I purchased a coupon through Angie's List for a home energy audit, as we had just moved and were interested in finding ways to minimize our utility costs. The company representative arrived on time and inspected the home and HVAC system, commented on the existing equipment with recommendations on how it could be improved, and left, telling me he would follow up via mail with the report results and a quote for the work that was suggested. It has been nearly two months since the audit was performed, and I have not received the report, or a follow up of any kind. While the time and money involved is insignificant, it does in my mind speak to the professionalism of the company, and I will not be using them again in the future. I suspect that the energy audit is a sort of loss leader for them, to get their foot in the door for more substantial revenue, and since my HVAC system was new enough to not require replacement or substantial repair, it wasn't worth the bother to follow up.

[member name removed], Thank you for posting your concerns regarding our complimentary visit to your home several months ago. I reviewed your file this morning with our representative that visited your home back on May 23, 2013. The results of the energy audit were not transmitted because we did not receive (a) historical utility bill information [we can not request this from the utilities, it must be obtained by the homeowners] and (b) completed NYSERDA audit reservation form. We can not prepare a complete energy audit information without historical data on the homes electrical and natural gas (propane, oil, etc.) consumption. The energy audit is not a loss leader for our organization. As a Building Performance Institute certified contractor we are committed to helping homeowners to understand how to save energy in their homes. A common misconception is that the presence of a newer furnace or windows are indicators of a highly efficient home. Typically is it addressing / correcting a variety of smaller issues (i.e. low cost, minimal effort) that provide a far more significant impact toward energy savings. If you can forward the necessary information with can complete the file. Thank you, Brian Ritter

Tech arrived at stated time and worked diligently to get my new hot water tank installed. I ended up needing a pressure reducing valve to be installed by a local plumber company should have better support for their techs he tried but did not have a gauge to test pressure or the needed valve overall experience was positive felt sorry for the worker cause he felt bad he could not get running correctly

My husband called to schedule an appointment for an AC tune-up and air quality check of our central air system. On Thursday, our scheduled appointment date, our service person called and needed to reschedule as he was stuck at a job and would not be able to make it to our home. Our 2nd appointment was scheduled for the following Monday between the hours of 2-4 PM, but our service person did not arrive till closer to 6PM. We could tell it was a busy day, and he apologized for his lateness. The technician went straight to work and really educated us on our HVAC system...he told us we didn't need to clean the vents (which I thought was very honest of him) and he simply gave our AC unit a tune up. Everything is running smoothly and I would definitely use this company again (even with the rescheduling).

Everything went exactly as I would hope. The owner was extremely knowledgeable and provided clarifying information to my questions. I felt that I had a good understanding of my options based on the information provided. I was glad to find that they also do duct cleaning, water heaters, generators, etc. I had them replace our sump pump which has constantly been sticking due to age and residue. They also installed a larger air filter that will only require annual replacement filters and a Wi-fi thermostat, which is super cool since we can now adjust the temperature from our iPhone. The workmen were punctual and nice. They clearly explained how to use everything. The office sent us all of the receipts and forms for a rebate that we qualified for with the installation; how painless is that? I will definitely use their services again. I felt that they provided expertise and great service.

I am very happy with the work that was done. They guys showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves each day, and explained what they were going to do before they did it. They had to add cold air returns in 3 of the rooms, as well as make changes to my electrical box. Before they left, they explained how to work everything. They were polite and friendly. I will call them yearly for maintenance. I would definitely recommend this company!

Thank you for your review. We strive to offer exceptional value and quality to all our customers - - - supported by our offer of a "Best Price Promise." The representative that was out to the home did factor in correcting some code issues with the initial installation beyond simply uninstalling, providing a solid new foundation, reinstalling and calibrating. Has the Town of Amherst code enforcement department been out to inspect the generator installation yet? Please do not hesitate to contact me directly to discuss any questions or concerns regarding our proposal or others. -Brian [note: we respectfully request you modify the review to accurately reflect that we did NOT complete any work at your home, other than the free estimate. Thank you.]

Although the serviceman was 3 hours backed up from the previous call, the company assured me that he would still provide service at my home, and he did. Service was efficient and professional, the serviceman was extremely knowledgeable and the price was given to me when I made the appointment. He trouble-shooted my complaint of fumes, and finally assured me that any fumes, were not from that unit. I am now very pleased with operation of the air conditioner and look forward to a wonderfully cool summer indoors.

Thank you for the review. I apologize if we were behind schedule in arriving at your home. We provide arrival windows to help clients plan for the approximate time of our arrival. The option of a "call ahead" alert to notify approximately 30 minutes before our arrival is also available to allow homeowners to perform their desired daily activities and return home upon notification. Unfortunately we do not know how much time each service repair require until we arrive on site and identify the issue. Sometimes this can result in service appointments being delayed despite our best efforts to reallocate resources. Thank you for your patience. As always, please contact me at your convenience with any questions or concerns regarding your heating, plumbing, standby power, insulation or other services provided by Zenner & Ritter. This is a follow up to a previously submitted review I made on this company. I was mistaken, the estimate for air conditioning which could be performed was between $2800 and $6200. I mixed up this company with another because I had several estimates given to me.

Thank you for investing the time to submit a review; however, I'm afraid you may be confusing our Company with another contractor. I personally was at your home; at the time you were addressing mold/mildew issues related to a hot tub that was installed in the rear addition by the previous homeowners. Three different system options were offered back in July of 2011 at the time of my visit (the review states work was completed in 2012 but we have not returned to your home since my free in-home visit). If you are still interested in pursuing air conditioning, air source heat pumps or other systems please contact our offices at your convenience. Your proposal is still on file.

From start to finish everything went great and the furnice is running very well.
Description of Work: Dave came out for an estimate. He was right on time. The thing I liked about him was that he was about 60 and spent most of his career installing furnices. Only resently , did he decide to go into the sales part of the company. I could tell he know exactly what he was saying. He told me what we needed and answered my questions. I had 2 other estimates that were real close, but choose Ritter because of Dave and his experience. All went well . The services preformed were to remove the old 20 year old gas furnice and replace it with a new high efficency York Furnice.

This winter, we began experiencing noticeable problems with our heating system. The indoor temperature would drop well below the temperature at which our thermostat was set (i.e. the house would get to 61 degrees before the furnace kicked on, instead of at 65). Also, the furnace would kick on and then immediately stop, kick on again and run its cycle. Additionally, the furnace would sometimes kick on, the blowers would turn on then turn off, turn on again, turn off again, and then the furnace would stop altogether. Finally, we would have to temporarily up the thermostat by as much as 10 degrees for the furnace to kick on! I came to the conclusion that it was the thermostat and not the furnace itself at issue. This was seemingly confirmed when we recently had a home energy audit performed. When inspecting the furnace, we were notified that it was running at peak efficiency, although the motor itself appeared to be clogged with dust/grime. The person doing the audit recommended everything get cleaned out. We called Z&R to come out and see for sure what the issue was. Sure enough, the thermostat (despite being a discontinued model) was fine, and the gunk on the motor was the culprit (heat sensor and pressure sensors were blocked with the grime). The gentleman from Z&R cleaned this up and the furnace/thermostat seem to work just fine, once again. My only concern is that we previously had Z&R come to our house in Autumn of 2012 to perform a routine furnace checkup. I always assumed (wrong thing to do, I know) that the checkup included a cleaning. Perhaps cleaning is a completely separate thing from the checkup? I was not present for the checkup so I cannot verify for sure. If cleaning is included in the checkup and it was done, but there was just honest dust accumulation in the furnace, then I happily accept that. Either way, this was nothing of a deal breaker, as this time (and last) the service was prompt and the price was fair (although the price was a bit steep this time, since we didn't have a coupon). God forbid anything happens, but we'll continue to use Z&R as needed.
Description of Work: Zenner & Ritter came out to inspect what was initially assumed to be a thermostat issue. Turns out our furnace blower and innards were dusty to the point of blocking the heat sensor. Z&R cleaned everything thoroughly.

We had contacted many different companies and of all of them, we liked Zenner the best. Nate came out to our house and was the most professional person we had met from all the places: other people came over and would be at our house for maybe 10-15 minutes and/or not seem interested whereas Nate was at our house for over an hour. He also was available via email to answer all the questions my wife and I had. Overall, very good experience.

The tech seemed to go through the steps required until the attempt to double charge for the A/C maintenance service. I paid on 10/08/2012 for the " Big Deal" on Angies List and they tried to double charge for the service. I spent one half hour to recover proof of payment before the double charge was removed. The pre-payment was a big mistake for this company. I have not had any problems in the past with other companies. (I also had a much better experience with Sullivan ( and they have much better pricing ).
Description of Work: The technician did not recognize the printout from Angie List that I prepaid for in October 2012. (The offer is still on Angies List). The people in the office also denied knowledge of the offer and said they had received no payment. Angies List responded that Zenner and Ritter had been paid. I don't know how a company can participate in a promotion and claim they have no knowledge. I will not do business with this company in the future.

rServiceman inspected older of the two furnaces and cleaned much dust from appliance. Warned the humidifier in the unit was obsolete and dangerous because bacteria build up is possible. Could not service it and recomended replacement. Next he examined second furnace which was fairly nee <5 yrs. He trashed the manufacturer and said these units cause problems. Trashed guy who installed furnace. Keep in mind BOTH furnace functioned perfectly. Then he moved something i the furnace and it stopped working. Ge had to take part of the furnace appart to get it working again. WE paid the bill and he ran home. He said he was busy andwas working two jobs so his bosses request to work overtime was a problem. This guys advice and work on furnace 1 was excellent. Trashing the second unit and fumbling the second was uncalled for - it sounded like a sales pitch to replace an almost new furnace which was spotlessly clean before he touched it.

Great experience. Made appointment over the phone, availability was within 3-4 days of first contact. Appointment time was between 8-12. Serviceman called about 10:45am to let me know he was on his way and showed up around 11am. Service call lasted about 45 minutes, he completely disassembled my boiler, cleaned it, tested everything and answered all of my questions. He did ask to use my restroom, but was very polite/professional about it, and I didn't mind letting him use it. I also asked for a quote on duct cleaning, and he called in the request immediately and informed me that the office would be calling me back with a quote. I haven't heard back yet, but it has only been a few hours since he was here. He was also able to take my credit card information - which he wrote down to process at the office. If this company was smart, they would use a service like square - which would make me feel less nervous that all of my CC info is just sitting on an invoice for anyone to see. All in all a good experience, and I would definitely recommend.

I had been without heat for a week and the company knew that but could not get a technician there for several days. After leaving work early to so I could arrive home to meet the technician for the scheduled appointment, I received a call from him while I was in transit. He tried to get out of the appt saying he was supposed to be at a wedding that day and he couldn't believe the office scheduled him for the call. After much begging on my behalf (I had been without heat now for about 8 days), he said he'd meet me at my home. He went into the basement, looked at the boiler for no more than 3 minutes, said it needed replaced but couldn't give me any information on the type of replacement boiler or any cost or installation estimates. A couple of days later, another technician came out to give me the information I sought. He was really the only positive experience I had with this company. He was extremely professional, pleasant and knew his products well. He wrote up an estimate on the spot and offered me three different options. I called a couple of days later to schedule the installation, but had a question about one item. The individual I spoke with said I had to call back the next day and speak with the technician (he was out ill) before I could schedule an appointment. I called the next day and was not able to contact the technician since he was in the field, so I just tried to schedule the installation again. The office told me they would not even schedule the installation until I had returned the signed proposal with the deposit. I had already lost a day when they didn't help me the day before and at that time, they didn't inform me I needed to mail in the proposal. It was now a solid two weeks without heat and I was going to lose a few more days by mailing the paperwork in. I took off of work again the next day and personally delivered the paperwork to the company. At that time, knowing I was going into three weeks without heat, they told me they couldn't schedule the installation for another 7 days. Then another person from the office told me the rules had just changed on the Energy Star rebates so I wouldn't be eligible for both rebates that were quoted on the proposal unless I fudged the paperwork. I was quite shocked at the dishonesty of the man I spoke to and couldn't believe he was telling me to do something extremely dishonest. Needless to say, I walked out of that office and called another company who has done a wonderful job.
Description of Work: I scheduled an appointment for someone to look at my boiler which had stopped working and let me know if it could be repaired or if it had to be replaced. I had a prior estimate from a different company who said it needed to be replaced and due to the cost, was shopping for 1. professional opinion to see if it truly needed to be replaced or if it could be repaired; and 2. best proposal.

Response from Zenner & Ritter Home Services
Thank you for investing the time to experess your concerns and share you experience; obviously this is not the perspective we are seeking to acheive. There were two appointments at the house scheduled based on conversations with the client; Sept 28th and Oct. 3, 2012. The first was for a service call by a repair technician to evaluate the possibility of restoring heat. As indicated, the condition of the system prohibited this approach and the technician turned it over to our office for a consultant to come out and develop proposal for a new system. The service fee for the first visit was waived. I pulled a copy of the proposal developed during our second visit. It is true that, without warning, NYSERDA implemented a rule preventing homeowner from claiming both an Energy Star rebate and a National Fuel rebate. This is due to an agreement National Fuel signed with the Public Service Commission. Accordingly, one or other other could be claimed but not both. It sounds as if there was a miscommunication with our representative as their is no paperwork that can be "fudged"; the agencies cross-reference the rebate applications to prevent duplication. I regret not learning of your concerns earlier and/or having the opportunity to address them while you were encountering your "no heat" situtation. Please do not hesitate to contact me with service or support needs regarding any home comfort or plumbing needs. Thank you!

Wow, are we happy with Zenner & Ritter! We have used them in the past for the furnace and air conditioning system and we have always been satisfied so we called two days ago when the furnace died. At a service call in April they had noted some potential difficulty, so when my husband described the problem they said they knew what was wrong, and that the two parts needed were very expensive. We got an estimate of $700 and since it is cold Chris in the office moved around some scheduled work so the serviceman could come early the very next morning. Rob got here and checked everything out and determined that we only needed the less expensive part. He fixed the furnace, waited to see that it was working properly and the house was warm before noon. We would never have known if he had just replaced the part, so his honesty is greatly appreciated as it saved us $400. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have trust in the professionals you hire, which is why I rely on Angie's list, and that trust is the reason we will continue to use Zenner & Ritter in the future.
Description of Work: The furnace stopped working just when it was getting cold. When we had Zenner & Ritter here to check the a/c in April, they looked at the furnace, which is 20 years old, and thought there might be a problem. They fixed a gas valve.

Given a 4 hour window and Kevin, the technician, called when he was on his way. Upon arrival he asked me to turn on unit and went directly to the basement. Watched as the furnace fired up - stopped it - cleaned it (dusty) and started it up again. Off and on for about 1/2 an hour. Discovered some loose wires and replaced a small sensor. All is well - I was concerned as the unit is 15 years old. He made sure I had no further questions and left me with a card to call for emergency repair 24 / 7. Quick, professional and reassuring. I recommend.
Description of Work: I chose this company from reviews on ANGIE'S LIST. Called for a routine, seasonal "tune up".
