Initially, it seemed fine. The foam insulation in the basement- - especially around the rim joist, was very successful. The real problems came with the cellulose, which they spray into cavities. It's very fine stuff, and it got sprayed, all right, and ended up on the first floor, on our bookshelves, everywhere. In addition, they neglected to turn the boiler off while they did their work. As a result, a month later the boiler shut down, because some of the cellulose had been pulled into the chimney and blocked it. That was cleaned out by our furnace people. Then, in the spring, when we wanted to turn the AC on, it turned out that the circulating unit (in the basement) was also clogged and had to be cleaned out. Last straw was when they were backing out of our garage and knocked down half our dogwood tree. They were honest about that, and we were able to wire it back up (using our gardeners), and I'm pleased that the dogwood seems to be all right, amazingly enough. Needless to say, I wouldn't use them again, nor would I recommend them.
Description of Work: We had them do an energy audit on our 120 year old house. Well done, and of course we needed insulation- - especially the basement and the attic. We got half way through the project (the basement) and stopped there.

They did a good job. They worked efficiently and did what they were supposed to do. They also gave us a lot of high energy bulbs at no additional cost. We recommended them to my mother in law who also used their services. She was very happy with the work.

Overall things went okay though I had the feeling I wasn't getting the full story. I asked a lot of questions to understand what I was being told but the answers didn't add up. I'm familiar with the technological principles behind energy audits and didn't find what I was being told added up with what I know. This was particularly the case with the thermo imaging and why certain areas were cold and others weren't. Despite that I might have followed through with some of the auditors suggestions and even used the company except that it took months to get them to reimburse me the cost of the audit since they were paid through a state program. That really turned me off.
Description of Work: We had an energy auditor our home. The contractor walked through the house and took thermo images of the wall and did a blow test.

Purchased this energy audit as a special offering through AL. The first auditor failed to provide a report and the information was apparently lost; I had to contact them to arrange a second audit. A second auditor did visit our home and made recommendations but they did not seem at all cost-efficient. They may be comparable or even superior to other such services, but we did not find the information particularly useful.

Discussions on the scope of work and scheduling we very pleasant and professional (Scott and Nick). The installation team was very diligent, tidy and timely. The team leader (Eddie) did a good job explaining what was going on at all times and addressed any small planning oversights that we encountered promptly and professionally. I also appreciated that, while not part of the scope of work, he came up with and implemented, on his own volition, a better access door to the attic than what was previously there. The quality of the work seems to be very good, the house seems noticeably less drafty and is much much quieter. We're looking forward to seeing how the work performs during the winter. Overall a very good experience.
Description of Work: Brighthome performed an energy audit on our 1950's era home. Following various discussions arising from the audit we retained them to air seal the house and insulate the attic with dense pack cellulose / rigid foam insulation / loose fill cellulose (as appropriate). They also packed cellulose into all the exterior walls of the house.

The guy who came out to assess the work showed professionalism. Once the contract was signed, the response was slow. I called them to inquire about the data/time of the job. Once we agreed on a date/time of the job, that got moved to a different date citing the materials didnt arrive. On the day of the job, the guys did a great job of finishing on time.

Our central AC died about 5 years ago and we decided it was time to do something about that. Also our semi-underground lower bedroom level has mold issues...but what to do? When we learned of the NYState sponsored energy audits, we figured we'd get some expert advice. The actual AudIt took almost 4 hours. house, etc. .He spent the first half talking with us about our needs, how we use heat and cooling in the house. The second half was spent looking into every corner of the house, top to bottom, and then conducting a blower door test to see how and where the house leaks. The result was a long document detailing our house's problems and proposing solutions. We spent a few weeks negotiating over the details of the project..even got a second price for the HVAC side to compare. In the end, BrightHome remained somewhat more expensive but we thought it would be worth it...and I have to say it was. These are the most professional, attentive, detail-conscious, thorough contractors I ever met. If something went wrong (during the work our automatic garage opener stopped working. They fixed it at no charge and no questions) they took immediate responsibility. They are amazingly clean (One day I noticed that someone had tracked a little dirt onto the carpeted stairs. Before I could even think to say anything one of their guys was there vacuuming it up. They worked in the grueling hot attic and not one of them ever got nasty or cursed or did anything but act professionally. They showed up when they said they would and finished in the number of days they projected it would take. A few days later, After a storm one small piece of line cover outside was ajar nd the HVAC guy was here that morning to fix it.So I have to say I am pretty pleased with the experience. And as to their recommendations to solve our problems:The house is so tight now that I ran the dehumidifier for an hour or two and the humidity downstairs dropped from 65% to 47%. I turned it off and the rooms remained cool and dry (go up to 50%rh after a few hours) for the rest of the day.
Description of Work: NYSERDA Energy AuditReplace insulation in attic which was trapping moisture (and becoming moldy)Add attic solar fan (attic was 140degrees and is now under 115)Seal rim joists in attic and crawl spaceInsulate crawl spaceRemove old non-functioning central AC and all ductwork and room ventsInstall Split-system AC/Heat Pump/Dehumidifier system in six rooms

We had the energy audit performed last fall. The person who performed the energy audit was very thorough and knowledgable. He was here about 3 hours, and he had some useful insights. However, he said he needed to have the specific costs for our energy usage in order to give us an accurate analysis and understanding of our costs and potential savings. When we said we did not have that information he asked for our account numbers and said he could access the information. For some reason he was not able to do access CL & ) with the information we gave him. I contacted Scott and he repeated his request for the account passwords. Finally I e-mailed him and told him that I would like a report about the energy deficiencies in the house without the cost analysis.I never heard from him. Therefore I consider the entire experience a waste of time.
Description of Work: Scott was here for 3-4 hours. He did a very thorough study of the house and its energy needs. We discussed his thoughts after he completed his investigation.

yThey did an excellent job all around.. The fact that they make this affordable and rebate available was the deciding factor to have this job done. I know I will recoup on the decrease of my utility bills and have also added important value to my home. If you are considering insulating your home, you should definately have them come out and do an audit first, I learned alot from Brian about the house and what was really necessary and what was not for it to be well functioning and energy efficient. I am very happy. And I feel so much more comfortable in my own house!!
Description of Work: Brian performed a thorough energy audit on my house. My home had many leaks and this was costing me so much money with PSEG and the oil company. The home needed to be insulated and sealed. It took one week. The crew was punctual, worked efficiently and left the place clean before they left.

The work and a later report delivered in person, which took about 45 min to an hour, were extremely helpful and impressive. However I had not checked reviews of the firm by other customers in Angie's list before these events. I did so afterwards, when needing to decide how to proceed with correcting the problems found and was astonished and appalled to see how many severely negative reviews there were. Because of those reviews we have not used them to actually do the reparative work and we are considering whether to get a second energy audit.
Description of Work: The audit was extremely detailed and long, including inspection of several crawl spaces under the house. Air leak testing, evaluation of HVAC, detailed inspection of insulation and leak sources was performed.

I took advantage of the Angies List deal to have a Home Energy Audit. It took a while to arrange the audit and had to be canceled due to weather, which I'm fine with. The chap that turned up was professional and even wore booties around the house, which was great. He performed the audit and explain potential changes that could be done to the house so save money on energy costs including attic insulation, wall insulation etc. The premise would be to take advantage of the Energy Rebates to save up to $5000. I was promised the report within a week and it was received a draft in only 3 days, which I was very please about. The report showed that through additional insulation, weather proofing and sealing we would save up to 22% of our energy saving by only spending $11K, which would give a rebate of $4k. I spoke with the contractor again to go over next steps and was told that he would have to input the information into the Clean Energy System to check everything. The results were that the intended recommendations would only save %16 and therefore only be awarded a rebate of $2500. The thing that vexes me is that the audit can be so far out, which strikes me that the tools that have are not sufficient to truly predict the best rebates and course of action. To add insult to injury the recommendation was to add a tankless water system, which would cost an additional $4.5k to install just to save $1,500. I looked around for quotes to install a Tankless Water Heater and they came in around $3k. I feel that they are suckering you in to try and get more work out of you, more a bait and switch move.
