Plumber arrived promptly at appointed time, and gave an estimate for kitchen drain work at $1200, figuring 5 hours of work. This seemed very high, but we were in a jam and needed the work done quickly so we agreed. He scheduled to come back the following week. One week later, he called in sick, and another plumber was sent. This guy looked over the job and decided he couldn't do it himself, and said he'd be back the next day. He came back with a helper, and fixed the drain. He then looked at the toilet and as the fixture had been installed before the floor tile, we were concerned about damage to the floor when removing the old fixture. He said he'd be careful, but when we heard banging and went to investigate, we found him pushing against our brand new tub and kicking the toilet. When we reminded him that he needed to be careful and we didn't want the tub damaged either, he said "Do you want it done, or not? and "If the tub gets damaged from this, it must be a crappy tub.". Of course we needed it done, and of course he did damage the floor (fortunately not the tub). So much for being careful... After finding the object lodged in the toilet, he announced that it couldn't be removed (we wonder about that), and said we needed a new fixture. He later returned with the wrong sized toilet and had to come back a third time. The toilet and install came to $800. Eventually all work was completed, but while there, he had tried to pressure us to also replace a perfectly functioning water heater with a new one, simply because it would be out of warranty within a year. Why would we want to do that? He quoted us over $2 thousand for the installed water heater- also way too high-- and seemed very irritated that we would not agree to have the work done. It was after this conversation that the floor was damaged. We would not use this company again. We called them because we needed the work done quickly, and several other plumbers we called did not call us back right away. While the work was completed, and both our kitchen drain and new toilet work fine, we did not care for his attitude, the price, or his lack of care in completing the work.
Description of Work: Needed kitchen drain re-plumbed (prior plumbing work by previous owner not to code), and toilet clogged with a flushed bottle (also former owner's work). Toilet was eventually replaced.

Great! He arrived a bit early, but telephoned first to get the OK. After checking out the problems, He explained the job in detail and gave a written quote. I signed it and he did the job right then and there. His truck was parked around the corner and he went and got his snake machine and was very professional, tidy and quick in his work. He was a nice, presentable-looking man whom I did not hesitate to let into my house. By the way, his telephone gal is named Stephanie and she has a very charming voice and expeditious manner about her. He cleaned up after his work and let my kitchen in as good condition as it was to begin with.
Description of Work: On the phone, I scheduled a Free Quote for my backed up kitchen sink and dishwasher. The Hub owner himself showed up and gave me an indepth explanation of the problem and quoted a fair price. I did not give the price an "A" rating because as we all know and hope, it could always be cheaper. So I rated the price as a "B". Anyway he explained that there was a possibility that my 12-year-old dishwasher could have a broken pump that prevented it from draining or as it was actually the case, ny sink could be clogged. It was and he snaked it clean for $195.. In addition he sold me an enzyme piowder to put down the drain every 2 weeks as maintence to prevent sludge buildup. That was a bit expensive $65, but in the long run is a good deal as it will prevent more expensive plumber visits in the future.

I think my previous description is detailed enough. It goes like this: 1.) Disbelief 2.) Must be the city's sewer line (their responsibility) 3.) Call the city who quickly and easily confirms their end is PERFECT (of course) 4.) Call a couple of "snake" firms (Roto Rooters, etc) 5.) The one you hire shows up, works like crazy for a couple of hours, shows you the "polished and dry" end of his "snake," and tells you "That means we're hitting dirt... your sewer line is collapsed. It's gonna' be expensive." 6.) You start freaking-out calling as many people as possible to save the day 7.) They start coming, and you start learning what's happening 8.) You make a decision based on careful examination of each quote to LEARN what obstacles might come-up, and which ones are or are not included in the quote from the firm toward whom you are leaning. 9.) You select the firm 10.) You sign the contract and pay 1/2 up-front (in my case, work did not begin for nearly 2 weeks because of weather, and "other situations" that I didn't understand 11.) A huge construction crew shows up and starts jack-hammering, banging, pounding, etc., etc., etc., for several hours 12) Holes get deeper and deeper. 13.) Fortification is put in place to prevent "cave-in" 14.) Inspectors show up to make sure everything is kosher and plan of action is correct 15.) More digging, fortification, etc. 16.) Troubled piping and/or traps are replaced 17.) Water line is replaced cause it is "lead" and is not PC in this day in age 18.) OH BIG THING: at the end of every work day YOU CAN STILL USE THE TOILET (major good feelings) 19.) Inspector returns to OBSERVE them laying and tightening the final pipe and trap installation 20.) Check-book to the ready; Balance Due Now, please 21.) More waiting as the holes are covered in a "temporary but professional make-shift mannter" 22.) After a looong weekend, crews return to do all concrete, cobblestone, and general excavation work required to finish the job. 23.) Start sprinkling down your really filthy sidewalks, and you're back to sanity
Description of Work: Mr. George very kindly came to our place, a big building in The West Village of Manhattan, to see what he could do to free our "blocked sewer" line. When he realized we'd already had a commercial "snake" in use for hours to no avail, he quickly advised that we probably had a collapsed sewer line. This type of work is the "grand daddy" of plumbing repairs, and is requiring of huge crews, city permits, street closing, etc. Mr. George is a "master plumber" who does has not elected to get into such massive projects. So, he recommended another firm, Harris Water Main & Sewer Contractors" out of Brooklyn, NY. The Harris firm showed up to give an estimate. (As a depressing fact when dealing with sewer matters, "Everybody remotely involved with pricing the job, began by saying "Whoa, this is going to be big money, you know," so that more or less "softens one up for what is to come." And COME IT DID!! I had quotes from $15.5K (Harris,) to $25.5K all the way to $35.5K. Every firm had to be licensed as Master Plumbers, have permits, insurance, etc. So, that was a given. The tricky part was sort of using "common sense" to figure out what could make one man's job $5K - $20K better than the others. In the end, Harris' quote had to be raised upward to $22.5K because as work progressed, there was a point at which it became obvious the "sewer line itself," while 125 years old, was not the main culprit. In fact, it was an 8" main sewer trap in the vault of our basement. So, that was an add-on of $7.5K. Bottom line, it was a distressing and disturbing situation psychologically, to see raw sewage flowing all over the sidewalk, etc. So, whatever a firm says at that point, one is apt to grab the "lifesaver." I did. Of course I hated the expenditure, but they did as they promised, with reasonably precise methods, with minimum disruption to inhabitants of the neighborhood, and in a cosmetically pleasing manner, too. (This is a landmark area of NYC, so things have to look right at the end of the day.) I hope none of you need to go through "it," but if you do, make sure this group of folks are amongst from whom you get quotes. They are like "bankers" about money, absolutely fastidious in expecting and receiving payment at pre-determined points throughout the job. In fact, the only "off-putting" thing about the financial end of it is that 1.) the customer pays 1/2 up front (never a comfortable thing); and 2.) the balance is due when "pipe is laid and connected," not when the job is finished. he result is that one is essentially paying for the job 3-5 days (or more) before it's concluded (unless inclement weather prevents the final excavating, paving, cobblestone, concrete work to be concluded. So, just be prepared for that aspect. They behaved ethically, honestly and professionally at all times. So, Mr. Peter George didn't do the work, but turned me on to a long time associate who did. Result: peace in the valley Oh I might add, that my roof sprung a horrible leak during the same time. Can you imagine; "getting it from the top and the bottom?" Good Luck!!!! Have the bank book open!!!

We found out about HUB as result of the gas company's "energy audit". The gas company told us about Hub. Hub representative came to house, assessed job to be done, did a "show & tell" in basement with detailed explanation, gave lots of information, and provided printed material that included brochures/forms. Rep answered numerous questions and explained about what to expect before and during the job (eg. required asbestos removal arranged by us, removal of oil tank arranged by Hub, 5 days total timeframe for job, 3 days timeframe without hot water, etc); then, wrote proposal. I informed that we needed time to make the decision and would be in touch. Hub representative spent about 2 hours total. While in the house, he wore "coverings" over his shoes/boots. Shortly thereafter, we made decision to commit to this job and called Hub to inform. A start date was given. We made half payment. (And, prior to starting job, we arranged and paid for a company to remove small amount of asbestos on pipes attached to basement ceiling) Hub coordinated with company that removed oil tank and began the job right on schedule. Hub provided space heaters that we used to maintain some heat in the house during the 5 days. Hub completed job on schedule. Note: When there was need to communicate before, during and after the job, there was no problem whatsoever. We either left messages at Hub's main telephone number, called a cell phone # and/or emailed - we either reached someone directly or got fast replies. Hub carefully cleaned up when job was completed. Note: a while after the oil to gas heat conversion was done, we ended up without heat and called Hub. Hub responded immediately on emergency basis, assessed, determined a small part needed to be replaced, ordered the part, and "reset" the system so we'd have heat. When small part arrived, Hub came in as soon as we notified and took care of doing the replacement.

Our toilet was not well-secured to the floor, despite being firmly bolted, and we had Hub come out to inspect the problem. We were told that it could be either the seal around the toilet or a broken flange. Our toilet drains through the floor, so either problem would eventually lead to leaking. Hub gave us a fixed price of $240 for the seal and approximated the price for the flange at between $500-600. Fortunately, the problem was the seal. As the Hub tech was moving the toilet it bumped the countertop and the tank cracked. Hub immediately replaced the entire toilet with a newer model after a quick trip to the warehouse. We didn't have to wait or schedule a new appointment. Many companies would try to repair the tank and say that it's fine, but Hub was completely professional about it. Hub is always more expensive than other, smaller plumbing operations, and their fixed pricing for jobs can be frustrating at times. But you get what you pay for. Hub's technicians are knowledgeable, professional, very clean, and they do excellent work. It's also never a problem to get in touch with Hub or a technician. We've called other plumbers, but now use Hub for all of our plumbing and HVAC needs.

It was not good. They said they would try and replace the part that may or may not work, which they did tell me upfront. This did not work. I asked them for a quote to replace the whole until and the price was way too expensive. I called and got another quote from someone on Angie's List, which was a lot less expensive. They were charging rates that Sears would charge. I had to call them and ask them to fix the situation. I got a call 2 weeks later, which was not good. They did not handle this situation very well. I feel that the sales person I was talking with was too smooth and not giving me other options. I feel that the were charging too much.

We were scheduled to have our deck powerwashed this week when we realized our condo did not have any other water spickets available besides the one on our roof deck. This particular spicket had burst when we accidentally did not turn off the water for the winter. It was very easy to make an appointment for the same day I called (although only work hours were available...it is a $190 service fee after 5:00). My husband was able to get out of work for the 2:00-4:00 window. I believe they called him right at 2 to let him know they would be there shortly and they arrived at 2:15. They were able to fix both issues promptly and the work looks great!
Description of Work: Replaced a burst pipe that had frozen over the winter; Fixed our a/c output tube to empty in the same pipe as our washer drains out to (we previously had to tape it to the sink to drain)

First, the good: the tech, Mike, was excellent. They're a very professional, prompt and responsive. However, work caused an unforeseen problem: by re-routing the air in my unit (I live in a condo) it somehow shut off air to another unit. Not Hub Plumbing's fault. Bad HVAC design in an old brownstone. Here's the problem: the original cost of the fix was $2,370. It probably took the techs 4 hours to do the initial work. No materials cost. Assuming the tech's were paid $80 an hour (x2) = $640 worth of labor cost. Yet I'm billed $2,370. An unbelievable profit by any measure. Even the wine at Mistral isn't marked up that much... Moreover, they proposed coming back and fixing the poor HVAC design between the two units and priced it at an additional $5,600 to fix the problem. We're talking about a couple of air ducts between two units, not rebuilding a system. Given the sticker shock, we looked for a second opinion. So, I called another service, Boston Air who ended up fixing the exact same problem for $1761. One-third of the cost of Hub Plumbing. Again, I think that Hub Plumbing is incredibly professional, and I thought the lead tech, Mike, was an excellent guy. But I think that they're taking advantage of homeowners who live in downtown Boston, and they charge outrageous prices. Lastly, I highly recommend Boston Air. Just as high quality work as Hub Plumbing, but a fraction of the cost.

Firstly, thank you for your feedback. It is only through this that I can improve the operations of my company. Secondly, I would like to address the issue of pricing with my company. I assure you that I operate in the most ethical of manners, and I operate my company in the same way. Perhaps what occurred at your job is that it was evaluated in a different way by Mike, than by the person from Boston Air. I assure you that your value to my organization as a loyal customer far exceeds a "scorched earth" type of campaign where we burn every customer that we get. We have been in business for over 10 years, and if this is how we were to operate, we'd understandably cease to be. For some reason, I was not getting my reports from A/L, and I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you at your convenience. I stand behind my company and our work 110%, and I will personally see to it that we make you happy, one way or the other, with us. I understand that the job has been completed already, but please call and speak directly with me and I will do my best to take care of you. The hot water heater installation was performed on Columbus day (10/12/09). When I spoke to the dispatcher, she told me the only additional charge for replacing the hot water heater would be a small additional fee for the service call, but that the installation charge would be at regular rates. The technician arrived, did not even inspect the hot water heater and immediately said I'd need a new one. He quoted a price of $2,537 for installation and a service plan, and said that it would actually be more expensive ($2,800) if I didn't buy the service plan. My immediate reaction was that it was an outrageous price for installing a hot water heater and I said I wanted to speak to his supervisor. His English was broken, but he basically said that he wasn't authorized to negotiate prices, that no supervisor was available on the holiday, and that I could either have him leave (and still pay the $95 service call charge) or have the work done and talk to his supervisor later. Given how outrageous the price was and how bad his English was, I decided that the price must be a mistake and decided to just get it over with and have him install and then contact his supervisor the next day. I should note that, after he'd finished the installation, his English suddenly improved, which definitiely made me feel like the bad English thing in the beginning was a scam on his part. I contacted HUB the next day, called, and even emailed but no one ever returned my communications. Clearly, they didn't want to discuss the price issue, and I had also emailed them that I was concerned that the hot water heater had been set directly on the damp basement floor instead of being elevated on blocks like the previous one had been. Still no communication back from them. I was left feeling like they did not care about the quality of the work that was done, the quality of communication from their employees, or the impression they left on me that they were price gauging.

Thank you for your feedback, and I am truly sorry for the frustrations you have experienced on your work with us. Tommy Phan is from Vietnam, and has been with me for over 10 years. Although his English is not the best, he is a Licensed Master Plumber with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I assure you that he was in no way, shape, or form trying to deceive you as to the pricing. All of our pricing is indeed standardized, this way providing by-the-book pricing to all of our customers. Regarding the Service Plan, what Tommy offered was a way to reduce the price of your job, and all jobs that you had done with us for a period of 12 months following. It was in no way meant to coerce you into buying a job--on the contrary, it is just a means that the technicians have of discounting a job and providing you an extra value in the process. As far as a "D" for the quality of the work--this is what concerns me most. Most water heaters are indeed set directly on the basement floor. The cases have feet built into them for just that purpose. Placing a water heater on blocks reduces its stability, and creates a possible strain situation on the gas and water piping connecting to it--I am sure that if Tommy set the heater on the floor it was because he felt that it was best to do so. Normally, the only time we would set heaters on blocks like that is if you have a very bad basement floor prone to water seepage, floods, or things of that nature. That said, your satisfaction is my priority. Please call me at your convenience at 617.212.8230, and I will make every effort to gain you back as a customer with us. Thanks again for your feedback, with it we can constantly improve our organization. John Wood CEO Hub Plumbing & Mechanical 617.212.8230

As I told their field rep who called when job was done to hear about my "experience": The job is done, and my drains are running clear, but they are way, way, outlandishly OVERPRICED. This entire experience was a RIP OFF. Pricing is OUTRAGEOUS. They have quite a scam going. A wonder they stay in business. I had taken the afternoon from a busy job to meet them, and then did not want to refuse services when I heard the so-called "flat-rate price for the job" (on top of the $49 cross-the-threshold fee). ASTONISHED. APPALLED. NOT HAPPY--Paid it, got it done, and also let them schnooker me into some lame-o service plan--what was I thinking? I would never have them back again. WAY, WAY TOO MUCH MONEY. ABSOLUTE RIP OFF. DO NOT HIRE THEM! How do these people sleep at night? Bad. bad taste in the mouth. DISGRACEFUL.
Description of Work: Simple job: unclog a backed up kitchen drain/disposal (>1/2 hour) Two guys arrived in one of their glitzy trucks that you see everywhere here in South Boston. Then the flim-flam began. $49 to cross the threshold. $360+ for the job. This was a VERY SIMPLE JOB. Unclog a kitchen drain. Period. They did the work, and took great pains to make it look so tricky, and complicated...like I just fell off the cabbage truck or something...I only had them do the work, because I am busy, need a functioning kitchen at the holidays, and cannot take time off like this.

I am sorry that you feel the way you do. I assure you there is no "flim-flam" of anyone going on--I have invested far too much in this company to be doing that. The $49.95 dispatch fee is standard, on every single job that we respond to. If our technician was going out of his way to "make the job look difficult" it is because it probably was. Kitchen sink clogs can be notoriously difficult, cramped, and tough to break through because of the use of chemicals from the dishwasher, and the size of the pipe. Regarding our pricing, that too, is standardized. Our pricing is designed around the overhead we carry to operate a professional business. "Glitzy" is not the term I'd use for my trucks...they are designed to present a professional and dedicated organization, rather than a fly-by-night, unlicensed "plumber" from Craigslist that operates out of the back of a 1978 Datsun that leaks oil on your driveway. I am not trying to be funny, but the truth is this industry is plagued with unprofessional, unlicensed, and unqualified individuals that prey on customers. With Hub, we carry the overhead, training, drug-testing, and licensing necessary to operate according to the standards of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I am sure that my technicians were professional, neatly dressed, and polite. The grade of "F" for this concerns me--if this is not the case I would like to know, but I see nothing in your review that says so. The main concern seems to be the price of the repair. In closing, I assure you we are not operating a scam. I have a staff of 20, and we have been in business for over 10 years now. This may have been your first drain cleaning in a while, or ever, but I assure you our pricing is right in line. We need to purchase large amounts of equipment and machinery to be able to operate a company like this, as well as all of the other facets that go into it---accounting, health insurance, payroll, general liability, training--the list goes on and on. I hope this response helps you understand how we operate. Please call me anytime to discuss further. John Wood CEO Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Inc. 617.212.8230

I understand the pricing is tough at times...paying for a plumbing repair isn't like buying a new television or a vacation. I understand that on a very, very deep level. That said, I'm glad you chose, and continue to choose Hub. Thanks a million for the positive review here, it helps us innumerably in terms of business and reputation building. As always, we are here 24/7 for any of your plumbing and mechanical needs. John Wood CEO Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Inc.

Spectacular from beginning to end. We called them at 7:45AM and the plumber was here at 9:45AM. It's now 11AM and it's all fixed and water service to our condo building is restored. The staff was courteous and professional at all times. Our plumber was quick and efficient. We will use them again without forethought.
Description of Work: A hot water pipe sprang a leak in the early morning hours. HUB plumbing repaired the leak.

Needless to say, the next time I **really** need a plumber, he will be my first choice.
Description of Work: I thought I needed a new kitchen sink faucet in order to connect my new portable dishwasher. Mr. George advised me to go to a hardware store to purchase what turned out to be a $3 adapter. Of course, he could have easily fulfilled my original request and replaced my faucet for probably over $250. Instead, he gave me professional advice that saved me money.

I feel they are high priced, and also they use stickers to cover up old services rendered. The stickers had sales pitches on them. I don't think we would use them again. Their estimate was much to high and the way they operate we found offensive.
Description of Work: We hired Hub plumbing to come out and access a water problem in our basement. The estimate was to keep the basement dry.

I'm so sorry you feel that we operate in an offensive manner. Could you please clarify? The stickers we apply to equipment have service records on them, and a coupon for when they finally do fail that can be applied toward their replacement. I do not feel that there is anything underhanded about that--we obviously strive to earn business, and that marketing tactic is a common one in the service industry. If you would like, I welcome you to call me so that I can iron out any discrepancy regarding Hub with you. My direct line is 617.212.8230, and I would be delighted to have the opportunity to restore your faith with us. Yours truly, John Wood CEO Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Inc.

They were outrageously expensive. They didn't finish one of the jobs that resulted in a leak, so I had to call them back out. When they came back out they put it on me so I had to argue with the guy to get warranty service done. They did end up fixing it, but it was not pleasant. I would only use them in an emergency.
Description of Work: They installed a couple of sinks and reinstalled a toilet. They also did other kinds of general plumbing work.

I am so sorry for your experience; that is entirely unacceptable. Considering the money you spent, even if the leak was caused by something other than our work, we should have taken care of it for you. I assure you that I will make every effort to regain your confidence with us. Your experience should have been nothing short of perfect. John Wood CEO Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Inc. 617.212.8230

We had just moved into our new condo, and werre eager to take care of the plants on our new patio, The faucet leaked and sprayed water forcibly when we turned it on. We responded to a mailing and called HUB Plumbing. They came, and told us that there might be some extensive pipe work within the wall that would be necessary. they gave us an estimate of $350.00. In light of the work that they projected would be necessary, this seemed fair. When they actually began the job, it turned out to be very simple. With the replacement of the faucet (in less than 20 min.) the repair was complete. To be fair, the two men who came spent another half hour inspecting work that they had previously done for he former owners. There had been no problem with the job, and we did not ask them to inspect it. In the chaos of the move, we signed the credit card receipt. When we noticed, later, that the amount for less than 1/2 hour work was $350.00, we called the company. I was told that "there must have been two estimates given" and that I would be sent a copy of the estimates for the simple job (the one that was done) and the more complex job (that turned out not to be necessary.) Despite many repeat calls and e-mails, these copies were never received. No doubt this is because TWO estimates werre not given. When I asked for an itemized bill (to be submitted to my condo association for reimbursement) I was told that this company did not give bills that could be broken down into materials and labor.

Hub was one of the only plumbing companies I contacted from the List with a live person answering the phone. They were able to come out the next morning and evaluate the situation. Their emergency service was much cheaper than a couple other plumbers I spoke with ($190 vs $375). The plumber came out and diagnosed frozen pipes and told us to heat the house. He also mentioned that we should call the water and sewer company just in case. We made call to the water and sewer company and they sent someone out to check the water in the house since no water was flowing after warming the house to 75 on a 60 degree day. When the water company arrived, they found that the water to our house was off. Unbenknownst to us (and thankfully I might add) the water and sewer company detected excessive water use and shut off the water to the house. We called the plumber back and he came and fixed the burst pipe. It's only been a couple days since the work, so hopefully it holds up.
Description of Work: During our holiday travels a pipe burst in our laundry room.

Job went fine, but bill was over priced. To look at 2 slow drains on 2nd floor would be 735.03. Way, way over priced. Will not call again. Job should have been done for us half price charge.

Not good, at $50 per quote, it was a waste of money and time.
Description of Work: Very disappointed with initial experience with HUB. We are doing a complete gut plumbing job in a renovated single family and were in need of a few plumbing quotes for a complete overhaul. I explained the scope of the project to the person who took my phone call to schedule a time to get a quote. Instead we received a house call from a plumber who wanted to piece-meal a plumbing job for us. When I tried to explain to him what we needed, he didn't get it (not sure if the problem stemmed from a language barrier). All was a complete waste of time, including the 20 minutes he took to sit in his truck to write us a quote while we waited in the empty house.

Except for the price, it was a great experience. I called, the person answering the phones was great, cheerful and friendly. I got an appointment for exactly when I wanted it. The guys showed up on time, were careful not to track dirt or mud into my home, were professional and courteous. They did the work in less than 45 minutes, including the estimate and paperwork.
Description of Work: My toilet wouldn't stop running (insert chasing joke here). Also, my bathroom sink drain stopper had become disconnected. They replaced everything in the toilet tank for a little over $500. It works great now but, I was surprised by the price. The drain stopper, again, works great now, but it cost $226. There were no parts required and it took them 10 minutes or less. Shame on me for not getting a competitive estimate.

He was the third plumber to look at the leak and was finally the one that was able to resolve it. He was able to come out a day after I called. He was very professional and respectful of the household. Every time he was in our home he wore booties, so he would not track dirt into the house. He was very clear about everything that he was doing and gave me a price before he began the work. Overall I was very pleased.
