Had the old AO Smith water heater (that was leaking) replaced. Old AO Smith was 6 year warranty - lasted 9.5 years. Replaced with Bradford White water heater. Made in USA. Job went exactly as planned. I had 105 psi on my water line and asked if he could install a pressure reducer on this trip. Answer was 'yes'. So I had that installed. That added approx $250 to the bill. Excellent job performed by Bob Borrelli. He is a very skilled craftsman and takes pride in his work.
Description of Work: Replaced 40 gal water heater - took old water heater away. I also asked for a water pressure reducer to be installed. That was an extra cost. Used Angies's 10% off coupon. Total was $936.36 (water heater = 688.50; pressure reducer = 247.86).

I thought I'd like to install a sump pump so I called Penfield Plumbing. When the man came out to assess the situation he was honest and told me a sump pump would not solve my water problem. He explained what I could do to solve the water problem that had nothing to do with plumbing. He did not try to sell me on anything. Before he left he asked if there were any plumbing issues he'd like me to take a look at. As a matter of fact I had an unstable toilet in the basement. He fixed the problem, explaining the problem and how he was fixing it. Penfield Plumbing's worker was professional and, in my opinion, honest.

When we are away from our home for more than a day, we shut the water off to the entire house by closing a secondary water valve in our basement. Upon returning home, I noticed a leak from this valve when I turned it back on. I also noticed that a water connection right above our hot water tank had a very small leak. On 01/21/13, I called Penfield Plumbing, told them what I wanted to have done and scheduled an appointment for that Wednesday around 8:30 AM. They could have been here sooner, but our schedule would not permit that. Their rep showed up at the scheduled time. He was very friendly, professional and listened to what we had to say. After showing him the issues, he said: (1) Replacing the secondary main water shut off would depend if the main water shut off would hold. If it did not, than the local water authority would have to be contacted to shut the water off at the street. Fortunately, when he tried this valve, it held. (2) That our our hot water tank had a couple of more years left, but due to the water leak right above the intake to this tank, there was a lot of rust at this point on the tank. This spot could hold or it could leak. (3) A section of the gas line to the hot water tank was not in code. Instead of the required black pipe, there was a flexible pipe - the kind you usually see behind gas stoves. (4) Some of the plumbing right above this hot water tank needed to be stream lined instead of small sections of pipe with connectors. NOTE: This gas line and plumbing near the hot water tank had been installed prior to us owning this house. We have been in this house for 2 1/2 years. (5) Our water pressure reducer was completely rusted. It appeared to be the original one to this house. Our house was built in the 1970's. I wanted it replaced. Since this job now included all of the above, it required more time than had originally been scheduled. After he called his office, we scheduled for 8:30 AM the next morning. I informed him that I had a coupon (printed from Angie's website). He said that would further reduce our cost. The next morning, the rep arrived - again on time - and was also accompanied with another plumber. Since we have a separate entrance to our basement, they suggested that they use that instead of going through the house. In the basement, they put down a tarp to catch the dirt, snow, etc from outside. Both men worked quickly and quietly and were done way prior to lunch time. The rep showed us the work that was done and answered any questions we had. The amount on the bill matched the estimate that was given us the prior day. The work areas were clean, the work done was excellent, both men were very professional and friendly. I would recommend this company to our friends and neighbors and would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Replaced a pressure reducer and a 3/4 inch main ball valve and installed a new hot water tank. Also, re-did some of the plumbing near this hot water tank and brought up to code the gas line to the hot water tank.

I was very pleased with Penfield Plumbing. Our water heater died on a Sunday and I contacted 4 places. Penfield Plumbing was the only one that said it could be replaced that day! We chose to wait until Monday, when it would be a bit cheaper, but we also used the %10 off coupon that Angies list provided. The work was done efficiently and we were very pleased

Fortunately everything was as Elliott had described in the "best case" scenario...there was a clog on the very end of the pipe leading into the septic tank and our septic guys (Meyers -also great) were able to take care of it and also emptied both of our tanks...which was due to be done in the spring anyway. So the drain was cleaned, the septic tanks emptied and I got the new faucet for my wash sink that I had been wanting. I feel so fortunate to have a company like Penfield Plumbing that is trustworthy and ethical and really cares about customers in an old fashioned, service-oriented way.
Description of Work: We have used Penfield Plumbing in the past and have always, always felt they were responsive, extremely reliable and paid great attention to detail in every job. So, when our main drain from our kitchen and half bath appeared to be clogged (we also have septic) we called them. I called first thing in the morning and someone Elliott arrived early that afternoon. He introduced himself and was very courteous and respectful. I told him the situation and showed him where the drain was. He opened the drain and saw that it needed cleaning, brought in his equipment and cleaned and snaked the drain to the septic tank. Unfortunately the water still was now flowing properly. He then explained that the next step would be to dig up the tank and check things out. I volunteered information about the company we use to empty the septic tanks and he suggested I may want to call them. This all was happening when the temperature was about 10 degrees outside. Elliott then went on to explain various scenarios with me and helped me to decide what to do next. I could tell he was concerned that he hadn't been able to completely handle the job, even though he took care of everything to the very best of his ability and discussed options and scenarios with me as well. He even installed a new faucet (a job I just had asked him about) while he was there. He cleaned up everything and told us to call if we had any further concerns or questions about anything. He was wonderful...as I said earlier, everyone I have ever dealt with at the company has been so courteous, conscientious, respectful and very ethical. They are fabulous and I wouldn't call anyone else!

Wife noticed carpet outside basement powder room was wet. Tile floor in powder room was also wet. Husband/reviewer inspected valve and pipe feeding toilet. No leaks noticed. Followed water pipes from main feed to vertical drop behind powder room wall. Pipes were all dry so I guessed the leak was at the 90 deg elbow going into the toilet feed. It was about 9 AM at the time I decided to call Penfield Plumbing. Their schedule was full for the day but they said a man would come about 4 PM. Sure enough, on Christmas Eve right around 4 PM Penfield Plumbing showed up. He had access to the wall from a closet that I had emptied. He got in there, inspected the pipes and the leak was at the 90 deg elbow feeding the toilet. We were preparing for Christmas Eve dinner with family but the plumber went about his work replacing the needed pipes and shut off valve to the toilet. He finished the work in about 2.5 hours with new piping and shut off valve for the toilet. He explained exactly what he did and told me the drywall behind the toilet was wet and needed to dry for a few days. He did a great job. Asked for exactly what the estimate was for payment and left.

The technician arrived punctually and was friendly and personable. Showed him the gas water heater which he re-lit. Then, showed him small leak in main shut-off valve for water line. He instructed me about the process involved (contacting the water authority to shut-off water from street line) and the amount of time needed for the repair. He provided me with a written estimate. I would definitely call them back to make the repair.

I gave them the model of the old water heater over the phone, they looked up the size and then gave me a time when they would be over to make sure the pipes in the house were the correct size. They stated they would be over to the house within 4 hours later and they were there within 2 hours. They called me as i was out of town and only the tenants were at the property. They gave a quote and explained the job. I thought the quote was a little high but there promptness and professionalism made up for it. Job was well done, they were very respectful and prompt. I would definitely use them again especially in an emergency. They gave me a quote stating my water pressure in the house was at 80 psi and they suggest a pressure reducer but were upfront and said my pressure is high but could wait a little while as i just paid for a new water heater. I appreciated their honesty and understanding my financial situation around the holidays.

After looking over our plumbing system, he determined that it wasn't a filter problem. The cloudiness in the kitchen tap water was the result of too much oxygenation when the water came through the pipes. It was a relief to know that the water was fine. He was very polite and professional. We weren't charged for the visit. We would definitely call Penfield Plumbing again.
Description of Work: We were concerned that the water in our kitchen was very cloudy and possilbly contaminated. We thought our water filter were damaged or in need of replacement, but since we had only been in this house for a couple of years, we didn't know where they were or how old. We called for an estimate. They came out promptly to check the system for problems.

Everything was done in a timely manner and we were scheduled quickly. The plumber was a bit rude about honoring the coupon, but the home office was very amenable...I think this was just an administrative miscommunication to the plumber. The plumber had to return to tighten the drain because it was leaking. He did so the next day and was very quick and professional that visit.

I requested an estimate to install a faucet I had purchased. I wanted the old one removed, and also to replace the "u" pipe below it, along with installing shut off valves. The estimate was around $400.00. I felt that was more than I could afford at the time, so I asked how much it would be to just install shut off valves at the sink area and do nothing else since it was a sink in the basement that I never use. The estimate was $150.00!!!! And then on top of that there would be a $40.00 "service call charge.!!! Are you kidding me? I asked the young man that gave me the estimate what the "service call charge" was for, and he responded "for coming to your house"...how else would they do the work, unless they CAME TO YOUR HOUSE!? I told him I thought that it was double charging the customer and he said "well that's just the way our company does business." I thanked him for his time, wished him a good day (he was very pleasant) and told him I will keep looking. I know that nothing is inexspensive these days, however, a $40.00 "service call charge" is abusive in my opinion and a $150.00 charge for a 2 shut off valves is excessive. My opinion is to keep looking if you need plumbing work!

Response from Penfield Plumbing
Penfield Plumbing prides itself on providing customers with upfront, honest pricing, with no hidden charges. This home owner recieved a free quote without any pressure or obligation. Penfield plumbing employs plumbers, not salesman. The "trip charge" or " call fee" is very common in the service industry. While some companies are open and disclose it, others bury it into their pricing.

Response from Penfield Plumbing
Home owner recieved a free quote to relocate a dryer vent termination to the front of the house. This work would entail exiting through the "band joist" of the house, not a ledger board as stated by the home owner. The band joist is also referred to as a "house band" and is traditionally where venting exits through. This is a perfectly legal and code compliant method. Penfield Plumbing & Heating Inc is licensed and follows all state and local building codes.

Professionalism at Penfield Plumbing starts with the receptionist at the office. In each of the three cases described the operator was efficient in finding out the problem, setting up the service calls and taking down preparatory information. In each case the plumber assigned to the jobs first name was Elliott. He demonstrated that he was knowledgeable, articulate, thorough, clean and efficient. His jobs were well thought out. He approached each problem with a plan. We are very comfortable knowing that this professional's attention to detail resulted in quality solutions that should serve us well for many years to come. Working in an over two hundred year old home has many challenges for those in the trades. Many would balk knowing the logistic problems sometimes presented. That was not the case with this plumber. His goal was to complete the project well and not to complain about working conditions. He performed at the highest levels. We would certainly recommend Penfield Plumbing to others. We are already contemplating some projects for the spring of 2013 that will involve them.
Description of Work: This review represents three service calls that I had from Penfield Plumbing since April 2012. During the first visit the plumber replaced a toilet seal correcting a dripping problem. The second call was an elective service. The plumber was asked to identify piping that showed excessive wear in our basement and replace it. Shut off valves were also replaced. The third visit was similar to the second.. The plumber identified pipes, handles and shut off valves that needed replacement. In all cases these were near the breaking point. I should point out that each problem was in a different area. These were not callbacks.
