I am so sorry you did not have the opportunity to meet with one of our estimators. We mistakenly made the appointment with you for Labor Day, and unfortunately, this is a Holiday for our company. We attempted to reschedule with you, but you hung up on the receptionist. We would be more than happy to reschedule with you and do have Saturday and evening appt available. We wish you all the best with your upcoming project. Sincerely, HPM Carpentry

Description of Work: We have been using HPM for over 3 yrs now. They have completed various projects for us. For them, no job is too big or too small. They have provided excellent service for such jobs as; painting the exterior (using George Apap, their parent company), remodeling bathrooms and kitchens and smaller jobs like adding a screen door, replacing interiors doors and completing finish carpentry. They even installed a copper ceiling in our office. All of their employees are extremely professional and curteous. Our projects tend to be out of the ordinary and we rarely use drawn up plans or architects. Brian has always done an amazing job of translating our ideas into a practical final product. We usually request that Caesar be involved in the construction. He is an extremely talented builder and tiler. He is pleasent to be around and is calm in every situation (very important during any renovation). The best part about HPM is that whenever I have had any concern at all about how something is going or the apperence is not what we had hoped for, they have perfected the job even when at times it has required major adjustments to the plan.

Description of Work: HPM remodeled our 1,500-sf basement. We had an architect draw up basic plans to get a permit, but HPM's team expanded a lot on that. We wanted a finished space that matched the feel and quality of the ground floor of our early 1900s farmhouse. HPM delivered. One of the biggest contributions they made to the success of the project was their suggestion that we close up the old basement staircase and cut a new staircase in a virtually-unused part of the ground floor. Without that idea, we would have been stuck with a cramped, poorly-lit staircase off the kitchen. With the new location of the stairs, HPM was able to build a pantry right off the kitchen. HPM's team then took a labyrinthe of filthy rooms, low-hanging ductwork, crooked walls and floors, 2-foot deep windows, and narrow doorways, and transformed them into a stunning destination. The basement now matches the rest of the house. HPM jack-hammered the thick foundation walls where there was an old, small door to the outside, creating space for a new, full-sized entry door. They painstakingly hand-poured a new concrete floor that is actually level. Equally paintstaking and time-consuming was framing the new walls (previously the basement had just concrete foundation walls) so they are straight. They came up with creative ways to deal with the narrow doorways and ridiculously deep windows. Their team doesn't just do what they are told or what the plans say; they think about a project and listen to the homeowner and make suggestions for what to do based on their experience. We frequently printed pictures from the Houzz website, showed them to HPM, and asked, "Can you do it like this?" They always said they could, and they always did. HPM uses a great network of subs - HVAC, plumbing, etc. The skill of HPM's carpenters is superior. From hand-crafting a new door with complicated panels to match an 80-year old door that we had to discard, to building a perfect new pantry with drawers and shelving based on a hand-scratched sketch we did, to putting up beautiful crown mouldings that begin and end at odd angles, to installing several types of cabinets where every door, every shelf, and every drawer is even and level, these guys did it all. As you can probably tell, we could not be more pleased with this company. We highly recommend them.

After Hurricane Irene, my roof developed a small leak near the front door. Thinking it was possibly from the skylight near that area, I sealed the flashing around the skylight myself. However, this didn't stop the leak, and after several more attempts to find it myself, I finally contacted George Apap, Inc. An employee named Brian came out to the house and examined the area. It was difficult to determine where the leak was coming in as there were no visible areas of damage on the roof; and since I don't have an attic we were unable to examine the roof from underneath without tearing up my entire living room ceiling (which I obviously didn't want to do). Brian initially suggested redoing the sealing around the glass of the skylight (which I had neglected to do when I resealed the flashing), and completed this the next day. The skylight unfortunately turned out not to be the location of the leak, but Brian came back and re-tested the area below the skylight with the hose. Since this showed the water was definitely coming in from that area, Brian suggested two options: I could have them reseal the shingles in that area, which would be cheaper but might not fix the problem, as we had not located the exact location of the leak, or we could tear up the whole area down to the beams and redo it. Wanting to try the cheaper option first, I asked him to try the sealing. That still did not fix the problem, so I called back and asked them to rip it up and redo it. They scheduled the appointment and sent out two employees to do the job. Originally they had planned on redoing a 6' x 8' area, which is what we had narrowed the location of the leak down to, but when they started tearing it up they found the problem almost immediately and only had to reshingle about a 3' x 5' area. Problem turned out to be that when the roof originally was put on, the builders had put a nail too close to the edge of the shingle, which was causing any water that slipped underneath to travel down the nail hole and accumulate above the living room ceiling. The job was completed in a few hours and I have had no problems since. I would definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: Sealing around skylight flashing, sealing numerous shingles, rip up 3' x 5' section of roof and replace weatherproofing and shingles.

This was a remarkable experience. Our screened-in back porch roof has leaked off and on for about 12 years. We had a repair done about 8 years ago and this held until after this winter's snow, when it began leaking consistently during every rain. We had 3 bids. The first two gave us a price to replace the porch roof. Brian of Apap came and looked very carefully at exactly where it was leaking. He went upstairs and outside onto the roof to examine the pitch and condition of the windows and clapboard overlooking the roof. After about 45 minutes of careful analysis he proposed that he thought the leak was coming from a breach in the clapboard on the side of one of the dormer windows. He emphasized that he might be wrong, but recommended thaf he thought they could make this repair and that we did NOT need to replace the whole roofing. And while neither of us thought the leak was coming from the skylights on the roof, he said he would also seal around the skylights for good measure. They did the job a couple of weeks later and I've waited over a month before filing this report. He got it right!!!! After 18 hours of hurricane Irene's rain, I am confident that we are safe in saying, in a matter of speaking, Brian nailed it! I would use this company for roofing again in a minute and I highly recommend them. I did have to call the Apap office a number of times to get an expedited formal quote and get the work scheduled, but they were very prompt once I got the formal quote.
Description of Work: Removed clapboard, sealed area underneath, and placed new clapboard on the side of a dormer window above our low-pitch screened in back porch to fix the leaking porch roof. The roof is approximately 14' by 24'. Re-sealed around 4 skylights, 3 on the porch roof, one over the den.
