Trapper John

Animal Removal, Pest Control

About us

Hi, my name is John, and I'm the founder of Trapper John Wildlife Management Services. I pride myself on old fashion values that were instilled by my mom. When I was a teenager of which I still can recall clearly today how important my first job was to me. It was more to me than just independence, but rather on pushing the limits of my job position. I didn't just want to be good at what I was doing, but rather the best at it. I then began understanding people, people’s needs and how vital customers are to the success of a brand. At the very same time I also began noticing how many companies lost the fundamentals of serving customers and from their Trapper John came to light. Since then (Trapper John) I have been featured in "The Brooklyn paper", The New York Times", on the popular "NHK" Japanese cable channel, reviews on "Yelp" and let’s not forget Angie's List. Through more than 20 years of experience in urban wildlife issues, we've proven that even the most difficult problems have a humane solution. Our clientele span a wide range of satisfied customers, including large organizations such as Verizon, Home Depot, and New York City governmental agencies, as well as numerous industrial, commercial, and residential consumers. We are "not" a pest control company that uses and/or sprays dangerous chemicals and poisons. We use a winning combination of modern high tech equipment and in depth wildlife experience. We only deal with "wildlife species". As a result, we provide you a solution that offers long term peace of mind. If you wish to contact us then, please only do so by via phone. Thank you

Squirrels had gotten into our roof timbers and were scratching around making a racket. Every morning and every evening I could hear them above my bedroom and they were driving me crazy. I decided to contact Trapper John because of his Angie's List recommendations. He figured out where they had entered and put up a one way squirrel door so that when they came out to forage they would not be able to get back in. Sure enough, after a day or two, they all left. John then plugged up the hole. I would recommend his services to anyone who is having problems with invasive wildlife. He was very pleasant and informative about wildlife and other problems he noticed around the property.

John was very professional from the start and very prompt. He arrived at my house, assessed the situation, offered his recommendations and proceeded to implement them. Our "visitors" were gone that evening and John returned several times to inspect job, ensuring everything was ok. He also offered advice/tips on how to avoid this situation again. Would definitely recommend and have to other.

Not good. When I called I got a hesitant hello with no indication of who I'd reached. Wasn't sure I was calling the right place. Thought I woke the man up actually. Explained that I had a non-aggressive and sort of lethargic raccoon on my driveway near the backyard for the last 24 hours. The raccoon seemed a bit dazed and wasn't moving much so I'm worried it has distemper. I was told that the raccoon was probably passing through and wouldn't be staying and probably no one would come for the single raccoon. Due to the limited movement of the raccoon (traveled 10 - 15 ft so far) and it's lethargy I was skeptical that it is just passing (seems more like it would be passing away). Asked how much to remove the one raccoon and was quoted a price of $400 - $600. I found the quote to be exorbitant and asked then how much it costs to remove an attic or garage of raccoons. He said that wasn't my scenario. I replied I was just curious. He said he didn't didn't understand my question. At that point it was clear he didn't want to help me with my raccoon situation and was being coy so I said goodbye and wished him a Happy Thanksgiving (which was the following day). Wish he said he didn't do small jobs up front rather than wasting my time. Also, didn't appreciate him saying nobody would come for the one raccoon. He may be right but doesn't have authority to speak for all raccoon removal services. Overall, the inquiry was a negative experience and the price quoted was extravagant. Trapper John's response is not only antagonistic but indicative of how unpleasant that initial call to him was.

Response from Trapper John
I will not say sorry to hear you feel this way, simply because you could not be further from the true about my character. Funny you mentioning you had no idea of who you reached? Your call was routed via Angie's List service on 11/21/18 at 12:39PM of which it lasted for 4 minutes. So I'm guessing you did this either via Angie's list app or the web site over a smart phone. That is how Angie's List automated service works. As for as the hesitation is concerned, that I did. I will not deny it. To me Angie's List routing service is terrible. On many past occasions when calls have been routed. Either I get a lag/delayed or no response. So in your case I waited to hear the connection. As for waking me up is concerned. You asked me did you wake me up (At 12:39PM?). If you recalled my answer was NO. As for the so called "Raccoon" is concerned. You first mention to me that you have seen a Raccoon in your back yard (On 11/20/18) at night while your dog was doing its business the Raccoon was spotted sitting next to your dog? You also mentioned that on 11/21/18 a sort of lethargic raccoon was in your driveway for a few hours and you were interested in having it removed. You asked me how much I gave you a price range yes, between $400.00-$600.00 Yes, you expressed the quote being exorbitant. I tried to explain it will not be easy getting someone to come out and remove the Raccoon in your driveway for less than $400.00. For one the individual (a lot of Pest Control Companies send out techniqions that are not even liscend) who does such work must be licensed. Furthermore if in fact the Raccoon is expressing unusual behavior it should then be turned into ACC so that it is tested for rabies. So you get a better idea of my time worth. Driving to you, physically obtaining (Not trapping) the Raccoon, transporting it to the ACC and sometime you have to wait in the waiting area. So yeah my time is worth its value. You are entitled to your opinion and what you feel is the value of the said service is. Yes you also asked me how much it costs to remove a Raccoon from an attic or garage. If you felt my price on removing a Raccoon was "exorbitant" then why bother to inquire about a service that does not pertain to you? Because you were curious? If asking prices about service that do not relate to you shows I did not want to help you or anyone. Well that is your opinion. Now tell me who was wasting whose time. Not bad for someone that you claimed was "asleep" or should I say just woke up? Yeah I remembered (On 11/21/18 at 12:39PM) very well our entire 4 min phone conversation. Not to forget your sarcasm wishing someone a Happy Thanksgiving. Nice touch!!

I called Trapper John (John) upon the advice of the pest control company I consulted regarding the critters in my walls, and I'm glad I did! They suggested I make sure it wasn't a squirrel issue before I spent money on rat/mice extermination. Luckily, John happened to have a free slot same day to come check things out. He took the time and asked a lot of questions on the phone to get a good idea of the sounds and symptoms we were experiencing and where it was happening in the house. I could tell from the thoughtful questions he asked that he knows what he is talking about! When he arrived, he went up to the roof and looked it over thoroughly (even finding a few issues I will have to call my roofer about). Since we didn't find any points of entry there, we came down to inspect the back yard and interior of the house. He was able to access inside the walls via some vents I have. Voila! We found some mouse droppings and he said he was pretty certain it wasn't squirrels but mice. He spent about almost an hour here going over everything extensively and was really thorough. Verdict? No squirrels! He gave me good and honest advice about selecting a Pest Control company (before becoming a squirrel specialist he worked in the pest control industry) and said to make sure they give you safety data on the chemicals they use (I have cats) in case of accidental ingestion. He explained how they should apply chemicals for maximum safety and efficacy. While I'm happy we don't have squirrels, if I did, I would definitely give Trapper John my business. He was totally professional, honest, and thorough. I liked how he cared about my situation even though it might not be a job for him - he isn't out to make a quick buck, he really cares about his business and his clients (potential or actual). I work in real estate and will definitely be recommending him to my clients in the future. And If I ever get squirrels, he will be my first call!

It’s been well over a month since Trapper John evicted the squirrels from my attic. At the time he had informed me of an issue with the conduit on the side of my house which supports the wiring. It was not secured to the house at all. He told me that he thought that he would be able to secure it for me when he had some time in his schedule. I am pleased to say that he has returned twice since that day, to inspect his previous work and to secure the conduit at no additional charge. What a kind and generous professional! God bless you Trapper John!!!

John came and conducted a thorough inspection of my home. He pointed out the problem areas and explained in detail his process. I liked that he was thorough and patient. I agreed to his terms and he went right to work. He was able to rid me of the offending squirrels in that one visit! I am thrilled!!! He followed up a few days later and made some additional repairs. He guaranteed his work for 2 years. I can honestly say that he went above and beyond the call of duty. He pointed out issues with my house that I was not aware of. I could not be more pleased with the man or his work. I hope that I don’t have this problem again but if I do I will surely be calling John!

I am so glad that I chose Trapper John. He was so good at explaining everything to me and answered my many questions. He came on the dates and times that he said he'd be there. It wasn't long after meeting him and seeing his work, that I was fully confident that he knew what he was doing. And, what a good guy he is! I would hire him without hesitation, if I needed him again. The squirrels are gone and I have peace of mind! Thank you, Trapper John, you are a capable trapper and a great guy! I really appreciate all you've done to help us get rid of this problem!

It was very bad. I am very unhappy with them. He came, he looked at the home, and then he said he did not take any checks or credit cards. He said it was exclusively cash and that he does not write out what he is going to do on a receipt. He just says that he is going to get the animals out, but doesn't say how he is going to do it, not on paper, and that he is going to keep them out. He gave me an estimate of $1600 or something like that. So I'm suppose to hand over this money to this perfect stranger, not have anything in writing, and not dealing through insurance? I was totally dissatisfied. He said that this is the way it is, and I have done business with electricians, and have had quite a bit of work done on my house, and they stipulate what they are going to do and have done etc... He said in this business we don't do that. I got nowhere and I spent and hour with this man. He did absolutely nothing.

Response from Trapper John
Let me understand this. Prior to hiring Trapper John, you hired a publicly know exterminating company who charged you over $1,000.00 for a squirrel service that had not been correctly resolved by means of countless phone conversations with their management team and multiple unsuccessful callback visits. You then purchased one of our Comprehensive Wildlife Inspection deals. For those that choose not to read and/or ask questions. Forms of payment are: I accept all forms of payment except "Credit Cards". Always has been that way and always will be that way. After completing our inspection I informed you of my findings as well as a plan of action to correct your current issue on hand. As with every job I always leave by saying do you have any questions and/or concerns? In person we never discussed your said claim. In fact at a later time you called me because you had a few questions. I remember that phone call very well for the simple fact that you were being persistent, the phone call was almost an hour and I was driving at the time. 1) Do I accept "credit cards"? My answer was NO. You quickly replied by saying everyone takes credit cards and how is it possible that I do not. You simply didn't like the fact I would not take credit cards. I remember this very well because you were persistent on pushing the issue. 2) Would I write out a detailed receipt as to what materials I will be using, exact placement of where the materials will be place, length, what would be used to secure the said materials and exactly where would the placement of the Squirrel cage be placed on the house. My answer was NO followed by I general write out on a receipt "Eviction and Exclusion" and as far as where the Squirrel cage will be placed. It is placed over the current opening that is being used by the squirrels. You responded by saying every electrician and contractor writes out what they will be doing in written details prior to starting the work and it is not how a business is run. And after that did I not asked you "Did the Pest Control company that you hired write out a detail explanation of the work scope? You said "NO" You were persistent on trying to changing my mind as to how I run my business and the fact that I needed to conform to other trade practices. I further tried to explain that comparing the "Pest Control" and/or "Wildlife Control" trade practices with "Electricians" and/or "Contractors is unfair on many levels. If the above was of any value to you. then you should have inquired about this prior to purchasing a deal and/or hiring Trapper John. As far as homeowners insurance is concerned Squirrel(s) are not covered under the policy. So NO I will not go through insurance. That's insurance fraud. Prior to your purchased deal you never inquired any information as to your said claim or how I run my business by either means via on our Angie's List company General Information section, email and/or our initial phone conversation. Your review is unjust and certainly tarnishes the whole concept of its use. And to top it off 2 months after I preformed the inspection you contacted Angie's List for a request for a full refund of services rendered. So, Thank you for allowing me to drive from NY - NJ (Yeah Gas, Tolls and my time) to perform a free inspection of your house. All I know is I will sleep easier then you. Thank you!

After making an appointment, John arrived and explained what he would do, how it would be done, and how his work would be guaranteed. John evicts the wildlife, they are not trapped or exterminated. John is highly knowledgeable, very professional, personable, and polite. He surveyed our home (exterior) and then gave us a plan and a price. John was very accommodating and we were able to set dates and times for him to set-up and break-down. During the eviction period, John called to see how things were going, if we we heard any noises or see any evidence of the squirrel(s). At the end of the eviction period John returned to explain what was done to prevent the squirrels from re-entering and remove his equipment. Before each visit John would call before arriving; before doing any work he would explain what needed to be done, and was always pleasant, willing to offer advice and answer any questions. Good job. Good price. Great guy.

You are correct about purchasing that deal from an email you had received. Not a store front deal. I did call you within minutes and if you recall in our conversation, you felt I was inflating my approximate price and that's where things between us began to spiral downwards. I then advised you to request a refund through Angie's List and you told me that I should refund you and you can't be bothered. When any deal is purchase it goes through Angie's List, they directly collect the funds. Therefore I have no way of refunding you.

I have a 3 story A frame house. A mother raccoon brought her babies here and made her home between my floors. She n babies climbed up drainpipe n across the gutter into a hole the mom dug into wood by the gutter. I heard them running over my 2nd floor ceiling n even climbing in my bedroom and other walls. I was nervous n concerned she would damage walls wiring n get into my living space. I contacted John n he came on a Monday to assess my individual situation. He began his work on Wednesday n the following morning (5:30am Thursday) we saw the mommy move babies. I texted John that same day - Thursday - n he called to speak w me. I informed I still hear a baby in the walls in the attic. He reassured me since the sun was coming up she would be back to get them at nightfall. N yes she came back after 10 pm n moved not one but 2 from the gutter. After a marvelous family reunion mommy brought the remaining babies down to her new home. John closed up every opening. John was courteous, professional, explained everything in detail n told me about options for my situation. His price was reasonable n I was immediately relieved when he came. He alleviated my fears. Now this house is clean. I dub him "the raccoon whisperer." He is nothing short of genius in his specific field.

I thought John did an excellent inspection.
Description of Work: I heard an animal running across the ceiling of my downstairs, I purchased a special thru Angie's list for an inspection to see what had gotten into my house, My daughter and I thought it was a squirrel. John came and inspected the whole outside of the house. He told me the house was very well sealed with aluminum on the soffits and facsia, he checked around the whole foundation, we went in the attic and checked the roof vents, we checked the basement, and went out on the lower roof to check the roof vents which he said are often a point of entry, He told me that the only thing he could find was some mouse droppings on the roof by a gutter and a possible entry point between a chimney and that gutter that had an acorn stuck in it. He put folded newspaper tucked into the possible entry point and on the lower roof vents and told me to check in two days to see if they were torn or ripped and it would show me if a mouse was getting in somewhere. I found the only newspaper that was disturbed was the one between the gutter and the chimney, I found it on the ground the next morning. I nailed a piece of wood in front of the entry way as John suggested. We have not heard anything in the house since. I thought John did an excellent job of inspecting the house and giving me directions on what to look for and how to prevent pest entry into the house. He said there was no entry point big enough for a squirrel or larger animal.

Trapper John explained the habits of squirrels to help us understand his removal methods, and was patient with our questions. We respected his professional attitude and knowledge, and found him helpful and courteous. His quote was more expensive than we got from other companies, but he's worth it! There was no drama, just the peaceful coaxing out of our squirrel squatters and sealing of the roof area to prevent them returning. He also lopped off tree branches that were providing easy access for the squirrels, and that was an extra. His work comes with a guarantee. Highly recommend!

He showed up late. Walked around the outside of the house came back after a couple minutes gave an estimate of $1400. Guessing it's squirrels? Could be rodents asked for the final payment to be paid day of service. So, he's looking for a deposit on a job he couldn't be bothered to look in the attic for to see if there's actually squirrels, rodents, or a racoon or anything at all ? Waste of time! NO I will not be hiring Mr Trapper.

First off lets be honest here you wanted a free estimate and was not interested in an inspection. second thing I called you and as I do with everyone if I run late I call. Your review is slandering of which holds not credit to your claim. A free estimate is for me to walk around the exterior of the house of which I explained that prior to setting up YOUR FREE estimate. The exterior will tell me a lot of what is going on as well as how to handle your current issue on hand. What would you have like me to look at in the house? The attic and see what??? I didn't just guess and I have not guessed being in business for 23 years. Maybe it could be rodents (Mice), but you never paid for an inspection. Again it was a FREE estimate. To clarify I never look for a deposit I clearly explained our payment terms should you wanted to proceed with the service. Also I know how to read the exterior of a property and know if in fact a Raccoon had gain entry, in this case I explained why it was not possible you having Raccoons. Your review is basically slandering and nothing more than that.

I don't want to waste any more of my time dealing with this provider as he bailed out on the job (AFTER I had my bank send him 50% of the payment) and now I have to stop the payment and find another service provider. But I figure the point of Angie's List is reviewing the services. It stinks to have to give a poor rating. The worst thing about dealing with this provider was that I had to walk on eggshells not to get him angry with me for the weeks that I worked to coordinate one visit to my building. It was the most stressful thing dealing with him. I am a busy working mother so this took a lot of time and effort on my end. Every phone call I had was a really long call where he would go on and on analyzing what he just said and telling me stories of how he has been burned before in the business. I tried to be patient and understanding that maybe customer interfacing isn't his strength, which is totally fine if you know how to do the job at hand. I never guessed that kindness and patience with someone not so great around people would leave me stranded! One phone call last Saturday turned into twenty-five minutes of him talking and going around in circles to the point when I thought he told me he would accept payment on the first day of the job. The following Wednesday, when I asked if he would call the roofer he had agreed to coordinate with for our work, he told me he wouldn't do anything until he got a check (which he only accepted by post). I said, "I wish you would've mentioned that on Saturday". No sooner had I uttered these words then started yelling at me on the phone for another ten minute harangue all to say at the end that he would not proceed with the work. Again, this is after I had my bank send him a $600 check. I am just stunned. This guy definitely has trust issues with people and definitely cannot be flexible with balancing act of working with other parties (in my case, three other homeowners in my building and a roofer), even if he does work magic with the wildlife (which I don't know, I am just assuming from the other reviews)! I'm very upset about this, but it's definitely for the better I am calling another company. If you hire him I hope it works out but be warned!
Description of Work: John came to my home and inspected my roof for squirrels. Over the course of a few weeks he communicated with me to sort out a plan to evict squirrels and seal openings where they were entering, including coordinating with another party to complete the work.

You first contacted me on 09/08/2015 via email, after several emails and a couple of phone conversations we proceeded forward and scheduled an inspection for 09/24/2015 Keep in mind I explained clearly that deals are to be purchased prior to inspection or you will be subject to an inspection fee of $260.00 of which you purchased ($99.99) an hour prior to my arrival. In person I reminded you of this, but I still honored the deal. After performing the inspection I explained clearly what needed to be done and in what order as well as the (Deposit on the start of service forms of payment Check/money order) payment terms. In addition, I even furnished you pictures of the problem areas. Keep in mind you were writing all this down. Prior to leaving as I do with all potential clients I asked you do you have ANY questions and/or concerns. Your reply was that I had covered everything, but you had made a special request of a detail email of all that was explained along with pictures. So I did this on my day off to please. From that point forward it was countless emails and phone calls along with special requests as to meeting with a contractor, then a roofer at specific hours Keep in mind no money was exchanged and again I had to remind her before I can do anything a deposit must be made. You can not expect someone to work for free? Glad she mentions we spoke on a SATURADAY Keep in mind that is my day off, again what do I do I try to please by answering another phone call which yes lasted 25mins. One has to ask if in fact as you claimed you had to walk on eggshells, every phone call was as bad as you say, me having anger/trust issues, and you already sent me the deposit of which your implying I received, So why did we communicate for a month and half?? Moving forward 10/21/15 I receive a phone call (Mind you its Wednesday) from her roofer requesting to me that week. I immediately call the said customer and again (fourth time) explained the payment terms. At this point I had to be firm, but was polite and explain that without a deposit I will not move forward. On that very same day we spoken three times and on the final phone conversation she says she had gotten a bank check cut and would be mailing out soon, but in the mean time would like me to meet with her roof. She also tells me she was not aware that she needed to have a deposit in order to start any work. I proceeded to remind her of all our past communications. In short I was polite and I advised her to find another person who would be capable to handle her wildlife issue. That didn’t go well with her of which she began placing blame on me. The rest you can imagine.

I had a contractor come by to fix a leaking bay window, after his inspection he gave me long list of items; things that needed to be repaired as well as suggested improvements. He also pointed out that he saw squirrels in my gutters and I had to have them removed. Two days later (on a Friday), I called Trapper John, got his voicemail and left him a message. John called back the same day and offered stop by since he was on his way home and he would pass my area. Granted, this was at night, and he went out of his way and visited at 8pm. He did an inspection and did not see any openings where squirrels could get into my attic. He came back the following Monday during the day, did another inspection and had the same result. I called the contractor to explain John's findings and John offered to be on a conference call with me and the contractor and explained exactly what he did. Based on the findings, the contractor agreed with John's assessment. I was extremely pleased with John's level of professionalism, he is very knowledgeable, patient, responsive and answered every question I asked him. I would highly recommend his services.
Description of Work: John initially came by to inspect my roof/attic for squirrels. At my request, he came back and did a full property inspection to see what if any vulnerabilities I had around the house.

Although he didn't see any pests he concluded it was very likely that we had mice because "almost every house has them". He offered some suggestions about how to prevent pests from entering our house. His services did not include pest removal.
Description of Work: He looked in our attic and on our roof for evidence of pests

I would like to point out that "Pest Control" compared to "Wildlife Control" it is a completely unique field all in its own, of which DOES NOT fall under the same license and certification of "Pest Control" To preform wildlife control the individual must obtain a nuisances control license. As noted in my bio I am not in the business of nor licensed in "Pest Control" Now I'm not sure as to why the Quality (Which was a comprehensive wildlife inspection) and Professionalism rating was a C Lastly the Responsiveness a D All emails were responded to the very same day and appointment was set on the day as promised. In the following categories of Quality, Responsiveness and Professionalism you were not fair.
