They cleaned up every day after they were finished and our pool area was not affected at all by the work they were doing. They were very accurate in describing the work that was to be performed in the contract and what they actually did. The work was performed in a timely manner to our specifications. We are extremely happy with the work Kiefer-Randall has done for us and will use them in the future. I have told many people about Kiefer-Randall and the quality work they do. They really care and take pride in what they do. Thank You Jim and Tim for helping us complete our backyard oasis.

After Jim Randall, my husband and I discussed everything that we needed done, the work began almost immediately. Shawn arrived early and began working on our roof. Knowing the problem we had with leaking when it rained Shawn worked through terrible windy conditions to get enough of the roof done before the rain storm. How nice to cook in my kitchen that day without getting wet. Shawn arrived again early the next day to finish the roof for us. What a great job. Ryan arrived to remove the kitchen ceiling and plug the hole the skylight left. He also got the electricity working in the kitchen that had stopped working due to corrosion. Once the ceiling had been completed Ryan textured the ceiling. He then installed our new fluorescent lights. He came on the last day to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Everything this company did was professional and detail orientated. The work was done precisely to what we wanted. Awesome job. I will recommend this company to everyone needing any kind of work done.
Description of Work: Jim Randall came to our home to evaluate the damage in our kitchen due to a crack in the ceiling that leaked every time it rained. He then went up on our roof to observe where the water was leaking in from. After discussing all the info given us we asked for a quote. We needed to have our roof redone and our ceiling in the kitchen removed and replaced. We also asked them to take out our skylight over our kitchen. We asked to have new fluorescent lights installed in the kitchen to replace the skylight. Everything on our to do list was taken care of in great detail.

The owners participated in some of the work, and supervised the rest. Contact with me was on-going, to see if I was happy with the progress and how things looked. I have an old house, with uneven floors, walls that weren't plumb, and numerous other quirks. The end result after K-R was done was very professional, and the workers cared about the quality of the job they did. They took pride in their work, and took the time to do it well. Customer satisfaction is of primary importance to the owners and to their employees. I felt comfortable leaving the workers in my house while I went to my own job--it means a lot to me that I could trust them. The overall word that comes to mind when considering Kiefer-Randall is integrity.
Description of Work: This project included removing old walls, checking wiring, putting in new windows, and wrapping them, insulating and repairs as needed to structural walls & floor, moved some electrical, framed the doors, put up drywall and painting.

From the start to the finish, Jim & Tim (and Ben and the rest of the staff) were VERY quick to respond to any issues/changes with nothing but a smile! I had specific ideas that they were willing to accomodate and expanded with their professional computer-designed prototypes before a single nail was removed. As the kitchen progressed, if there were any issues that came up, they were quick to call for permission or new twists to the project. The kitchen turned out GORGEOUS and they thought of every little detail regarding ways to even improve our original ideas.
Description of Work: Our 1960's kitchen was completely demolished, a wall was removed, and a new kitchen from floor to ceiling was installed.
