All in all, when the smoke settled, I was well pleased with all parts of the installation. Randy, the business owner, gave us a fair estimate and answered all my questions--and there were many. He also showed up on site several times to help trouble shoot. Of all the bids we solicited, his was the only one that agreed to do the job A-Z (i.e., buy a second party propane tank and burry it in my yard which he does not normally do)--without a surcharge for removing the old system. Removal of the old system and installation of the new took about two days--and as far as I can tell went without a hitch. Although the job called for a NEW 500 gallon LPG tank, Suburban delivered a clearly used tank with numerous deep scratches--and were ready to burry it before I told them to take it back. Randy quickly straightened it out, and two days later we had a beautiful new tank installed in the lawn. I was really p***** at Suburban and, as soon as my obligatory year contract expires I'm switching to the Galway co-op! There is no doubt in my mind that they intended to f**** off on me the worst used tank in their stockyard, and even the delivery driver was surprised at its condition (and he was told to take that particular tank from the stock yard to the job at my house). My wife and I were really impressed with Tom Burke, who was in charger of digging the tank hole, and then re-filling it after Suburban dropped the tank into it. I swear that the lawn looked better afer he finished than it did when he started. Tom was an excellent detail man, fun to talk to, and realllly good at what he does. He makes a surpurb front man and I hope to run into him again in the future! The inside work was done mostly by Mat Sullivan who installed the Triangle tube boiler, and Bill Touzin who removed the old system and helped with the boiler installation. Both were polite, knew their stuff, and were prompt. My only gripe, which was minor, was that I had to tell them to put drop cloths down as the inside work was done in my fully finished (and carpeted) basement (they were ready to start ripping out the old system before I said whoa--not yet). I'm thrilled with the Triangle tube system--extremely compact and silent--and I love the built in hot water heater which clearly produces enought for our needs. Although we have only been up and running for two weekis, I'm anticipating a low maintenance extremely efficient and problem free system for many years. I got 7 estimates for the job--all A grade contractors from Angie's list--and went with the Farrell Bros because they were willing to meet all my needs and I liked the Triangle Tube system. I'm really glad I did!
Description of Work: There were three parts to this job. The first entailed removing a no longer reliable oil-fired Weil-McLain boiler, its associated 250-gallon oil tank and a 60 gallon hot water tank and peripherials. Part two involved installing a new Triangle-Tube propane fired boiler (with a built in hot water heater), and re-arranging our water softner, its salt tank and our cold water storage tank (we have a well) into a minimal space. The final part involved securing (as it turned out from Suburban Propane) and burrying in our lawn a 500 gallon propane tank, and then hooking it up to the Triangle-Tube system.

I Gave Farrell brothers the exact problem with my furnace. When someone came out I assumed they would be prepared to do the work since I had told them exactly what I needed (I am a contractor). The young guy who came out looked at the problem and then had an extensive conversation with his supervisor to come up with a price. (Why didn't the the person able to give an estimate come out?) He also said he couldn't actually do the work that day since the company truck was in the shop and he was driving his own car and didn't have many tools with him. Told me the cheapest solution would be to cut out the whole duct with the evaporator coil, drain the refrigerant from the system, hope the seals hold on the condenser, remove the evaporator coil, repair it, and then build a new duct around it. If I remember that was a bit more than $700. They work on a fixed price system. I asked why wouldn't you just disconnect the furnace, slide it out from under the plenum (duct) and access the drain pan from below which seemed way less work? He said his boss said they would estimate that approach as the same amount of work as removing an old furnace and installing a new one, which would be 7 hours and therefore more money. I politely imp[lied that was crazy and the guy seemed to agree but couldn't deviate from his boss's estimate. (Again, sent the wrong guy out to do the estimate). I paid him $100 for wasting my time, I mean providing an estimate. I then did the work myself, which I was trying to avoid. It took me 4 hours beginning to end including removing and repairing the cracked drain pan. That is with my random tools laying around the house so I had to jury rig some things, and with my vast experience of installing one furnace in my lifetime (my furnace which is how the drain pan got cracked...) I don't know how these companies get off making up these estimates which are insane. I am not complaining about their rate, or their markup, but they would have charged me for 7 hours of work (fixed price) to do a job that would have taken them less than half of that - AND the guy looking at the project knew that. In the future I would find an independent plumber or HVAC guy who had a good reputation or through a referral rather than pay through the nose for a "name" company.
Description of Work: Came out to provide an estimate for repairing a cracked drain pan below the evaporator coil in my furnace.

Thank you for giving my company an opportunity to evaluate your problem and recommend a solution , I am sorry that you did not agree with our recommended repair or price but not all customers agree with contractors recommendations and that is why we have a service call fee and if the customer chooses not to hire us or they do the work themselves after our evaluation then all they pay is the service call fee and usually everyone is happy. As far as charging by the hour well it was my customers that really want to know the price of their project upfront as you requested so I don't think charging by the hour would be fair seeing the slower you work the more you charge your customer. The fortunate part is that you were able to fix your problem on your own and hopefully everything is working out for you. Randy Rowe President Farrell Brothers Inc.

We are on a service agreement with Farrell Bros to come out twice a year to check everything out. This visit was covered under the agreement. Every technician they have ever sent out has been pleasant and taken the time to explain what they have done and why. Unfortunately, I do not recall what we paid for the yearly contract last fall, but it was fair and well worth the peace of mind.
Description of Work: They came and did the yearly maintenance on the furnace and also tightened up some duct work that was loosening up at the seams.
