We were very happy with this deal. Jason looked over the roof, made some minor repairs, and provided what seems a balanced and fair assessment of the condition and future needs for maintenance. Would certainly use him again in the future.

This was in response to an offer on Angie's list to inspect and provide minor repairs to the roof. When we made a dtae Jason showed up as promised and did a thorough inspection and explained what needed to be done. He performed the services that were described in the offer and did some repairs that were not covered at no additional cost.

So I took a Big Deal to have a roofing contractor come over to A fix the gutter, and B to take a look at a larger project to give me an estimate. Contacted me quickly and Jason came over did the gutter repair and we had an in depth conversation about my issues with the roof. He was very professional and knowledgeable and gave me good suggestions. I have not decided what to do yet but I will most likely use him for the project.

Jason inspected my roof and made recommendation as to what should be done and what it would cost. He also emailed me a detailed proposal of all work that would be done. While I have not yet made a decision, I would consider using him for the job and I would recommend him to others. He was very informative as to what he believed needed to be done and took time to explain everything to me.

They did a good job and were pleasant. They started packing up after 3 hours and we reminded them that they had been hired for four. The one fellow kept counting 9, 10, 11, 12 as 1 hour each and therefore coming up with a total of 4 hours that they'd worked. We had to explain that from 9-10 was 1 hour, 10-11 was another hour, and that 11-12 was 3 hours. We had to go over this a few times until he finally understood. They unloaded their equipment and finished the job. While this mistake might not be representative of the company in general, our next project involves a kitchen remodel. We wouldn't want to have to explain time factors or anything involving math to the workers.

He took pictures of what he inspected from the roof to show us & found an old glaring rip & other openings in the gasket around one of our 2 pipes sticking out of the roof (We were admittedly getting leaks coming down the kitchen vent only during real heavy storms for a good while). He did say that he could reseal around it but that it would offer a temporary solution (6 months) at best. He explained in detail a couple of other solutions that offered a more permanent solution, along w/their respective prices & amount of work each would take. In the end, my wife & I chose for him to install a perma-boot (look it up) at an additional, fair & agreed upon price (not part of the original maintenance package). Guess what? Problem solved & totally worth it for the peace of mind & not having to go up myself to install it (one could readily buy it at a local hardware store, I imagine). This alone was worth the $$ buying this particular package through Angie's List (thank you, Angie!). I feel much more at ease that the work was installed by a professional (esp. when it comes to roofing). As well, he helped put my wife's mind at ease by thoroughly inspecting around one of our skylights that showed water stains in the interior (but no leaks) in the past (but which I still believe was already rectified by a handyman I had for other jobs in my home). Jason (Explicit Exterior) said he would look at the particular skylight in question again to be sure. In the end, he did find a few spots in which the old sealant weren't totally applied right or thinned out around the skylight. He re-applied a new seal & covered the areas in question. Done. Btw - he took the time to also answer many other questions I had about roofs in general - roof cleaning, build up of algae (those black streaks seen on roofs), expected lifetime of shingle roofs (particularly mine), etc. In his opinion, my roof is in fine shape & shouldn't need any replacement for another 15 year easy (it already is 15 y.o.). Again, I'd recommend Jason DeGroat & Explicit Exteriors! According to his business card, the company also does complete exterior & interior renovations. This is very good to know. Now I have someone else reliable to get quotes from for future work & comparison. I am extremely happy w/the whole experience. A total recommend!
Description of Work: Jason (owner) from Explicit Exterior, Inc. did everything exactly as listed in the description of the $99 roof maintenance package (full inspection, resealing, etc. offered through Angie's List. That alone is a TOTAL RECOMMEND!

Everything went great! We started off not sure if we ere going to finish the room. (We were thinking of finishing the room up ourselves). Jason gave us an estimate right away, as well as estimates on other projects. He was very professional, responded back quickly with any questions or concerns. The workers showed up on time, worked the whole day and did a great job with everything. They were professional and also able to answer any questions. They cleaned up nicely and were very polite. The room looks completely new! Everything that we had in our contract was completed with no problems. We would recommend Explicit Exteriors to anyone and we would use them again.
Description of Work: We hired Explicit Exteriors to help us with our master bedroom. We needed to put up sheetrock and put down a new floor. We started with an Angie's List promotion where we were able to have 40 hours of work. After the 40 hours were up, we had Jason do an estimate on how much it would be to finish the room. He gave me an estimate to finish with spackling the walls, finishing the floor, putting in the moldings , hanging the closet doors, putting in shelves as well as sanding down stairs and putting one coat of polyurethane on them.

It went great. They started the project immediately and arrived every morning at 7:30 to start. Completed new plumbing for shower. Completely guttered shower. They took out old vinyl shower and backerboards. Suggested options for shower like adding more lightning to bathroom which they did, type of shower door and floor tile for shower. They also changed plumbing for sink since we wanted to install a double vanity. Thye also laid down floor protection throughout house to avoid mess. Other contractors we have met constantly forget that. Took them 3.5 days to finish their job. Would and will definitely work with them again. The second project is still there. I just need to save money to do it next :) maybe 2015.

HUGE MISUNDERSTANDING!!! I apologize, but I never received any notification that you had purchased any big deal from our company. Usually when a customer purchases one of the big deals, a message comes directly to my message box. But I didn't receive anything! So sorry as we would love the opportunity of earning your business. Also please investigate a little further into what happened, because a F rating review really has a negative impact on our Angies List Profile. I assure you I have never even heard your name until I saw this negative review!! Jason

We are thrilled with the work done on our home. We believe the cost was reasonable, and the workmanship was top quality. Explicit Exteriors went above and beyond our expectations. They earned our trust, and we will be calling upon them again in the future.
Description of Work: When making the appointment, we explained that we wanted to replace the dark green shakes on the top part of our over-100-year-old house. We emphasized that we wanted "dark green" to keep the house looking essentially the same as when it was built, but we wanted the new shakes to be maintenance free. We were happily surprised when the contractor showed up with a sample of dark green fiber cement shakes. It was the perfect color! And It showed that he had actually listened to us. (Other contractors that we called for estimates brought samples of light green, blue, aqua, etc. - nice colors, but not what we had requested.) The contractor gave us an estimate without pressuring us in any way. He was prompt, professional, courteous, and he did not waste any of our time. Since we had checked out Explicit Exteriors' record in advance, we signed the contract right away. But that was our choice. It wasn't due to any crazy sales tactics. We were just eager to get the work done. After all, we'd been getting estimates for over a year, but none of them were for the dark green that we were emphatically requesting. The contractor put a time frame into the contract, and the work started and ended on time. The same workers showed up everyday. They were skilled, courteous, and industrious. The contractor checked the work continually as it progressed. He wasn't there every hour, but he was there much of the time. The new shingles were installed, and the trim was replaced. Our house turned out better than ever.

Response from Explicit Exteriors
Dear (Member name removed), I am truly sorry to have disappointed you. Even though you had purchased the deal 5 months ago, and had never responded to my email, I would have been more than happy to follow through with your roof tune up and inspection. Your negative review has extremely negative impact on my company with other possible potential customers on Angies list. I was truly just trying to avoid disappointing you. This is why I had tried to explain to you exactly how the roof tune up and inspection deal worked. I didn't want to see you not be able to get a refund. I really tried my best to make sure you were going to be satisfied with the deal you purchased. The description of the roof tune up and inspection says that shingle replacement is not included in the deal. When I gave you a rough idea of what the shingle replacement might have cost, please keep in mind that I had never seen your roof. I had no idea what type of shingles you had, how many were missing(you just said you had some shingles that were missing), the pitch of your roof, or the height of your home. You mentioned only needing Two shingles after I had told you $700.00. I also had no idea where you lived at that point, so I had no idea what my travel expense would be. I would much rather tell you $700.00 over the phone and upon actually seeing the job be able to tell you $400.00 or $500.00, instead of the other way around. I wouldn't want to give you a price of $400.00 over the phone and then when I actually saw the job have to tell you $700.00. Doing that to people I feel is worst. I would like to ask you to remove your review, because I honestly feel like I was only trying to help you, I by no means intended to upset you. Please go back through our messages with each other, and I think you will see that I was only trying to help. I didn't want to see you end up having to pay $100 for a service that you thought you were going to get, only to disappoint you by having to tell you that replacing shingles is not part of the deal. Once I made the trip to your home the deal you purchased would have been non-refundable. Truly Sorry for any inconvenience: Jason

I purchased a Big Deal that was to include a roof inspection and some minor work. I received contact from the provider in a prompt manner and set an appointment. They arrived on time. When they arrived I spoke with him about the 2 things I knew needed to be done. He walked around my home, but never pulled a ladder or anything to actually examine the roof. He gave me a price to do the repairs I had mentioned telling me that he would have to charge me almost twice what I could get it done by someone who was closer to my area because he would have to add travel time. At the time I was desperate to get this done ASAP and I agreed to have him do the work anyway. He said he needed a clear day but that it didn't need to be warm. I told him that my schedule was flexible and if he gave me a call the night before, I could make arrangements to be home to have the work done the next day. He said that would work great. I've never heard from him again and don't feel that he did anything for the money he was paid for the Big Deal.

(Member name removed), I really did everything I could for you. I had told you the job would take X amount of weeks, when I thought it was going to start in early spring, but after having to deal with helping you get a variance so that you could even have the work done, the job didn't end up starting until the busiest time of our season. You are upset with a hurricane, not really with me. I replaced everything that was damaged by the hurricane even though in all fairness I should have not had to. But I didn't even blink an eye!! I said"No problem Jim, I will take care of everything!" The fact that you are leaving me a bad review is just unfair! Your home came out absolutely amazing! And there wasn't a single day that some aspect of the job wash't being done. I am sorry that it took longer then expected, but we never stopped working! Keep in mind that the project cost me an extra two months of labor that I didn't anticipate. We battled swampy conditions through out the project! I literally had to dig a 10' round by 5' deep whole in your back yard just to contain the water! Did you forget that?] I am blown away by your actions! Jason

I got the Angie's List special of two workers for 4 hours. They rezipped siding that had come loose on the peak of our house, replaced approximately 15 pieces of siding and installed 3 outdoor light fixtures during that time frame. Only issue was that the workers sat at the wrong house for an hour and were reporting that no one was at home.

First, they apparently spent an hour at the wrong house on the wrong road, then called me to ask where I was. We rescheduled and they were able to find the correct road this time. I had requested to have 3 exterior doors squared, trim around the doors replaced and, if time permitted, wood trim around 2 garage doors replaced. While the work was satisfactory at best, 2 of the 3 doors now have drafts. In addition, I was told I needed to supply the wood for the trim repairs. Ok, would have been nice to know ahead of time as I laid out what projects I wanted to done and was never informed that I needed to obtain the wood. But they were at the house aobut 1-1/2 hrs when I paid for 4 hours of work. Since then, they've never contacted me to ask if the work was sufficient or when they could come out to give me the extra 2-1/2 hrs I paid for. At this point, I'd rather they not come out and I'll find someone else to correctly align the doors and replace the wood trim.

Response from Explicit Exteriors
Hello (member name removed), I am terribly sorry to learn that you were not satisfied with our services. If you would have read the description before you purchased the big deal,($299 for a general contractor for a day) you would have seen that no material is included with the service and that you are required to have all materials needed readily available. It also states that the service must be completed in one day, as we cannot make multiple trips to complete the hours your purchased. When my men completed re-hanging the three doors, they had asked your father in-law if there was anything else that they could assist you guys with, and he responded "NO" that would be all! He also made my men aware that the three doors you had us re-hang, actually were soo poorly installed originally that they were unable to close or lock. Once we hung them square, they did close and lock, but unfortunately from many years of not functioning properly and neglect the weather stripping was all bad. At that time, my men had informed the gentleman that new doors were badly needed. I also specifically contacted your wife via telephone the day of the service and offered to wrap your wood trim around your garage doors in a PVC coated aluminum, for a small additional fee to cover the material that i happened to have in my inventory. Unfortunately your wife declined to want to have the trim on the garage doors taking care of. Other wise I would have been happy to assist you with the garage door trim. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed with your review about my services, because I really go above and beyond to make sure all of my customers are 100% satisfied. I only wish that you would have taking the time to stay home the day of the service, so that we could have made sure you received exactly what it was you were looking for! Jason DeGroat

I have a lakefront home, that had been a cabin, that I heavily renovated and need to sell. Unfortunately there was no specific parking, other than on the road. This seems very typical of this era cottage, originally built in the 20's. This was a major issue noted by many of my prospective purchasers, and after much soul searching, decided to add parking. The property slopes steeply from the road to the house and I finally decided on a plan that would have a retaining wall built, and provide a gravel parking area abutting the road. I found a contractor ( not Explicit) who said they could do this easily, charged what seemed a reasonable amount and to an extent finished the work. The landscaping and grade was not restored, the wall was not finished well into the edges of the embankment, there was no special preparation behind the wall. The work was somewhat less than professional. Then I received a surprise, the building department and highway department were not pleased, and wanted an engineer's signoff. The contractor agreed to help me obtain this, and then largely ceased interacting with me. I obtained my own engineer, who met me on site, explained that everything was done incorrectly (which I am sure is why the contractor never obtained one). He explained all the requirements of building a concrete block wall, the need for geogrid to tie the block into the earth, that perhaps a stepped wall would be best to reduce the height of each section - but, after much deliberation, he thought it would be too difficult, too much dirt would have to be removed and drew plans for a concrete stem wall. I accepted this, but I did not think it would be pleaseant aesthetically. I started seeking out concrete contractors, and realized I needed a contractor who could tie together the concrete work, the landscaping, the excavation. I then found Explicit Exteriors on Angie's list and thought I would call because they advertise retaining wall work. Jason and his brother (sadly I am not recalling his name) met me on site. I gave them the engineer's plans for a stem wall, and said nothing more. I immediately felt as if I was speaking with the engineer. The explained all the ramifications of using block, laying out geogrid, the need for drainage, gravel and fabric behind the wall, that one specific tree needed to come down - and explained all the things wrong with the existing block and the existing work. They said flatly, they would not build concrete because it would be ugly, that they could build this in block - regardless of how much dirt would need to be removed - and would do it in two steps. That would reduce the height of each to a manageable amount, and be very attractive, that people really like stepped walls. They said they would reach out to the block manufacturer they use, have them prepare drawings, and bring those to my engineer and have him revise his plans. I realized this meant starting over effectively, but I felt confidence, and there was no question the block would be better aesthetically. They all but immediately did exactly as they said. They obtained the vendor's drawings, worked with my engineer on revised plans. I said I would handle the permits, but could not because of a conflict and they did that as well. The quote was not insignificant, however, included everything, removing a tree, discarding the existing block, even a few plants in the step area, and re-grading the highest level. They came to do the work exactly when they said they would, and the job is superb. It is more than a difference of night and day between their effort and the first contractor's poor showing. The wall is very neatly cut and angled at 90 degrees back into the embankment and very cleanly finished, the wall now has two steps with a lovely planting area where they laid mulch and a number of attractive small plants, the highest level was hand graded perfectly flat and neatly sloped and they even laid down pellets and seed in an effort to restore the grass. The block chosen is substantial and has a very different feel and quality to that of the first block used. The block cuts are very neat and precise. They had to install a handrail because there was so much removed of the first level that there was a flight of steps quite close to the wall edge, this was done very neatly, professionally, with a nice level of detail and very good fit and finish. All that remains to to obtain the final sign-off for an excellent job. Jason, his team, were very knowledgeable, kept their promises, completed the work as they said they would, and showed real pride in their work. I am very pleased.

Everything went very well. I was very pleased. They discovered a mold problem that needs to be remedied. Since the problem is quite pervasive, Jason took pictures in the attic and showed them to me. I asked him several questions about other work that I might want to so later. He answered all of my questions and was very patient. They were great. They were very polite and professional. Jason was very knowledgeable. I would feel confident hiring them to do ant type of remodeling work in my house.
Description of Work: I purchased the big deal. They cleaned the gutters, cut back the trees from the roof and inspected under the dropped ceiling in the mud room. They also inspected the attic, since a mold spot was found on the ceiling in the mud room.
