I was very pleased with the end product and thoroughly enjoyed working with John. John converted a bathroom into a laundry/work room that I wanted to be both useful and functional, but also attractive. The project was slightly more complicated than it may sound, because I wanted the plumbing connections maintained but hidden in the event that a future owner wants an additional bathroom again. In the middle of the project, the Santa Fe monsoon season began and we discovered a fairly significant roof leak. John dropped everything, examined the leak, obtained the parts for what turned out to be an incorrectly installed skylight, and fixed it. He also identified and advised on some other items that needed attention in our newly purchased home. Even with the extra work, John came in slightly under budget.

It didn't. I spoke on the phone with Mr. Hawkins several times, explained that my water heater didn't work and I was in a high-stress situation. He said he'd visit my area when he heard from another client down the road and could visit us both at the same day. I explained I needed the work done immediately. He was gruff, said he'd call me back as soon as he heard from the other client. He never did call back.

It went perfectly. Workers arrived on time, got the job done. Mr. Hawkins is a good communicator both explaining what needed to be done and how it would be done and a good listener as to what I needed. It was all done with a minimum of disruption. His crew was terrific... The finished product is beautiful! I look forward to working with Mr. Hawkins on future projects as they arrive.
Description of Work: a. dug out and removed broken deep outdoor hydrant faucet and replaced it. Put gravel base covered with plastic to keep it from getting plugged and covered area with flagstone b. Tore out and hauled off old falling down coyote fence and installed new one c. Jackhammered out a 5' stretch of crumbling concrete and replaced it with flagstone walkway. I might add that Mr. Hawkins has done many things for me including installing a pellet stove and putting in a beautiful brick patio... I AM a repeat customer

,I guess we were expecting at least a return telephone call, especially since it appears he lives in our neighborhood. Our first attempt to book time with him was in July--now it is the end of October. If he is still to busy to return a potential client's phone call, what would be our chances of getting the work completed?

I wish I could of have been of better service, I'm just around the corner from her This year 2015, I had been a 24 x 7 person. I love hearing from members on any issue. All I can say that her cell phone did pass on the two messages. My comments are that with cell phones if you do not get my return call, please call again. The bottom line; I do not count on cell phone service for important issues, mostly with AT&T. Thank you. You can all ways call my wife Carol Hawkins John hawkins 1-505-466-8383

Once again John Hawkins saved me?not only fixing something, but saving me money and time as well!!! My shower wasn?t getting as hot as it usually did and it looked like I was going to have to replace the whole cartridge that regulates the water temperature?almost $200 plus the labor, probably another $300, so I was looking at $500.00?I thought... And then cartridge wouldn?t come out?it was stuck in there and recessed so far in that if we didn?t get it out we would have to break the wall and re-tile and patch?easily $2000.00!!! John was able to remove cartridge (no easy task it turned out) and clean it and reinstall it! He made 4 trips, 2 of which was just changing out the screws and it cost me $260.00! A fraction of what it would normally would cost!!! John knows his stuff (and other?s stuff) better than anyone I know. John will save you too?I recommend him 100%!

I started off working with company John Hawkins and then he kind of hated me off so one of his guys that just works hourly so I am not even working directly with John I just kind of got started with him and then working directly with one of guys that kind of contracted with him. We kind of had difference of opinion and how projects and sort of arrangement should be worked out and some of that did me in the end. The work was good, technically good, but socially not. I had a call from them a week ago saying John was just didn't here and as a tub liner he purchased doing the job yeah they showed up like three weeks ago and it is in my house and using it and they said okay John refuses to pay for it can you gave us your credit information over the phone. John should have called me and said hey by the Jeff I know you are dealing straight with Nick, but this item is outstanding. Technically he was very competent, clearly his stuff, but yet socially he was just kind of like can't believe him the owner of these sort of things. He is actually very responsive for a guy that is pretty much a one man shop with some hourly employees working under him he gets back to you pretty quickly.
Description of Work: I used John Hawkins Construction couple of weeks ago for bathroom model and stuff around the house like new tub, shower, tile floor, some built in cabinet tree, new fixtures that kind of stuff. Just kind of get started and then we decided that the job was kind of straightforward enough and the cheaper way to do is just hire him hourly and let him manage everything.

I called the electrician he recommended and he came out the next day and was totally excellent. Great work great price and I have already recommended him to a friend down the street. If I ever move back into SF or out to Eldorado I most certainly would call John Hawkins again. After he we talked initially and he gave me his recommendation he called back two days later to make sure I had been able to get me electrical problem taken care of. I found him to be sincere and professional.

I contracted my repair with another plumber, Steve Walter of "The Plumbing Company, Steve's Solutions." He was available the next morning. As it turns out Steve knows John well and confirmed the concerns about constant running of a hot water recirculation system. He repaired my system and provided an inexpensive remote control timer ($20) that I've been using since. It's convenient, I keep it handy in my kitchen, and I find that I turn the recirculation on about twice a day for a while in the morning and maybe in the evening for washing dishes or a shower. At other times I don't worry about immediate hot water for hand washing etc. I'm happy with this arrangement and I expect I'm saving energy as well as wear and tear by not having constant hot water flow through the system.
Description of Work: IMPORTANT ADVICE: John Hawkins returned my recent call for emergency service immediately. Though he wasn't available to come right away, and I had to hire another contractor, John offered free unsolicited critical advice for my situation. I had developed a pinhole leak in my copper pipe related to my AUTOMATIC HOT WATER RECIRCULATION SYSTEM. John advised that when the system is left in the constant ON mode the water wears out your pipe from the inside out. In a normal circumstance water flows through pipes for just a fraction of the time in a day when you turn faucets on and off again. John advised that while many people unknowingly leave their hot water recirculation on, they should have a timer (or better yet a remote control timer), to turn the recirculation on only during the times of day when they expected to need it. Otherwise you could be faced with a considerable cost of replacing leaky pipe in hidden areas of the house before the usual life expectancy of plumbing.

Response from John Hawkins Construction
Additional comment regarding AUTOMATIC HOT WATER RE-CIRCULATION SYSTEM. Using timers is ok along as you check them. Often when a new home owner views them and thinks that they are set properly they are not. Here is a recent example of homeowner not checking their device: they had a leak that persisted for one year completely unnoticed. Eventually they saw water coming out of the kitchen cabinet. There was mold everywhere in and behind the cabinets due to pin hole leaks. The expensive and inconvenient lesson in re-circulation water systems was that they thought their plumber set the timer correctly. There are many devices and the best is a unit that only turns the pump on when you need hot water to your bath room and then turns off. Most aqua stats allow water to run almost constantly. They do have a sensor; by the time the hot water returns it has cooled to the point allowing the pump to remain on. Best to check your device and make sure the pump turns off when not needed! The return system uses a lot allot of energy. During the summer months the pump may be set for shorter period of time and during winter it may need to run for a longer time. The Rinnai unit which is a Tankless hot water heater has a built in automatic control for return hot water I.E Comfort or Economy mode setting. At our home when we get up get up in the morning to make coffee we turn the pump on via a spring timer (for about 10 minutes) for the hot water to reach the bath and then it automatically turns off. There is usually residual hot water in the system from it being turned on once :) John Hawkins 1-505-466-8383

Because his reviews on Angie's List were so stunning and he lives near us in a rural part of NM, I expected the best. After he blew through the tiny hole of a disk pulled out of the back of the toilet, the situation appeared to be taken care of, although rather informally in my view. (The problem returned 2 days later.) He then asked to see our furnace room. He said that several things related to the boiler there were installed incorrectly, that he could do all sorts of improvements, and went on a bit about the troubles he saw. All I wanted was to get the toilet fixed. He then called us several times afterwards, gettting our voicemail, and I didn't call back because his level of anxiety was disturbing, his unprofessional handling of our job was suspicious, and I felt for what he did that we were vastly overcharged.
Description of Work: He worked on a toilet that was continuously running.

Response from John Hawkins Construction
I did repair the very old toilet and recommended that she could buy new parts and a water conditioner due to the very hard water. She then said that they had a water conditioner. This is the reason we went to boiler room to check out the system; a Hydroflow S38 (for lime scale). She asked about some other concerns including the heating system and if I would check out two other buildings. I gave her solutions to many questions and to get a second opinion which I supplied several names. I did call her back to make sure everything was OK. If she bought the parts as I mentioned I would have installed them free. Her statement: I'd advise him to simply deal with the problem presented to him. This is my comment: I was there for over one hour helping her and providing solutions for each of her concerns. I would recommend that she use the Angie List Compliant Resolution group. We are allways here to help home owners best we can. John Hawkins 24 x 7 1-505-466-8383

When a flow test showed we had a water leak outside the house our home inspector recommended John. He came over right away to talk about the problem and schedule the work. I appreciated the way he approached the problem and looked for simple solutions first. He was also seemed careful about labor costs so that the resulting bill wasn't inflated unnecessarily. He took care to reduce the impact of trenching on the yard and plants. I would definitely call him again for this kind of project.

Called him Friday. He showed up same day to check it out. Came Saturday morning with helper and jack hammer to punch thru frost. Helper dug big pit uncovering break and covered hole with straw, overnight temps close to 0. Sunday morning John came out with pile of parts. He patched the break with flexible coupling and carefully reinstalled meter can. Refilled hole with straw, dug-out dirt now frozen solid and we'll have to wait for warmer weather to backfill. The use of flexible coupling was wise choice, allowing both ends of pipe to flex, which caused the original break. This job was done on what for most people was a holiday weekend, but John's charge was less than a plumber's usual weekday rate. I am extremely appreciative of his prompt, efficient, and skillful help.

John came just a day after my call (he met me on a Saturday). He examined the floor of the closet. The maintenance man for our office area had left big bags of salt in the closet for years and while they had been removed, some of the salt still remained encrusted onto the concrete and some cables. John surmised that it was the salt that was pulling the moisture into the closet and also corroding the door jam and door (as salt will do). He spent over an hour chiseling the floor with different chisels that he had in his truck until the salt was removed. Then he took a heater from his truck and set it up in the closet so that the closet could dry. He checked back the next day (and so did I). We could see significant improvement. As the office is part of an association, he wrote a letter describing the problem that the poorly stored salt had cause so that we could received reimbursement from the association. He solved a problem that had dragged out over several weeks in just a day. He is professional, prepared, and punctual, and I would definitely call him again.
Description of Work: I needed an excellent problem solver for an area of dampness that had been growing on the floor of an exterior closet (and damaging the door). I had had leak detection work done by another company with confirmation that there were no leaks. Several people had looked at the closet and had not been able to suggest a cause and some had said that they would have to go into or under the concrete to check for a source (which would have been very expensive and messy).

John is on the very high end of professionalism for Santa Fe. He returns calls and shows up when promised. He does have some communication quirks stemming from his busy schedule -- he does not like talking on the phone, does not like using a cell phone, does not like email. Sometimes conversations can be rushed. In person I found him to be easy to deal with, extremely helpful even when it did not benefit him, trustworthy, transparent, and honest. He knows how to do things right and insists upon it; his rates are very competitive and even lower than most though he will do it right and not cut corners so the final price will be right in the middle. He does charge for all his time and even his gas, though I have found in Santa Fe that is not totally unusual, and in the end the amounts charged were reasonable. The best thing about John is that he will go out of his way to refer you to others, give you advice, and help in any way possible. Over time I came to really like John. I have done a lot of construction in my time and I would say he is more "quirky" than most but if you give him a chance you will have a very good end product. I recommend him as the "best value" contractor I have found in Santa Fe -- not the cheapest but probably the cheapest for an end product you can be totally sure about.
