We bought a house with zero insulation and hired Brighthome to tell us what needed to be done and what we could maybe skip. Joe came in and looked at our house, performed a series of airflow tests, etc. and wrote a very detailed plan that told us what they could do, what the item would cost and what the projected energy savings would be - exactly the information we needed to determine what needed to get done and what could wait. He answered all of our questions patiently and thoroughly and was a pleasure to deal with. Matt's team came in to do the work and they were professional and nice to my toddler, which I appreciated. Their work was neat and tidy - people continuously remark about how straight the lines of insulation are and how great the hoods (?) are over the attic doors. They also cleaned up meticulously after they were finished. There is a HUGE difference in how comfortable the house is now, as promised. And we can already see the savings in our monthly bills.

I just did. I couldn't accurately answer some of the questions at the top of the form because in terms of the two gentlemen who came here, they were fine -- except that their reflections after looking over the house were quite different. The fact that the paper followup didn't appear to address any issues specific to this house was a concern, and then the lack of followup in terms of carrying out any of their recommendations was the key to my giving up on using them.
Description of Work: My experience is bittersweet. The first man who came to do the energy audit was wonderful. He went over the house thoroughly, took notes, shared some specific thoughts with me and listened to my ideas about the same areas needing amending. I was very impressed with his punctuality, the care he took, and his thorough way of reporting to me what he had noticed. I expected that the written report that would be forthcoming would reflect the care with which he examined the house for energy-efficiency (or lack thereof), but when it came, it looked like a form form (like a "form letter") -- nothing particularly relevant to this house. I was surprised. There was no followup call from the company until many months later, when a different person called to make an appointment to stop by. He, too was nice. He looked over the house, may have had the notes from the first man, I don't know. When he gave me his assessment, it was quite different from that of the first man who inspected the house. That was surprising and confusing. When he left, he said he would get back to me. No one ever called me back. Granted, my house is cluttered. I could see how working on it might be discouraging and figured that's what they might have thought. But there was no follow-up from the main office at all. I gave up, and wouldn't recommend them to anyone else even though they might do well by another homeowner.

They arrived promptly when they said they would. Very professional, got right to work, answered all the questions I had. They worked quickly, addressing any items I mentioned as problem areas. They were good about suggesting work to perform that would get the best value for the dollar, there was no high pressure sales tactics. There wasn't any selling at all, just suggesting what could be done to improve efficiency of my house whether they did the work or not. By the end of the audit I had a much better idea about the state of my home and where to go from here.
Description of Work: They came and did a full inspection of my home, tested all combustion appliances. They also used a blower door and thermal camera to test air leakage and insulation consistency.

Bright Home came out in April and completed the home energy audit. This was completed as described but from there nothing was completed. We had to call a few times to get the audit and all we ever received was a quote for work that they recommended. We then tried to schedule an appointment to go over the quote so that we can complete the work. We tried multiple times to contact them and we even tried to contact the owner (Mr. Brown). We finally got in contact with Mr Brown and he promised to get back in contact with us to complete the work and that was the last we ever heard from them. This went on for months. So basically we paid for an energy audit that we never received and can not get anywhere with it. I would not do business with this company again. Update: We have been waiting for a call back and now see that they have responded via this review that they are no longer working in NJ. Very unprofessional.
Description of Work: Bright Home was to come out and complete a home energy audit and then recommend a plan and implement the suggestions.

The price was right, as it was subsidized by the power company and/or the State. :-) I had no complaints. I was surprised to hear, some months later, that the company had been kicked out of the State program for not meeting some standard.
Description of Work: I don't really remember the date that this service was performed; I've put in a guess. Two workers came to my home at the agreed-upon time and inspected the basement, attic, etc. for "low-hanging fruit" of energy efficiency. They temporarily attached an exhaust fan to the front door and performed an airtightness test, going all over the house looking for drafts. Two of the strongest were around the doors to the attic and the basement, so they installed a rubber seal and a floor-sweep on the attic door, and (running out of their authorized time) left me with a sweep to install myself on the basement door. They gave me a list of several future repairs, beyond the scope of this visit, that would improve the house's energy efficiency, and made clear that their company would be happy to perform those repairs, for real money :-)

The comment that BrightHome was kicked out of the state program is totally erroneous. In fact, BrightHome was recognized in 2012 as the #1 Home Performance Contractor in the NY Down State Region by NYSERDA. Also, BrightHome is the only Home Performance Contractor in the NY Down State Region recognized by the United States Department of Energy and EPA with their prestigious Century Club Award. The actual audit went very well. The follow-up (or lack thereof) left a lot to be desired.
Description of Work: Setting up the initial appointment was fine. The two men who came to the house to conduct the audit were very nice, professional and explained everything they were doing. However, the initial email that I received stated "Your personalized plan will lay out action steps to help you use less energy, save money and create a healthy, more comfortable environment. We will schedule an appointment to present this to you at the time of your audit." A month after the audit, I had not heard from them. I had to email several times and finally got the audit report via email. No one ever set up a second appointment to go over the report and work with me on how to get the rebates or loans that were available if I decided to go ahead with any or all of the work. It was disappointing to say the least.

Since this was purchased through an Angie's List Big Deal, I imagine that the company had a lot of business to handle on the back of the offer, so it was a bit hard to get a date scheduled for any time close - but we landed on a date in early 2012. The auditor, Brian, was very nice and I felt very safe and comfortable having him in my home. He came in, explained the process and what he was looking at, and began his process. I was impressed with the heat sensors he had that could tell us where we were losing the greatest amount of heat, and grateful that he told us replacing the rest of the windows wouldn't be as good of an energy savings without the walls in our 1920's home being insulated -- saved us some money. I was disapppointed that he was unable to do certain tests because our home is older and I guess there are some parts of the audit that can't be run due to the age of the home (and the risk for asbestos or other hazards). Brian left, and several weeks later (unfortunately, I had to email him several times to get it) the report came. It was a lot of what I thought it would say, but there were some nuggets of information that have helped us in deciding what energy-saving repairs we should be doing. Overall, it was fairly good, but for people with older homes, be aware that they might not be able to run all the tests they have the capability to do. I am not sure I would need them to come back and do any other services - is kind of a "one time" process.
Description of Work: The Brighthome Energy Audit was purchased as part of an Angie's List Big Deal. The auditor came to our home, and surveyed the areas where energy is consumed, and provided a written report of areas where our home could use updating to more energy efficient sources.

They did an energy audit, giving us a description of what our house needed to be more efficient in usage of energy. The audit recommended what steps to take, the cost involved and future savings due to reduced energy usage as a result of better insulation. We went forward with their recommendations. They did an excellent job and this winter we notice the house is much warmer, the insulation was well worth the cost. I would recommend Bright Homes to anyone!!

Excellent. Great attention to detail
Description of Work: They did a detailed, high tech, state of the art energy audit including infrared documentation. They covered every corner of the house. Gave us feedback on other issues they happened to see. They packaged their results and presented findings via video conference. They did the sealing and insulation. The workmen were A+. They came back and tested the results of their work. They helped us get the NYS rebate. Then NYS called and asked if Honeywell could inspect the work. A representative from Honeywell did another energy audit, which passed with flying colors.

Overall, it was good. The initial audit was very good and thorough, including thermal imaging and blower test. The follow through (and pricing) on suggested remediation was not as good. Also, being I had blown in insulation before they came, their imaging showed deficiencies that they were to send to me to go back to my installation company to rectify. I did not get those images from them.

This was an investment in service that was well worth the money and proved to be very helpful. I was most impressed by the credentials of the individual who actually performed the audit. The credential was issued by BPI and is an industry standout. He performed all tests and was able to input everything into his laptop using specialized software. We received the full report via email in two days. The report was more detailed than expected and showed where we should spend our home improvement dollars for the greatest returns. I recommend this service even if the special price doubles. They are pros.
Description of Work: Home orientation, room sized, window and external doors sized, type of construction used was detailed, he even got into the attic and throughout the basement. The evaluation effort left no detail unaddressed. We had the past year's utility bills ready for him and he input the data into the program. The evaluation does include a whole-house pressure test but I declined this since our fireplace damper was broken and the result of the test would have been in error.

A few days after the audit was completed, I received the energy assessment report as promised, but that's unfortunately all that was ever done. According to the program manager I spoke with at NJ Clean Energy -- the State of New Jersey program that oversees the financial incentive program for NJ residents looking to insulate their homes -- a company like Brighthome that performs an audit is expected to enter its testing results into the state's computer system as the final step in completing the original audit process. That raw data would then be accessible by other companies if consumers like myself wanted to get quotes from a few different insulation contractors to go ahead with the work. The contractor from Brighthome who conducted my audit responded that entering the data into the state's computers and generating an RHA was not technically required as part of the original audit. He claimed it would take several hours of work (the program manager at NJ Clean Energy disputed that, saying it should only take half an hour max), and he would only agree to do it if I signed a contract with him, pledging to hire Brighthome to do insulation job. I went back and forth several times between NJ Clean Energy and Brighthome, trying to resolve the issue, without any luck. The program manager tried to intervene to help me by speaking with the owner of BrightHome and explaining that he is supposed to enter the data, especially if he got paid to conduct the audit, but he said he had offered a discounted rate on the audit in hopes of getting the job, and he refused to enter the data without a commitment from me. In the end, it turned out that NJ Clean Energy didn't have any means of enforcement, so I ended up having to hire another contractor to start from scratch and conduct another audit in order to get additional estimates to insulate my house (and that contractor, I should mention, promptly entered the results into the system, where they were viewable by any other contractors who cared to see them). I didn't start out planning to get the cheapest audit I could find and then give the work to someone else. I simply wanted to take the results and then shop around, getting a few competing estimates from a few different contractors before making up my mind, just as I've done every time in the past when I've hired people to do work on my home. I would never dream of hiring the first person who came along without having any other estimates to compare! I didn't realize the process in this situation would be so difficult. I had been considering hiring Brighthome to do the full job insulating my house, but I was thoroughly frustrated after fighting with them to release my audit results, so I ended up taking my business elsewhere.
Description of Work: I purchased a discounted energy audit from my house from Brighthome after seeing it offered as an Angies List Big Deal promotion. The auditor came and conducted a variety of tests and then generated a report for me detailing my home's current energy loss and how its efficiency could be improved by adding insulation.
