My initial contact with Geek Choice was via their website. I emailed to find out if they worked in my area and to get an idea of the rates. I received a prompt, responsive, and pleasant email in return that fully answered my questions (instead of giving me the "just call us so that we can sales pitch you" kind of answer that you often get). When I did phone, the woman answering the phone was extremely pleasant, easy to understand, and helpful. She set up a same-day appointment, although obviously I there was no urgency to my situtation. She gave me an appointment time, but shortly afterwards called back apologetically to ask if that could be moved to later in the day. Ultmately the tech arrived within a very reasonable half hour of the later appointment time. My understanding is that Geek Choice is based in Boston, MA but contracts with small, local computer companies to dispatch them on service calls as needed. In that respect, I suppose that one's experience will vary with the quality of the particular computer tech who happens to be sent. My experience was a quality one, both in dealing with the computer tech himself and in dealing with the pleasant staff who answers the phones and arranges appointments. I was very pleased with Anthony Mendez, a polite, soft spoken, clean cut, professional young man from the lower Westchester vicinity. He carefully looked over the computer, showing me ways to improve performance and gave me other helpful tips (like where to shop online for reasonably priced computer supplies). In other words, he provided exactly what I was looking for. Happily, he spent his time working on the computer and not trying to sell me software, service contracts, etc. His demeanor was helpful and informative in a low-key, pleasant way. He didn't make me feel like a fool for what I don't know, didn't s*** unnecessary jargon, and didn't try to be an entertainment figure. I can't say enough good things about my experience. I would recommend requesting him by name if scheduling a service appointment. With regard to rates, it costs $50 to have a tech dispatched. There is a $100 minimum labor fee for a one hour visit. Therefore, the least a visit will cost is $150 for one hour. Beyond the hour, the client is charged $25 per 15 minutes. My bill totaled $200 for 90 minutes, but I feel that it was reasonable and I got my money's worth. The following day, Geek Choice telephoned to see if I was content with the service that had been performed. Needless to say, I am. I would use them again and recommend them to others.
