About us

I have many references from satisfied customers over 20 years now--as my reviews indicate. I generally handle one project at a time--as a rule-- and I give my full attention to each project. I am available to help with all aspects of the project from concept to finish. I am also architecturally qualified to assist in the design concepts. I personally do most of the detail work and finish work myself and am qualified as a master-carpenter. I'm probably one of the few "working contractors" still around. My rates are very reasonable and I can usually work within a customer's budget. 2015, 2016, 2017 AND 2021 Super Service Award Winner in Dutchess County , Remodeling - Kitchens & Bathrooms are my specialty.

Description of Work: Put on a trex deck on for us. Did a very professional job. Workmanship was excellent. We had a small time frame and John got the job done like he promised, so my wife could have a Father's Day party. Would highly recommend.

This was another fine working experience. As redundant as it may sound by now; these people had full trust in me from the start, and they got exactly what they wanted. Every job to me is a COLLABORATION between the home owner and the contractor. Yes, every project has it's ups and downs, but when the the home owner and the contractor can work things out between them in a mutually agreeable way, then the end result is always satisfactory. I always say: "there are no problems, there are only solutions...."

With all due respect to this customer; I'm not sure why this review is incomplete, however... we did a fine job of finishing his bathroom and he personally gave us an A+ rating for our effort. We actually finished the bathroom that another "unqualified" contractor had started. As an Angie's list contractor, WE solved his problem !

John did a great job. From start to finish, he was very focused. He kept me appraised of everything that was going on, and consulted with me whenever a problem came up. I picked out many of the fixtures and tiles, but he was able to make good suggestions for things that I didn't know about, like what type of toilet and bathtub to get. He even noticed that I had a broken floorboard in the kitchen, and went ahead and replaced it - no charge. He's also fun to talk to. I would certainly hire him again.
Description of Work: Remodeling a bathroom. The original fixtures (sink, toilet, bath) were torn out and replaced. The floors and walls were taken out and re-tiled. A new ceiling fan was installed and vented. The old door frame was replaced with one that better matched the aesthetic of the house.

The member is one of those customers who understands that a quallified contractor needs the trust and respect of the home owner, in order to not only do the job, but to be of assistance in finding and using the RIGHT products to complete the project in a reliable and proper way. He is an A-plus customer!

We were very pleased with the high quality of John's work from beginning to completion of the renovation of our master bathroom. He is very professional and reliable in every aspect of his work. We are delighted with our newly renovated master bathroom! John prepared a clear and detailed contract which he drew up based on what we wanted in our new bathroom. This contract included the work to be done as well as the cost of each aspect of the project. We knew from the start exactly what we were paying for; we paid for the project in four installments. Our renovation was worth every penny we paid for it! John was easy to talk with and a good collaborator. We felt comfortable having him in our home. John had spoken with us about his extensive background and experience in interior design and building so we trusted his suggested choices regarding color for tiles, vanity, paint, etc.. He brought us samples of shower tile, floor tile and wall paint to choose from. This saved us a lot of time and we were not disappointed! It became clear to us that renovating our master bathroom wasn't just a job for John; it was a work of art. He's obviously proud of his work and rightly so! We're amazed at John's skill and expertise in so many crafts: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, tiling and painting. We really appreciated the way John worked; he was meticulous, efficient, hard-working and very neat. For example, he used our garage as a work area for cutting and sawing; at the end of the project he cleaned up so well that our garage has never been cleaner! Using the garage, as well as outdoors when weather permitted, kept the dust in the house to a minimum. John finished the renovation of our master bathroom in the estimated time and within budget. We couldn't be happier with the final results! We feel so fortunate to have found John Gasparro on Angie's List. We highly recommend John for any bathroom renovation you may be planning!
Description of Work: John Gasparro's work included: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, ceramic tiling and painting. Completely renovating our master bathroom included: 1. removing all fixtures from master bathroom( including toilet, shower, bathtub, vanity, floor tiles, large mirror, light fixtures, ceiling fan/lights) 2. removal of drop-down soffit over existing tub 3. re-routing existing plumbing to facilitate installation of new tiled shower with sliding glass doors 4. installing new shower fixtures and all bathroom fixtures and hardware 5. re-locating electrical outlets 6. building new closet with new shelves and door 7. installing ceramic floor tiles, ceramic shower tiles, new toilet, new vanity, new mirror 8. installing several new light fixtures and new ceiling light/exhaust fan 9. painting ceiling and bathroom walls, staining and installing appropriate wood trim

The members are the type of customer I am very grateful for. They were able to trust me and my abilities right from the start--and that is what makes a project go smoothly and successfully. When a customer gives me the credability and trust I have earned over the years; I am able to complete the project within the projected time frame and in a way that the customer is very satisfied. Remodeling and Renovating projects can be very complex and challenging, but what makes it all work is when the customer trusts the abilities and direction of the quallified and established contractor. In my case, being multi-talented within my profession is a great asset to me and my customers.

After some confusion between the various people involved with the foundation, we were finally ?out of the dirt? and could start building upwards, with wood. This was never a straight forward type of addition, because it had to match within limits, an existing structure that was built in the mid-1700s. As you can guess nothing was straight, plumb or level. But, John was able to put up our 2 story addition so that it looks like it?s been there all along. One thing that we really appreciated about John was his ability to work with us and come up with some great design ideas so that the addition wouldn?t look new. One example is the addition of rough cut hemlock beams, which were cut and trimmed so that it looks like an extension to our barn. He even included hand carved pegs, of course inserted unevenly, to match the barn. His attention to detail is amazingly good. This summer, July 2011, was one of the hottest on record. But, John worked through it all. At times I wanted him to stop, but he assured that he was taking breaks and cooling down quite often. In this heat he was able to put on the new roof and also repair our chimney which was in very bad need of help. I have done carpentry work, unprofessionally, so I understand how it all goes together. I can say, without hesitation, that the construction of this addition is top notch in every aspect. We are extremely satisfied with John?s work and plan to stay in touch with him on future projects.
Description of Work: We live in a converted barn and wanted to put a 14’ x 22’, 2 story addition onto the end of it. After unsuccessful attempts at contacting several people for estimates, we finally remembered Angie’s List and decided to give it a try. Based on the reports there, we called John Gasparro. To our utter amazement he came over that day, which was a Thursday or Friday, and had our estimate on Monday. He again came over, presented the proposal and we signed the contract that day. I’m still wondering why other people aren’t able to work like this. The downstairs would be a workshop for myself, while the upstairs would contain a new master bedroom. UPDATE: I had given John a B on price initially. Unfortunately, this was done in error. I have changed this to an A on price. I feel that we got a lot of execllent work done for the price that John wanted. Sorry for any confusion on this matter.

As much as I respect the member's comments on my work, I must defend myself in regards to his giving me a "B" rating in regards to "punctuality." During the summer months that I personally worked on this project, it went on record as being the hotest summer on record for this area--with temperatures reaching beyond 100* most days. While most other construction sites in the area were shut down, I showed up every day to personally work and supervise---however, my arrival time did varry because of circumstances and the heat. Unfortunately, the member seems to have overlooked the circumstances. John Gasparro Jr.

John analyzed the situation, figured out a solution, and meticulously replaced a leaky mess with beautiful work that not only looked great but functioned perfectly. John is a member of a dying breed – a true craftsman who knows every aspect of construction and takes pride in his work. I would (and will) hire John again.
Description of Work: We hired John to correct faulty and poorly-conceived work done in a bathroom by another contractor and to repair damage to the ceiling below the bathroom. The job was quite tricky and required ripping out the faulty work and re-engineering a solution to the problem. The job also required mastery of many skills -- plumbing, carpentry, tiling, plastering, and painting.

This project for the members involved several different aspects of repair and remodeling. These type of minor repairs and renovations are generaly what I do when I am available between major home-improvement projects. I only handle "one" project at a time so that I can give my full attention to it--weather it is a minor project or a major project. [John Gasparro Jr.]

John Gasparro performed a complete turnkey renovation of our 20-year old main bathroom, which was undersized and outdated. The bathroom renovation project lasted approximately four weeks. The new bathroom is much more functional, airy and up to date. John is an honest renovation specialist; we trusted him to work in our home unattended and never had a worry or concern for our personal belongings. He treated our home like it was his personal property. We would hire John again for other projects in our home.
Description of Work: Our main bathroom renovation included a complete removal and replacement of all walls, flooring and fixtures (tub, toilet, sink, etc.). The new bathroom was enlarged with a new layout/design, going from a one-sink vanity to a two-sink vanity with the new toilet being placed in a better location. John performed all necessary plumbing, electrical, tile and assorted carpentry work. John also installed a 14-inch dia. skylight tube (interior bathroom) and moved CAC supply line to wall interior (for family room).

This customer was very apprehensive in hiring a contractor to do their projects because of many bad experiences in the past. Because of [Angie's list], they were able to contact me. They went to Angei's list in desperation--as they put it--because they felt they could trust the companie's trusted reputation in listing quallified contractors. After all was said and done; they were very satisfied, and expressed their gratitude by giving me a very large bonus check on completion of all the work.

John is meticulous about the quality of his work; he is expert at designing an area for functionality and appearance, and is precise with his estimated timing to complete the project. John is obviously in his element when performing this type of work. He is a true master carpenter with a very special talent. This was the second project that John completed for us and we are extremely pleased with his work and very reasonable price. At this point, he's "reinventing" the master bathroom for us - and we have complete faith that the job will be nothing less than first class. John is a diamond in the rough - we're very thankful to have him handing our projects.
Description of Work: John designed and built custom cabinetry in our master bedroom, which consisted of an elevated platform installed above the baseboard heating system in order to support five (5) floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets (with rods and shelving), a three-drawer, a six-drawer dresser, and a slide-out laundry hamper. All cabinetry was cabinet-grade birch wood. The cabinet tops for the two dressers and hamper were finished with granite (Madura Gold). The exterior of the cabinets, dressers and hamper was painted an off-white to minimize the visual impact on the room (I will paint the walls with a neutral beige color to contrast the cabinets). The floor-to-ceiling cabinets were finished off with a 3-inch crown moulding. The finished project resulted in a dramatic 'sweep' from the outer corner of the southern facing wall to the outer corner of the western facing wall, adding up to approximately 25 feet of linear cabinet space. The original 6-foot wide closet (with bi-fold doors) was eliminated to allow for a larger master bathroom on the opposite side (which John is completing at this time). The total project time was 2.5 weeks and was built from the 'ground up' on site in my garage. That's right: all work was completed in my garage.

The project included structural renovation to two walls (1 removed and 1 widened); complete removal of the old kitchen (cabinets, backsplash, tile, plumbing, baseboard heating, electrical, etc.); hardwood floor removal; rewiring for appliance relocations and additions; new recessed lights; new plumbing; new electrical; new tile (backsplash and floor); new countertops; new appliances installed. You name it - done. ALL WORK WAS PERFORMED BY JOHN ALONE, except for times when a helper was required for heavy lifting and contracted granite installation. You would need to see his talent in action in order to truly appreciate the effort, detail and care that John put into the project. Anyone who just sees the finished product could never appreciate all of the rework that went into/behind the walls and floor to make this project work the way it did. John is driven by quality. We are extremely pleased with the quality and professionalism that John Gasparro provided us. He is a true Renovation Specialist that knows his business inside and out, and he's one of the few out there that's still willing to give you a fair price for a project. We already have John lined up for several other renovation projects, so that tells you how pleased we are with John's commitment to project quality and timeliness at a fair price.

This most recent project involved many aspects of remodeling and renovation. Since I am quallified in many areas of home remodeling and repairs; I performed most of the work myself. Being experienced and quallified in these areas, makes the time involved in completing a project much shorter than most contractors who sub-contract most of the ancillary work. And, the customer realy appreciats the idea of having [one] man working and present on their premisis and in their house--especially during these days of contractor-incompetence. Gaining the confidence and trust of a customer usualy takes place during the initial stages of the estimate and planing stages of a project. My confidence and trust in my abilities and character are usually detected by the customers I encounter--and have been for a number of years now.

John is competent, honest, reasonable and reliable. I have been completely satisfied with everything he has done; his work is very high quality with extreme attention to detail, he uses the best materials, his job site is neat, he does what he says and he does it on time and on budget. I will hire John for my next project.
Description of Work: There were 2 major projects performed in this garage conversion report. The first was reinforcement of the garage floor; the second was the garage remodeling to living space. Preface: I have built 2 houses in my life and all my prior experiences with contractors have ranged from bad to very bad. For this reason I was very reluctant to do any major renovations. I can tell you that John has changed my perception for the better. Before any work could begin on converting the garage to living space, the garage floor had to be reinforced. My garage is 24x25 and has a full foundation underneath it. The floor is a 6" reinforced concrete slab sitting on 2 steel I-beams supported by 2 lolly columns. The floor was cracking where the slab rests on the I-beams to the point where I was afraid to park the car there. John stabilized the slab by adding a cross lattice of 6 I-beams supported by 4 new lolly columns. He performed all this work from design to completion in less than a week. I was so impressed with his work and confident that the floor is now stable enough to park the car, that I changed the project to leave a 1 bay garage and only convert half the garage to living space. John is flexible and accommodated my changes. He even came up with new plans incorporating the project changes. Again John did all the work from design plans to completion; he worked with the building inspector and managed all subcontractors.

It was a pleasure doing this work for him and it's always a pleasure to have such understanding and trusting customers. Getting the trust of a customer is a primary concern to me because I want the customer to have confidence in my abilities so that the project runs smoothly with good communications between the home owner and me. Since this minor project for him; he has hired me to do a major addition to his home which involved some major structural support of the house foundation. With this project completed, they are very happy with the work and have stated that I am the best contractor they have ever used. This compliment speaks volumes--as the saying goes. I look forward to continuing my work with other Angie's List customers. Sincerely......John Gasparro [remodeling specialist]
