About us

I have many references from satisfied customers over 20 years now--as my reviews indicate. I generally handle one project at a time--as a rule-- and I give my full attention to each project. I am available to help with all aspects of the project from concept to finish. I am also architecturally qualified to assist in the design concepts. I personally do most of the detail work and finish work myself and am qualified as a master-carpenter. I'm probably one of the few "working contractors" still around. My rates are very reasonable and I can usually work within a customer's budget. 2015, 2016, 2017 AND 2021 Super Service Award Winner in Dutchess County , Remodeling - Kitchens & Bathrooms are my specialty.

12 years ago I used a general contractor to remodel my bathroom, and have had nothing but issues from cracked grout to leaks inside the walls and rotting supports. John came in this year, inspected the site, understood that this was our only bathroom and worked with us to expedite our renovation. He is extremely focused on problem resolution, patiently explaining each issue he uncovered, showing what was wrong and how to make it right, and keeping costs from spiraling out of control. Our new bathroom is fresh and modern, and more importantly leak free.

Because of all the bad work that was done to this bathroom previously, by another contractor, I had to depend on my years of experience in bathrooms to fix and replace most all of that work. It all turned out exceptionally well ! They now have a very functional and attractive bathroom.

John went above and beyond with our bathroom remodel. He was very knowledgeable about the condition of our home, and was very transparent and honest with his recommendations on what to do during the demolition and installs. John also has a great eye when it comes to design and decor! I was stumped when I had to choose tiles and a vanity. John was so kind to bring me multiple samples and even met me at the store to look at even more. He made sure we were completely happy with every choice. He completed the work in a timely manner and was an absolute joy to have around. I will be calling John back shortly for our other bathrooms and kitchen as well!

Once again, I am grateful for having such an understanding and patient home-owner. Remodeling can and usually does become a little inconvenient for the home-owner at times but all works out well, when we work together to accomplish the project. That was the case with this bathroom remodel in this old house.

Everything went well with this [ 2 bathroom remodel. ] One was a full remodel and the other was a partial remodel. This home-owner put trust in my experience and qualifications, and that trust made it possible for me to create the bathrooms they were expecting. It was a pleasure to work for this home-owner and his wife. They put their trust in my qualifications and experience and together we accomplished the bathroom project they looked forward to. It's always a major benefit in getting the bathroom done in a timely manor when a home-owner is able to make the decisions necessary along the way, to help move the project forward to completion.

John was always on time and worked hard. He has a lot of experience so we could trust him to do things well. We asked him to completely remodel our bathroom. This involved tearing out the old tile, installing a new shower, putting tile on the floor and the walls, etc. Everything came out great. It was a pleasure working with him.

We had our 38 year old bathroom remodeled with a washer/dryer unit placed in the linen closet as well as relocate the tub and the toilet. This job was by no means an easy project. We hired John to do the work and are very thankful we did. John is an all round contractor experienced in all aspects of renovation construction. John turned out to be true to his word and work. He's a contractor that is punctual, considerate and is a person with an eye for details. It was a challenging job to say least and John tackled it with thought for our situation, his expert advise was spot on. The end result is wonderful.

Response from Home Improvements and Repairs by: John
First I must clarify the $25,000.00 Cost ! That cost was for BOTH a bathroom remodel, AND a full creation of a LAUNDRY room adjoining the bathroom. The bathroom was around $13,000.00 complete. And the laundry room build around $12,000.00 complete. Once again, by gaining the confidence of the home-owner; and them putting trust in my expertise; the end result was just what the home-owner had in mind. It helps a lot when the home-owner is capable of making decisions as the project moves along, in regards to unexpected circumstances that are almost always encountered when remodeling an existing structure. That was the case here with this complex project. "There IS no substitute for experience."

The home-owner had most of the fixtures on hand prior to the bathroom remodel and that helped a lot in getting the job done in a timely manor. It's very helpful when the home-owner knows just what fixtures they want prior to contracting the job. It's also helpful when the home-owner chooses fixtures and tile that are in stock locally or on line. The average time frame to completely remodel a master-bathroom is between two and three weeks.

John did a fantastic job remodeling our main bathroom. It was a full gut, replacing the original 1959 bathroom with a new shower, vanity, tile floor, etc. John did all the work, from the demo to the plumbing/electric to the drywall to the tiling. His attention to detail is terrific, and his finishing work is top notch. He offered great suggestions to us to solve any issues that arose and was very easy to work with. I would highly recommend John, and we’re already planning on having him do our other bathroom as well.

Once again; this bathroom remodel was a success in more ways than one, because of the trust the home-owner had in my qualifications and experience in bathroom remodeling. They relied on Angi's reviews to help them make the right decision in choosing the right contractor for the job. I recommend reading at least a few of those reviews, before hiring a contractor--especially in this diversified field of contracting today.

John remodeled both our upstairs and downstairs bathroom. He ripped out a cracked plastic tub that, it turned out, was sitting on a very heavy steel tub, which he had to cut into pieces to remove, and he removed the plastic sheeting going around our shower walls (which revealed tiles that had to be removed as well). He put in beautiful new tiles on our shower wall, installed new tiles on the bathroom floor, and a new vanity and toilet. Downstairs, he put down stick-on vinyl tiles and a new toilet as well as new baseboards, transforming that half bathroom. HIs work was meticulous every step of the way. Others we spoke to did not want to try to match the vintage wall tile; John was confident he could do it (making the job cheaper and less messy), and he was right! His choices were perfect and the bathrooms are both transformed.

I think A+ should be an available review grade as John definitely deserves an A+! The very day we called for an estimate he came by and within two hours he called with a detailed estimate, including an estimate for job completion. He could give that job completion estimate as John does all his own work, including plumbing and drywall. We were pleased with his promptness. John’s work is exceptional. He pays attention to every single detail and the result is flawless. He explains what he has to do and goes about doing his work. He made suggestions, which we accepted, such as platinum grout rather than white, and the finished bathroom looks much better than I imagined. The details with the installation of the new new soaker tub and surround required a bit of change to one of the surrounding walls which required modifying the wall structure by adding the necessary wood bracing to accept the shower surround. This allowed the new tub and shower surround to be installed flawlessly to fit the alcove opening. His floor tile installation included cement board underlayment and thinset application to accept our new plank ceramic tile. After grounding the tile, it was obvious why he suggested platinum grout, and that too was done meticulously. John set the toilet bowl once the new tile was set and his job was completed on time. We were VERY LUCKY to have found John. A pleasure to work with and you can tell just how much pride he takes in his work. My husband and I highly recommend John. If you want excellent results for your home project do give John a call!

This was a complete master-bathroom remodel, which included the removal of a double whirlpool tub and a misplaced corner closet. Replacing less-used tubs, and installing walk-in shower units, seems to be very common nowadays--especially among the growing population of senior citizens! Also, the new "comfort-height" toilets and vanities are more practical and functional. The acrylic shower surrounds have improved greatly and are a much less expensive install than ceramic tile--for those with a tight budget.

In 2018, John Gasparro did a complete renovation of my master bathroom. Because he did such an excellent job, he was the only choice to work on my other bathroom. John is an expert at carpentry, plumbing, and tile work, all necessary skills when remodeling a bathroom. Because of his skills, the project was completed with no interruptions while waiting for a carpenter, plumber, tile expert, etc. In addition, John is focused on detail. His tile work is beautiful. Where old tile was removed and no exact match could be found he suggested a contrasting color and design, which when finished added to the beauty of the room. John is collaborative . Several times during the project we freely discussed solutions to various problems. Sometimes we used his ideas, sometimes mine, and often incorporated both ideas into a workable solution. It was a pleasure working with him. I am very pleased with my “new” bathroom and highly recommend John Gasparro.

I needed a complete kitchen remodel. This included cabinets, flooring ,removal of a window and door (replaced by a sliding glass door) appliances and removal of half the wall between the kitchen and dining room. John responded quickly and came to look at the job. A contract was signed and he started the next week. John is an exceptional worker and pays attention to detail. He is extremely neat and, when finished for the day, restores everything to a usable condition whenever possible. John even want so far as to install a temporary sink until mine could be used. That may not sound like a great deal but try washing pots and pans in a bathroom sink! After installing the sliding door to the deck, he replaced all the shingles and even some that were previously damaged. I am more than pleased with the end result, which, by the way, was completed in one month. I would highly recommend John and would surely call him for any future projects.

John was excellent to deal with. He is pleasant and professional. His work is meticulous and he completed the project as expected. He was diligent is keeping the area clean and neat. Each day he left with everything cleaned up and as functional as possible. He took out a cast iron bath tub, removed plaster walls and tile quickly and with little impact upon the rest of the house. He installed a walk in shower with glass doors that has completely changed our bathroom. I highly recommend John for any projects. We couldn't be more pleased with our newly remodeled bathroom. From the initial meeting to the finished project, things could not have gone more smoothly. Mr. Gasparro provided us with a detailed estimate/project. He took time to explain what he thought should be done and how long it would take. Especially helpful were the tile samples he brought based on the color scheme of our home, narrowing the choice from thousands of options to a few. He was also able to find a shower doors at the height we required. John and his helper were very aware that they were working in our home. Drop cloths always! Everything vacuumed at the end of the day. To keep our inconvenience at a minimum, he even replaced the original sinks so we could continue to use them until the new counters and sinks were installed. As in any remodel, unexpected issues arose. Because of John's expertise in plumbing and electric,as well as general construction, tile work, and painting, the problems were solved and we didn't have to wait for an outside contractor. The entire project was completed in two and 1/2 weeks as promised. We now have a beautifully tiled walk in shower, quartz counter tops, freshly painted walls and ceiling perfectly married to the existing mirrored vanity area. John will be doing more work for us in the future. All in all, a wonderful job from a very talented contractor

Once again, this bathroom project was a great success, due in part because of the patience and understanding of the home owners. Any remodeling, in an occupied home, does create a certain amount of inconvenience, and when the home owners give their assistance to make the experience more pleasant; the whole project is a positive one from start to finish. Also, the home owner's "hospitality" creates a more conducive atmosphere between them and the workers--which was the situation here !

When we decided to remodel our main bathroom we searched Angie's List to find a contractor. Based on the reviews for John Gasparro on his site, we called and made an appointment to meet with him. After spending some time with John, exchanging ideas, listening to his thoughts and proposals about the job etc, we knew that we had found our contractor. His price was fair and a contract was signed. We could not have made a better choice! Because John only works one job at a time he and his helper were on site every day Monday thru Friday 9-5 and sometimes later. John was involved in every aspect of the job.....plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, tile work etc. He explained things as he moved along so that we always knew what he was doing or about to do. His experience with construction and design was so valuable for us as he sometimes suggested changes or additions that we had never even thought of. John's work (and that of his helper) is first-rate and there was never any doubt that we would have a beautifully finished bathroom. One thing I need to mention is that John is one of the neatest workers we have ever had and his clean-up at the end of his day was so appreciated. Bottom line: we were so pleased with the results of the main bathroom that we also had John do additional changes to our half bath and laundry room! Overall, we couldn't be more pleased with John's designs and renovations to both of our bathrooms. Would I hire John again? Most definitely! Would I recommend him to others? Most definitely!

Needed a bathroom remodeled. It was leaking downstairs into the living room. He was able to fix the leak and repair the water damage. We took the standing shower out and replaced it with a jack and jill vanity. A wall was removed. Lighting and electrical was redone. Plumbing was redone. Flooring was redone. There was an issue with two flooring tiles and they had to be redone again. He fixed it with no issues. Only criticism would be to use leveling compound to help resolve the issues with the tiles and to help level the vanity. It has to be shimmed up on one side to be level. I did not know about it until after the work was done. He put up drywall where it was needed. Removed the mold and replaced/repaired my living room ceiling. After the remodel everything looks great. It was him and his partner. They came every day for a week and a half. They had to come on an extra day to repair the tiles. Some days he came later than anticipated but he would call and let us know he was on his way or where he was. Price was reasonable.

We are very grateful to have such understanding and hospitable customers as this one was to us. They made each day a pleasurable experience. By way of an explanation, I would like express my thoughts on the two "B" marks: The settling of floors in structures is very common, especially in older homes. Re-leveling of whole floor areas for the sake of 1/4 inch or so, isn't always feasible or merit the additional cost to the homeowner-- and in most cases un-noticeable overall. The "punctuality" issue, in regards to contractors showing up at a specific time everyday on the clock--especially a working contractor like myself--is most misunderstood by homeowners. Every new day requires materials and supplies pick up at supply houses as the work progresses on a day to day basis. This is especially true to the nature of REMODELING work as opposed to new construction.

We loved John's work so much we hired him a second time. First time was our master bathroom, this time our kitchen. Both jobs were complete overhauls, and both went beautifully well. John worked with us to design a kitchen layout that would incorporate all the features we wanted. He went over the pros and cons of different choices for flooring. After the layout was made he designed how the ceiling lights would work to provide proper illumination over each part. His eye towards design was incredibly helpful. We had a lot of trouble finding colors that would go well together, and John was an absolute expert at finding the right choice to fit in with what was already picked out. Especially, when we had trouble at the very end coming up with the right tiles for the backsplash, he took one look at the samples we were waffling over and instantly knew. The result, when it was all over, was perfect. John is absolutely one of the best in the business and if you're looking to do a kitchen, he should be the first person you call. With his work, things are simply done right. Any issues that come up are dealt with thoughtfully, thoroughly, and professionally. If we have another project, he's going to be the person we call.

John responded quickly to my inquiry and our appointment with him was the following day. He asked what my ideas were and then shared pros and cons to some of my plans. Of course with his vast number of years of experience, he knows what works and what does not, especially when it comes to a budget. We immediately were impressed with John and hired him that day. I read all his reviews and was confidant that John was the guy to hire. We did not interview any other contractor. John started our project immediately. It is true that he only works on one job at a time. He called me every morning to let me know when he would be arriving and what his tasks would be each day. John takes great pride in his work and truly loves what he does. Perfection is just one of his many attributes. His common sense approach assisted me to make decisions. I called him my guardian angel as he discovered several problems we were not aware of, which needed immediate attention. Some days John stayed later just to finish a specific aspect of the project. He does not rush and is meticulous. There were times I would need to run errands and I trusted John to remain in my home. At the end of his day, he showed me what he accomplished and pointed out problem areas he rectified masterfully. Prior to leaving, he cleaned the area, put away his tools, and carried away any refuse. Our shower is gorgeous and safe. We have now hired John to remodel our 1986 kitchen and know there are issues that he just happened to notice!
Description of Work: Replace bathroom tub for a walk in shower: remove tile, install moisture board, install subway tile and band of decorative glass tile, install plumbing for new shower head and hand held shower wand, install grab bar, relocate fan/light, install new light/fan switches, replace toilet, install sliding glass shower doors (these are very cool that John selected... Looks similar to barn door), paint bathroom

This customer had researched hiring other contractors in the area, however they decided to TRUST in the REVIEWS of established and qualified contractors on Angie's list. They made a wise decision based on the unbiased reviews from previous home owners who have hired us. Those reviews speak volumes of any contractor who is rated on Angie's list. What could be a better recommendation to TRUST, than the many other "unrelated" home owner reviews, who have already hired an Angie's list contractor ? John Gasparro

We hired John to remodel our 1986 kitchen after he did a fabulous job with our shower make over (the previous review). And our kitchen is absolutely beautiful. Our project entailed 4 phases: 1). I wanted an open floor design into the living room but wanted to keep a portion of the wall. John opened the doorway to 7 ft., having to move the thermostat and light switches to the opposite wall. The carpentry is pristine. 2). New flooring. Removed wood floor and stone tile. We talked at length about what type of floor, with no real decision. Then John arrived with several selections of tiles. The choice was easy....we immediately decided on an 18 x 18 porcelain gray tile. Once again John understood our delemma, listened to what I did not want, and with his design experience and time in getting to know us, he narrowed the choices. When he began to lay the tile, he realized there were 5 patterns. He felt he could not just open the box and haphazardly put the tiles down. He labored over how the tiles would compliment one another and have a flow to them. It was a work in progress. The floor is stunning! 3). The plan was to remove the soffit and have the cabinets go to the ceiling. John cut out small holes in different areas of the soffit to investigate if there was anything in there....and to his horror the plumbing for the upstairs bathroom was hidden in it! So there goes my 36" cabinets. But John assured me that while I had to go with 30" cabinets, I did not have to keep that ugly 10" soffit. He was able to redesign the soffit to 4". He added crown molding to further reduce the look which also added character. But the ceiling, which was less than 8', was not level. Amazingly he managed to hide this flaw. Also he warned me the recessed light over the sink may be 1/2" off center because of the plumbing. Well that did not happen! He got that light in dead center with a lot of maneuvering. 4). Removal of those ugly cabinets, island and Formica counter. Install new cabinets, appliances, subway tile backsplash and lighting. With John's new design the kitchen is more spacious, functionable, and I now have a pantry, which I never thought I would have the space for. At our initial meeting, John brought several different cabinet door styles and stains to alleviate the overwhelming selections in Creative Kitchens. I thought for sure I would have shaker style white cabinets and granite countertops. After all I have been planning for this day for 10 years! Well to my surprise, we chose one of the styles of cabinet doors that John brought to us. Then we arranged a visit to Creative Kitchens with John to finalize selections. My white kitchen and granite countertop vanished as I absolutely loved a cherry cabinet kitchen display and a beautiful quartz that looks like marble. John took the time to be at the display center as I think he truly is vested in his projects. In the design, he moved the island just a few inches to ensure we can move the refrigerator out if we have to. With his experience, he knows that appliances can get "locked" in spaces due to poor planning of where the island is. Plus we gained another foot on the island! We had a gas stove top in the island which no longer was in the design. John removed that and disconnected the gas line. The over the range microwave needed to be vented outside. The light on the deck was exactly where the vent needed to be installed. John was not leaving until he resolved that issue. We had extra siding and he moved the light and replaced the siding. Then he spray painted the vent the same color as the siding to blend in. Who would have thought to do that? It is his attention to detail that is just another one of his many attributes. Backsplash: I chose classic plain white subway tile. When it was time to install them, John also brought a few green glass tiles to install "here and there". He thinks of his projects and offers suggestions. Love it! Our kitchen is absolutely beautiful. I thank John for his "makes sense" design, his expertise, his true craftsmanship. He takes great pride in his work, is meticulous, a very hard worker, and is a master at detail. He is respectful and a true professional. He does it all.....electric, plumbing, gas lines, carpentry. We had a separate contract for each phase and despite issues that arose, our cost did not change.
Description of Work: Kitchen gut and remodel. Opened doorway to create a more open floor plan. Redesign soffit. Remove flooring and install porcelain tiles. Install new gas stove and over the range microwave and dishwasher. Add recessed lighting. Move thermostat and light switches. Install crown molding throughout kitchen and paint.

The expression: "There's no substitute for 'experience'" is very true when it comes to remodeling work in a home. Re-modeling work in a house can be likened to a plastic surgeon's work on a body. Making changes to an existing structure, and having it all look like it belongs to the original body or space, is the desired result in both professions. That has been my goal for the years that I have been in the remodeling business. My customer REVIEWS speak volumes of my work--with all due respect to modesty. ----John Gasparro

John Gasparro was professional and friendly during his estimate and remodeling services. He contacted us quickly when we called or when he had questions about details of his service. He was reliable and prompt. If he needed to change his appointment time he contacted us as soon as possible. John left the work area clean and neat each day. He had tasteful suggestions on what items would fit well in our bathroom. John's work enhanced the look of our home, while staying within our budget.

This was a relatively minor repair project, however I do appreciate these small projects once in a while. It's a welcome break from the major remodeling projects that we do so often. There seems to be some contradiction on the "punctuality B" because in her main comment above; she commends me for being "prompt." Possibly a typo error.

John completed the remodel on our very large (150 sq. ft.) bathroom and it looks amazing! He took a space that was broken up and non-functional and transformed it into a luxurious bathroom. He is very meticulous in his work and ensured that with each step of the project, he communicated the plan and schedule. John provided us a written quote and the price did not change except for changes that we requested in the project. Additionally, we liked that John only works on one job at a time, giving our project his full attention. John removed two walls in our bathroom and then reconfigured all the plumbing to give us a large shower area (5' x 6') with a bench, a free-standing tub, relocated the toilet, and built two half walls around the toilet. He also added new sinks and countertops to our existing vanity and painted the vanity. John took extra time to ensure the patterns of the wall and floor tiles were laid to provide the most esthetic look possible. During the construction, he took time every day to ensure the work area was cleaned up before he left for the day. John's work is meticulous and high quality. He truly works to ensure his work is completed to the customer's satisfaction.

These projects for the [Member Name Removed] family all went well for the very reason I have mentioned in previous reviews: TRUST. Trust in the proven credentials of a contractor with a long history of positive results by many satisfied customers. The REVIEWS speak volumes for any contractor on Angie's list. The many customers who have not only trusted the detailed reviews, by unrelated home owners, and then put that trust and confidence in the specific contractor reviewed; they have benefited from making a wise decision based on proven results. " 'Cost' should not always be the deciding factor in choosing the right contractor."

We actually renovated the whole two-story home for the [Member Name Removed] family. And, the $40,000.00 figure the Mr. [Member Name Removed] listed here as the Cost, is just a little bit more than what the kitchen cost. The detailed REVIEWS (3) they gave us are noted here in the reviews for 2016 and they are below on PAGE (2).. They are some of the most detailed reviews we have ever gotten in 10 years on Angie's list !
