Good; no concerns.
Description of Work: A new roof on our 2 story home with attached garage. Cost was 15,000. Work was done in a timely manner, professionally and (what appears to be) competently. William Rott has a great reputation and I feel confident that the work was done well.

They were very knowledgable, got on the roof and examined what needed to be done, and the proposal was very specific. They brought letters of reference and pictures from previous jobs, and actual material that might be used on the roof for us to see. They showed us the license proving they were bonded and insured. They also said they were able to get the job done in the next week.

The crews were terrific.....................Rott and Sons have been in the Tonawandas for 100 years - They have a family legacy of honesty and hard work that holds true today!! Good job everybody!!! Thank you Barb
Description of Work: Problem started with a leak in the first floor bathroom...........Called Rott to check out the problem. The roof adjoins the garage roof and the pitch was bad......Rotted the shingles where the shingles met.......They ended up putting in all new insulation in the bathroom ceiling (from the outside)..........installed what they call is a rubber roof so the water will run off properly.................. The rest of the house is two story....................thought all was well and then discovered a leak in a upstairs bedroom over the kitchen. Called again and discovered it was a boot that had split.....................Also had a issue with some facia board on the back of the house - second story, soooooooooooooooo about that time, decided to have the roof completely replaced................ Fifteen years ago we had put a new roof on..........should have lasted longer (but the ice shielding and water shielding was very limited at best - .).......It was put on over the existing - so this time it meant a tearoff.........Also had gutter toppers installed thinking that would take care of the debris in the gutters...............(BIG MISTAKE - ...as they have to pound nails under that last shingle to the gutters...................that did a lot of damage over time............................ So, work done on the bathroom roof, tearoff and new shingles on a two story including attached 2 car garage. Replaced fascia in a couple of spots. Installed all new gutters with the Leaf Relief they install..................ice shielding and water shielding properly installed......................... The house is not only dry, but much warmer................I know this has been a warmer winter, but the days/nites we had 10 and below, the house was perfect...............................

As previous posters mentioned, gentlemen arrived and took measurements for my roof. I am a single lady and don't know much about roofing so he explained in depth what would be taking place to replace my roof. During the pitch (which lasted 2+ hours), the salesmen phoned his daughter and bad-mouthed other contractors. I felt as though he were trying to scare me into going with this company. Needless to say, he finally provided me a $20,000+ quote to tear off my old roof and put on a new one. My house is 1200 sq. ft. and this estimate was almost twice what my other estimates had been. It was easy to set up the appointment for the estimate, but I was not left with a copy to review. Rather I had to take a photograph of the document that was drawn up for my records. Overall, I decided not to go with this company.

Above the client begins with a positive, talking about our consultant’s thoroughness, though she objects to the length of time to do this. It’s difficult, to give enough information to help make an informed decision, without overwhelming someone. We try hard to strike the balance and make it interesting. No one wants to spend money on a roof and certainly don’t want to hear a boatload of information on what that unwelcome project will entail. Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors to consider in doing a roof. Things like the shingles, ventilation, ice shield, flashings and the installation procedures. Who is putting the roof on, the actual ‘men’ doing the work? Are they subcontractors or guys working off the books? This all leads into insurance and quality achieved. Most roofing companies hire subcontractors with guys that work off of the books, avoiding taxes and insurances which save a lot of money. It also exposes people to the risk of being sued and lowers quality. Most are not trained well or don’t know or care what the specifics of your job are; to do it correctly with all details. We play by all of the rules, using our own people (no subcontractors or guys working off the books) therefore costing more but providing positive, longer-lasting results on every level. We also use better materials and installation procedures that cost more initially, but over the life of the roof with actually cost less. Instead of lasting 10-15 years as most roofs last, ours last 25-40 years costing much less per year of use. We give a 20 year transferable workmanship warranty that we honor. We could be as cheap as anyone by making different business decisions. (Use subcontractors and guys that work off of the books or even cheaper products and take shortcuts in our procedures). There are enough of these types of contractors. We decided not to contribute to the low cost, low quality, problem-ridden experiences people are subjected to. If you were in business and had a choice to make, to be part of the problem or part of the solution, which would you choose? It is hard when trying to show the difference, not to address what others are doing by comparison. The differences determine the quality and longevity of the life of the roof. How else would someone justify spending more money? It would be foolish to spend more money if you can see no difference. We understand that and try to, carefully, respectfully, point these out. If we were not careful or respectful enough we are sorry for that. We will look to make sure we are more so. No contractor has ever come out and said “we do terrible work, we are NOT insured and by the way, we won’t come back if there is a problem.” So how do you decide? We believe our “bullet proof” process is what protects you on every level. We certainly wish the client well, but know that more than likely with not choosing us, she will be in the market for a costly repair or even a new roof within much too short of a time. We do sincerely hope that is not her experience, though. Thank you for a chance to respond. Steven J. Rott

I think that they were way overpriced. The gentleman came after two hours to price what he wanted to sell me and it was very aggravating. The salesman came out to give me the quote and he gave me a quote of about $13000 to replace an A Line roof on a small house. I felt that it was a bit high and that wasn't the issue but he just wouldn't stop talking and kept it up continually for two hours to tell me about his product. I do want to know about the materials but you should not take up my precious time on that and that is why I was a little bit aggravated. I talked to another person who dealt with them and thought the same way. It was just a little bit too much. They came out and made sure that they got my attention.

It sounds as though we have not met the requirements of this customer’s time limitation, or expectations of interest in what a roof job entails. When consulting with people considering a major home improvement project and expense, it can be difficult to strike the balance between giving people enough information (so they know their options as well as what the company is about), versus giving too much information, and overwhelming them. We certainly do apologize for not finding that balance in this situation. We sell a superior quality product (that can cost more as a result), and most people want to understand what the differences are, as well as options available. On average, we give the information needed without overwhelming, or challenging people’s patience. Actually, people often thank us for being so thorough. Yet, not everyone wants all that, and so we will continue to work on balancing that information scale. Thanks for the opportunity to respond. Sincerely, Steven Rott

I contacted this company for a roof replacement after contacting several other companies that failed to show for estimates. I was anxious to get my roof replaced because it was leaking, and to the company's credit they sent someone over to do the estimate the day after I called. The sales pitch was very high pressure. They quoted a price of over $17,000 at first, and then lowered the price because of "discounts" that would only apply if I signed the contract that day. When I said it was too expensive the price was lowered to the 3rd different price offered and I was told that I had to sign it right at that moment to get that price. Reluctantly I signed the contract, knowing it was still too expensive at close to $15,000, but I wanted to get the roof done. I arranged for other companies to provide estimates and fortunately used a New York state law to cancel my contract after getting two more estimates for $5000 less. I went with another company who did a full roof replacement, including all new plywood (which was not included in the $17,000 estimate), for $10,400 who did an excellent job. This company is overpriced and uses high pressure tactics to get people to lock into a contract. They don't offer written estimates, which I found odd. A good deal is a good deal and will be available for more than a "take it or leave it" moment. I would avoid using any type of business that operates like this and will not be using this company for future services.

First and most important; if the customer felt high pressure to sign a contract, then we apparently did not do a very good job of communicating, qualifying and presenting options available to him, and we apologize for that. Money saving options should only be offered to the customer when they have given us every indication they would like to buy from us, but are interested in ways to save money. At that point we would discuss any options that could be changed or taken out of the job. Having settled those, we would then discuss other savings possibilities such as senior citizen and job sign discounts. The price, already given apart from these options, is a secure price for thirty days. The only other savings we offer is a time savings discount, where we save on the estimating process. We know that everyone cannot make a decision on that day, so we set our standard pricing to reflect the cost of our representatives coming back. The time savings discount is offered to customers who are electing to sign up that day. It appears our consultant was not careful enough, or misread the customer’s wanting us to do the work, as we do not offer the time savings discount to anyone who isn’t committed to choosing us. Secondly, the customer thought we were overpriced when two other quotes came in with a lower cost, possibly not remembering all that was important to him in what we offer. It is also quite possible that the other quotes were comparably under-priced. Products/services may appear similar, but when purchased, the lower value is ultimately revealed. We may have all experienced purchasing a lower cost item to save money, only to realize that the perceived value was an illusion. Unfortunately and often, the homeowner who wants to believe they got a good job for a low price becomes disillusioned when time proves otherwise. Our roofs last, on average, at least twice as long as other roofs because of what we do; from venting, to valleys, flashing, to something as simple as proper nailing. The thing is, we do a better job. We offer better underlayment, applications, and build a system that lasts and lasts, using our own specialized crews, not sub-contracting, or using guys off the books. We also give and stand behind a twenty year transferable workmanship warranty. We don’t compete on price, because that will only, almost always, get you lower quality. We are right priced for what we offer, and know that if others are charging less, they must be giving less, in quality, security, or service. We wish him well, but know from many years of experience, he most likely did not get the “excellent job” he hopes he got. Thank you for this opportunity to respond. Steven Rott

The salesman, Jerry Rott, was wonderful and I strongly identified with the way they approached their work in regards to trustworthiness, confidence, and quality. He was knowledgeable in the subject area which was probably due to the fact he worked for the company in labor prior to sales. This really helped quite a lot. Though this contractor's quote was nearly double of those given by others I really wanted things to be done right as I consider myself a perfectionist. I was convinced the method by which the work would be performed was both superior, justifying the higher amount of labor and cost. We signed the contract on 9/7/2010 which explicitly stated work would be completed within 30 days however unfortunately things went a little down from there. We did not receive the follow-up calls that were promised. Despite several calls to the business to try to get things moving, it took an entire month to even receive a call to finally schedule a date on which work would be completed for the roof. Later we would discover it was due to a tragic death in the family (it was even on the news) which is fully understandable. All would have been forgiven had the lack of punctuality stopped there but unfortunately it didn't. The work on the roof was completed in late October but the front door, again despite numerous calls and promises, wasn't completed until late November when it was already snowing and bristling cold. The quality of the work was excellent, I felt they stood behind their work and went the extra mile esp since they fell flat on their face in trying to get this worked completed in a timely fashion. It is only that reason I'd ever consider them again in the future. It was very unfortunate and frustrating that the communication and service left so much to be desired. If it was possible to give them a B- or a C+ I would, as neither a B nor a C really fit the bill. So I decided to side with the better of the two out of respect for their commitment to quality work. I've only contracted with this business once so I could have simply been one of those unlucky few that fell between the cracks. Afterall, mistakes do happen, nobody is perfect and we can't expect miracles. I just wish I didn’t have to feel like such a nag, but it seemed like it was the only way to ensure the job was actually ever done. Maybe had they actually been upfront about any delays I might have felt differently.

We would like to thank the member for his understanding considering the extremely unusual circumstances that caused his job schedule to be adversely affected. As to the lack of responsiveness when the member called, I am not certain of the causes. It was likely that he was making calls to either someone who did not have the information needed yet or that he was leaving messages for the representative who had been out of reach for an extended period of time due to the circumstances mentioned along with others that happened at the same time. We certainly regret that, in this case, however it happened; we failed to meet the expectations of our customer, as well as our own standard of care and professionalism. We have things in place to try and catch things that start to fall off the radar. We are always looking for ways to improve our systems and plug any holes, and we are taking a close look at this one, knowing that even in very difficult circumstances, we still have an obligation to take care of our customers. So we will redouble our efforts to meet the tests that come and not leave our customers waiting again. Thank you again to the meber for his understanding and if there is a next time, we will be all he was looking for; communication as well as quality. Sincerely, Steven Rott General Manager

They were professional all the way..from getting the estimate to having the work done. They have teams with specialities...and a coordinator for the job. I found some nails in the grass and driveway when they were done....that's the worst I can say. Overall I was completely satisfied...the salesman gave me a lot of information about the project and the product and services they offered. I knew nothing when I started out but he answered all my questions and I felt confident once I chose them.

Member, Thank you for your great review as well as your confidence in our company. We are pleased that you are completely satisfied with your siding, window and gutter work, as that is what our 102 year old company strives for. As to the “B” in price, we understand. We typically do cost more, but believe that customers, like you, will see the overall greater value provided in using superior products, expert workmanship, and 20 year service warranty (that we really honor). In regards to the nails left behind, we apologize for that, and will direct your clean-up complaint to the appropriate people, so as not to have this happen again. For your inconvenience, we will be sending you a $25.00 gift card to Tops that you can use for gas or groceries (who couldn’t use some help with those?). So, thank you again for your report and thank you for your business! Sincerely, Julie Rott

This customer's first complaint was May 26, 2010 and now they post another complaint about the same issue. It seems that they may harbor a longstanding resentment toward our company for an estimate request (in 2002) they apparently did not get. We regret that the situation did not resolve favorable from the customer's perspective, as we strive for 100% customer satisfaction. However, we did reply and explained our position in our prior response, so we really don't understand where this complaint is coming from at this time or why. Regardless, glad the customer got a great job and God bless them!

called for estimate - one of the Rott family came out and was very pushy, cutting down other contractors. He wanted us to hire him on the spot. When we told him we wanted to get a few estimates he said he would send us a quote. When we hadn't rec'd it a few weeks later, we called and again they said they would send a quote, but never did. Glad we didn't go with them!

There seem to be some inconsistencies in this complaint. It says our representative was very pushy, which is not in his manner. He never gave a price and this appointment and was willing to go back and give an estimate, but unfortunately this didn't happen. What we strive for is a happy customer and sending a price through the mail is hardly the way for that to happen. We prefer to interact face to face and explain the myriad of options to each and every potential customer. Another inconsistency is the timing of this report. We were at this property on Sept. 17, 2002, not 2010 . When our representative tried to go back, he was told they went with another company. Yet this work was not done until Sept. 2009? And they complain about us in 2010? Something is a little off here.

Original estimate approximately $3200. Substantial additional work ($1800) required after old roof was partly removed. The extra work included larger ice shield, removal of gutters, and reinstalling facia. I believe this additional work should have been readily identified and included in original bid.

Response from William C Rott & Son Inc
The member's complaint was primarily making the assertion that our estimate was not a complete enough estimate because of lack of experience of the estimator and the cost was more than expected as a result. I, Steven Rott, was aware of the situation in the progress of the job and also have re-examined it at that time. The bottom line is: 1) The additional flashing and wood work need could not have been known without taking apart the roof. It is often possible to reuse existing flashing if it is there or properly done. Step flashing was, and is, always under the shingles and siding and therefore not a knowable item until in progress. 2) The woodwork needed also was below the surface and not knowable in its entirety. We did have some wood, the fascia and soffit and even rafter tails included up front, but it was much worse when exposed. We, of course, have a choice when we find these situation; to do what others often do, which is just slap it together in a substandard way, or stop and show our customers what we find and get their approval on additional work needed, ( as we have stated in the body of our contract). We are often accused of doing the wrong thing by taking this second position because nobody likes to pay more. The problem is, someone else did the substandard work, and we get blamed for finding it. What should we do? Change the way we do business? I have also reviewed the situation at the time of the job with the member. We believe the estimate was accurate and proper at the time, as was the decision to give the customer the option to do the additional work needed when we found it. We would rather be in the place of doing the right thing on a job than being found to be a short cutter to not offend or upset a customer.

Overall, they did a good job. The clean up from the removal of the old roof was very good and they were careful of my yard. There are some places where the nails are visible, which I was not expecting and they had promised to clean out the gutters and down spouts, which they did not do. They have been in business for about 100 years and their prices are very fair. I am, as I said, pleased with the overall results.

This is absolutely a company I would highly recommend to others. They really did a very nice job for me. We have a split level house too so we did not give them an overly easy job. I think we got a fair price though and they did a very good job replacing damaged things on our roof from weather in this area. I was pretty impressed with them overall.

Hired another company to do this job.
Description of Work: Asked for an estimate to put on a new flat roof plus cedar shingle siding on mansard roof. Representative was punctual in coming to see home & measure, explained the type of roofing material they would use, showed us 3 types of siding material (roof shingles, vinyl & cedar shake). Only gave us a rough estimate, did not leave, or send us a written detailed estimate of the work. A few days later, representative called to say there was a mistake. The pricing for the cedar shingles was incorrect, & he was waiting to hear from their supplier. Over a week went by with no contact. I called back and a few days later the call was returned. Representative was apologetic, but did admit he had forgotten he was waiting to get pricing from his supplier. At this point the price was nearly doubled. The price for the raw material alone (cedar shingles)exceeded the previous basic quote for the entire job. We said we had a second quote that was much lower, but were told they couldn't meet that price.

We were contacted once by the company on 5/31 saying they would do the job the next day. We told them fine but they wouldn't get paid until after 6/15, to which we were told fine we will wait. Never heard from then again so we started calling weekly around the 7/17. Every week we were told next Mon or Tues. No one would show up so we would call again, told Thurs or Fri. Again no would show up. On 8/3 we were told Monday for sure. When no one showed up we called again and was told they were a day behind it would be Tues for sure. 8/8 we called at 8:30 am and were told someone was on their way. No shows. I called again and was told tomorrow for sure. I kept asking if we got anything off for them not keeping their end of the contract- nothing! When job was finally over, we had a 2" gash in our siding, gutters not put up properly, and our custom-made screen doors were dented, screens torn, and track cracked. Still waiting to hear what, if anything, they will do about all the damage!
Description of Work: We had a new garage roof put on, which included removing the two old set shingles. The contract we signed showed start and finish dates of 6/15-7/28. The work was done 8/9/06.
