Established in 1999, Hub Plumbing & Mechanical is a locally owned and operated plumbing and heating company located in the heart of New York City's West Village. We took over the business of Philip George Plumbing after Phil sadly passed away. We still provide the type of personal service that his clientele were used to, and John Wood, the owner and his dog Chief are a fixture in the neighborhood. We offer a full range of plumbing, heating, and drain cleaning services, and John is personally available to deal with any estimates and service issues.

Plumbing, drain cleaning, water heaters, sewer cleaning, gas piping
We now used this company for two different services and were really happy both times! The first time they came to look at our radiators, because they were not providing enough heat. We were told that they were the wrong kind (which, honestly, makes some sense because we already came to distrust the original contractor). Nonetheless, Hub Plumbing were able to make them work a lot better and our experience in a New York winter greatly improved! The second time was to cap off and remove our gas lines, because we are switching to electric cooking. John was very responsive and helpful with several complications we have in our situation. Great experience! We will certainly use them for any future plumbing needs we may have.

We could not have been happier with the work performed. The care of my home and attention to detail at every moment of the project was greater than we've experienced with any contractor...ever...and this includes work performed by family members!! The greatest compliment we can provide is our recommendation of Hub, enthusiastically and without reservation, to our building staff, friends and neighbors.

I have never written a review about anything before, but given how difficult it can be to find (at least it has been for me) great plumbing services in this town, and given how excellent Hub, and specifically Dominik, were, I felt the need to share. I live in an apartment in brownstone which comes with it's own set of challenges. At any rate, I had a bad, bad leak coming from my radiator and after a quick assessment it was determined it was time for a new one. Dominik and his assistant lugged a new one up my four flights with great care for the walls and surroundings, and the same taking the old one out. They were here for 6 hours because there were unexpected problems, but they fixed everything and even repaired a hole in the floor around the output pipe. I don't think it could have been done any better. I will definitely use them again if the need arises and would not hesitate to recommend them.

This firm attempted to charge me $600 per hour to install new faucets?an outlandish rip off. Worse than legal fees! A plumber should not charge more than about $150/hr for master plumbing. At least the nice young fellow who came by alerted me to this crazy pricing, so I could send him away before getting ripped off expecting fair and honest treatment at real fair market rates.

We don't charge by the hour, as explained to you before we do any work. You have the option of declining; we charge according to our costs of running a business, which, in Manattan, are high. The job is a flat-rate price, and includes all new connections and Code-approved materials. I'm sorry you felt that this "attempt" by us wasn't a value, but we are licensed professionals, not handymen. This sounds like you were quoted in the neighborhood of $300 per faucet installation, which is entirely reasonable given the costs we absorb to send qualified plumbers to your home in Manhattan to do so.

I recently purchased a house. I had the seller/developer service all furnaces before purchase. This was done by HUB Plumbing in June, there tags are pasted all over the 3 furnaces saying all tested - good working order. I had a problem with one of the furnaces a couple of weeks ago and called HUB. They said the would have someone out the following day, Thursday Jan 3rd, they gave me a 2 hour window, they said there call out charge was $49.00. They never showed up for the appointment and did not call me to cancel. I called and the said they were busy,, but they could send someone out that night, however I would have to pay the EMERGENCY call out rate. I said no and booked an appointment for the follow ing day, Friday. It was really really cold, the heating was still not working. Again, the did not show upon Friday during the 2 hour window. I called and they said their technician was taken to hospital. I asked for someone else to come and was told not until Monday. They did show up on Monday. My 7 month pregnant wife was home alone. The guy spent less than 5 minutes lighting the pilot light and putting a guard around it. He gave my wife a bill for $400. She was somewhat intimidated and gave him a check. I called a while later and asked what cost $400? and they would not tell me anything other that we have certain charges. I was persistent and asked how can lighting the pilot and putting a $10 casing on it cost $400. The guy got nasty and rude. I asked for a refund of some money and was told no. My wife wrote to both the owner and general manager to ask for help over 3 weeks ago, but they have not got back to us. They are accredited by the BBB, so I did send in a report to the BBB. They are investigating

I got a post card in the mail from HUB titled "Are You Ready To Scream" which mentioned, among other problems, "Are you getting tired of those drippy faucets?" It also said $25 off. On Wednesday, Jan.16th I called a couple of times and finally got John Wood, who told me he was the owner. I explained that my kitchen sink's faucet was leaking and asked how much it would be to fix it? He said he had to come to my apartment to have a look and that he charged $49.95 for a service call. I asked if he was on AMEX and he said he was. He said when he came to my apt. he would assess what was causing the leaking and give me an estimate of what it would cost to fix it. The price of the service call would be deducted from the final repair bill--along with the $25 Off on the postcard--if I agreed to have him do the job. I asked what would be the price of the job? He said $586.00 plus needed parts. He wrote up the job and gave me a copy of the invoice. Before he left we discussed the possibility of my buying a whole new faucet--which he recommended I do. I said I would call him as soon as I investigated how much a new faucet would cost and if I could find one similar to the one I have. I went searching on-line and found that anything similar would cost in the $500 plus range. So I called him the next day and said I wanted to think about the whole job because it was going to be too expensive--even just the repair of my existing faucet. He said he had already ordered the needed parts, and, as I hesitated, he said he would take $75.00 off the bill --giving me a big adjustment--making it a total of $511.00. I said why not make it $500.? At that he asked if I could pay him in cash since he was doing me a favor? I said sorry, I would need to put it on AMEX, at which, he sighed and said OK just asking. I asked when would come to do the job. He said Monday or Tuesday. He didn't show up and had some associate call to say it would be later in the week. As he kept not showing up -- I got more and more annoyed and I realized--delayed reaction--that $75. was the $49.95 and $25.00 given to anyone and everyone as per the post card and his invocie. His big adjustment was actually $11. Long story short--I called every day and he kept saying he was waiting for the parts to come in. I lost one week already waiting for him and when I tried to pin him down--he kept using the delayed part excuse. Finally he got fed-up with me --spoke rudely and said he would send my $49.95 service charge back to me. What a relief! If he had only said to begin with that it will be two weeks before he would start my job, I would not be happy, but I would have just waited. I then went on-line and found another licensed plumber who would do the job for $175. plus parts. End of Story. I did not have Angie's List when I started--now I do. The reviews of HUB seem mixed. I don't know if it would have been different. I would never recommend HUB or John Wood to anyone.

Hi Ms. [member name removed], I'm just getting to this review now because I had no access to my account until an Angie's List rep brought it to my attention. I remember your job well: there were a number of Violations and Plumbing Code issues on your sink and the connections to your faucet---that's what costs money not the faucet repair. If you opted to have someone else do it for $175, I can assure you that those problems still remain.

After a very good experience with Hub (toilet / plumbing repair) we gave them another call to see how much they would charge to replace a leaking shutoff valve on a steam radiator. The Hub person came to our apartment and after a quick look quoted us a price of $675.00. Yup. $675.00 to replace a $25.00 part with a total work time of about 30 minutes. I called the office and spoke to John, who had been very helpful and courteous during our previous interactions. He very curtly said "the price is what Robert quoted you. We don't charge by the hour, we charge by the job." I said, "OK..." and launched Angie's List to find another plumber who wanted our business. We ultimately went with Stanley Lewis who did the whole job very professionally for less than half the quote we got from Hub. Sorry to see you go, Hub, and I really wanted to do business with you, but I can't trust a company who was going to charge me more than 200% of the going rate for a relatively simple repair.

Complete waste of a vacation day from work. If Hub Plumbing can't even manage to schedule an appointment for an estimate, I certainly wouldn't have much faith in the quality of their work. I will also let National Grid know that they are recommending a company with poor customer service.
Description of Work: I was referred to Hub Plumbing by National Grid to get an estimate on converting from oil to gas heat. The first appointment was made for a Saturday. A couple of days later I got a call to reschedule the appointment because Hub Plumbing does not have Saturday appointments. In fairness, this first appointment may have been made by National Grid, although I don't know why they would be setting up appointments for Hub Plumbing. The rescheduled appointment was made for today, 8/17/12, between 10-12 noon. Sometime around 10 am, I got a call that the technician would be there "closer to noon" because he couldn't leave the job he was on until the water was turned back on. I appreciated this courtesy call.At 12:`15, I called to see what was going on, was the technician on his way? I was told "I'm almost positive he's on his way". The receptionist said she would try and reach him and call me back. She called back a short time later to say she had not been able to get in touch with the technician. At 1 pm, she called me back to say the technician would not be finished with the job he was on for two more hours. I said never mind, I would find another company.

I originally called Philip George, a local plumber who I'd worked with many times in the past. It turns out that he has passed away and Hub has taken over his accounts, so the call went to them. The price I was given turned out to be about twice what I expected to pay, and the installation was lousy. The plumber they sent was a really nice guy, but they are overpriced and the end result was not good. I won't use them again.

The quote was a bit high, but I agreed as the work needed to be completed in a timely manner. The biggest issue I have with HUB was their inability to negotiate pricing (I'm sure HUB remembers me). I was charged $500 for snaking of two drains which took a total of 40 minutes. I can understand if snaking is difficult, or if it's 2 hours work, but $500 for 40 minutes of work is excessive, especially because snaking a drain isn't rocket science. I will not be using HUB again, nor recommending them to my associates (I manage buildings, and work in Real Estate). Had HUB been understanding in my concerns, I could have been a satisfied, and likely repeat, customer. In showing that all they care about is their bottom line (over customer relations), I am turned off from the company.

VERY SMOOTH! I thought that they did an excellent job being professional. The plumber was courteous and put on slippers when walking in my house so that the floors didn't get scuffed or dirty. He explained the various options and how that would translate to cost. He was very knowledgeable and extremely punctual with time. I would use Hub Plumbing again in a heartbeat! From start to finish, it was an easy experience and I do believe that they are worth the slightly higher price based on their attention to the smaller details.

I really wish that you had contacted me regarding your dissatisfaction. I would much rather have walked away from the work than earn my company a poor rating on Angie's List. Were you coerced into doing this work with us? With all due respect, regarding the other bids, how is it that we were dishonorable? Did we not correct the problem at the price we provided to you beforehand?

I am not sure what I paid was too much or fair. I liked the person who did the estimate because they refused to do the first toilet that I had. He seemed to be very honest and he talked to us about it. He was really great and I think he was one of the owners. Then eventually I got another toilet and he sent somebody out whom I really didn't care for and he was not totally into it and he came back after two weeks. I am not sure about their price because it was the first time I used a plumber.

The pumber, Robert, started by putting on booties over his shoes so that he didn't bring dirt into my apartment. I was very impressed with that and this was before I hired him! He then explained what needed to be done toinstall a new tub spout diverter. He had to add pipe to a short 1 and 1/2 incch pipe so that my tub spout diverter would work. This required him to sodder the pipe but he did it quickly and was very efficient and very neat. He's no nonsense and to the point and didn't waste any of my time. I'd definitely want to work with him again!
