When he repaired the faucet leak, he noted that the shut off valves were old and some of the inner plastic parts had begun to break apart. One larger piece was keeping the shut off valve from closing. He'll be back to replace them.
Description of Work: Second visit for John who repaired a leaky hot water handle on the kitchen faucet. Leak was slow and there was no urgency to repair. It took him a while to get here, but not a problem. When he came he was again very efficient and took care of the leak quickly. He also gave me a pointer on how to stop the Bosch dishwasher from leaking. He suggested I try cleaning the lime buildup inside the washer to see if that would work. I did and it did. No leaks and no charge.

I left Mr. Hawkins a vmail indicating my interest in meeting him and discussing several projects. He responded w/in 2 days (on a Friday, as I recall). We chatted briefly and he stated that he would call the next day and possibly come by as well. Here's where it got strange: he requested that I call him in the morning to remind him to call me! I did not do this. Mr. Hawkins then phoned later that Saturday stating that he would call me the next day (Sunday) to arrange to call again! or come by. I left him a vmail Sunday morning in an attempt to push this forward. I never heard from him again.

Excellent work. Good value for money and honest and reliable.
Description of Work: I discovered John Hawkins Construction two years ago when I moved to Santa Fe. He has been a God send. He is honest, reliable, professional and totally responsive and responsible. I don't use anyone else, but have heard horror stories from other's who use other companies. Unfortunately, I was out of town when my swamp cooler needed winterizing this past fall and the company my friend used to help me out damaged both the swamp cooler and the drip system. John came out and repaired the damage and summerized my cooler. His charges are always reasonable. He is honest and will give you the truth about a repair. It may not be what one wants to hear, but he is always honest and professional. He knows his business. He won't give a low quote just to get a job like other contractors r known to do only to then charge people more downline.

I called John on Monday and left message. He called back late in the day and we set a time for him to come by on Tuesday. He showed up on time and checked out the problem, taking faucet apart to make sure he knew what parts to buy. On Wed he came with parts and repaired the hot valve which seemed to be the problem however, the leak continued. So he returned on Thursday with the part for the cold valve, repaired it and that was that. No more leak. While here he also unclogged the drain in a second tub, something he had not been prepared for in advance. No more clogged drain. He said he's known for being able to fix problems with older houses in town. And I'd say to that - 'yes he can'. He is easy going, while being professional. I have rental property and will be calling him next time there's any kind of problem. This problem was all about plumbing but I'd trust him to work on just about any problem. His charges for the work were certainly appropriate for the work done. Not a bargain basement charge but by no means an over charge either. He was up front with his charges so I knew going in what to expect. Totally satisfactory. The cherry on top of all this came when he called about 6 PM on Thursday to make sure everything was okay. How often does that happen?

punctuality and professionalism were so low that I knew I would not hire him any way. Just ridiculous! He spoiled 3 of my holiday days calling me with his haywire life. I'm glad others have not had this experience -- it was VERY frustrating.
Description of Work: I called on the Thursday before the Memorial Day weekend and asked if John could come give me an estimate some time in the next week. He said yes -- several times. On Friday, he said he would come Saturday afternoon. He called before 9:30 wanting to come immediately. I was walking my dogs and when I called him back at 9:30 ( he was supposed to come late afternoon), it was "too late" and he would come on Sunday. On Sunday he called and said he be there "right now". I said "How long will that be because I am downtown." He said, "I'll just come on Tuesday." I said if he would tell me how long it would take, I would meet him, there "right now". He said no. We exchanged phone calls 12 times. He made excuses and rationalizations. Either he could come in 2 days or he could come right now. Then he couldn't find my street on the map. I kept telling where it was and he couldn't find it. He finally said "Is it S------ Lane?" I said, "well, S----- Lane comes off of Camino S------" my street -- well, he couldn't find it. Then, finally, on the 12th call, when he still can't find the street, he says, "You know that on my website and I charge $65 for an estimate." I said no, that on Angie's List it said his estimates were free. But, however, since he couldn't find my street, he probably would not be able to find the plumbing. It seems, if he charges for estimates, that 1. he would notify people of that on the first call and 2. that he might be more prone to scheduling at the convenience of the customer. I did not ask that he give me an estimate over a holiday weekend -- he was the one that repeatedly suggested it. Also, that his

I did call her 3 times before 9:30, I was running ahead of schedule and to let her know I could be available sooner at her convenience. I did not hear back till later. Again called her Sunday AM to let her know I could visit early on this AM. This was a holiday weekend I was trying to fit in emergency work along with appointments. I had no intentions to get her up set, then she mention she wanted to give be a bad review on Angielist! Later I did call back and apologize for the mix up. I?m still available for her shower work. I live in Albuquerque but needed a plumber for a house in Santa Fe. The first plumber I called after the City said we had an underground leak was John because of the great comments on Angie's List but he was out of town so I contacted my second choice who was very nice and I thought I would be using that company. John called me on Saturday when he returned to Santa Fe and I told him I already had a plumber but he said that if I needed any advice or assistance he would be glad to help. After a lot of confusion and finally getting an estimate from the first company, I did end up needing John's help and I called him Wednesday the following week. He put another job on hold to get our leak repaired quickly and for a price that wouldn't literally break me. In fact, he did everything he could to work with me to get the best result possible for what I could afford to do. My tenant, who is a contractor, also liked him, which tells you a lot. John loves plumbing but he also really likes people. He'll be coming back to re-install the yard hydrant and, although I hope I don't need him for a long time to come after that, I'm so glad I can now say I have a great plumber!

On a Sunday night before leaving on a business trip, I discovered a leak from the roof into the living room. Early Monday morning I called everyone I could think of to recommend a roofer. Finally I joined Angie's list and they sent the names of local tradespeople with high ratings. The first two didn't answer so I left messages. The third name was John's. He not only answered, he gave me the name of his best roofing subcontractor and said to call him as soon as I spoke with him. John said if this gentleman didn't get back to me he'd get someone else to help me. John delivered outstanding service. I will definitely call on him for any projects that require the services of a contractor.

I truly could not be more pleased. What more could I want? John is thorough, knowledgeable, prompt, efficient and ethical. He was also very good about communicating as the job progressed. His 2-man crew worked hard all day while remaining cheerful. And they showed up on time both days- a rarity here! It's worth mentioning that this quality work was completed for less than 1/2 the estimate of another plumber- another Angie's List member with good ratings. I hope I don't need another pricy repair any time soon- but if I do, I'll call John first.
Description of Work: John & his crew repaired a major leak in one of the original outdoor pipes (approx. 30 yrs. old). Rather than break through the 3 feet of concrete atop the leak point, they re-routed pipes, saving time and money.

John took the time to educate me on what he was doing and why, as well as what didn't need to be done and why. He got our heat back on immediately, which is what we needed most. The company we called earlier could not (look for my review on Angie's List). He's now my go-to guy.
Description of Work: I called John Hawkins on Sunday morning to repair my boiler, and he came out within 30 minutes and fixed it. He also educated me on maintenance as well as a couple other plumbing issues that need addressing eventually. No hard sell on additional work (unlike another highly-rated Angie's List plumber I called Saturday).

He came out on a Sunday morning within hours of calling to fix a water filter that had a pretty significant leak. We couldn't find the main shutoff valve so he started to drain the tank and told us to call when it was done. He then came back out when called and fixed the filter. He was willing to work with us on the price, and was very kind and helpful. He's also called a few times since to ensure all was okay. Very highly recommend. Thanks John!!

Preston arrived on time to fix a leaking toilet tank. He was able to fix the problem quickly and asked if there was anything else I needed done. I did show him where the wall to the shower would leak into the tub. He repaired that for me too and it did not take very long. He mentioned other work the company does and there is an excellent chance I will use them again. Since it is a Construction company, there are a variety of services they offer such as dry wall repairs, tile work, plumbing and electric. This is great news for me.

I have a house in Santa Fe, NM I bought in 1972 (probably built in 1960). In the past 41 years I have rented it out some but lived in it more than half the time. There have been leaks through the kitchen ceiling a number of times and although I have replaced the roof several times, most recently in 2010, I felt the ceiling also needed replacing and I worried that there might be mold above it. I called John Hawkins at the beginning of September (2013)after my attempts to interest 3 other (Angie's List recommended) businesses failed to get a visit, an estimate or even, in one case, a response. John came by within 2 days of our contact to examine the project. He had extremely useful comments on what the work would require and some other house issues to consider. H was at that time involved with other projects outside Santa Fe that prevented him from taking on my job. He did, however, recommend other persons for the drywall and electrical. I soon made use of them and found them both economical and excellent workmen. The electrician, in particular, suggested a reconfiguration of the ceiling lights that improved the space immensely. And I was fortunate to find no mold above the ceiling and the old insulation. One very impressive part of John's involvement with the job was that he stayed in contact both with me and the workmen throughout the job to insure rings were going well. I also decided I needed some exterior stucco work done. John again directed me to a plasterer who not only did what we agreed to but, for the same money, did much more. On the basis of the two months of experience with this work and John's part in it, I certainly give him the highest possible recommendation.

I originally found John through Angie's List about a year ago for another project (plaster), and have since contacted him several times for other general contracting services. My most recent call to John came because I needed to get the electrical service upgraded in our older Adobe home from the approximately 50 amp service it had, to a more modern 200 amp. John put me in touch with one of his electricians who performed the work. The work was top notch! I met with the electrician once prior to performing the job, at which point he came to the house and we discussed the work to be done and a rough cost to do it. Within a couple of days I had a formal cost estimate and the paperwork that had to be routed through P.N.M. had already gone through. We set a date for the work, and the electrician showed up and completed the work on time. Both he and his staff were very professional in both dress and attitude. The job was completed on time, and on budget. I would recommend John and his electrician Victor for anyone who needs to have electrical work done.

My realtor referred me to John Hawkins when I told her I wanted some work done on my guesthouse. I had no idea I was going to get a miracle worker! The work he and his lead worker, Alejandro, did was fabulous. Alejandro is a very fastidious and experienced worker. He put up a hip wall that is like an art piece. John also brought in another experienced worker, Paul, to do some cabinet and door work and we could not be more pleased with the results. We were also thrilled with Victor Gutierrez, the electrician and plumber that John brought in. It takes a very good manager/contractor to get the right people to work on a project and John is a very good manager. In addition, he has a very good design sense. He suggested several ideas, for example a pocket door, that we would never have thought of. John is meticulous and he reviewed every detail almost every day of the project. During the project we hit snags with some of the service providers we went through outside of John and he was able to fix every problem we encountered. Even problems not connected with our main project. For example, we had a leak in the bathroom in our main house and called a local plumber who said it was our radiant heat and he would have to tear up our entire floor and rip out our vanity. I mentioned it to John because I was so upset and he said, ?let me look at it.? He found the leak ? a bad valve ? and with his apprentice, Preston had it fixed in a short time. He saved me thousands of dollars and a huge mess. Then we had trouble with another supplier who was doing our counter stone work and sink installation. Without going into the whole deal, John was able to fix some errors on their part and get us quite a nice refund on materials and the labor. We also ran into trouble with our phone/cable provider when they showed up and didn?t have the right equipment and said they couldn?t fix our problem. John took a look, installed a splitter and they came back and were able to fix problem. We hit lots of other snags on the job because of problems in the original guesthouse construction. John could have ignored those and only done what we contracted for but he showed us the problems, explained how they could be fixed and took care of everything. And finally, John made sure everything was cleaned up and even did some landscaping around the guesthouse that looks fabulous. Not to mention a tree that he replanted at the beginning of the project that is doing so well thanks to John?s nurturing. John has been there for me every step of the way and has come running whenever I called him with a problem or new idea. He is the best!!

I contacted John Hawkins via E-mail and he arrived the next day. After discussing the project with John and his lead worker, Alejandro, work began without delay. Alejandro and Enrique did the work quickly enough to please any homeowner, but with a sharp eye for detail and quality. Alejandro is a fastidious worker and has the breadth of experience to complete almost any project: in this case an electrician was called in to install the outdoor outlet. The electrician was Victor Gutierrez of Ino's Electric whose crew did the work quickly and well, running a conduit from the North wall, around the porch to the patio where the outlet post was installed...a distance of about 35 ft. The conduit had to be buried and run under the timber and flagstone of the patio. Meanwhile Alejandro and Enrique placed supports to hold up the porch, then brought in quality timber and a new viga to replace the 50 year old timber that came with the house. They cut and shaped the viga to taper at the upper end so as to fit exactly the new timbers. At the lower end, Alejandro built a brick pedestal to minimize future water contact and rot and installed a sturdy bolt to add support to the column. Alejandro went out of his way to make sure that the ends of each timber dove-tailed exactly with each other. A new porch light was installed and Alejandro cut a groove into the stucco to conceal the electrical line running from near the front door, up the wall and around the porch to its location. The old canale was also pulled out and replaced, then all the stucco was patched and replaced, with careful attention to match the old textures. When the work was completed, they cleaned up, and like previous projects they have done for me, they left the yard looking better and tidier than when they arrived.

He agreed to do it - which was great since it would only result in business for him if we actually purchased the property. And then he did what he said he would, actually a day earlier then promised!.. He called and talk about the wall when he was there, emailed his evaluation and estimate promptly, and was available to answer questions, he was honest about the need for evaluation by a structural engineer to be more certain of the condition of the wall, but also willing to offer his opinion. Seemed trustworthy and easy to work with. (We did not end up buying the property).
