The provider said that I would have a complete written assessment and individual prices for 8 projects within 10 days. I received a complete contract and prices for each of the projects of which I selected 4 projects to go forward with. We set a date and the crew came on time, were very professional and completed the projects within the time period given. Also, they were very good about cleaning up after completion of the work.
Description of Work: The energy audit of my home was very complete from basement to attic and took 2 hours.

Thorough energy audit of plenty of explanations. Subsequent work was performed in a professional, but friendly manner. LIPA rebates came within the time frame and dollar amount that was originally announced (cutting the out of pocket expenses in half).

Brian was on time and professional. I was told, however, that I did not have any insulation and shown the thermal camera footage of where the walls met my roof, which was dark blue. I was provided a quote of $6830 to insulate my walls, attic, and basement. I got a second from Arctic Insulation and Windows, another Angie's List company, and was shown that I do have insulation and he could 'top-up' the wall insulation for $300. Needless to say, I did not have BrightHome work on my house.

Very smoothly. The crew was great and cleaned up daily. The improvement in the quality of the home is significant
Description of Work: They completed a home energy audit in December 2011, then we contracted with them to perform insulation services. They helped us thru the process of applying for rebates/grants from state agencies to enable us to save over $5k on the work. Our house is over 70 years old and was in dire need of insulation. It has made such a significant improvement in our home

The company scheduled a full week for the work, but spent just 3 half days to perform the work. My first serious warning signs came when the project supervisor, Tim, reported to me that a number of things that were in the price proposal were both especially difficult and not necessary to complete- specifically, insulation of cheek walls in the finished attic, ceiling insulation in the coldest room in the house (the kitchen) and insulation in a small extension on the house that was missing exterior sheathing (and therefore, I was told, could not support the blown insulation that was being used without a $6,000 change order.) In addition, Tim made a "field change" in the crawl space in the kitchen, the coldest room in the house, choosing to insulate the foundation walls, rather than the dirt crawl space floor, as it was easier work in an extremely confined space. Tim told me "just make sure you don't tell the state auditor when they come to inspect the work." After the first winter, even though it was mild, we knew that the work was inadequate. I contacted the company to ask that they come and re-inspect to see what additional work could be done to improve comfort in the coldest spaces, especially our kitchen, which is located in a one story 300 sq. ft. extension to our house. It took several months to get the company to return my calls. When they did, I was told that there was a split in ownership and the former owner and other staff members that I had worked with and was trying to reach, including Tim and Grant, were no longer working with the company. The remaining owner, Mike Brown, agreed to come out, along with an inspector, Brian Edgar, to take a look at the conditions. Mr. Brown and Bryan came out and conducted a through re-inspection - including a new blower door test. A few weeks later, Bryan came back to sit with my wife and me for over an hour to discuss the conditions and I was extremely impressed with his attentiveness. He provided a detailed, and candid, explanation for the problems we continued to face. He indicated that the company was not satisfied with the work that was performed previously and several of the decision that were made by Tim at the time. He indicated that the company would come out to redo a number of the insulation and air sealing items at its own cost. He also indicated recommended an additional $5,000 of work, including insulation of attic cheek walls and kitchen ceiling. I have been trying for almost a year now to get Mr. Brown to perform the work that he and his team tell me are required to improve only the most dire problems (last winter my kitchen temp got as low as 42 degrees when outside temps fell to the teens!) I have called on multiple occasions, left several emails and have received no response.
Description of Work: The company conducted an energy audit soon after I moved into my newly purchased 1890 Victorian home in 2011. I researched several vendors and selected this company, in part, due to their promise to provide a detailed, very specific audit and their representation that their technicians were relentless about finding, and addressing drafts. The owner of the company, Ed Schwarz, identified himself as "a national expert" in historic homes and said he would himself conduct the audit. The day of the audit, the owner showed up and spent about 30 minutes in our home, then indicated that he had to go to a funeral and would not do the audit himself. When I received the audit, 90 percent was pro forma recommendations (that can be obtained from any web search on energy star- like replacing all bulbs with CFL... like I really need to pay for that advice!) The recommendations for work were largely all related to adding insulation, which was absolutely necessary, so I contracted with the company to do the insulation and air sealing work. The State of NJ made available $13,000 of low interest loans for the work and this was the amount of work recommended by the company. I spent a considerable amount of time in advance of the audit documenting the high priority areas with greatest drafts and coldest places. I provided this report to Mr. Schwartz to be very clear about my expectations and requirements. He assured me that they would take care of all the items I identified.

The office and ownership that completed the audit and work is no longer in business. My company has attempted to resolve a problem we did not create. We have gone back to (removed member name) home two times to attempt to solve his problem, the second time as recently as last week. We have spent over $4000 beyond the original work scope for a defunct company error.

Brighthome arrived and quickly went to work by closing and sealing all ducts in order to pressurize the house to look for leaks. they performed a series of tests over a 5 hour period looking for heat loss through all the walls and windows. they also did a leak test of the heating and cooling system. They examined all the duct work for leaks and drafts. When they finished they provided a report which was sent a week or so later with full description of their findings and pictures of thermal images of suspected heat loss and cooling loss. the report was very detailed and thorough and then they provided cost estimates for repair. I did not order any of the repairs as i found the costs too high against the ROI of cost of energy lost. in other words the repairs were $15,000 if I chose to do everything and if you calculate the cost of oil at $2500 per year and the savings of say 20% I might save $500 per year on my oil bill against an expensive repair. so for me it did not work out economically but for others it may... but they were very professional and punctual and in fact I recommended them to a friend and he did hire them to make the repairs...

Overall the process was fairly smooth. Scheduling went well. Tom performed the energy audit, touring and inspecting the house inside and out. I peppered him with questions along the way, and he provided good answers. One downside was the lack of a mold evaluation; this was highlighted on the Angie's List Big Deal coupon but BrightHome apparently does not perform. It was clear from the inspection of our attic that insulation is our biggest weak point. Tom pointed out something we can do ourselves to improve the environmental quality of our house, such as routing gutter downspouts well clear of the house to reduce the potential for basement humidity/water intrusion. A few days after the audit Tom sent me a detailed report of the audit, including recommended services/upgrades, their cost, and how much the expected savings are. We haven't decided to take action on their recommendations yet, but they are reasonable and BrightHome will be our first call on this.
Description of Work: Performed an energy audit of out house. They collected the amounts we pay for electricity and gas, and inspected the house including the attic. A door blower test was not possible due to the size of our door (too wide).

From the moment that Nick came to give us an estimate I got the impression that he (and in turn they) really were passionate and cared about what they were doing. The job lasted three days and in those days the workers arrived on time, covered any area that they might get dirty, did there job and cleaned up after themselves. They quickly answered any questions I had during the work and upon the final energy audit my homes efficiency went up 20% so I am really looking foward to those lower heating and cooling bills. I would highly recommend Brighthome to anyone that asked

I live in an old, leaky, un-insulated lake house that was originally designed as a seasonal cottage but was at some point converted into year-round living. We have a fireplace and electric heat. My heating bills the last few winters have been outrageous. BrightHome came and performed their energy audit to help me figure out what would be the most cost-effective way to fix the heating drain. They identified areas where adding insulation would give the biggest bang for the buck, discussed the different types of insulation that could be used, and the environmental/air quality impacts of each. We also located several areas where additional small quick fixes could be made to stop energy drain, such as gaps around the chimney, and a cracked window I hadn't noticed. I was pleased with the service and with their suggestions. The follow-up conversation afterward was also thorough and professional.

This was a pleasure to have done. The tech installed a fan system in the front door, and adjusted it to produce a specific negative pressure (vacuum) in the house. Then, he went around the house, basement to 3rd floor, with a thermal imaging camera, and showed me where there was significant leakage of outside air. One trouble spot was the sill-plate between the foundation and the walls. He suggested getting a foam-in-place installation to fill the sill pockets. (My next-door-neighbor had that done, and it really helped his heating bill.)

BrightHome Energy Solutions did a good job.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's Big Deal to get an audit of the energy we use and how much each unit was producing. We had a unit that needed to be replaced and they gave us an estimate for different types of replacements. They had a whole write up in a little booklet. I did not pay anything extra. It went okay; the guy knew what he was talking about. I learned a lot while we were talking. I thought that the report was high level and really not all that useful, other than they wanted to sell me a very expensive insulation installation. I was able to get another vendor for much less. Another thing that was a little irritating was they were very booked up when I bought the deal and had to wait several months. I would not use them again.
