Description of Work: Robert is a talented technician. He repaired, refinished, and reupholstered a family heirloom. I was so pleased with his work that I am taking two pieces to him for the same service. I have used other people in the area. They pale in comparison!

Description of Work: Robert offered consultation and estimates on fabric and cushions to re-upholster a pair of 1940 chairs. He was very amiable (and patient) and provided knowledgeable advice. Based on pictures of the original chairs in a 1939-1940 catalog, he customized the cut of the cushions and perfectly tailored the fabric. They are perfect, and we are so pleased! He also fixed a rocking chair we had - it looks great. So nice to work with someone personally and be able to enjoy our furniture again! Thanks, Angie's List! We couldn't have found him with you!

I rated the cost as N/A because we did not shop around; I chose this vendor because he was highly rated on Angie's List, but do not know how his bid and final costs compare to others. We had 6 wooden dining room chairs which were my grandmother's (so at least 60 years old, as she died at 90ish); wooden backs, seats worn through and what appeared to be kapok stuffing falling out here and there. Not particularly good quality chairs I don't think, but of sentimental value to me. We also had another, nonmatching wooden chair which I wanted reupholstered in a matching fabric. All had dings and scratches and occasional loose joints, and we had put sticky felt on the bottoms of the legs to avoid scratching our dining room floor. I telephoned to ask if he could do the job, phone was answered promptly and pleasantly by Mr. Hayden himself, appt made for us to bring chairs to him the following day (a Saturday in early June 2013). I did not have upholstery cloth picked out, he said fine to get it elsewhere (he could tell us how much needed after seeing chairs) or he had some we could look at. Address he wanted chairs brought to was different from that listed as Havenhouse Upholstery on Google (it appears on Google as Havenhouse all one word); appeared to be his home when we got there. He had a furniture-filled workshop in his back garage which is where we dropped off the chairs; he had about a dozen different rolls of upholstery cloth of different patterns/fabrics in the back of his minivan and we chose one we liked from that selection (I am perfectly happy with what we chose, but do not consider myself a picky shopper in matters of style -- durability and stain resistance more important as we have kids, and he recommended some of what he brought as more durable than other fabrics, we chose from those). Estimate was $575 for reseating/upholstery/stain guarding and $200 for repairs to chairs (he said refinishing was not recommended for chairs like these, and that was not our focus anyway), paid by check $250 deposit. He said it would take several weeks. Late June I called to check and let him know we would be unreachable for a week, he said he was almost done. As arranged he called me after we returned to arrange pickup, appt made for next day. He stated repairs had been more extensive than estimated and would be an extra $75 (I made no quibbles). Place to pick up was another different address. I had to call to confirm address twice (trouble entering into GPS) but each time Mr. Hayden answered right away himself and was immediately helpful. and quot;Haven House Upholsteryand quot; or similar not seen on signage of building at that address when I arrived so I phoned; he drove to where I was (took 1 minute) and led me back to a storage unit containing a workspace and lots of furniture including our chairs. He helped me load up and I paid remainder by check to him personally, receiving receipt with both Haven House Upholstery and his name at the top which lays out work done nicely but does not include tax line (I have to assume sales tax was included in the price). Quality of the work: seats look great, very comfortable to sit on with good firm/soft balance for both me (short and fat) and husband (tall and thin), fabric fits tightly and is beautifully folded over corners and evenly trimmed underneath, a lot better than the original seats even before they wore through. The fabric we chose had a herringbone pattern which would show minor faults in alignment easily and this was perfectly aligned on each chair. Wood had greatly diminished ding/scratch appearance, still present (as expected) but have to look a lot harder to find them. Joints very stable now, no leaked glue visible (if he used glue; I didn't ask how he made repairs). Unasked, he had replaced the sticky felt pads under each chairleg with the same color and thickness we had used. Overall, I am very pleased with the work quality. Timing and what would and could not be done was all accurately explained in words I could understand. Cost was a bit more than original estimate but I believe the chairs deserved this as he hadn't tested the joints a lot before making his estimate, and this is not a visible problem. I had expected more of a storefront experience given the name and quot;Havenhouse Upholsteryand quot; but reaching and dealing with Mr. Hayden was easy at all times. My only concern is the lack of evidence of having paid sales tax on the receipt, which I did not notice until I got home. I would use him again if needed; he seems to be a real craftsman who cares about quality and that is well worth putting up with a slightly less-than-slick business demeanor.

I had my grandmother's chair reupholstered about 10 years ago and hardly ever sat in it because it was as stiff as a board. In fact, I thought the upholsterer had put a board in the seat. I lived with it for 10 years and then decided it was a waste of a perfectly good chair. I checked Angie's List and found that Havenhouse was highly rated so I called. Robert came and I explained the issues with the chair. He saw what I meant about comfort and said he could fix it. His work is first class. He is not cheap, but I recommend that you use him if you have high quality furniture that is worth the expense. He will tell you that, too. It took 2 months to get my chair back (in fairness, the holidays interrupted), but it was worth the wait. He redid the seat and back, and the chair is now very comfortable -- just the way it was when my grandmother had it. Robert is a perfectionist -- he even matched the pattern so the buttons in the back match. i would definitely use him again.

Picked up furniture on time. Completed in a very timely manner.
Description of Work: Robert Hayden did a beautiful job on our cushions for our screened in front porch. He took the old ones for measurement and they turned out great. He also reupholstered two chairs for our dinette area. Fairly priced. Very knowledgeable about fabrics. Turn around time is good. Robert also helped me clean on of the cushions that got dirty and recommended cleaning solution for future use. If you would like to see pictures, please e-mail me at deborahhalter@yahoo.com.

We were going to do this project ourselves. My husband cut new seat bottoms. I bought fabric and foam. We watched a few you-tube videos. Piece of cake, right? Not so very much if you are starting from scratch like this and if one of you is a perfectionist. We managed to do one cover (not too bad, actually) but it took us an entire afternoon--and how would we ever get them to all look exactly the same. Lesson learned: call a professional. Gave Robert a call. He responded quickly and I dropped our materials off to his Scotia shop. Three days later--got a call that the seats were ready, beautifully finished. Next time, we'll go straight to the professional. Robert was very nice to work with.

Richard Hayden did a wonderful job upholstering a chair and cushions on a very old Morris chair. He also custom made pillow covers with left-over material. He completed the job sooner than estimated. He is very knowledgeable about materials, patterns, and styles. His workmanship is impeccable and very professional. I would definitely recommend his work and will hire him again in the future.

I called Mr Hayden about a couch (less than 4 yrs old) with saggy cushions..apparently a common problem. We arranged for Mr Hayden to come to our home on Saturday, he arrived promptly at the appointed time. He assessed the situation, and gave me a written estimate. He explained to us that some furniture manufacturers are using foam in the cushions that is not good quality in order to save money and it does not last. He assured me that he could replace the foam in the cushions with high quality foam that would last. He took the cushions with him (offered to leave them and come back with the foam and do the job here but seemed like it would be easier for him if he just took them). He called on Tuesday (!). The cushions were done and he set up an appointment to come on that day to return them--arrived on time. He also brought additional poly fill to add to the fixed cushion on the back of the couch to reinforce as we had agreed. He left me with additional fill for the future if we needed it. I now have a couch that looks as it should and is much more comfortable than it was! He was knowledgeable and professional and we were very pleased. I highly recommend Havenhouse Upholstery.

His work is superb. He brings furniture back to you in better shape than it had been when they were new. Everything about it is just good. He had other work upholstered and he had things that had been left as pieces of material. He gives back furniture better than when you gave it and when it was new. He knows a lot about it. The prices are great. The turnaround time is completely reasonable. We had a pair of couches that were done by him and turned around as love seats, they were big heavy ones and we only wanted them to go one at a time. Both of them are back in place like in four and half weeks. So that was fantastic.
