We didn't end up using Carl's Air Conditioning & Sheet Metal Inc. because we ended up having our home warranty company take a look at the problem. He was knowledgeable, answered all my questions and was very friendly. I'd have them come out again, if I had problems with my air-conditioning system or anything else.
Description of Work: We received a quote from them to replace our furnace.

Completed a detailed inspection before giving us an estimate. 3 guys completed installation in one day. Stayed late to complete the job. System has worked great since installation. We anticipate saving on our power bill with a higher SEER rating on the compressor. Only negative. One of the installers expressed his unsolicited political views during the installation. Did not happen to match the owner's views. Old adage - don't talk religion or politics with strangers. Again, this is minor. Overall excellent job.

The first batch was good. I needed service right away and I was not able to get them to go out the same day but they are coming out this morning. I was upset about that since I had already paid and only had the option to accept the next date. They are responsive but not enough responsive for me. I think they do fine. The price was fine since it was the special. If I had to pay the regular price it would have not been a good price.

I brought in Carl's air for a second opinion since Carl's is on the approved vendor list for EnergyFit Nevada's GreenChips loan program. The reason I gave Carl's Air a B in responsiveness was Chris, the owner. When I first called I explained that I was calling them for a quote because they are on the list for the GreenChips loan program and that I was pre-qualified. It was difficult to get Chris to agree to schedule an appointment! Apparently his company is very busy, which is certainly understandable; however that is a blessing, not something to be unhappy about. My concerns were instantly nullified when John showed up, on time, on the day agreed upon. John is remarkable. His approach was radically different then the first company that came to do a quote. John came in with air mass sensors, covered all the vents, and did a leak test on the system. This provided hard numbers that he was able to use for additional rebates that I knew nothing about! There are rebates for air return upgrades and also for reducing leaky duct systems. My initial question to John was which of the 2 heat pumps I should replace, since I was limited by the $7500 GreenChips loan amount. His reply was "NEITHER"! John went on to explain that since I have the ceiling removed, renovating the entire 50 year old duct system would cost approximately half of what it would with the ceiling and insulation in place, plus when it comes time for the existing heat pumps to be replaced (and that time IS coming!) they can be fitted to a modern system. Because the existing air returns didn't meet current rebate guidelines, even if I replace the old unit with a 16 seer heat pump, I wouldn't be eligible for certain rebate programs. John also had a great idea on how to fit the new system to the existing heat pump units by fabricating a plate (this is where my technical knowledge comes to a halt) that allowed the 20" system. It's amazing to me - the original 14" system had less than HALF the CFM of the new one! This is using the same old heat pump and blower unit. John's recommendations included system 1: -) moving air vent locations in the living room closer to the heat load (approx 8' for 3 vents) -) upgrading air return to proper size -) replacing old 14" box (don't know the name for it, the piece that attaches directly to the roof-mounted heat pump) -) re-routing duct work to existing vent locations to be more efficient -) removing the duct that went all the way to the opposite end of the house and connecting that to the closer unit! -) putting a larger duct into the kitchen -) sealing and insulating the entire system John's crew removed all the old equipment and re-used a lot of the parts! I was very impressed with that. system 2: basically took the old system out and put a modern one in! -) remove existing "uni-duct" - the kind that runs down a hallway with vents coming off the sides into the rooms. This is the kind of duct that makes you want to duck when you walk into the back half of the house - it lowered the ceiling from 8' (already low) to a little bit over 6'. -) upgrade and move air return to the same part of the house that the system covers. having an air return for system 2 in the area cooled by system 1 didn't make sense -) create a totally new ducting system that brings vents through the ceiling of each room The total quote came out to about 4100.00, and John was able to get 1100$ in rebates! John obviously cared about getting my house to be the most efficient it could be. He went the extra mile to have the testing done a second time, and went to bat with NV energy on a border-line qualifying number. Everything is now tight and less than 2% leaking. Compared to the gross inefficiency that old system had, including 29% and 19% leakage in the old systems, I'm confident that I will use less resource now than in the past. Plus, when it's time to put in new heat pumps, I should see a huge reduction in waste. I definitely recommend Carl's Air.
Description of Work: Air return upgrades on 2 systems, relocate vents to better deal with heat loads, remove old 14" system and replace with 20" system; remove old uni-duct and re-pipe with modern vents to each room. Completely re-do and refurbish 2 existing systems.

i called them to change a fan motor. (preventative maint.) the girl who answered the phone had very little knowledge about their services. had to wait till the next day when they called back. they said they needed to come to my home for 70.00 to diagnose the problem. i asked why i told them exactly what i wanted. i stated that would be ok if the 70.00 would be rolled into the price and they didnt know. but their estimate was higher than anybody else so i presume the total cost would have been 70.00 plus parts and labor. that was to high. went to some else.

Response from Carl's Air Conditioning & Sheet Metal Inc
(member name removed), I apologize that you had this experience. Our receptionist does not know prices of parts. We aren’t in the habit of just giving prices over the phone for service parts either. The reason is, our experience has shown that, usually there is more to it than just what the customer thinks. We have seen parts diagnosed only to find out it’s just a capacitor or wiring etc… If you had a quote from another company then we give free second opinion. But in this case there are many types and sizes of motors and without knowing all that information it is hard to give prices. All of our techs were in the field working when you called. Which is why, you got a call back the next morning. The service manager can be notified to make calls however this wasn’t escalated as an emergency. We receive an average of 100 calls a day for service in the summer and a lot of them are fishing for prices. We are not the cheapest nor are we the highest but we always take care of our customers. We charge a $70.00 diagnostic charge; to do just that, diagnose the problem. At that point the customer can call someone else and shop our price for repair. We don’t roll that into our price as our prices are low (in my opinion). Many companies offer lower diagnostics or deducting if they do the repair but their repair prices are typically higher than mine even with our $70.00 diagnostic. We use flat rate pricing like most of the 400+ a/c contractors in the valley, so we don’t have a parts and labor price as you put. You presumed it would have been too high but again we don’t know, as we didn’t visit your home. I feel this review is not just as we didn’t even go to your home or give you a quote.

We noticed that no cool air was blowing in on a Wednesday afternoon; it was about 100 degrees outside. We walked out to the condenser and could smell the burnt (motor) smell and knew we had to get service right away. I called Carl's first because according to our records, they installed the cooling system in this house 14 years ago, and I like that it lasted that long in this heat. They couldn't get out on Wed., so they kept our name for Thursday morning. Another company (that did the spring check-up in April) came late Wed. said the motor was shot and quoted for the motor and the condenser replacement only. We scheduled 3-4 companies to quote (3 ways: whole system, A/C only, condenser only) on Thursday morning so we could make a decision and arrange the install for Friday or Saturday at the latest. We got 2 quotes in person and one estimate over the phone from other companies. When I called Carl's, they couldn't guarantee that anyone could come before noon Thursday. I was totally stressed out and knew we didn't have time to delay getting the install scheduled. Literally minutes before we were ready to call another company to set up the install, Carl's calls and said a guy is available and on his way. Enrique got here about 2:30, he did a detailed inspection of our whole system first then gave us a competitive bid (not the lowest but close) for replacing the entire system. He did a great job. We hired Carl's because we got the equipment we wanted with an excellent warranty from an established company. The installation was well managed and very professional. Early Friday morning Jesus came and started the disconnect process. A second group of workers soon came and started to dismantle and remove the old system. Then the new system was brought in and installed. In the afternoon Jesus came back to connect and test the new system. He also installed the new thermostat. It was an all day process, but by 4:45 we had cold air! I confirmed my price (with an Angie's list coupon discount) with Patsy in their office. She was very helpful and patient with me and sent our receipt and warranty paperwork right away. I look forward to many years of cool air and good service from Carl's A/C and Sheet Metal.

I give CARL'S AIR-CONDITIONING & SHEET METAL INC. an A rating! If I could give them a higher rating, I would! This company will satisfy all clients from those who need a simple repair or wanting a good system for the least amount of money to those wanting the best and most efficient system with the latest technology.. and everyone in-between. I was somewhere in-between. I had to tell them that I was a detail-minded n*** and wanted to know every little thing they discovered and how they were going to fix everything. Each person was extremely knowledgeable, yet spoke in layman's terms that I easily understood. It was nice to work with professionals who have real pride in their work. They went far above and beyond my highest expectations. Even if you know nothing about your AC unit and/or don't want to know, just tell them roughly what you want and they will give you all the options so you can make an educated decision on what is best for your situation. They will not disappoint you!

I called Carl's to come out and talked to John. He came out and did a full inspection of the job and told me everything including how the electrical out let would have to be moved to make way for the new vent. No one else did that. It was a good thing John told me because the cabinet installers were able to cut all of the holes in the wall and the cabinets to accommodate the new vent.. With out this information there would have been a problem. I did not need the job done right a way because the cabinets would not be installed for another 4-5 weeks. The cabinets came 2 weeks early so I had to scramble to line up all of the workers. I called John 3 days before I needed him and he was at the house on time and ready to work. The work went off with out a hitch. John even had a special part made at the shop so the vent would fit better on the outside of the house. I had told John that I would give him a hand putting the microwave back up but I had to leave for work early. John had a helper come to assist him. When the work was done the entire work area was vacuumed. In the end the kitchen looked like they were never there with the exception of the new vent. The icing on the cake was when I got a 10% off coupon from Angies list that saved me about $80.
Description of Work: We remodeled our kitchen and we wanted to vent the stove outside. I was not going to put in new cabinets and have them get all greasy with the old recirculation fan. I wanted all of the nasty smoke and grease to go outside where it belongs. I called three other companies and they either did not show up or did not look closely at the job to make a proper bid. I wanted the vent to go over the top of the cabinets but the other companies wanted to run the vent through to the roof and that would cost way to much. None of the other companies ever gave me the bid I wanted.

The company got someone out the day we called. The compressor had an internal ground or short and was not repairable. Two techs returned the next day with a replacement. The techs agreed to delay start up until we had another electrical issue resolved. Once that was resolved they returned and started up the unit. I gave these guys a B on cost just because 2 grand is a lot of money but it is probably correct for the part replaced.

We contacted 4 companies to get a wrote on improving air to the master bedroom. It was at least 10 degrees warmer than rest of house. A/C was working but cool air was not reaching master bedroom. Lin Air and AR Heating ( AR Heating was through Fidelity our home warranty policy) both came in and walked out . Said there was nothing they could do. Yes came out and told us there was a leak in the A/C and they needed to cut a hole in the ceiling. Yes also said they could only give us a quote AFTER they cut open the ceiling.Carl's A/C came in, went to each vent in the house and took a reading (no one else even bothered to do this). Carl's Air confirmed there was NO leak and it was not necessary to cut through ceiling! They explained the problem and how they could resolve it. It took 4 hours to repair. Chris and John were terrific. If we had gone through Yes, I can only imagine it would have cost thousands of dollars to repair a problem they diagnosed improperly as well as the cost to repair the ceiling they were planning to cut. Yes is either not competent or they deliberately misdiagnose to increase costs on a project.

After a week of no air conditioning and two AC companies later, AHS decided my problem was not covered under my warranty. I had told AHS when I first reported the problem that I thought the problem was with the damper between my evaporated cooler and ac unit. There was very little cool air coming through the vents into the house. The cool air was going outside through the cooler vents. At 11:00 on a Sunday morning, I went to Angie’s List and started looking for companies which I thought might be able to solve my problem. I emailed two companies hoping one of the two would contact me on Monday. Amazingly two hours later, Scott from Carl’s Air Conditioning and Sheet Metal, Inc., called. After discussing the problem with him, I knew I had found the right company. Scott arrived first thing Monday morning, and 10 minutes later I was looking at the problem. One of the damper flaps had disappeared. He called his office, and the search was on for a new damper. Around 3:00 Scott was back, and the problem was fixed by 3:30. While on the roof, Scott noticed the AC unit had not been sealed properly, and he took care of that too. IF you are looking for an air conditioning company that has been in the valley for forty years and has a friendly, reliable and efficient staff that is able and willing to do what it takes to fix your problem plus more, then call Carl’s Air Conditioning and Sheet Metal, Inc. You will not regret your decision. They are all about getting you cool!
Description of Work: The damper vent between my evaporated cooler and air conditioning unit was replaced. The evaporated cooler was taken apart from the duct work and moved back. Then the old part which had fallen apart was replaced inside the duct work. The cooler was reattached. Scott also caulked all around my ac unit so it would not leak.
