After a major rain storm that eroded a section of the sand bank near our home, I called for an estimate. The service provided was prompt and done well. Bill could see the need to create a natural drainage area to prevent future erosion, following the natural terrain of the area. We were very pleased with the work.

The work was performed by Chris Gleason Landscaping and Bill Whelchel, who are now partners. The cracked 4" thick driveway was removed and replaced with a 5.5" 4,000 PSI slab with remesh. Proper isolation joints were applied where the new slab meets existing concrete and control joints, no less than 1" deep and no more than 10 feet apart were properly cut. Brush finish, perpendicular to the traffic flow, was applied pursuant to the spec. The driveway came out great. The stamped courtyard patio complements the new house stucco and the brick border is expertly installed. We left the plan, tree, and rock selection to Chris and Bill with only minor changes requested. Their landscaping selection and placement is professionally done and esthetically pleasing. The best part is that I don't have to manually water anything now. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Removed, replaced, and expanded driveway; removed courtyard flagstone and replaced with colored stamped concrete; moved irrigation manifold; placed brick border soldier style around grass; added new variety of plants; added gravel and decorative stone; repaired grass irrigation; and added drip system throughout front yard.

.I am extremely pleased with the service provided by this contractor. Brent Dean was the customer interface person. He was most accommodating with excellent communication skills. He was prompt for appointments. He listen carefully to my description of the job that I wanted implemented and provided a detailed sketch of the his interpretation of the job during the first visit. He captured by vision exactly. He followed this with a quote the following day. We communicated mostly by email while I pondered his quote and sought clarification on details. Upon contracting with the company, Brent kept me informed regarding scheduling and my job was completed ahead of the initial schedule. Chris Gleason and his crew showed up promptly on the scheduled date. They were very efficient and fast in performing the job. Again communication was very good as Chris would consult with me on details as the job progressed. One noteworthy example of the professionalism of this company was that Chris suggested a different gravel for one portion of the project from that which was initially agree upon because he felt that the agreed upon gravel had too much dirt in it. This was after the project was almost finished. I appreciated the thoughtfulness since many companies would not have bothered with this. Bottom line is (1) the job was planned well by Brent, (2)communication was excellent throughout, (3) the job was started on time and finished well ahead of schedule, (4) the work crew was just superb in executing the job, (5) cleanup following the job was outstanding. I am happy to recommend this company.

The requested work was performed to my satisfaction and minor punch list items were addressed promptly. Mr. Whelchel made an additional visit to my home to address my concern with what I thought was crab grass but turned out be an old Bermuda infestation that has come back to life. Additional work is pending and I look forward to seeing how the remainder will turn out.

I have to call them back because two of our plants did not live and I want to ask them to replace it but they came and give me a bid for doing more than just what he had paid for and it was way over my head, I did have extra work done. This a rental house of ours and I called them probably in April and said that the plants were not doing well and the told me that the plants have to be watered more at this time of year so he recommended to change the people's watering schedule which they did and then all plants came in very nice except for two and I have to call them. I've been recovering from my surgery so I don't have chance to but we were mostly pleased with it, there were couple of times they said they would call us but they didn't, it was hard to get them and for that I would give them a "B".

This was the best experience for my wife and I, we had called 6 people, 4 of which were from Angie's List, and they didn't bother showing up for the appointments at all. So this was our last quote, and our best quote, beginning to end this was a great experience in dealing with construction of our yard project. The representative showed up and walked me through everything beginning to end, drew up plans on graph paper and I was able to use that for my HOA approval of the project. I have other projects coming up, and will only call one place now. Thank you for a great start to my yard, and for making this a seamless, effortless transaction.

Whelchel Landscaping was delightful to deal with from a customer point of view. When first contacting me this past fall, Brent came over for two hours to discuss my landscaping needs. While not overly familiar with types of plants, he did have multiple catalogs for browsing. From what I could see, the company seems to specialize in desert plants and xeroscaping, but other things were available as well. Brent was careful to write everything down and was willing to make substitutions. For example, when I wasn't interested in five one gallon plants, he offered to replace them with one five gallon plany instead. Because the company did not offer a warranty on plants planted in the fall, Whelchel carried the deal through to the spring. When I contacted them in March, the workmen arrived when expected, brought all plants and materials, and planted all items without leaving a mess. The plants are healthy and are thriving in their new environment. What impressed me the most about Welchel was Marcel, who is in charge of irrigation services. He came out to look at the valves and was concerned because of a lack of pressure. Rather than letting my plants die before we could meet for a more thorough service appointment, Marcel made a special trip out to my house to water the plants every day. When we were able to connect, he rebuilt the valve, checked every pipe and drain, replaced broken parts, checked the water pressure, and did whatever else it took to make the water system work smoothy. Although he was pricey at $80.00 an hour, he worked well and efficiently, and all work was done in three hours. All people at this company were professional and got back to me within 24 hours. Their products were top notch and they clearly took pride in their work. To me, the prices seemed high. I've bought and planted things myself at nurseries and Welchel's prices were almost 50% higher. My understanding is that much of this has to do with the labor and the warranty. But prices aside, Welchel is an excellent business with an excellent staff. If you want the job done right, this is a company worth your time.

I purchased an online deal. He worked a couple of hours and he brought 3 guys out. He said he would call me again and he never called back. He gave me a verbal bid and when he gave me the written bid, it was a 1000 dollars higher. I was not impressed with the guy! They did not finish the expected work totally. This was October. They did 10 hours of work. He said he would call me again to finish up and I have never heard from him since.

$4500.00 ???? Really???? This member bought an Angies list Big Deal coupon for $600.00 and that's the only money they ever paid. The $4500.00 was an estimate I gave them to excavate and haul away approximately 120 Cubic Yards of decomposed granite out of their yard, among other landscape related items, which they never contracted to have done. The estimate was a typed formal proposal by the way , I still have my copy. This review is misleading at best. We gave the member 10 hours of hard work, moving piles of large rocks , cleaning weeds and debris, and tree trimming. I don't think I even charged the member a hauling fee for the load we took to the dump. We are not in the business of ripping people off. We pride ourselves on doing a good job for a fair price. VERY Insulting review.

They did a very good job. They did come back, somethings were not working well and they fixed them. They seemed to respond very well. I was very satisfied with them. Actually the owner of the company does the hands-on work and the guy Whelhel actually does the business aspect of the work, it is kind of backwards in my mind. They did a very good job. They redid the patio, extended it and made it about twice as big. The lawn is beautiful and they are taking care of any breaks or system failures. I do not have a problem with them at all. Once they started, they kept going.

Brent came at the scheduled time, on a Thursday, to give us an estimate. We walked around and pointed out exactly what we needed done. Since we had bids before him, his prices seemed high for the items he mentioned ($275 each for two junipers to be removed?), and he said they contract out the irrigation work to another company (at $90 per hour). He said he would email me a bid for all the work we discussed (minus the irrigation) by Monday, and he would have the irrigation company call us right away to schedule an appt to come out and provide an estimate on that work needed. Over a week later, we have not received his bid, and never heard from the irrigation company. We have scheduled the work to be done by another company.

I would like to clarify that we do NOT subcontract Any work. All of our work is done in house by our own staff. Brent explained to this member that we would have our irrigation tech call her to schedule but we are very busy at the present, and it might be awhile. I am sorry we were not able to get to the job in a more timely fashion. I am happy the member found someone else to do the work, and wish them the best on their landscaping project.

We were new to the area and needed someone to guide us through a complete landscaping of our barren backyard. We sought several estimates before we found Whelchel Landscaping. The salesman, Brent, was on time and ready to help. He walked around our backyard and made extensive notes of our situation. He really listened while I talked about my ideas and helped me with suggestions to enhance our yard. When he finished with his notes, he told me that he would get back to me soon with a design and budget estimate. Brent got back to me within 2 days and came back to the house to show me the estimate. The design schematic was very detailed and incorporated all the things we had spoken about in the previous meeting, plus included new items to enhance the design. Brent's design not only had all the elements we wanted, but added flairs that hadn't occurred to us. When I wanted to add or change elements in the design, Brent was patient and open to my requests. He worked with me to stay within budget and did not pressure me to go overboard. Once we decided to approve the design and move forward with the project, Brent was ready with our paperwork and was quick to get us on the schedule. The project was anticipated to last 1 week and that was right on target. The landscaping crew was efficient and courteous. They came when expected and were helpful when I had questions about the process. Brent came to the site to check the project and see if I had any questions. Once the project was finished, after a few days, I noticed that one of the landscaping sprinkler heads was malfunctioning. I called Brent and he was here ASAP to check out the problem. He got a crew member here right away and the problem sprinkler head was replaced immediately. We are extremely pleased with our experience with Whelchel Landscaping. The company's representatives were professional, courteous and did an amazing job with our backyard landscaping project. ***UPDATE*** August 2013 Our original work was done in October 2012. In mid-August, 2013, we had a malfunction of our irrigation system. I contacted Brent Dean and he had a crew to our home right away. The 2-person crew immediately located the issue and fixed it on the spot. The issue was under warranty, so there was no charge or hassle. I cannot overstate how impressed I am with Whelchel Landscaping. Their customer service is impeccable. Their responsiveness is fast and reliable. I have been 100% pleased with my experience with all the staff at Whelchel and would not hesitate to use them or recommend them in the future.

The crew showed up unexpectedly, however they were ready to work! They cleaned up my overgrown and neglected front and side yard, removed dead or unwanted plants, pruned bushes and trees, and weeded. I received bids from three companies and selected Whelchel Landscaping. Their cost was in line with others and Angie's List reviews were positive. Despite some planning and communication difficulties due in part to my schedule, the work was undertaken on the day we set. We have very high regard for the work foreman, Corey, and his crew. He was very well organized and knowledgeable. The crew worked hard and clean up was excellent, with Corey and a worker spending all day on a cold Saturday finishing up. He was also very committed to the project and to insuring that we were satisfied with the layout, placement of lines and drip emitters, and explained the operation of the zones and timer controls. This was a relatively complex project and Whelchel Landscaping was fully up to the challenge. The company handles many projects larger and more technically demanding than ours yet we felt we received their full attention and expert concern. We recommend the contractor and will use them again when another project comes up.
Description of Work: Replace manual irrigation valves with automatic valves and electronic timer system. Replace PVC system with new poly lines. Run drip lines to all plants and pots in three zones. Install drip system in garden boxes. Install frost-free hydrant. Install water line and faucet in green house, install new line to water feature, install new valve for pool line and system shutoff valve.

Description of Work: Bill Welchel provided a detailed plan for our landscaping and separated the fencing, windsor block wall, gravel and concrete patio as requested. We decided to have them install a 22inch high 40 foot retaining wall and level approximately 400 sq ft of the remaining yard. Bill Whelchel came out the next day to go over the work to be done. After discussion we decided on concrete to be placed in the dirt area. The plan called for slightly sloping the concrete, from a flower bed near the house down to a drainage ditch. I requested he leave a 4x4' area in a corner so I could plant a tree. I also asked to have some old growth removed from the flower beds and have the dirt leveled out there. And I requested that some existing pavers near a flower bed be re-located to the side of the house leading to the gate to the back patio. Shortly after that, Chris, Bill's partner, showed up with his crew, set the forms and poured the concrete. They did an excellent job as the slope was done perfectly, and one edge of the concrete matched up nicely with a pre-existing old concrete area. I liked the way they did the joints, so that the concrete slab was in three equal sections; Chris explained that was to allow room for movement and prevent cracking in the concrete. They came back the next day and cleaned out the flower beds and planted a couple of rosemary plants I had purchased. The re-location of the pavers turned out just as I had wanted, so I was very pleased with that too. Bill, Chris and their team were very courteous, hard-working and helpful and were willing to do whatever it took to accomplish the job satisfactorily.
Description of Work: I contacted Whelchel Landscaping & Construction after seeing their Big Deal special. I had recently bought a townhouse with a small back patio. An old wooden deck had been removed resulting in a dirt area of about 10x18'. There were flower beds on three sides of the dirt area, which needed some cleaning up. Also some pavers needed to be moved from one place to another.

First visit took time to schedule, and then was postponed one day. The representative assured us we could modify the Angies List deal, substituting sizes of plants. In addition to the Angies List deal, we asked for an estimate on a drip irrigation system. The next day we were told there were no substitutions allowed on the Angies List deal, and the prices for the other work were higher than we had been told verbally. When we told the rep that those terms were unacceptable, he went back to his boss and eventually we were allowed to make the substitutions. We finally agreed on what work would be done, and decided what plants we wanted, but it then took a couple weeks to actually begin the work. By that time, the selection of plants at the nurseries was depleted, and we had to settle for less desirable plants. One of the trees that were delivered was totally unacceptable, but they did replace it with a better one. The drip system was not as extensive as I had been told, and I had to purchase supplies and extend it myself. Overall the experience was difficult and frustrating. On the other hand, the cost was within reason, and the end result was acceptable.

Prompt, very friendly and knowledgeable. His understanding of the concrete footing problem was detailed and very helpful. He also discussed with us what items should be done first in our landscaping senario, and helped us decide on which areas to begin with and what should be done for the various stages of landscaping. He was honest in his assessment of what might be done by his company better than others, and what might be just a minimum wage type of project, or one that we could work on slowly ourselves. This helped us keep our costs low and spend the money on what would need his expertise on. He also took care of a leak in our front yard for free! We have not used this company for any work yet simply because of some unexpected situations in our life, but we will definately use them!
Description of Work: We met with Chris Gleason, contractor for Whelchel Landscaping. He did an extensive review of our landscape needs, spending over an hour with us discussing mostly hardscape options. Our backyard doesn't have a drip system yet, so this was the first need discussed, along with basic rocking of the area. (Our yard is nearly a 1/3 acre.) We also discussed a problem with the back wall concrete footing being exposed.

Price was average. Work was well done, and speedy. They came to Los Alamos to do the work, this is a BIG plus since most contractors act like going to Los Alamos is like going to the end of the planet. Clean up and close out was professional. I would recommend this contractor. It took several phone calls to schedule the work and get started, but once we started everything went like clockwork.
