I appreciate you kind words, Although I have not work for you yet. If we do a project in the future, I need you to know it may be hard to work for someone who is an engineers things for a living. Engineers have a tendency to want things done the way they think it should be done in their heads. This can often lead to attempts to take control of the project. Promise me you will allow me to do my job and trust the process and the person you have hired? That's all I ask

Description of Work: I cannot say enough about Jim and the quality of his work. I hired him to frame in a new closet and create baseboard and trim around the Windows and doorways in my 100 year old house. Jim copied the original woodwork in other rooms and did such an incredible job that I have had people completely fooled as to which is original to the house and which trimwork was just added. Jim showed up on time each day and finished the job several days ahead of schedule. His work is flawless and he is just a genuinely nice guy - enthusiastic about his work and meticulous - and very neat (he cleaned up his work each night and did not leave me a mess to contend with!). His prices were competitive and his work is flawless - I would hire him again in a heartbeat!

The doors and windows were installed with precision and care. I am very happy with his service on those jobs. Unfortunately, the kitchen install did not go as well. He left the kitchen job half way through without explanation. I was extremely disappointed in his lack of patience with me when I was more than patient with his strange work schedule of 3-5 hr days, 3- 4 days a week. A project that should have been completed in 2-3 weeks took three months and was not complete. I am very disappointed. Please note that the emails below, which I did not give Jim permission to release, help support my position. More importantly, the emails do not not include all of his responses and his numerous emails cancelling or postponing his scheduled work days Shame on YOU Jim!!.

Please read the emails sent to me by this customer. I do not wish to disparage her. But I could not continue and walked away from money in order to do it. Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2012 13:17:06 -0700 Member, I am doing the best work I can with your best interests in mine. Having said that.................You owe me nothing. I wish we could have finished your job. I hope you find someone competent to help you. We do love you and want to remain friends. Please let that happen. Jim ________________________________________ Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:28:42 -0400 Are you serious? I cant believe you are going to walk away from this after all weve been through together. You obviously have been harboring bad feeling for me and this job to react so strongly. What made you feel that I thought you were incompetent? I can understand if you are stressed due to your health or any other personal issues, but I am too. I thought you understood that. You said husbands and wives get divorced over remodel projects. What would make you think that we cant have differences and remain friends in our business and personal life. We all have to own our feelings and get through the tough stuff. I want you to think about this and get back to me tomorrow after you;ve thought about it more. I would like to put this behind us. I dont want this to end like this. Member Sent: Monday, August 20, 2012 12:18 PM Jim- I just wanted to check one more time to see if you have reconsidered? I wish you would just be honest with me. I dont have a clue what caused you to walk away like this. Is it your health problems? stress? dislike of me? did you take on too much? I just can not image that you would walk away like this without a better reason than you didnt like me telling you what needs to be corrected. Please at least tell me that it wasnt just that. Did you feel unappreciated? I told you I appreciated all that you did. I know you and I are looking at this situation very differently. I would like to hear your side. I can meet you somewhere neutral to discuss this situation if youd rather not have your views expressed in writing. I am harboring some feelings that are making me very uncomfortable and, whether you come back or not, Id like to at least leave the situation with some peace of mind. Member Sent: Monday, May 14, 2012 7:33 PM Subject: RE: Home Projects Jim- I'm sorry If I left you feeling like I was dissatisfied with your quote. I became a bit overwhelmed walking through the store, thinking about all the other updates I need to do. My bad. I think your labor costs are reasonable and I appreciate all the time you've spent with me. I would like to counter your offer for the kitchen. I'm willing to pay $1400 for the labor on the kitchen cabinets with the appliance/plumbing installation. I agree that I will get other contractors to do the walls and install the countertops. I also want you to install the windows and interior/ exterior trim. I trust your expertise and I'm sure I wont be disappointed. Once we agree to the price, Id like you to still come over Wednesday with the cabinet layouts and your rewritten proposal. Please don't take my indecisiveness personally. Im excited about starting the projects as well. Still havent found a painter yet. Need to work on that. Let me know what time you want to pick up the windows so i can call them and have them move the items to the front of the store. thanks :) Member e: Sun, 22 Jul 2012 17:24:37 -0700 Jim- Change of plans. I am not going to have the deck built. I just want movable wood steps from the back of the patio door. We are going to put a concrete pad in the back of the house sometime in the future. The materials for the composite deck with the vinyl railings was $3000, and I dont want a wood deck, so Ive decided the best choice is just stairs. Sorry about the changes. I will order the materials for the stairs tonight and rent a power washer for tomorrow since my brother in law's washer is broken. At least you can start on the front porch tomorrow and possibly the stairs if I get the supplies. Im going to take dimensions of the front porch to the home depot to see if I can order railings. Mike and I will work on emptying the kitchen cabinets tonight and all day tomorrow so you can start demo on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. Again, sorry for the changes. Thanks!! :) Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2012 20:19:50 -0400 Hi Jim- Hope you had a great weekend. We will not be home tomorrow morning because we have to go to my Mom's house to set up her new hospital bed. If you need to come over to work on spackling, we should be home by 2pm. I am leaning towards not using wallpaper on the ceiling but I am ok on the crown molding. Call me in the morning and leave a message so I know if you are coming in the afternoon. Thanks!!

Jim went with me to order the door directly from the distributor. This made me feel good as he was able to guide me on getting the best value. At the time I really wanted a custom wood door, but it was very expensive so I ended up going with Vynil but feeling good about it. For the storm door installation Jim had to reschedule once, the first time for a conflict with another job and the second time because his van broke down. He was finally able to install it and the installation look very nice. He had to move the piston to the high side of the door because it did not fit within the door frame on the bottom. On doing this the screen tore, but he quickly told me how to contact Anderson to have a free replacement screen sent to me. He offered to come and change the screen but I decided to do it myself. For the sliding door the installation went as scheduled. Jim was able to coordinate with the carpenter building the stairs from another company. Jim explained to me how he did his work, including the cuts needed to frame the door. I had questions about sealing and framing of the bottom of the door and he explained to me that extra cutting was needed in the bottom to accommodate the framing. There had to be some finishing touches on the door after the stairs went in. This took some rescheduling but it was finally done.
Description of Work: Installation of a Anderson hidden screen storm door on an old frame. Removal of old windows and replacing them with a sliding door. The door had to be framed and sealed.

Hired to add side sections to a bookcase style headboard. We were precise in what we wanted built and how it would attach to the bed frame. He changed what we wanted. Claimed it was a better design. His reasons for doing it his way, in actually, were why it shouldn't have been done in that fashion. He did not match the color properly and the way it was construction it would not attach to the bed frame. He would not understand how easy it would be to attach correct the problem. At that point we terminate our association.
Description of Work: Added side sections to a double bed headboard so it could be used with a King size bed. The headboard was a bookcase style. Therefore the sections had both depth and width. He returned the headboard with sections added. They were not the what we wanted, the color did not match the original headboard. The way it was designed it would not attach to bed frame.

I completed this work for Member a year ago, her Husband ( a retired school teacher) is writing this report about me for reasons that only he can justify. I feel Member has always been very satisfied with the headboard work. Member never wanted the project done and was being extremely adversarial throughout the course of the work. I could see this was a situation where the Wife wanted to preserve the bed (because of its value to her) and the Husband was protesting because (it had no value to him) and he felt it was a waste of time and money since no one could perfectly match the existing work. Member is a very sweet and caring woman. I decided to do what she asked me despite their disagreement. Member is also a retired school teacher and paid for the project with her own money. After detailed discussions with Member we worded her contract this way: The new wood work will not match the old (because it was a veneer paper finish and that I would be building the new portions in solid wood and veneer plywood. The contract also clearly stated that “a matching stain was not possible”. This was done as a protection to me as the contractor, so that Member could not protest the final results of her project. There was no misunderstanding as to these facts at anytime and it was the expected outcome. The head board is a free standing headboard more than 12" deep and weighs about 30 lbs. It has shelves and really is a “furniture piece” like a dresser. Fastening it to the metal of the bed frame was something Member insisted on at the time of payment, but was never stated in the contact. I was paid in full on delivery By Member. It was his check! Even after being paid in full, I wanted to make Member happy to. A few days later I bought materials to fasten the free standing furniture to the bed frame and I emailed Member (who gladly accepted my proposal) and made a date the following week to install it. A few days later He contacted me and clearly communicated that Member was pleased with the work and he and She did not want me to do anything more and asked me to please not come over. I returned the materials A year later I get this review. If the outcome was not expected……………….. and the work was done anyway that I wanted it done as Member is NOW Claiming………………..Why did Member give me a “C” on his report?

After spending months on converting the 3rd floor with a unique shape (many unique angles were kept), we know we needed a detail carpentry expert. In terms of skill, there is no one who could have done the job better. Jim was presented with a very difficult job, and he responded with mature mastery as well as joy in his craft. Jim had exceptional attention to detail complemented by the ability to harmoniously execute the entire room. His professionalism and communication skills are remarkable. Jim spent significant time taking solid initial measurements and mutually constructing a work agreement. He was prompt and on-time every day. When he needed more workshop time based on the job's demands, he promptly communicated progress via email, and provided an updated work schedule. His price was a great value, especially considering he did everything. Even with so many gifts, Jim is humble and easy to work with. We already are hiring him for additional projects, and give him our highest recommendation.
Description of Work: Finished wood was created (milled, shaped, stained, constructed) and installed on the recently converted third floor of our home, approximately 350 sq. ft. This included: trim at carpet level for entire room, trim around two standard doors, trim around two custom knee-wall storage doors, three custom built-in bookcases with adjustable shelves, trim and coverings for wall cavity plates (spanning two sides of room), 21ft wall-length window seat with six underneath storage cubicles, trim and caps on stairwell, trim at stair level, handrails in stairwell and landing, trim around two full-size doors, trim around two previously installed custom knee-wall doors (including coat treatments on these doors), and trim on three windows with sill caps. All such finished wood was to be tied in together continuously throughout the room. Many significant details were included. In particular, tie-ins between structures featured a beautiful late 1800s design based on Jim's previous experience. Throughout, the material used was solid oak, with several coats of wood oil treatment (golden oak color). At our preference, Jim selected, transported, cut, and stained all materials. All initial cutting/building was done in his own workshop. Any onsite cuts were done outside the home, more than two floors down from the installation site. Jim courteously cleaned the work area every day.

I found Jim Andrews on Angie's List. I emailed him and received an answer within one day. We set up the date of April 27, 2012 for Jim to come out and take a look at what I required done. He said it was a "doable" thing. He gave me an estimate of $150.00. I accepted, asked if he needed a deposit, which he declined. This gave me great confidence in him as most construction outfits will ask for a deposit and you never hear from them again. He arrived for this appointment exactly on schedule. The install date was May 7, 2012. He arrived on that date exactly on schedule. He surveyed what he had to do and began to work, measuring again and again. He would take a little here and a little there off the frame, wanting to make sure it was perfect. The air conditioner was put in and I could not have been more pleased. He made sure everything was good. He them cleaned up all of the shavings and made sure the porch was spic and span. He will be coming back to install two entry doors soon. Thanks Jim for everything-especially for my cats!
Description of Work: Jim removed an upstairs bedroom window to install a permanent air conditioner. He brought all of his own equipment-table and saw, hammer, wood, etc. The stairs going to the bedroom are very tall and it makes walking up them quite a challenge. Jim must have gone up and down those at least 50 times if not more without one complaint! He measured over and over again until he got it just right. He put in the air conditioner which would have been impossible for me to do. Jim made sure the air conditioner was working properly. After consulting with my father, who was also very impressed with his work, and I , he chalked around the window then added additional insulation to insure a perfect fit. He went above what I ever expected. In general, I can be a very "high expectations" kind of person. Every step of the way, Jim made you feel like you were family. Not one thing did I find fault with-everything he did and said could not have pleased me more, which is a difficult thing to do! I made mention of needing two entry doors to be replaced. We discussed that and I decided he is the only man for the job! There was no pressure tactics-it was a whenever you're ready which I loved. Believe me, I intend on getting those done by Jim only! It's not every day you get someone who is prompt with emails, phone, and followups like Jim was. He is a huge answer to a female all-around-carpentry guy! I am sooo glad for Angies List.

I had basement steps that were separating from the wood that goes from the first floor down to the basement (i.e. a small gap was forming on one side of the steps; making it structurally unsound). Jim reattached the wood back to the steps (and reinforced it with screws) and secured the staircase to the basement floor (to avoid the separation from happening again). I was very pleased with the work and the staircase is now good as new!

He gave me a fair estimate and was able to complete all the work over 2 days. Best of all, he was able to start my projects the same week he came out! I would definitely recommended Jim and certainly would not hesitate to use him again.
Description of Work: Initially I had Jim come look at a skylight that had started to leak, but while he was here I had him look at some siding and flashing that needed to be repaired, and install a gutter downspout that was never connected. He was able to seal the skylight, which was leaking due to some work the previous owner of the house had done. He was able to repair the siding that was damaged and install flashing that was missing. He was able to install the downspout, which require cutting a hole in a deck. He made the opening a small as possible which I was very pleased with.

Jim came in for an estimate, then built a backing for the mantel that blended in and held it securely against the brick fireplace. He did careful measurements inside and worked on our front porch. He was unobtrusive and obviously careful. He wasn't able to hang some hanging bookshelves we had requested (no fault of his own - there were limitations on the structure of the house and the way the bookshelves were designed), but he offered some great alternatives like built-in bookshelves that we will be doing at another time. We are extremely satisfied with the work and price. Friendly, professional, capable. We will be hiring Jim again. Thank you :)
Description of Work: We hired Jim to repair our fireplace mantelpiece. We had removed paneling and plaster during a renovation and the mantelpiece was hanging loosely off the fireplace. We asked Jim to fill out the gaps between the mantelpiece and brick, and secure it all to the brick on the fireplace so it can't be pulled down.

I contacted Jim for a estimate on a front entry door, a storm door and a sliding patio doors. He happened to be the third person I asked, and my first experience with an Angie's list recommendation. He deserves all of his excellent reports! He literally saved me $2500 on the front entry door by fixing the lock instead of replacing the entire door system (with sidelites), which is what was recommended by the other 2 contractors. He told me that the door I have is actually a really high quality door, which the other 2 neglected to tell me. He also replaced my front storm door and sliding patio doors. The other two contractors told me that the patio doors were not a standard size and so would cost thousands to replace. JIm managed to replace them with a stock door from Home Depot, at a very reasonable price. The doors look great! He was always prompt and in communication about the jobs. He cleaned everything up. And he is a really nice person to have working on your property: professional, friendly, and aware of what you might want. For example, I left before he had finished installing the doors, and he said (without my asking) that he would secure the place when he was done. My only hesitation in giving him a rave review is that his schedule will become too full. I have a lot of work I am hoping to have him do!
Description of Work: Jim fixed my front entry door, which would not lock, replaced a storm door, and installed sliding patio doors in the back of the house.

Quite frankly I was disappointed in his professionalism. I contacted Jim Andrews via email and he contacted back and said he would call to set up a time to meet. The appointment was for Oct 21st at about 445pm. He called that day and said he had to postpone to Monday at 430pm because the job he was working on took lot longer than anticipated. On Monday we waited till 530pm and called him and got his voice mail. We have not heard from him since. If he couldn't or didn't want to do the work he should have been upfront with us and we would have contacted someone else. As far as I am concerned I am not pleased at all with him. Very unprofessional.

I received this email from the member during the week of October 17th 2011. This is what I received from him. Dear Mr. Andrews, We recently hired a handyman to do some work in our basement, and we are not pleased with the work he did for us. After he left, we came across your name on Angie's list and would like you to look at our basement and see if you can repair the job he botched up. We had a wall of paneling replaced with new paneling after we had that portion of our basement waterproofed. He didn't hang it well and he did a terrible job on the trim. He put down floor tiles that we believe should be replaced and made a mess out of the ceiling tiles and the metal strips that hold the ceiling up. We need someone to fix the work he did. Please give us a call to discuss this. The Members I wrote back the member these words: Hey Member, I can look at your project one day next week after Monday and then try to see what I can do. If that works..............let me know. Can I get the address of the project? Thanks for the opportunity. Jim Andrews The member's wife wrote me back at a later date: Thanks for responding. We live at (address). Yes, you can come and look at the property after 4:30 any evening this week. You can call me at ##-####. Thanks. One day this week, I received a message on my phone that said. Hi, jim, this is the member, are you still coming, its now 5:30 and we wondering if you are still coming. END OF MESSAGE.

Emailed Jim Andrews after getting his name from Angie's List. He emailed me back immediately and stated that he would perform the job. He quoted me a price of $150.00, which I thought was fair considering it looked like it was quite complicated. Jim came out and looked at the materials involved and there were missing parts. Jim had to improvise in order to make the basketball net secure on the roof. He ended up having to use metal bars to attach it to my garage. He did a phenominal job in a timely manner and charged the quoted price plus a tiny bit more for the materials he had to buy. He was professional, punctual, kind, and reliable. You couldn't aske for a better handyman or carpenter. I would highly recommend Jim Andrews. He is a dying breed!!
Description of Work: Bought a basketball hoop two years ago from Dick's Sporting Goods. This particular basketball net was to be mounted on top of my garage roof. After seeing all the parts and pieces that it came with and the complications, we decided that we needed a professional to install it.

Jim answered my online request the same day and called the next day to schedule an appointment for an estimate of the work I wanted done. He emailed me 4 times before the appointment (which was scheduled for a week later) for more information, and he and his wife, Linda, showed up promptly on the day we had scheduled. (Linda has previous experience as an installer of mini-blinds at a national hardware chain.) I already had the mini-blinds, curtains and curtain rods and after looking through the apartment and taking measurements, they gave me a very reasonable estimate to do all the work, and I decided right then that I wanted them to do the job. They got started right away, patiently working around the mess of my apartment (we had just moved in a few days earlier) and when they were done, everything looked great and I was very pleased with their work. I told them during the course of their work that I had decided to buy a couple more panels of drapes for the living room, and Jim emailed me soon after they left to ask me to let them know when the additional drapes came in so they could come back and put them up for me. I also mentioned while they were installing everything that I had some boxed, assembly-required furniture I needed assembled and asked Jim if he did that type of work, which he does, and when they came back in a couple of days to put up the additional drapes, they took the 5 (heavy) boxes of furniture with them. Jim assembled everything except the 2 shelving units and returned all the items 2 days later. I was very happy with the job he did on everything as well as the very reasonable price he charged me, and I'm already thinking of other work I would like Jim to do around my apartment. Without a doubt, I would recommend Jim for this type of work without hesitation.
Description of Work: Jim installed mini blinds, curtain rods and curtains/drapes throughout my apartment and also a wall-mounted cabinet in the bathroom and a heavy, large-framed picture in one of the bedrooms. Additionally, he picked up from my home 5 pieces of boxed, assembly-required furniture, assembled a desk with hutch, a kitchen cart with a drawer and a "sofa" table and return delivered all furniture (2 shelving units were not assembled after seeing the quality of the materials) to my home 2 days later.

Description of Work: If I lived in Buffalo instead of Michigan, I would hire Jim Andrews at the "drop of a hat." My brother, who lives in Ohio, and I were seeking estimates on some odd jobs at our Mother's house. We found Jim via Angie's list, and he met with our sister at the house within a couple of days, sending a complete and fair estimate. In the meantime, my sister's two sons stepped up and said they felt they could do most of the work and save the family some money. We hadn't asked them because we felt they just wouldn't have time. Jim was very gracious in all of this and wished us well. He had already made arrangements for some assistance on the various jobs, and he was on top of the project. Based on our experience, we would give him a high recommendation.

From start to finish, Jim's service was great! He showed up on time, performed the work and kept in touch with how it was going. A true professional!
Description of Work: Jim removed a rotted threshold and replaced it as well as a door adjacent to it. He also removed worn out vinyl in my entrance way and replaced that as well. Jim replaced an interior office door and added new hardware. He also fixed two other exterior doors. I was very happy with his service and his promptness! I would definitely contact him again.

Overall, I could not have asked for a better performance from any contractor that I have dealt with, and that's many of men. Jim gets 2 thumbs up!
Description of Work: I wanted to have a show kitchen and bought my cabinets at IKEA. Jim put them together and installed them. He had to alter them a lot to make them fit to our design. Jim went out of his way to make sure every detail was perfect. He also did many other projects that I asked of him for help. He is truly an all-around professional carpenter. I was so impressed that I hired him at my place of employment where again he exceeded my expectations.
