I contacted the non-provider on the date above for an estimate on a project. I was looking to have a natural gas heater installed in my basement. They responded to my request quickly, and asked me a couple of questions so their installers would have an idea what they'd be dealing with. I provided the answers immediately and that was it! No further response from them. Was my job too small for them? Maybe, but they could have let me know! I will never attempt to use them again and will also always speak highly of their "work".

[Name removed], I reviewed your comments on Angie's List. I replied directly to you with multiple messages. No response was received to my last message advising the use of either (a) ducts of the main heating system, or (b) a "chill chaser" unit in lieu of a gas heater. The basis for the suggestion is that we do not advise using non-vented gas heater in a basement or as a primary heating source in living spaces. One of the concerns is the potential for introducing a high-volume of moisture inside the building envelope. I apologize if you did not find the information provided helpful. Unfortunately I cannot agree that providing free professional advice should warrant the ratings or the comments you posted. Certainly it would have required less effort to send an email reply or make a quick phone call if you had concerns. The World is a better place when we endeavor to pursue positive interactions rather than defaulting to negativity. Along those lines, please do not hesitate to contact me or our offices at your convenience with additional questions or concerns regarding this or any plumbing, heating, power or other comfort matters. Sincerely, Brian Ritter (716) 833-2463

I contacted this company based on the great reviews on Angie's list to have them service my air conditioner earlier in July. Was able to get an appointment pretty quickly, technician arrived on time, was courteous, etc. No complaints at all. Based on this positive experience, I had the company come back out to bid on heating/cooling for a master bedroom addition project. Again, no problem getting an appointment and the estimator arrived on time and seemed pleasant. Then things fell apart. The estimator visited my house on July 25th, and I didn't receive an estimate until August 11th (after I called the office asking where it was). I had some additional questions, and emailed them right back on the 11th. It's now August 19th and I haven't received a response. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I am a very picky person, very handy and do a lot of research. I interviewed 4 different HVAC companies before selecting Zenner and Ritter. (I was the regular customer of a different HVAC company and had a previous system installed by them, but over the winter on a simple PM call one of their techs lied about the condition of this furnace. I had already decided to replace it, but you lie, you lose.) I will say that the three other companies I interviewed each impressed me in one way or another. They were all in the top of the Angies List listings as well. But all things included, Zenner and Ritter won out. The salesman was professional and actually recommended a less expensive solution due to the size and configuration of the house. That impressed me. I have undersized vents and allergies so I opted for a variable speed motor and the higher value air filter. The installers were very precise and professional. They were careful in the house. They cleaned up on the first and second day, they did not leave any mess carry over. On the A/C, they installed a custom base and sealed all of the connections. The unit is level and square to the house. The furnace was meticulously installed. The gas pipe is straight, the PVC pipes are parallel and secured professionally. They even turned the writing on the pipes so you can's see it. All of the wiring is zip-tied neatly as well. It actually looks like a brochure photo. OK, I can't speak for all the installers, only the ones I met, but it impressed me. (one strange thing was an "office" person stopped by, walked into my house and started talking to them. No invite in. He ignored me and was just poking at the team that they were going to slow. I am glad that did not prevent them from finishing correctly) So overall a very good experience. The issues were not game changers, the incorrect filter was installed but it was just a filter insert change which was taken care of promptly, the thermostat was on back-order, however, these were just released and I had insisted so it was ok with me and they even sent out a tech to install it when it came in. The B on the price is just because when I add up the man hours and the approximate wholesale on the units I think there was a bit more wiggle room in there, but they were absolutely in the ball park and I would have given any of the other HVAC companies a B as well. I would recommend Zenner and Ritter to friends and family.

The technician took care of the filter problem and the tune up, explained that I needed more refrigerant (which of course doubled the cost, hmm, scam here?) and now my A/C is working like a champ. My only real negative thing to say is that the technician looked like a slob. Dirty pants, stained and crappy t-shirt, unshaven. If he wasn't in a Zenner-Ritter van, I would not have let him in my house. Good service, but not professional in appearance. This surprised me with their reputation.

Thank you for submitting your comments and concerns. Regarding the outward appearance of the technician, your feedback has been shared with the individual as constructive criticism. That individual is dynamic when it comes to diagnostics and repair, but a GQ cover model he is not. Throughout the course of the day technicians can become increasingly 'rugged' in looks and we remind them to try and look as presentable as possible when approaching each clients home. Based on your comments we found that his uniforms did possess a number of permanent stains and requested that Cintas provide him with replacement shirts and pants. Thank you! My concern relates to your statement regarding the system requiring additional refrigerant and the reference to a "possible scam." Unlike many HVAC contractors in the market, we do NOT compensate our technicians for finding additional things "wrong" at a clients home. We provide a higher pay rate and benefits so employees are not feeling financial pressure to supplement their income by selling additional services to homeowners. In other words, they only fix what needs to be fixed and have no incentive to "invent" additional repairs; the goal is just good service. I can appreciate your concern as the practice you allege is becoming increasingly popular in the HVAC industry as a means for boosting revenue. We prefer to simply sleep with a clear conscious at night. We encourage clients to contact our offices if there are any concerns related to services provided by our employees. If you are concerned regarding any of the services performed at your home recently or in the future please reach out to us at your convenience. Thank you again for your time and consideration. Respectfully, Brian Ritter

Gary, a seasoned A/C technician (>25 yr.), was terrific. I observed the entire tune- up procedure and asked many questions, being a first-time home owner. He was very knowledgeable and gave good advice for future A/C care/ purchasing. I have a HEIL A/C & Furnace. Gary said it was a teardrop model that they don't make anymore; one of the best units made. He assured me I had a quality A/C unit and it was in excellent condition for its age. He advised me to stay with same product (HEIL) when I need to replace in the future and same capacity (2 ton). Gary was personable and a pleasure to work with. He felt like family. I will contact Zenner & Ritter Home Services in the Fall for my furnace tune-up and any future service/ repairs. I highly recommend them to anyone needing A/C and/ or Heating home service. A company that has been in service since 1930 speaks large volume - experience, knowledge and satisfied customers.

1. Mike was very helpful, courteous, professional and knowledgeable. 2. Mike did a great job performing the A/C Tune up & cleaning/ washiing the equipment outside the house. 3. Mike was very helpful and patient in answering all our questions regarding the operation of the Humidifier, which he had put in in February 2014. This was in spite of his impression (written down on his work sheet) that we were unhappy with his work on the humidifier last February 2014. We clarified it with Mike, and with Michael at the Zenner office, that we NEVER said we were unhappy about the work Mike did We just wanted to be shown where the place for the filter was, and how to tell if the humidifier was working or not. We did complete a review in February 2014, expressing our satisfaction with Mike's work, and we were happy & appreciated his great work We definitely will call Zenner & Ritter if we need any work with the A/C or Humidifier

Today Dave Zawislak of Zenner & Ritter resolved a significant problem with the plumbing in an upstairs bathroom at my home. Dave?s work was superior, and never again will I use a plumber other than Dave. Hopefully after reading this neither will you. Earlier this year my wife and I contracted to have an upstairs bathroom remodeled. That job was performed by a bathroom contractor, and at the end of that project we experienced what the contractor thought was a leak in the drain of the bathtub. The leak damaged part of the ceiling beneath that drain, which is in our laundry room, and the contractor removed a large part of that ceiling to fix what he thought was that leaky drain. The ceiling remained ?open? for about a week as we waited for the contractor to return to finish the job. I eventually resorted to finishing the ceiling drywall work myself, and in the meantime the hot water tank in our basement failed. As the adage goes, when it rains it pours, and at that point my wife and I decided to contact a professional to install a new hot water tank. Our search for a quality plumber led us to Zenner & Ritter, and they sent master plumber Dave Zawislak to our house to perform the job of installing the hot water tank. Dave was punctual, clean and highly professional, and he efficiently and effectively installed our new hot water tank. During that job my wife prevailed upon Dave to look at what was then our open laundry room ceiling and the plumbing therein. Dave was kind enough to do so, and he warned us that the contractor?s job looked slipshod. Based on what he saw, Dave though that there might be other problems with the contractor?s work. Unfortunately, Dave was right. After patching the laundry room ceiling, I painted the laundry room. In the course of painting that room I removed the cover of the light switch therein. Fortunately, my wife happened to be showering in the newly-remodeled bathroom at that time and, after removing the light switch cover, I noticed water dripping into the light switch gang box. That dripping caused me to inspect my basement, and there I saw that the water had continued past the light switch through the floor and had puddled in the basement. At this point I called Zenner & Ritter and asked that Dave return to my house to solve the leak problem. Dave did so today, and as noted his work was excellent. Dave quickly determined that the dripping at issue flowed not from the drain of the bathtub, but from the showerhead of that unit. Dave fixed that leak, and he explained that the showerhead was installed improperly and not tested by the contractor before the wall of our newly-remodeled bathroom was closed. More importantly, after finding the leak in our shower, Dave was careful to test the water lines between the showerhead and the drain, and that prudence paid off. Through that testing Dave identified two additional leaks and quickly and cleanly solved those problems. In doing so, Dave expertly communicated the nature of the problem and provided a detailed explanation of the proposed fix and the additional expenditure of time necessary to close each leak before efficiently solving each problem. Dave was also kind enough to provide advice beyond the scope of his plumbing work with respect to our remediation of the damage caused by the leaks. To the extent you seek a plumber that is professional, timely, courteous, efficient, well-spoken and, most importantly, a master at his craft, look no further than Zenner & Ritter?s Dave Zawislak. I could not be more appreciative of or impressed by his economical resolution of what was a very vexing problem in my household. After this experience, I will never contact a plumber other than Dave. I hope he is the first and only plumber on your list as well.

Three years ago I had Zenner and Ritter install a new furnace. This year I decided to have central air installed. Like the furnace, they offered the best price I could find in the area and were the most prompt in responding to my questions about the various alternative units. The installation was performed as scheduled and within the time stated. There was a minor post installation issues that they responded to promptly and went beyond my expectations in resolving that issue. Since the time they installed my furnace I have repeatedly recommended them to family and friends and will continue to do so after the great job they did installing the central air conditioner. They go above and beyond to make sure their customers are satisfied before, during, and after installation.

Our hot water heater died on a Saturday. we called around and other companies charge $30 to come out for just an estimate which we didnt want to spend on three estimates. Sunday we went to Home Depot to pick out a tank and Zenner was contracted through them. They returned my call on a Sunday and said they could be out on Monday to install. They said they would be there between 11 am and 1 pm. They did not arrive until about 4:30 which is why they got the C on punctuality. Aside from that everything else was great. Our tech David answered all my questions while installing the unit, and I had a lot as this is my first home. He used drop cloths as it was still a bit snowy and slushy out to protect the floor. He did a great job cleaning his work area. They also hard wired a carbon monoxide and smoke detector in as they stated they were required to by law, which I was happy about as we didn't have one in the basement and talked about getting one anyway. Overall they did a great job, and we have a nice water heater now!

After the second visit, it was a week before we heard from them again. The technician dropped off a pile of technical documents. The problem was the paperwork was delivered not to our door or in person but put underneath our windshield wiper in our car parked in the driveway. There were no recommendations, no quote, nothing that was even remotely helpful to us. We did contact the owner who called us back several days later. Not sure if I am going to bother returning the call as they have been useless so far! Very disappointed

Response from Zenner & Ritter Home Services
[member name removed], Thank you for posting your thoughts and impressions. As you indicated, I attempted to establish contact with you on several occassions prior to the date you submitted the review but utlimately we did not connect. Please understand that we are not an aggressive sales company. Our team members will offer assessments and solution options, always with a goal of maximizing value. We do NOT "chase" homeowners with repeated phone calls, emails and letters to try and get them to buy something. There are enough companies in the world doing this already, and as a homeowner I find it both disruptive and annoying. Our focus is on informing and educating clients regarding methods for improving comfort, energy efficiency and peace of mind in their homes. But we allow homeowners to determine the pace they want to move at, rather than sitting at the kitchen table with a pen extended and pushing for an order. I apologize if our approach came across as being indifferent to your needs, as that is certainly not our intention. As you indicated, the original visit was a service call to inspect and maintain the furnace. During that visit, based on the concerns you expressed to the technician, a follow-up appointment with one of our system designers, Mike, was set. Mike conducted a thorough review at your home and then invested several hours utilizing specilized software and modeling packages to pinpoint the key factors contributing to your dissatisfaction with the system. Initial efforts to schedule a return appointment were not successful. In an effort to communicate the findings in a timely fashion Mike endeavored to deliver the materials directly to your home. He communicated with you, telling you where the materials were going to be left at the home (under the wiper). During the initial meeting it was communicated to him that the members of your household never use the front door, therefore he avoided that location. Below is the text of the letter provided to you that accompanied a 13 page report prepared specifically for your home. That report highlighted areas of concern, included sketches of home and a room by room heating / cooling load calculation. Please do not hestitate to contact me regarding this or any home comfort matters you might encounter. Again, thank you for investing the time to express your concerns. This type of feedback is important for helping us to improve going forward and if concerns are not communicated we cannot respond! [letter content pasted below] Sincerely, Brian Ritter =============== February 19, 2014 [member name removed] XXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXX [member information removed] Dear [member name removed], I have finished my assessment of your current heating and cooling system. Unfortunately you have a design faults in the heating, cooling, and air distribution systems. I have included summary reports that I produced using Wrightsoft, an auto cad type engineering program. This program uses both Manual J 8th Edition to size what your home needs, and Manual D duct design to aid in how to deliver what you need through the distribution system. Don't worry if the reports don't make "sense" to you, I simply included them as proof of what I am saying about your system. The system you have is not large enough to handle the needs of the house. In addition to that, there is no single system large enough to handle your home. I have tinkered with the idea of just zoning the system, however the ductwork is poorly designed and not adequate to provide what is needed for the different areas of your home. I have viewed it from the perfect way to solve it to the least expensive. Unfortunately, there are endless options for correcting the situation that range from installing three separate heating and cooling systems to band aid options that will not solve the issues, but may make you more comfortable. I don't feel it would be good service to just write a proposal for one option or the other due to the complexity of the solutions. I am also not sure to what extent you want this solved. Please let me know your thoughts, and how we should proceed. Sincerely yours, Michael J. Marcil

I am re-reviewing this company. I originally gave it an "F" because they never contacted me. After reading my original review, I received an e-mail and then a phone call. Earl came out and did the energy audit. He was very professional but also shared his sense of humor. He explained the results of the audit to us and answered any questions we had. I received the written audit within a few days later. Overall, I will recommend Zenner & Ritter after all.
