Went great from start to finish. Tom the auditor is thorough and explained everything to us about how our home worked and we could be more comfortable. The workers who did the installation were polite, clean and hard workers. Even in the near 100 degree temperatures. Our house feels great!

It didn't happen. I did not do the recommended work in attic that they proposed
Description of Work: They came and did what seemed to be a very professional and thorough job, I never got around to doing the work they proposed, but when I showed my local contractor, a year or maybe even two later, he said it was not necessary.

I'm sorry that you did not complete the work suggested by our Building Performance Institute certified Energy Efficiency Specialist back in 2011. I just finished reviewing our scientific analysis of your home. We spent over 3 hours in your home and another 8 hours modeling and developing a unique energy efficiency plan for your home. Your home's air changes per hour are more than double the ASHRAE standards for your home. Imagine keeping your window up year round 20". That is the amount of unnecessary air flow entering your home. Additionally, our unique work plan would have reduced your energy consumption for heating by 36%. I cannot not disagree more with your local contractor that you did not need the work suggested by our scientific testing and analysis.

They could have completed everything. They were supposed to get back with me with a whole bunch of information after the evaluation was done and it just died. They did the audit and called to tell me what they found. Then they were supposed to say, if you do these things or try these products or whatever and that never happened.

This was a big deal purchase and it was fine. It could have been better, but it was adequate. They did say they would patch up the walls and we would have everything ready just to be painted, but that didn't happen so we had to have the walls sanded down before they could be painted. Initially they were very responsive, then someone came out and looked at things and gave me an estimate. Then they followed up with the individuals who were to do the actual work. I just found it hard to communicate with them. It did not make the process that much easier; it made it harder.

This review is inaccurate and the member is attempting to get free work. We fulfilled our contract which called for two coats of spackle; painting to be completed by others. We were clear along that our work was not to a paint finished standard. Copies of the contract and workscope are available for review.

Price was in the mid range of the quotes I received. Nick (Project Lead) was very professional, helped prioritize options for work that needed to be done. Crew was on time and organized. They protected the finished space effectively. Installation looks good and they completed some additional work (repairing wood platform in attic) that was not specified.

The only thing bright home recommended was that they cut holes in our walls and blow insulation into them. That was the ONLY recommendation they had for an unrenovated lakeside cottage. really? there's nothing else???
Description of Work: The provider came as part of the nyserda energy audit. The audit was very one dimensional and didn't provide much detail at all. The point of the audit was so that bright home could then sell us their services.

Dealing with there representative was the worst part beside them not getting the work done right. Required multiple visits to get the work done right. He was a kind of person who has no business being in actual contact with a customer. He was brusk, rude, arrogant, short, and extraordinarily unprofessional. They refused to deal with me. They subcontracted some of it out and even though the contractors, very clearly between me and them, they have refused to take any responsibility for the ongoing problems that I have with there work. The subcontractors were part of the package from the beginning and I have nothing but phenomenal things to say about them. If it wasn't for them I would probably already been in court with Bright Home. They're wonderful. They have probably lost double the amount of money that they have made on this particular subcontract work for them because whatever Bright Home refused to do they stepped up and they're very, they put a lot of time in there reputation and there name, but ultimately it is Bright Homes problem with me.

The workers were very friendly & professional. Clean up was OK. They did leave a little foam on the siding which I removed with a little effort. I really liked the energy assessment they provided before the job began. It was very thorough.
Description of Work: They insulated our attic and eliminated cold air ingress in between our first and second floors. When we added the second floor to our home, the builder never properly prevented a draft in between the floors. Foam was sprayed in between the joists resting on the foundation.

After moving into our new older home in the middle of winter we were immediately dealing with heating issues including drafts and almost immediate heat loss when the heat was turned on. We struggled to keep the house in the 70s through the winter even with the heat running 24h/day. We also had a pipe freeze in the middle of the house (which I've been told by many plumbers almost never happens) while the heat was running! We hired Brighthome to do the following work: +Dense pack cellulose on all exterior walls +Seal basement rim joists +Air seal and fix insulation in all crawl spaces throughout the house +Fix insulation in garage and finished attic above garage +Insulate unfinished attic +Remove old house fan and seal house fan ducts/vents that were not in use. Nick was extremely easy to work with from beginning to end. Brighthome assisted in all paper work including the financing through NYSERDA and the rebate (also from NYSERDA). Nick was also great at explaining everything that they were doing, why they were doing it and took consideration to fix all the problems we were facing (ice dams, drafts, etc). In total the project took 5 days to complete. The crew came on time everyday and was a pleasure to deal with. Important to note these are all actual Brighthome employees (not subcontractors) so they care about the quality of work. The team went through the entire house and meticulously worked through the many problems that came up in our energy audit report. They were able to complete the work scope 100% and even fixed some problems that were not initially diagnosed. They left the house extremely clean and in some cases (the basement) they left cleaner than it was before the project. Nick warned us there would be some damage to the exterior clapboard from the dense pack insulation. This did turn out to be true but the team did a very good job fixing and patching all the damaged wood. Brighthome is not responsible for painting so are going to fix this part ourselves (not a big job). While we will have to wait for the winter to see the full results, we already noticed improvements. The house takes a lot longer now to match the outside temperature (stays much cooler in the day even without the AC on. I am pretty confident we should have some significant improvement in comfort once the winter rolls around (and hopefully savings too). In terms of the measurable improvement on air tightness, the door blower test improved significantly and is now out of the "severe" range and into a more "moderate' range of air leakage. Our initial blower door test: 6495 cfm50 Final blower door test: 4000 cfm50 Overall we are extremely satisfied with Brighthome, Nick and the entire team that worked on our house. If you are looking for a quality team to improve energy efficiency in your older home, I would highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: We initially met Nick Ricciardelli as part of NYSERDA's free home energy audit - Brighthome was one of the reccomended contractors through the Energize NY program. After doing the free energy audit with Brighthome (highly recommended as this is a zero risk, free report) we decided to take most of the recommendations to improve our home's insulation, air sealing and convert from oil to gas (I will include this part in a separate review once the work is done). This review covers the insulation and air sealing work performed by Brighthome.

BrightHome did only visual inspection, and used out dated fan blower to test efficiency of the house. This was less than optimal, as most of the questions about where my energy was being used/lost wasn't answered. I never received a copy of the report. It was as if some one just went through your house casually browsing and occasionally. The finished by using a fan technology from the 1970's to tell you that it isn't accurate. Over all its a waste of time, effort, and money. The information you get is like the 'captain obvious' commercials, you already know that.
Description of Work: BrightHome was paid to inspect the house for energy consumption and efficiency.

I fully disagree with these comments. Our equipment meets and exceeds the standards set by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) for safety, health and air flow. An audit report was prepared along with suggested work to solve the problems in this home according to BPI, NYSERDA and at that time, LIPA standards. These reports were completed in 2013 shortly after the audit.

Horrible!!! Waste of time.
Description of Work: Bright Home had some mixed reviews compared to other Energy Audit companies in the area. They were one of three companies I planned to call. I had a very productive conversation with the person who answered the phone and moved forward. I was advised the audit would take approx. 3-4 hours and they were scheduling two weeks out. I scheduled the appointment and cleared my afternoon work schedule to be home by 1:00 for the appointment. At 2:15 I called to make sure they were on their way. The very same person I scheduled the appointment with (who I complimented in the first call for turning me from on the fence to making an appointment) was now insisting she never made an appointment with me. I assumed someone (maybe the owner?) in the office would have a care for customer service as I watched my work day vanish for no reason. Completely annoyed by any show of effort to make good of a situation caused by office inefficiency, I asked to speak with the owner. I was told he was not in. I was assured he would call me back that afternoon. 17 days ago!!!! I don't know if the owner shares in this deplorable level of customer service or maybe he was never told by his staff? Either way, I believe there must be better options. I personally would never consider them again.

Really great work and professional service. The operations manager/salesman, Nick, was knowledgeable and candid in his assessment of our insulation situation. Very thorough too. We had three different contractors come over and the only one I had full confidence in was BrightHome, due in large part to Nick's detailed explanation of the science behind insulation work. Highly recommended. Admittedly, it was more than we hoped to spend, but with a project like this I'm of the mind that it's better to pay more for a great job than pay a little for an OK job.
Description of Work: Attic: Removed and disposed of old insulation, air sealed the top vents, removed an old attic fan we had up there and patched hole, insulated whole attic with blown-in cellulose. Basement: Air sealed and insulated rim joist with closed-cell spray foam. Crawl space: Air sealed and insulated rim joist. Installed foam boards over existing insulation bats. Garage wall shared with house: Dense-packed wall with cellulose. Patched holes that were made in the process.

The fellow who came to scope out the work was on time, pleasant, thorough and very knowledgeable. While he was there, I even asked him for his opinion about other items in the house that might need replacing or need additional insulation (fireplace vent and garage doors) and he opined that they were in as good working order as possible and nothing further should be done. The crew of two were on time, courteous, professional, thorough and neat. We couldn't believe they finished all of that work in less than a day. After they finished, no debris was left behind and all floors were vacuumed, including in the attic. Probably one of the better all around experiences we've ever had.
Description of Work: Air sealed the rim joists in unfinished basement with closed cell spray foam. Installed a thermal attic tent around pull down stairs and built a platform around it in our unfinished attic. Replaced weather stripping on three doors. Replaced 2 bathroom vent tubes in attic. Wrapped the boiler and hot water heater pipes.

Considering the age of our house we expected to score very poorly on any energy audit and got this done more as a way to help us find the areas where we could most improve the comfort and efficiency of our house. The audit consisted of a pressure test (which concluded that our house is just barely not the outdoors in terms of air flow and heat loss, but was interesting anyway. The most useful test was the infrared detector which revealed a few actual holes we could patch immediately, and showed us which (few) areas of the house already had some insulation done and could be left alone. We have a better idea of how to proceed with improving our home's efficiency, good ideas on what kind of insulation will most benefit us. I was happy with this provider's services.

Did a very thorough inspection. Presented a written evaluation including recommendations for improvements to existing insulation, air seals, and HVAC equipment. I decided not to proceed due to the relative young life of the installation and the pay back period was beyond the time I expected to own the property. I have since sold the property and moved to Texas. Therefore, I would not reuse their services since I no longer am in their market area.
