They prepared the house by power washing and then scraping oll paint. They Also coordinated the carpentry work which was done in quickly and correctly. They then painted the whole exterior of our house. They cleaned everything and removed all construction waste. Overall a job well done at a very fair price.

I chose him because he had done a good job and I had a relationship with him. Also, he did the work when I was out of town. I'd say he charged a market price.

I am dealing with them right now. We have not started the project. It's not their fault. It's my fault. I really like Gerald, the gentleman who owns the company. He has been very responsive and extremely helpful. We just haven't had the time to start our deck but he will be doing it in the next couple of weeks. I went with him because of two reasons. He had tremendous references in Angie's List website and I instantly liked the guy when I talked to him and met with him. He was extremely knowledgeable very helpfully. We have had a deck for many years but we have never stained it. He had a lot of good recommendations for that and I think he is a really good guy.

They gave me some tips on what to check to narrow down the problem. They were very helpful. I am only renting the space and my landlord decided that he was going to use somebody else. I would have used them had it been my decision. They were very responsive and very professional.
Description of Work: Queen City Construction came out to look at a problem. They said they would have to open a couple of places to see what was broken. They said they couldn't give me an adequate estimate just by looking. The problem was hidden away between floors.

Response from Queen City Construction
Wow...sometime one has to question who writes these things and their motives. Nov 1, 2007 we completed a small project for this customer. The house had good “bones” but it was money pit in waiting because of years of neglect, there was a large blue tarp covering a portion of the roof. We were contacted by the customer to repair her kitchen ceiling because she had apply for home equity loan and was told that the repaired needed to be done before they processed her loan. There was a leak from a 2nd floor bathroom and the water damage had cause a portion of the ceiling to collapse, the plumber who did the repair had open the ceiling to get to the pipes. We were asked to install drywall in these areas, it was a bear bone project: she didn’t want it taped nor painted. We did add an access panel, in case the pipes leaked again there would be no need to open up the ceiling. We can provide an estimate outlining the scope of the job, we have copy of her check (Sign and Dated Nov 2, 2007) and we have before and after pictures. Now 2+ years later she writes a negative report. This makes no sense. She was happy with the job, so much so, that she referred us to her friends and family. If were not professional, why refer us to her friends and family. The only thing that we could think off is that something recently happened and she is blaming us. But all we did was drywall area that had been left open from a plumbing repair several years earlier. Even this report doesn’t make sense, she gives us fairly high marks, but states that she wouldn’t hire us again. This is just a person’s opinion and she is entitled to it, but it is unfair and bias.

They were amazing! When they came in to give an estimate, he gave us three separate possible scenarios of how he could handle this job. He took pictures, which was great, and forwarded them to me, which was also great. I could then forward these to my insurance company which was perfect. They put up a whole new ceiling and molding. They repaired, they sheet rocked and painted the ceiling. This involved not only cutting the sheet rock to size put also taping and sanding. It also involved painting the molding. They came back to check the painting. He took no shortcuts! He asked us to clear out the room. We decided to leave some of the furniture in there, and told them they could just cover these pieces in plastic. They picked this furniture up and moved it into the kitchen every morning, and then moved it back every night. His price was $100 less than the other estimate we received. They cleaned up well. He did a fabulous job! Its is just gorgeous. It was worth every penny!

Gerald was very professional throughout and we are very pleased with the results. He spent a substantial amount of time with us prior to beginning the job discussing what we wanted and was very helpful in helping us plan the project. He and his employees arrived every day on time and cleaned up thoroughly after each day. We were pleased that when the paint he used turned out not to be the right color he repainted with the correct color immediately and without compliant. He completed the job when he said he would. The project has made our room much brighter and more livable, and we are very satisfied.

Gerald went beyond common courtesy. After our initial phone conversation I had emailed him an extensive list of renovation tasks (Refinishing an house filled with outdated tiled ceilings, wallpapered walls and worn hardwood floors + gutting a moisture damaged basement) for the 1930's fixer upper Tudor my husband and I had just purchased. I also gave him a time frame (10 days) and budget ($7,500). He said right away (most politely) that he could not accommodate the budget nor swing the time frame because he had recently undergone surgery. Despite the fact that he could not take on the work, he still took the time to come and look at the house. He gave me valuable advice as to what to expect while renovating, insight into plaster vs drywalling, oil vs water based paints, etc and also cautioned me against going for the lowest bidder outlining some shortcuts and compromises they may make to give me that low price. It was Construction 101 and just what I, a first time home owner panicking from the reality of the renovation, needed, to re-focus on the task at hand. There was no reason for him to go out of his way, but he did so, because of that rare reason: someone who has a deep and thorough knowledge of his chosen vocation and who is not threatened by sharing that knowledge. I would hire him in a heart beat when my budget allows it. (Please note he is not necessarily expensive, my budget was limited.)

The work conducted by Gerald and his crew was professional and within the estimate and my wife and I were most satisfied. Gerald was very helpful in the color selection, updating the estimate when we found water damage to the bathroom floor that required floor replacement and scheduling the crew during the weekend to complete the painting. He returned to review the workmanship and ensured that we were satisfied with the job. We plan to employ Queen City Construction for future work in our home
Description of Work: Gerald Nesbeth, Queen City Construction, worked during the week of Thanksgiving on our home. The work consisted of stripping wall paper, replastering and painting a half-bathroom, replacing the vinyl sheet flooring in the back porch and bathroom and repainting the foyer, stairwell and upstairs landing.

My wife and I searched for contractors on Angie's List and chose two who were closest to us and added one more local provider not on the list. We invited all contractors to meet with us and we explained what was needed on site. The job needed to be completed within a tight time frame as we were celebrating our daughters marriage in our garden and the job needed to be completed in a timely manner. We had a "window" of about one and a hlf weeks to get the work completed and the job was complicated by the rainy weather that limited work time. Mr. Nesbit conducted himself in a professional manner from the outset. His quote was reasonable and clearly presented. During the job, we also asked him to power wash the patios and stairs, which increased his initial quote. He was responsive throughout the process and made sure that the work was completed on time and the clean-up done following the job. He came by a few days after ouor event to touch up a small area that needed an additional coat of paint. We were very pleased with the work and would use this contractor again.

I called for an estimate because I recognized the name of the company, and a friend had said they did excellent work. Contractor was late to appt (but he called and it was ok). Seemed very knowledgeable and I had full confidence that he could do the job. I explained what I wanted. When I received the quote it seemed on target pricewise (about $2000), but the quote only said "painting of living room ceiling" not patching it. I called him to have the quote redone - we had actually discussed that I did not want to have the ceiling painted because I was planning to paint the whole house in the future, and I assumed it was just the wording in the quote that was incorrect. It took at least a week or more to get the revised quote with the correct language, and when I received it it was $400 more than the original. By email I questioned the increase, that I thought the first price was fair and that I thought it was just the wording that was wrong, but he never replied.
Description of Work: Wanted contractor to close off a bedroom that had been opened up on to the the master bedroom, and reopen it on to the hallway, as it had been originally. I also needed the ceiling patched in the livingroom from my investigating a bathroom leak.

It never surprise me how people can manipulate things to their benefit. As I read her post, I am having a hard time trying to find the issue or problem. From the first time I met this customer to the our various emails exchanges, this customer has tried to intimidate and bully. When I first met her, she state that "she works for lawyers and she knows how to get her way". If the worst that we have done as a Home Improvement Company, it is not to bow to a bully: I can live with that.

Gerald Nesbitt is professional courteous and punctual. He took great care in minimizing the dust trail in/out of the one room under construction and he completed the job expeditiously. Both Mr Nesbitt and his employee took care in every part of the job. The floor refinisher he hired was not careful and splashed floor finish on my freshly painted baseboard but again it was the sub-contractor, and it was a small area that is concealed now by my furniture. I intend to have Mr Nesbitt repair a hole in the ceiling in a smaller bedroom, after a leak from the upstairs radiator, caused water damage.

Thanks for the posting. As far as why we were so cautious, this was a small project in which no one would be home for us to explain issues as we encountered them. Experience has taught us to be as up front as possible, eliminating error or confusion.

Gerald is professional and thorough. He reviews everything with you before he begins the work. His estimates and contracts are professionally prepared and can be sent via email. He also corresponds via email which made it easier for me. The clean-up after each day he did work was amazing....I never found that I had to clean-up after him or his workers. Gerald also will "educate" you -- explaining how things work, the pros and cons of work he is about to perform. Gerald takes care while working. I have had construction people in the past who are rough when they work. Gerald is careful, precise and efficient. My only issue with Gerald is that if he is involved with a bigger project like construction on a kitchen, he cannot commit to a fixed schedule to complete the work he begins on a "smaller" project like mine. Therefore, a project that could have been done quicker, lasted over 2 months. The guest room was not a rush job, so I was ok with the time limitations he had. Other than this minor issue, I would highly recommend Gerald.
Description of Work: Patched, repaired, skim-coated and painted a guest room. Removed sliding glass closet doors and installed two individual doors and installed hardware (door knobs, hinges, etc). Replaced built in wall unit with 2 bookcases. The carpentry work was excellent! Painted both bookshelves. Built a radiator cover.

I am glad that she is happy and more importantly: she posted a positive response. As far as the delays, it wasn’t on our end: 1) The scope of the job changed to included building a replacement radiator cover and other things. 2) We were not aware of this when we started, but she required that someone be there whenever we were there, so she would email us a list of days when she would be home. Here is a sample: “ Here's some dates...Fri, 4/10 Sat, 4/11 Fri, 4/17 Mon, 4/20 Tues, 4/21.” The schedule was totally dependent on her: allow us access and we are done in 2 to 3 weeks. The fact that we were able to complete the project within her constraints, I believe is a credit to us.

It was a terrible experience. When I e-mailed them to make an appointment, they did not return the e-mail for a week. When I finally spoke with Gerald and try to set up an appointment to meet and to get an estimate, he said that he could not come on weekends because it interfered with his "personal time." I then tried for the early evening, but that interfered with his personal schedule too. We set an appointment for 10:30 am on a Monday, and I had to miss work. Gerald never showed and never called. I called him and left messages and never got a response. I don't know how companies like this stay in business. My experience with this company was much different from the good reviews that I read. I guess Gerald is busy with Angie list referrals and does not need the new business. I do not recommend them because of their lack of professionalism and lack of common courtesy.

WHAT THIS CUSTOMER IS DESCRIBING IS COMPLETING INACCURATE! AS I READ IT, IT COMES ACROSS MORE CATTY AND PETTY RATHER THAN AN IMPARTIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED. WE RETURN OR RESPOND TO EVERY PHONE CALL OR EMAIL, WHILE I WILL READILY ADMIT THAT THERE GOING TO BE TIMES THAT THINGS FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS AND IT MAKE TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS FOR US TO GET BACK TO YOU. LEADS ARE WHAT DRIVE OUR BUSINESS; WE CANNOT AFFORD TO MISTREAT POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS IN THE WAY HE DESCRIBED IN HIS REPORT. AS A SIDE NOTE, I WOULD SAY THAT THERE IS PROBABLY A REPORT SUBMITTED FOR EVERY 6 OR 7 ANGIE’S LIST LEAD/CUSTOMER. MEANING A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO USE US AND ARE HAPPY, NEVER SUBMIT A REPORT NO MATTER HOW HARD WE “BEG”. SO THE RATE PROCESS IS SKEWED BECAUSE A LIMITED REPORTS ARE SUBMITTED. AS A RESULT, IT IS FRUSTRATING WHEN SOMEONE SUBMITS A NEGATIVE REPORT OVER A COMMUNICATION OR TRIVIAL ISSUE, WHILE SOMEONE YOU MAY HAVE COMPLETED A MAJOR RENOVATION FOR, NEVER SUBMITS A REPORTS. WHICH IS WHAT I THINK IS MORE IMPORTANT, NEVER THE LESS, OUR RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

Gerald was immediately responsive to my email inquiry, made a timely appointment for which he was punctual, started the project in the agreed upon time frame, was punctual and neat while working, and finished on time. The work was exactly what we had wanted, and dealing with Gerald was a pleasure. He was $5 under budget. Having had MANY disappointing experiences with contractors in the past, my husband and I were shocked and delighted at how smoothly and professionally this job was handled. I highly recommend Gerald's work, and will definitely call him whenever we need a contractor (and with a 100 yr old home, the need is frequent!).

Mr.Nesbit was extremely reliable, and a gentleman from start to finish. He painted two rooms for us and hung some blinds. Two instances of his willingness to go above and beyond 1. I had no time to go look at paint colors, and he came over around 9.30 at night, to drop off a book of paint chips 2. He was not planning to work on a saturday, however I called and asked in the am if we would make an exception, and hang the blinds so we could use the weekend to move stuff in our home- he agreed and then spent several hours finishing the job I have an estimate for exterior painting as well and will probably use him to to this as well, given my experience

Gerald and his crew are amazing; completely trustworthy. I initially hired him to paint one room and based on his suggestions and his professionalism, I hired them to do the other bedrooms. I'm not an easy customer and I change my mind often, but Gerald was patient and his crew took everything in stride. They did a great job on the upstairs, so, they are now doing the first level - and again, the honesty is just great. I have plaster walls and Gerald was upfront about the expertise in this area (this is uncommon, so, when you find a person with ethics, you do appreciate it). The bedroom looks beautiful and I am sure I will be just as happy with the downstairs. I appreciate their hard work. Gerald and his team show up on time every day with no issues and I trust them. I can't thank Angie's List enough for having this service. I had been looking for someone that I could trust and could give me a fair price for quite sometime. In addition to that, being able to find a crew I could trust in my home and Queen City Construction was the perfect answer. I recommend this company and I don't give out compliments easily. Gerald has a strong network that he relies upon if he doesn't have the answer to a problem, again, old fashioned morals. Thank you, Queen City, for living up to my expectations.

The work on his website looked very similar to what I wanted. Even if you are unable to schedule an appointment, a call back or a quick email is nice. I didn't call a million contractors at once to get a lot of bids. I wanted to select the ones who had done similar work in my area. I ended up getting three estimates, and in the end, went with the most expensive one, but he was very quick to call and email. When you give people keys to your house for a month, you want to know you can get in touch with them!

Response from Queen City Construction
NOT REMEMBERING THIS CUSTOMER, I ASKED ANGIE'S LIST TO VERIFY THE ABOVE POSTING. IN THE PAST, WE HAVE GOTTEN PHONE CALLS AND/OR MAIL FROM ANOTHER QUEEN CITY CONSTRUCTION. THE RESPONSE THAT HE GAVE ANGIE’S LIST WAS THAT WE DID SPEAK AND WE EVEN DISCUSSED VARIOUS CABINETS. HE WANTED TO USE IKEA AND THAT I WASN’T A FAN OF IKEA CABINET (WHICH IS TRUE). I DON’T KNOW HOW IT TURNED INTO WHAT HE POSTED (WHERE WE NEVER SPOKE OR RESPONDED TO HIS EMAILS AND PHONE CALL) FROM WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED. THE PREMISE BEHIND ANGIE’S LIST IS THAT IT GIVES CUSTOMERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO POST/RATE THE SERVICE OR PRODUCT OF A COMPANY. UNFORTUNATELY, ONE CAN’T EVALUATE THE PERSON WHO IS WRITING THE POSTING, YOU WOULD THINK THAT HE WOULD BE UNBIASED AND FAIR: WHICH IN THIS CASE, HE WASN’T. HE WROTE NO OTHER POSTING BUT OUR OWN: NONE ON THE CONTRACTOR WHO COMPLETED THE KITCHEN RENOVATION NOR THE TWO OTHER CONTRACTORS HE RECEIVED ESTIMATES FROM. THERE IS NO POSTING ABOUT THE STORES AND HIS EXPERIENCE BUYING CABINETS, APPLIANCES, AND TILES. I WOULD THINK THAT HE (AND YOU FOR THAT MATTER) WOULD BE MORE INTERESTED IN THE WORK THAT IS ACTUALLY DONE. I AM GLAD THAT ANGIE'S LIST GIVES MORE WEIGHT TO A REPORT THAT WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED.
