Murphy Moving & Storage

I contacted John C. Murphy Moving & Storage Inc. last week to come out and give me an estimate on a local move. When I spoke with Geraldine (who was actually nice) she said that someone could come out either Saturday (3/29/14) or Sunday (3/30/14) to meet with me and give an estimate. I have a rather substantial move and needed to get a moving estimate pretty quickly. I told Geraldine that either day worked for me so she scheduled me for Sunday from 11am to 1pm. It is 5:25pm on Sunday as I right this review and as of now no one has shown up or called me. I have called their provided telephone number and sent them an email to inquire as to where their representative was, but have not received a response. Basically, I wasted an entire day waiting for these guys. I am now having to go on another Moving Company search. The process of waiting around for a company rep to not show up is extremely irritating as well as putting me behind schedule. Needless to say, I won't be using John C. Murphy Moving & Storage Inc.

It was a very easy move from the day the crew showed up for packing in NY until the day they delivered to the storage unit in Florida. We were very happy with everything from start to finish. We would use them again and would recommend them highly.

Wonderful Company!! Gereldine the Office Manager was so helpful and returned my calls and kept us up-to-date with everything. My daughter-in-law said that the men were so nice and helpful. Perfectly. They came on time and finished packing things I couldn't handle, pictures, lamps, mirrors etc. They were polite and very professional I was amazed at how well they worked as a team. The truck arrived at my destination on time and did a terrific job, really nice people. I would highly recommend this company and personally wouldn't use any one else.

Well, they showed up a week early to begin the work. Luckily, my son came up from Manhattan to open the door for them. We were in the car on our way south when we got the call on July 5th that they would begin on July 6th. John Murphy was so correct in coming a week early. It did take them extra time to move out all of our stuff. And it all worked out quite well. Nothing was broken, and nothing was lost. And they moved our stuff into our new home on the day that the promised. The office staff was most polite and answered all my questions -however many I asked!! I would not use them again, because I no longer live in Westchester County, NYS. So the question is not relevant to me.

Packed EVERYTHNG IMAGINABLE and we were not prepared for the move, such as clothes in basement were packed with items in the basement. Items were packed where they were found which may have been our fault as we had not moved in 31+ years and may not have been as organized as we should have been. The men were absolutely outstanding.

Went very well. Service was performed as committed and personnel (on phone setting up move and movers themselves) were very professional and courteous.

The driver Mike Davis was so on top of everything. In the past I brought a lot of things down myself because they were antiques and we have had some things break in the past. This time I should have let them take care of everything. They wrapped the top and bottom of everything with quilts and plastic. They were here at 8 o'clock in the morning and were finished by 1. They showed up to our Florida home on time and everything was unloaded quickly.

Can't say enough about Murphy Moving. From Bob, who gave us the estimate, to Geraldine in the office who handled the paperwork, and especially the crews of packers and movers, they were top class. They came when they said they would, handled everything, and were extremely courteous and efficient. Their price was competitive with the other estimates we received. I don't have a single negative word to say about them.

They were very friendly, professional, and excellent. Took very good care of all of my things.

John Murphy himself showed up to do my estimate as they were very busy at that point in the month. He was pleasant, knowledgeable, and had good suggestions for moving. I was concerned about moving some of the pieces as they were old, very heavy and had great sentimental value. John offered some good suggestions on how best to move those things, while keeping cost in mind. Most of the furniture was very heavy as it was all wood--no particle board. We had a 5 man crew who showed up on time and went right to work. They had the house cleaned out in 4.5 hours. Everything was padded and then clear wrapped on top of that, so it was all in good shape when it went on the truck. All 5 guys pitched in and did a great job--they were tireless in their effort. After a quick lunch for them, which was not included in my billing time, we all met at the house. I opened up the house and showed them where i wanted all the pieces. I had some things that were going in to the house, others that were going on a u-haul type truck and still others that were going to the garage for pick up by the Salvation Army. Basically this again was no easy job, although they did make everything flow smoothly. While we were emptying out the truck, my neighbor stopped by to say hello. She had just employed their services 2 days before and took the opportunity to tell them how happy she was with their work yet again. The pieces that I was taking in the "u-haul" truck not only had to be placed in the truck but I had arranged to have all the pieces wrapped for moving. They did a fantastic job--everything was wrapped in cardboard and then shrink wrapped on top of that. They also went the extra and tied the pieces down in the truck to avoid any shifting. The pieces that they placed in the garage were all "neatly" placed to one side so if we needed access to the snowblower or anything like that there were no problems. I would reccommend them to any and everyone. They were tireless, hardworking, neat, friendly, polite--and did an outstanding job. They finished the job a couple of hours sooner, so my bill was recalculated to boot! The price, the service, the care was outstanding--this is why I joined Angie's list! P.S. I have hired them to do another move for me in March!

They did a very good job. They were very responsive in the estimate process. They packed everything efficientlty and showed up on time for the move. The only negative thing was that they sub-contracted with Wheaton Movers. And they were poor in communicating when they would arrive in Seattle. They were also late in meeting me for the delivery and lost two items.

I was redecorating and needed some large pieces of furniture (including a piano) moved. When I finished redecorating, I needed the pieces moved back, as well. The firm was prompt in returning my call (I had called on a weekend) and were able to schedule my move very quickly. They were extremely efficient and took good care of my furniture. The pricing was the best of all the firms that I contacted. The arrived when expected. I had a similar experience when I called to have the pieces moved back. Overall, I was thrilled that an extremely professional, family-owned firm was available and priced reasonably to handle my valuable pieces of furniture.

The estimator came on time and went through the house quite rapidly. The quote was in line with expectations, and of the three companies we engaged, John C Murphey was not the cheapest. One company never came back with a quote at all, another quoted higher then dropped their price by $2,000 to compete (I hate that, just give me the price, don't try it on!) , and I had a raft of very low prices from the web. (Note: if someone quotes you $1,500 to move interstate they are liars and probably a swindler. Look elsewhere.) We agreed a fixed price, based on a minimum weight, in order to guarantee the delivery date. The only issue I had was agreeing a delivery date for packing materials. JCM were very reluctant to make a special visit to drop stuff at the house, and I wanted to be there so it was not left out in the rain. Everything else was very good. We had to bring the packing day up from Tuesday to Monday, in order to avoid hurricane Sandy. In the event, the storm arrived Monday anyway! But JCM sent a crew, with extra packers, to get everything loaded on the van and away by 2:30 p.m., just avoiding the storm. Very committed and generous of them. A great crew. In SC we had a smaller crew, but with a familiar face (the same guy did the estimate, packed, drove down, and unpacked). They arrived on the agreed day, on time, and unpacked quickly and efficiently. We did have two very minor breakages, but nothing obviously through negligence, just inevitable in any move of size. Lastly, we had agreed a shuttle at pick up point, but didn't need it on the day as they sent a smaller truck. So, we actually got a refunded check. Overall, very good.

I had a great experience with these movers. They did not damage a single piece of my very large and heavy furniture. They shrink wrapped every piece of furntiure to protect it. They were also extremely careful not to damage my new hardwood floors when placing the furniture. The workers were very patient and pleasant to deal with. Negative: The moving company includes minimal insurance coverage at best when compared to replacement value of furniture. I was disappointed to find out adequate insurance was not factored into the price quote and I had to pay a substantial fee in order to insure my belongings. It was recommended I contact my insurance broker to see if my homeowners insurance policy covered moving. Needless to say it did not.

The process was smooth throughout, and all of the 15 or so people involved at various stages were professional, punctual, hard-working, and courteous. The estimate was about $100 over the final cost, pretty good for over $10,000 of stuff. Everything arrived safely and on time. Moves are never easy, but they made it go as smoothly as it possibly could. I would recommend them to a friend or family member.

Every item arrived in the same condition as when it left our old home.I would strongly recommend them for their thoroughness, patience, and great care.

I called this company to help me with my small, local move because of the reviews they received on Angie's List. Someone from the company came out to do an in-home estimate of my one bedroom apartment. It was being moved 15 miles away to a condo. He spent about 20 minutes here looking around. He was not very personable, but this can be dealt with, although I prefer people with a friendly personality. He left and gave an approximate estimate. He told me that I would have an estimate by the earliest the next day (Friday) or by Monday at the latest. Monday came and I got no estimate. I called and left a message. Tuesday morning, I called and was told that they still hadn't typed anything up for my estimate and they would get back to me later in the day. Later on, they called and told me that the date I wanted (this weekend) was not available. And they didn't even come up with an estimate because of that. I wish they had told me the date was unavailable so that I didn't wait on their estimate. Ended up using someone else.

Our experience with John C. Murphy moving and storage was smooth and seamless from beginning to end. They were prompt from the appointment for the estimate to the delivery. The estimate was clearly spelled out in writing, no surprises. The office staff were easy to reach either by phone or email, and always answered our questions promptly. The men who came for packing and moving were always pleasant and courteous, and efficient. They were obviously experienced in what they were doing. The driver was one of the employees of the company, and in charge of the local movers that they arranged at the new house. ( one of those movers was rather disappointing because he was not feeling well and did not work as much as the others, but that was not the fault of John C. Murphy Co.) Everything so far has been fine. one chair did have a small amount of damage, but they glued it and it is now fine. So, a large 4000 sq. foot house move was made easy by this company. Note: The only negative was that we were not told that they do not go up into the attic due to pull down stairs at the time of the estimate, but found out a few days before the move when they did the walk-through. Excellent!! I cannot say enough about how great this company is. From the in person estimate to the local team that packed and loaded the trucks, to the team the drove, to the unload / unpack setup - kudos at every level. Bill and his crew led the effort at the point of origin and Mike and his local team did the same at destination. The leaders, the team and their office support are all great at what they do and how they do it. This organization is made up of quality people doing quality work and actually caring about their customer - how refreshing! I highly recommend them!

Mr. Murphy came to my house to do an estimate. It got to be the time he was supposed to arrive and he was not here, so I called the company. They called him and he called me back. He was in traffic, no problem. He ended up being about 10 or 15 minutes late, again no problem. His manner was professional, but rushed. He said I should receive the estimate either that evening or the next day at the latest. The quote did not arrive by the next day, so I called the office about every other day. They were very nice and professional on the phone, but still, no quote! Finally, 8 days later I called and told them either send me the quote today or I am going elsewhere for sure because I need to make this decision. I finally was emailed the quote. It was on the expensive side of the other quotes that I got ($1000, $1100, $1300, $1500 (Murphy), $1600).We really wanted to use them though so I called them back a couple of days later and asked if there was anything we could do on our end to save some labor and bring the quote down by maybe a hundred or two. She said she would get back to me. That was 4 days ago. I have not heard back. We decided to go with another mover due to Murphy's non-responsiveness.

They are fantastically good. They are the best. They were professional and dependable. They didn't break a thing. It was an overall good experience at a bad time because moving is not fun. The movers were well trained. I had a lot of antiques and stained glass and they moved them beautifully. Nothing was broken. The storage facility experience was also good. They were courteous and I was very impressed with them. I would use them to move me to California because they are that good.

It took me a while to get a quote because of a computer failure, but the reviews had been so glowing that I wanted to wait rather than go with another company from which I had received a bid. I'm so glad I waited. The bid was about $700 below the other company (that I had used before) and the service was so much better. I did my own packing, but the care the movers took in wrapping my furniture was wonderful. They were attentive not only to the items being moved, but also to my old and new homes. I haven't found a scratch on the homes or the furniture. My move was the week after the freak snowstorm that took out power at their office. They were still on time to pick up and to deliver.

They moved us from CT to WA. It was very nicely done and we appreciated the service. They were very professional. There had been two companies that had been recommended to us - we are happy that we chose this company. They were very courteous, probably the best moving company I have ever had.
