Hi, my name is John, and I'm the founder of Trapper John Wildlife Management Services. I pride myself on old fashion values that were instilled by my mom. When I was a teenager of which I still can recall clearly today how important my first job was to me. It was more to me than just independence, but rather on pushing the limits of my job position. I didn't just want to be good at what I was doing, but rather the best at it. I then began understanding people, people’s needs and how vital customers are to the success of a brand. At the very same time I also began noticing how many companies lost the fundamentals of serving customers and from their Trapper John came to light. Since then (Trapper John) I have been featured in "The Brooklyn paper", The New York Times", on the popular "NHK" Japanese cable channel, reviews on "Yelp" and let’s not forget Angie's List. Through more than 20 years of experience in urban wildlife issues, we've proven that even the most difficult problems have a humane solution. Our clientele span a wide range of satisfied customers, including large organizations such as Verizon, Home Depot, and New York City governmental agencies, as well as numerous industrial, commercial, and residential consumers. We are "not" a pest control company that uses and/or sprays dangerous chemicals and poisons. We use a winning combination of modern high tech equipment and in depth wildlife experience. We only deal with "wildlife species". As a result, we provide you a solution that offers long term peace of mind. If you wish to contact us then, please only do so by via phone. Thank you

Services we offer
Wildlife: Raccoons, Squirrels, Starlings, Sparrows, Opossums, Flying Squirrels and more
Initially I was impressed by this provider as he came in and seemingly was knowledgeable about identifying what was making the incredible amount of noise in my attic space. After numerous visits (which I paid for), he stated that he 90% believed it was squirrels, and then refused to set traps (his name is Trapper John!), and wanted to take a wait and see approach to the squirrels. After doing some research and finding that they are very destructive and may possibly chew their way INTO the house. I called another company and they immediately knew 100% that it was squirrels and immediately started setting traps for their removal. I actually feel quite taken by this provider - and will not recommend his services to anyone.
Description of Work: Was called in to identify and remove squirrels living in my attic/roof.

Response from Trapper John
Generally I do not respond to reviews as I welcome and appreciate all reviews good or bad. However in this particular case where I over extended my generosity of which was taken for granted followed by trying to discredit my character. Is clearly a no no. This home owner purchased the “BIG deal” for an inspection with intent to hire. Now on 9/10/13 after carefully inspecting the property I pointed out to her, that her wildlife problem(S) were in fact coming from an abandon building that’s directly attached to her property and explained to her all her options. I even went as far as pointing out a few major deficiencies. What “REALLY” took place here was stray cats, squirrels and pigeon’s had gained entry into an abandon building. Only the stray cat’s and squirrels had made their way to the home owners ceiling(S). The cat’s where on her first floor ceiling of which was promptly taken care of. As for the squirrels that were on the top floor ceiling, the only way to stop the squirrels from crossing over is to first close up every hole but one. You then evict the squirrels and close up the remaining hole. Mind you I explained to her that I have “NO” legal authority to work on the abandon building and to properly close up all these holes it would have to be done by a contractor. I further explained the techniques and laws on trapping and re-releasing. Basically trapping squirrels ALONE is short term and NOT a fix. I am not a band aid type of guy who disregards laws. You want long term results that give you peace of mind then you call TRAPPER JOHN cause I'm the guy that will give you just that.

Trapper John very professional, spent time explaining the issue and what he would do. His explanation clarified why the squirrel scratching sounds came and went. I feel confident that the problem is solved and am delighted to know who to call for these issues in the future.
Description of Work: Angie's List inspection revealed what I thought--squirrels in the wall on the top floor of a brownstone. What I didn't know was that these were baby squirrels. Trapper John set one way traps so that they would leave to find their mother when she was not able to get back in. Then the entry points were covered with mesh. Problem solved.

He was a very nice person. Based on what I needed though, he did not have the right type of product to fill in the gaps near my chimney caps for me to where the squirrels were getting through. He was to call me back since I did prefer to hire him for the repair and he never placed a return call. Maybe he thought he would have to charge too much for a service that someone could do cheaper. He was so nice though and I would have hired him.

John said it was a squirrel and wasn't sure if she had a litter (?) yet. He set up the one way trap - the squirrel can get out but not come back in. If it already had the babies it would try anything to go back in. He came back the next day to check on the cage/trap and sure enough she was frantically trying to get back in. John opened the cage and said we need to wait about 70 days for the babies to grow and leave on their own. Mid- Sept he came and set the trap again but it was still too soon, the mother was complaining around the cage, and trying to get in. Around beginning of Oct he came again to set the trap/cage again. This time he didn't find any activity around the cage and we didn't hear any scratching in the master bedroom. So John removed the cage/trap and closed up the area. This was this morning so I don't know if the youngsters are truly gone but I would imagine we would see the mother frantically trying to get back into the house if they are still there. John was very easy to talk to and he was very informed on this subject. Very patient and nice. he offered alot of advice when he saw the condition of my parents roof and advised me on what to ask the roofers and what to look for. I would contact John in the future (besides he gives a nice guarantee) and I would recommend him to others as well.
Description of Work: John came by around early to mid August to access the reason why we were hearing scratching sounds over the master bedroom. He said it was a squirrel.

It's hard to overpraise the service provided by Trapper John. I assumed he would simply go up to the attic, find the animal (turned out it was mice, not a squirrel), and that would be the end of the matter. In the event, he began by clambering all over the roof to check out possible entry/exit points. While he was up there, he pointed out several spots where our shingles were loose, found a potentially troublesome chimney crown and flashing, and finished by advising me how to fix an overhang where some wood had rotted by using drip-edge from Home Depot (total cost was $20 and 30 minutes' work on Sunday afternoon as opposed to getting a contractor to do it for $250.) Then we went into the attic and he spent half an hour scouting around (replacing a few broken lightbulbs as he did so) to find the culprits. After that, the basement, where he did more investigating. I should add that this was supposed to be a free estimate but we spent two hours going over the house and its nooks and crannies. He came back a few days later to repair a broken gutter where animals could get in -- and while he was there he also fixed the loose shingles and sorted out the flashing. In sum, I would recommend Trapper John's services unreservedly.

We called Trapper John to find out if he worked in the Orange County NY area, and if he had any experience with woodchucks. He returned the call promptly and while he would come to Orange County, he was very up front with the fact that he hasn't dealt with woodchucks. I was impressed with his honesty and openness. If we ever have a nusance animal that he does handle Trapper John will be the first person we call.

John was extremely pleasant and easy to work with. He explained everything that happened for the squirrels to get in and and why. He explained his pricing before he did the work and once he quoted a price, did a little more than he said, but didn't add anything to the bill. He was attentive to our concern that the animals not be hurt.
Description of Work: Identified the area in which squirrels were getting into my garage, repaired the area, inspected the inside to make sure there were no squirrels there and told us the best way to clean up the mess they'd made (they were there all winter & had at least 1 litter) and prevent them from coming back.

When John arrived at my home, I knew right there this guy was good. I explained to him that my neighbor and I are hearing noise in the attached wall to our houses. John asked what kind of noise, and I explained to him the best I could. He was not sure if it was squirrels or not and said he will check around the entire house, plus on the roof to look for any opening were they were getting in. He checked my house and also did a look at my neighbors, for if it was coming from there, I needed to know to inform my neighbor if it was there house. THIS GUY WAS GREAT. He took his time and checked all around the houses. He found that it was not squirrels, but birds that built nests in my neighbors drain pipe ,up against my house(but in there pipes). Also at the same time he did a inspection of my roof and air pipes for me. We were lucky to find my neighbor home, and John told him what was going on. My neighbor since, had the problem corrected, except for one more nest(which had baby birds in it, so we will leave it alone for now). I can not tell you how great John was. He went over everything with me, and made sure I understood the problem. I will call this man again if I ever have a problem like this.

It went very well. He first came a week ago and put in a device for squirrels to exit attic. After 3 days no activity was heard in attic. He returned today and took device out and closed up hole. He also addressed other areas that might lead to future entry. I was given a 2 year warranty. I am keeping my fingers crossed as I've had the squirrels for a while. I had hired another company back in February but they didn't solve the problem. He took care of some other problems that he observed during the inspection.

John was at our house for over 2 hours, gave us a quote and then reminded us about the Angie's List discount of $150. He did not try to oversell, and let us decide what we wanted him to do. He closed up all of the possible entry points and suggested we have some minor chimney repairs done. We were very happy and would highly recommend John.
Description of Work: John examined our whole house and made recommendations as to where animals could be getting in, and then repaired those areas. He was knowledgeable, thorough, explained everything in detail, and even took my husband's iphone up on the roof to show us pictures of what needed to be repaired. He gave us a 2 year warranty against any animals entering our house, and suggested we get a chimney co to make certain repairs. We were very happy and would highly recommend John.

John arrived and immediately knew where the squirrels were getting into the study roof. They had been in there all winter. He informed us the female squirrels have 2-3 homes and that they might have vacated the study by now, but he would set traps and return in a week, which is standard. He also showed us where one of bushes needed to be cut back at the front of the house as it would make it easy for raccoons to access the study roof if they wanted to. Whilst preparing the traps, John removed the gutter and informed us that the fascia board running the length of the outside edge of the study roof was rotted. Boy was it rotten! thanks to a shoddy roofer. He offered to replace the fascia board and also add the drip cover which should have been done by the roofer when the roof was done 10 years ago. This added only $200.00 to the $1000.00 for the trapping. He came back in a steady rain to finish the remaining drip cover area and to check up on things. There were 3 visits in total: 1st to look around and set traps, 2nd to check trap and do the fascia/drip cover, 3rd to complete drip cover bit remaining and to check up. The cost is expensive, but the work is guaranteed for 1-2 years, depending upon the level of work. Best of all, John will seal up holes, etc. A couple of exterminating companies, including the one we currently use, wouldn't do that. How they expect an elderly woman to get on a tall ladder and do all that work I'll never know. John is a highly experienced wildlife trapper, who is in demand all over the NY area. He works long hours, and if he's going to be late for an appointment, he'll call. This happened to us because he was coming from Brooklyn to us. John has a gentle demeanour and is very respectful. He is scrupulously honest, not pushy or hard-edged. I highly recommend him to the elderly clients or women on their own. He will not take advantage. He also will offer advice on ways to keep pesky critters from coming around and making themselves at home in your home. Our squirrels had already left, but the repairs have saved us. I'm sure we won't see pesky critters around again. Working with John has been a really positive experience. House: wood shingled, regular roofing, historic home built in very early 1900s.

Excellent! Squirels were completely removed!
Description of Work: Removal of Squirels, We have a semi-attached house. We were having lots of squirels running in between our ceiling and the attic floor between our house and our neighbors. It was the scariest experience. I had no idea that these critters could invade a house like that - we are first time homeowners. So we hired the same "extrerminator" the neighbors used to remove the squirels. However, the neihgbors mentioned that the had hired him several times before and that caught my attention. How come this problem is not resolved?. We hired him anyway and after spedind quite a bit of money I asked if we're getting to the end of this and he said no they'll come back again. He indicated that our situation could get better if we cover the "holes" that we have in the roof. I thought to myself, how does this man know we have holes in the roof if he hasn't check the roof? So I went to Angie's list and reseached animal removal. That's when I found Trapper John - my husband spoke with our neighbors and they agree to let Trapper John cehck their property as well. I called Trapper John and explain our problem. He basically educated my as to why the squirels were not gone - the man we hired was an exterminator - not a trapper. He agreed to come to our house and to our neighbor's house in order to assess the issue. Upon arrival, he told me that to do his assesment he didn't need to enter our house at all. He can see what the problem is and where its located just by walking around both properties! The exterminator we hired, had to come into our house all the time (so we had to take time from work to be present) and even broke a wall in our attic to be able to "trap the squirels". Trapper John assesed the situation and came back with the following: He said we didn't need to do anything, our house roof and walls have no wholes as the exterminator said. He only saw one area near the chimmey that could potencially become an issue and offered to fix it for $250 however, he said it could wait if we wanted to but eventually needed to be fixed - we decided to take care of it right away. Trapper John said the problem was in the neighbors house. Once their problem is fixed, we would have no issue. Needless to say our neighbors hired him on the spot, he gave them a warranty of a year or two - not sure - and thank G-d we haven't had any squirels since. He did all the work from outside the house. The impresive thing was not only he removed the squirels and gave a warranty, but, he could have told both of us we had issues and charge the same fee to both families, for squirel removal and we would have paid for that becuase in our ignorant view we both had the problem. Trapper John was extremely honest and told us they were coming in thorugh the inside of the neighbors house. He indicated that once the squirels in the neighbor's house were removed and he fixed the issues, we would have no problem. I highly recomend Trapper John - he will remove the crittes and in a fast, efficient and honest manner!

The overall experience was very good. John told me what he was going to do in order to set my expectations and then he got right to work. John was very polite and professional. Comlpleted the job in a timely fashion. I would tell anyone how needs to have raccoons removed to use Trapper John, you will not be disappointed.
Description of Work: I had a family of raccoons that had taken up residence in my attic. They would wake me up early in the morning and run arond like crazy throughout the day. I knew they were damaging my attic. I searched Angie's List John was quite thorough in his procedures; first he checked to locate the entry points the raccoons were using, then he closed them all. I had quite a few openings and he took care to locate each and every one of them. In addition, there were tree limbs near my house which the raccoons were using to gain access to my attic and John trimmed them at no additional charge. I was very pleased with the service John provided. I would reccomend ‘Trapper John’, he is a little pricey compared to some of the other businesses I reviewed, but‘you get what you pay for’.
