Whelchel Landscaping was professional, punctual and easy to work with. Our project had delays, not related to Whelchel, and they accommodated us as bet they could, ultimately finding workable solutions. Our yard is stunning and we will enjoy it for many years to come. Thank you Whelchel, we will recommend your company whole-heartedly to anyone!!
Description of Work: Backyard pavers and plantings. We had an architect create the plans.
Bill and Ray were easy to work with. They had good ideas, were very accommodating, knowledgable and experienced. The install team (Frank and guys) did an amazing job. They had very high standards, took pride in their work, and were respectful of us and our property. They communicated well. The quality of work was superior. They transformed our backyard into a beautiful area. They installed synthetic grass, lots of pavers, a dry creek bed along with plants and boulders. We highly recommend them for your landscape project.

I would highly recommend Whelchel Landscaping & Construction. It was nothing short of a pleasure working with Dimitri and the entire crew. There were draining concerns in our backyard and they worked through in issue so the new design would drain properly. The crew and foreman were very professional and did outstanding work. Will be doing additional work with them in the Spring. Thanks Whelchel!!
Description of Work: Brand new backyard buildout w/ concrete and pergola
The construction crew worked quickly, were on time, responded to my suggestions, and produced a sold, well-built ramada. They cleaned up after themselves. The landscaping crew also were on time, completed everything quickly, charged the estimated price, and left the site looking just fine. I would use them again and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I asked to have a ramada built and my drip irrigation system extended.

We got bids from several other landscapers, and Welchel were more expensive than some, but went with them mainly because of the design. Demitri was great to work with, and the crew as well. They knew what they were doing and cleaned up each day. There was a big enough crew to get the work done in a timely manner, and they all worked hard the entire time they were here. They were careful and respectful of our home and very pleasant to work with. The yard looks wonderful!. We're glad we picked this company.

Rude, unskilled labor. If you’re a female, expect to be treated like it’s the 1950s. This owner and his staff will disrespect you from start to finish, and don’t even think of asking any questions or making your wishes known, because they will not be respected. Most unprofessional landscape crew I’ve ever encountered. They ruined one of my trees, completely butchered a mature beautiful tree. Did not care and did not ask my wishes. A good metaphor would be the aim most men use when they urinate on a toilet. Pretty sloppy and careless, and don’t give a ****. If you want a poor job done and to feel unsafe, yelled at (no exaggeration) and disrespected on your own property, hire this wanna be landscaper.

Response from Whelchel Landscaping & Construction
Unfortunately we all run into clients periodically, that you will never satisfy. no matter how hard you try. I know we can all relate to having worked for someone or served someone, who feel like they can treat you any way they want to, or talk to you any way they want to because you are working for them. Its unfortunate, but it happens. We removed an old water feature, and installed a beautiful new lawn. I also elevated the canopy on a pear tree, per the clients request. Very few branches were taken to do this. The tree in question looks beautiful. I have pictures of it, if anyone has any doubts. I have been trimming trees, and landscaping for more than 25 years, and have extensive knowledge in this field. Please read our other reviews, and I'm sure you will come to the conclusion, that we care very much about, not only our work, but also our clients.

Perfect. Best crew and best job ever!!
Description of Work: Complete back yard with arena for dog training
Bill made sure to sit down with me several times before work started in the backyard to be sure everyone understood what was going to be done. We went through several iterations after Bill generated a very creative 'blueprint' for our backyard. He was open to our inputs and made the appropriate adjustments prior to his workers arriving. He even gave us the cheaper option of pouring colored concrete for the decks versus going with our more expensive idea of paver stones. All work was completed in about a week with significant progress being made every day. Bill was able to easily add some additional work that we wanted done on our front porch. Follow up appointments were scheduled the next week to ensure the irrigation drip system was working correctly. Bill's team added about a dozen plants to our landscaping and almost all have taken root and budded despite them being planted in February. We are now enjoying our new backyard with a lot less worry about keeping the lawn alive and the plants watered.
Description of Work: We needed a complete relandscaping of our back yard which including the addition of xeriscape, artificial grass, and three concrete deck areas. This was needed after the grass degraded beyond repair and the wooden decks started to crack and/or rot. The irrigation/sprinkler system also needed to be changed to fit the new yard. Work included the movement of a lot of soil to flatten areas and so that small retaining walls could be put in place. We also had new textured concrete poured on our front porch to match the walk path already there. This included the removal of tiles.

They were responsive and on schedule. A crew came in, each with their own tasks and transformed the yard in one week. When something needed fixing, they did so quickly and professional. Appreciate the open communication. Thank you.
Description of Work: Designed and Landscaped backyard. Took existing features and incorporated them into a flowing design that is both low maintenance and colorful. Put in a drip system and guaranteed the plants for 1 year and with the harsh summer last year, a few plants were lost. Put in a turf area that looks inviting and gives that lawn feeling.
Dmitri and his crew were punctual, efficient, courteous, and did a great job. Overall, a great experience with this company. I would not hesitate to recommend them and plan to use them again for future landscaping projects.

Plan was good but probably would not meet HOA restrictions.
Very well! In fact i plan on using this company this spring for my front yard! Working with Shana, the landscape designer, was an absolute pleasure! Shana has great ideas and was very patient with all my questions. My back yard was a disaster zone filled with weeds, goat head burrs and no place for the dogs to play but now its a great hang out zone. I was also very impressed with Whelchel & Gleason because they were willing to fix my damaged irrigation system and modify it for the new yard! I had a few people quote me and this company is the only one to included plants and irrigation in the original quote, and that quote came in about the same as everyone else!! Whelchel & Gleason had been running an offer on Angie's List and they were willing to make the offer work with my bigger landscaping project!!! I was also impressed by the very efficient and friendly work crew and the the simple fact that the owner of the company made it a point to come to my house and introduce himself the morning the crew arrived to start work. I truly believe that says a great deal about a company! I would recommend if someone wants super dog friendly landscaping, to do a bit more research of what you would be better in your yard, especially if you have a male dog. The two things i didn't consider when going through the plans are male dogs mark whatever plants you put in and could destroy them if they are not very hearty, and dogs eat decorative grass! Unfortunatly neither Shana or i considered either one of those during the planning stage and now my one decorative grass has turned into a decorative stump and my yard has acquired a couple of funny dog pee posts ;) That being said i highly recommend this company to anyone considering a small or large landscaping project!!!!!!! I look forward to working with them next spring!

It took two days to complete the job. The most challenging part of the job was laying the flagstones which were set in crusher fines. They planted six 5 gal plants and ten 1 gal plants and installed the drip irrigation for the plants as well. My husband and I are both very happy with the results.
Description of Work: We wanted the back yard behind our wall to be landscaped.
Excellent. The project came out better than we envisioned and the Whelchel Gleason team was a pleasure to worth with. Everyone was professional, knowledgeable and responsive to any questions and/or requests we made throughout the process.
Description of Work: A significant re-landscape of both the front and back yards of our residence. The design included adding 9 trees, a large water feature, new sod in the front and back, new irrigation, new landscape lighting, several yards of Santa Fe Brown stone and the removal and addition of several dozen plants and bushes.

I personally wanted to put a sprinkler system and sod down myself, but I couldn’t due to the fact I had shoulder surgery and was restricted from doing this myself. So, we hired Bill Whelchel to put in our sod & sprinkler system. I asked Bill if they fertilize the sod when they put it in and he stated “it’s like a “placebo” it really doesn’t matter”, and he assured us that the sod will grow great without fertilizing it. Part of the process in laying sod down is to use a starter fertilizer to encourage growth. I knew he was wrong in not wanting to fertilize but he assured us that the grass will grow without it and look great. Well he was wrong. Our sod was put in late March 2016 & Early April 2016 and was 40% green and 60% dormant, a member from his crew set our watering times for each zone to water. I made my first cut 6 weeks after the sod was in and I cut 1/3 off and then fertilized it. After that initial cut I noticed my grass in areas was starting to die, so I called Bill he came out and said that I wasn’t watering adequately and each zones wasn’t getting enough water. I told him (Bill) his crew member set the time and I haven’t touched it since then. Bill re-set each zone so they grass gets the water needed, and this was done early June 2016. In late June 2016 I called Bill again and he came out and saw that the grass was dying if not already dead. Bill once again said it was being watered inadequately. I told Bill that it was being watered from when he last set the timer to in early June. Bill then said he knew someone at Lawn Doctors & have them come out and power seed our lawn, but wouldn’t be able to do so till late August 2016 or Early September 2016 due to the heat. He did this to honor his warranty and he would pay for it. After he left I raked all the dead grass from my yard, which filled 2-50 gallon trash bags. I kept watering with the times Bill set back in late June 2016. The owner from Lawn Doctors showed up mid-August 2016 and looked at the grass and he asked how long the grass was down and I told him since Early April 2016 ( 4 months). I also told him that no fertilizer was ever put down before or after the sod was applied. He sated that it should’ve been added. The owner explained the process of power seeding . Before the Lawn Doctor showed up in Late August 2016 to get started on my yard, Bill showed up and once again stated that I was watering inadequately and that’s why our grass was dying. I once again told Bill that “he” set the timer in early June 2016 and I never touched it. Needless to say that he wouldn’t accept any responsibility and put the blame on the homeowner for “inadequately watering”, especially when "he" was the one that set timer to water for each zone. When Bill turned us over to the Lawn Doctors my wife & I said he was dumping his problem on someone else to fix. Even though Bill offered to pay we felt that he was just passing it off to someone else and he could wash his hands of our problem. Later that day I called and left a message to Bill stating that we will pay the Lawn Doctors and the we will revoke his one year warranty and do whatever we need to do to get our lawn looking good ourselves. We spent a lot of money to have the sprinkler system and sod put in and we feel that Bill as an owner whose company installed our sod decided to take short cuts and not fertilize our grass, especially coming out of winter. Bill stated that for 20 years he’s installed sod without fertilizing and my response to that was that he had been doing it wrong for the past 20 years. I also told Bill that I had talked to other lawn professionals and asked if they put down fertilizer when they lay sod and each company said “YES”. I also mentioned to Bill to go on to YOU TUBE to see the process in preparing to put sod down. Even though Bill was willing to pay Lawn Doctors for his error and poor judgment we decided to pay ourselves and cut any ties to Bill Whelchel and his company. We will never hire Bill to do anything else for us going forward. His crew was great. We feel that Bill Whelchel should've taken out the old sod and put new sod in and add the fertilizer , which is part of the process in laying sod, but instead he dumped us and our problem on another company to fix what he did wrong.

Response from Whelchel Landscaping & Construction
I would like to briefly respond to this members comments. We tilled in over 10 tons of compost into the members yard before installing the sod. That "is" fertilizer. The member may be referring to a chemical sod starter, and no we do not ever use those. I use all organic products. This member simply did not follow my watering instructions, and burned his yard. At one point he flat out told me he was not going to water his yard that much, because sod doesn't require that much water. When someone burns their lawn with lack of water it voids the warranty. Even though the client burned his yard, I was willing to pay the Lawn Dr. to power seed the yard. When the member stated to me that he didn't agree with the Lawn Dr.s water requirements, and argued with me about situation, he told me to leave and he would pay the Lawn Dr. himself. I have lived in the Albuquerque area my whole life, and in 20+ years of landscaping here, I have never been unsuccessful installing a nice lawn. Please refer to all of my other reviews, that are 99% positive.

So so. The design was okay but my partner provided a complete list of plants to incorporate in design and owner did not give list to designer. Therefore, design did not incorporate plants we wanted and we did not use any of design.
I found Whelchel and Gleason on Angie’s List, and they were one of several businesses that did estimates for me. My interactions with their staff were all very positive from the beginning. They listened to what I wanted, made helpful suggestions, answered my never-ending questions, and gave me time to think before making final decisions. A very pleasing design was drawn. The clincher for me in selecting this business was because Bill Whelchel's policy was to get a city permit when required, and the city did require a permit to raise the cement block wall. Getting the permit was a monumental effort working with both the city and the structural engineer, but Bill persevered, and he was successful. His demonstration of integrity throughout that situation and several others before any work was even started gave me confidence that this job was going to go well. The crew was amazing. They were all punctual, courteous, friendly, and one of the hardest working group of men I have ever seen. They worked together well, each one always willing to help another when needed. They genuinely seemed to enjoy one another's company. No job was beneath any of them. Each part of each job was done skillfully, thoroughly, and carefully, as if they were doing it for themselves. They cleaned up well, especially at the end of the project. They obviously had a great deal of experience in all aspects related to this job and took well-deserved pride in their work. My goal in engaging any company is to have the job done well and properly the first time. Whelchel and Gleason was not the least expensive estimate I received, but I chose them because I was confident they would do the job I wanted. I could not have been more pleased! I highly recommend their business.
Description of Work: Re-landscaped and completely transformed the backyard. The backyard was cleared of weeds and neglected plants, which covered almost every square inch. The cement block wall around backyard was reinforced and raised 2’ for privacy, and one section was torn out to provide space and support for a gate to be installed. Concrete was poured to add a patio, extend a sidewalk, and make stairs on a slope between the sidewalk at street level and the sidewalk at house level. Landscape rocks were added in the backyard in a two-color design. All new plants were added in the backyard, and a number of plants were added to the front yard. Irrigation was installed for all new and existing plants.

I unknowingly punctured 2 water lines between the control valve to the sprinklers in my front yard. Had water bubbling up out of the ground and had no time available to fix it myself. Called Whelchel & Gleason Landscape and Construction LLC and had a call back from their repairman Marcel in about an hour. Marcel was at my home within the hour, diagnosed that I had punctured the water lines when I installed a wind spinner in the yard for the wife. Marcel fixed the break, cleared the water lines of debris, and even reinstalled the wind spinner for my wife so it wouldn't interfere with the water line. It was well worth the money to get this fixed and done in about an hour. It would have taken me most of my Saturday to fix this what with the digging, discovering what needed to get fixed, running to the store to get parts, going back to the store for parts I forgot to get, remembering to check the lines for obstructions, etc. Thanks Marcel for a job well done.
Description of Work: Had a broken irrigation line between the control valve and sprinkler heads repaired.
