Dmitri came on time to discuss project. He took measurements and set a time to return with a drawing. This was pleasing and professionally done. Some modifications were made and plants were selected. There was some delay in the start of the work, but a whole team of five or six men came and accomplished the job in one day! They were neat and professional. I had concerns about the crusher-fine gravel used having only seen it online, since a large dog runs in and out, but with water, it has settled in and I love it. It would have been useful to have seen real examples of the gravel beforehand.
Description of Work: Removed grass, brick pavers and edgers and a layer of dirt. Put down plastic covering over yard and metal edging. Planted five new plants. Put down two kinds of gravel.

I originally contacted another large landscaper in Albuquerque about getting a quote on some modifications to my front yard's irrigation system along with some brick work and other odds and ends. This gentleman informed me that the size of the job was too small for his firm at this time of year and referred me to Whelchel and Gleason as they did most of his irrigation work anyway. After leaving several messages, one of Whelchel and Gleason's appraiser's called me back and we arranged a meeting at our home. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do and we went over it pretty extensively. He then departed to work up a quote and upon receiving it, I saw that there were some things missing and some things added that I didn't want. This is to be expected and we agreed to meet again to finalize the plan and price. The Whelchel and Gleason gentleman came back over to our home, we went over the job again in a VERY detailed manner, making minor modifications as necessary and agreed on a final, cash price of approximately $2400. The Whelchel and Gleason appraiser stated that he'd put the job on their job board that afternoon, would swing by the following morning to get half the total cost of the job in cash from me, and they'd likely start on my job inside of 2 weeks. Overall, I was both pleased with the experience and pricing and looking forward to getting this long delayed job underway. Unfortunately, the wheels came off the next morning when the gentleman that we'd been working with from Whelchel and Gleason called me just prior to our scheduled meeting/money hand-off and told me that his boss, Jim Whelchel, didn't agree with his pricing and basically he needed to add about $1100 to the cost of the job. I reminded him that we had already agreed upon the particulars of the job and the final pricing and that we had a deal. He basically told me that there wasn't anything that he could do about the situation as his boss, Bill Whelchel had put the brakes on it. My first instinct was to let it go but after thinking about it for a time, it REALLY bothered me that this company had firmly agreed to a set price for a set amount of work then apparently decided that they weren't going to make enough money on it and attempted to boost the price substantially. I ended up calling and visiting with Mr. Whelchel and the bottom line is that he couldn't/wouldn't do the job for the money that I'd agreed upon with his employee. While I'm not going to equate this to a capitol murder case, I will say that this is VERY bad business and shows a tremendous lack of integrity and honor in their business practices. If one of Mr. Whelchel's employees underbids a job, that is his responsibility to "suck it up" and honor his company's commitment. Even if there was a small loss on the job (which I highly doubt), it is the right thing to do and could have been a learning experience for him and his other employees. Instead, I've wasted several weeks worth of effort and likely wont' be able to get my job done for at least a month or longer now. Very disappointed... Response: While I appreciate the attempt to obfuscate the facts of our interactions, the bottom line is that a verbal contract is just as binding as a written contract in the eyes of the law. Dmitri struck me as a fine young man and I don't have an ill word to say about him other than he's apparently not as well trained as he should have been. Dmitri and I didn't just merely "discuss" the job or possible prices, we agreed on a firm price down to the penny and he was coming back the next morning to collect have of said price in cash. This is as legitimate a "deal" as you can possibly strike, period. When you are the leader of an organization, you empower the people that work for you to go forth and do business for you. If they do well, you congratulate them. If they screw up, you show integrity and honor their agreements and learn from the process. This is both a good leadership and business practice that is sadly missing in some organizations.
Description of Work: Reneged on a previously agreed upon deal.

Response from Whelchel Landscaping & Construction
This is Bill Whelchel responding to this members complaint. I am the owner of the company, that met with this member, there in no Jim Whelchel. My new salesman Dmitri, who originally met with the member sat down with me to put the bid together. He explained to me that we would be installing 1 drip zone to the trees and shrubs in the members front yard, and that the member had three existing valves to work with, 1 that was leaking and had to be fixed. I came up with a fair price based on that information. When Dmitri took the bid back to the member, the member informed Dmitri, he wanted to use all three valves to create 3 drip zones. I understand that Dmitri must have misunderstood him the first time out. Dmitri told him he would have to talk to me to confirm the price. Mind you, this is all taking place in the bidding process, there was never a signed contract, and no exchange of money, "ever". When Dmitri approached me with this, I explained to him that this is a much bigger project, and we would have to obviously charge more to get this done. He called the member, apologized, and explained what I had told him. The member was understandably upset and told Dmitri he no longer wanted to contract. That was fine, nobody was under any obligation at this point, there was never a signed contract. I guess after stewing in this for a day, he called and left me a message. I called him back and offered to meet with him personally to discuss his situation. We met, and I took the time to go through all his irrigation with him, and explained everything that would have to be done to accommodate his landscaping. I also explained to him, that his valve manifold is not to code, his box was full of roots, and in need of repair. He had no interest in fixing these issues. I did explain that I would not honor Dmitri's first estimate, it was just an estimate, not a contract. I know after talking to Dmitri, this member contacted other companies, and found out no one would do that job for any where near the first price quoted, and I'm sorry, but I'm not in the habit of taking a loss on a job to teach my new salesman a lesson.

Wmhile the yard looks very nice the drip irrigation system was in place has been totally destroyed. I brought it Bill Welchel's attention and we met to discuss the problem he said he would correct the drip system. IIt was finally warm enough to check out the drip system and found numerous heads from the drip system missing and parts thrown in the bushes where they were hoping I wouldn't find them. I just did. I also question that there are numerous leaking holes in the main drip system since most of the drip heads and sprayers are missing causing unseen leaks. I would not recommend this service since they did a poor job of restoring the drip system to it's original condition.

It was not in the bid to re due this members 20 year old irrigation system, and we did fix the leaks we found. The drip was left in the bushes where it was found. Nothing was ever hidden from this member, and I hope he enjoys the beautiful walls we were contracted to build.

I received a prompt response to my request for information that I left on their website. Brent delivered the estimate when promised, and was excellent at communicating and responding to me on a timely basis. His customer service skills are top-notch. When the guys came to do the work, they were all very professional, courteous, and hard-working. They knew what was to be done and got right to it. I was impressed that Chris really takes pride in his work and wants to do things right--he and the guys did a great job on the grout for my tumbled brick mow strip. The guys were super about picking up after themselves. A lot of people would not think twice about leaving a mess in your yard, but I could not even tell they were here except for the work they did. When everyone was leaving after completion of the job, Corey and another guy stayed to dig a new trench and reposition one of the sprinklers as he wasn't happy with the way it was working. Again, a lot of people would have just left and not thought twice about it, but these guys take pride in their work and want it to be right. Kudos to Whelchel and Gleason for instilling and encouraging that in their employees!

We are relatively new here, we purchased this house, and there was nothing done to the house, so we had to start from scratch. Whelchel is more of a hard scape person, and not an actual plant person, and so I wasn't happy with the actual plant choices. Overall, the work was fine. We had him do a whole lot, and so we did pay additional. We had major stuff done, including trees and things like that. He needs to know more about plants, or have somebody who knows more about plants. The price was fine. There were something with plants that had to be replaced, but they did that. They built some lovely raised beds for us, and they were told that this was soil for raised beds, but it was not, it was clay, and nothing grows in clay, so I don't know whose fault that is.

Bill Whelchel wasn't the least nor the most expensive estimate we received, but we liked his ideas, his professionalism and opted for his services. We had bought the home in June and the back yard was drastically in need of some TLC. His team moved gravel from an area in our yard where we had sod installed. They placed fabric in all the bedding areas, covered it with existing gravel and made cobble designs around the trees. Essentially they made our back yard pop! We were very pleased with his and his teams professionalism. They arrived on time, when expected and completed the job in one day. The job turned out even better than we imagined, there were no surprises and we couldn't be better pleased. We'd highly recommend Whelchel & Gleason Landscape services.

The work was done to specifications and I was happy with the results. The workmen knew what was going on and were informed as to what needed to be done. The workmen cleaned up the site and did not leave any debris behind. The gate to my back yard was in poor condition before the job started and was in worse condition after the job was complete. I do not consider this to be the full responsibility of the contractor but would have preferred to have no damage resulting. There was a significant lag between the date the contract was finalized and the work was performed. Scheduling the install date took longer than expected. The contractor does not provide a warranty for cracking for contract work. It would have thought that there would be some warranty provided. First 60 or 90 days. At this time, there has been no cracking, so in my case a warranty was not needed.

We purchased a "Big Deal" coupon and they were a bit overwhelmed with the number of people who responded so they weren't as punctual or responsive as we had expected, but they were very professional about the work. When the job was completed there were a few things that weren't quite right. Brent and I surveyed the situation and agreed upon a course of action to improve the final product. Bill Whelchel immediately agreed to our proposal. The changes were made and the outcome is terrific. This company is customer oriented and truly puts its money where its mouth is. There was no standing around or head scratching. Every man on the 6-man crew new exactly what they had to do. It was a pleasure to watch them work. They were all very congenial and pleasant to talk to. It was indeed an extremely good experience and, without any hesitation, I would highly recommend this company to anyone. Brent, the sales person who I originally spoke to, is a delight to converse with and extremely knowledgeable. After the job was complete he came by to inspect the completed job and inquire if I had any issue - of which I had none. If you need landscaping this is the company to call!!

They were wonderful. They had ideas outside of what I was thinking that I ended up implementing because they’re good ideas and recommendations. The concrete and masonry guys cleaned up everyday when they left which was great because it was a mess. The roofers did not clean so much. Whelchel had a sub-contract to do the job so I know that those weren’t his guys. They were someone he hired to come in and to help him out because of the load. The roofers were okay but the concrete and masonry guys were great. The pricing was fair. We had 3 other bids and they came in the middle.

When my wife and I began obtaining estimates for our project some contractors did not show up and the ones that did gave us their vision of the project, and did not consider what we wanted to do to our back yard. When Chris Gleason Landscaping came out, we were impressed with their company from the first interaction. The young man that came out (Dmitri Almanza) to give us an estimate was the ultimate professional. He listened to what we wanted and also made suggestions that were appreciated. He informed us that he would be sending a drawing via e-mail which he did and it was timely. He also followed up with a phone call to ensure we received the drawing. We made various changes throughout the estimate process and Dmitri would always call us back to set up a time to come to our home to review the changes. The day the project began, we were once again impressed with this company. When Chris and his crew got there they were professional, and on time. Chris explained what was going to happen and gave us the time table of the project. The crew impressed us with their hard work and skills. Watching them work, I continued to be impressed with the quality of the company along with professionalism and respectfulness of the crew. They were clean very throughout the project. The project was completed on time, and we were very pleased with the quality of the work. Chris and his crew are commended for the great job and the professionalism they displayed on the project. My wife and I are very pleased with the job that Chris Gleason Landscaping did for us. It began from the first interaction with Dmitri and continued with the actual job that was done by Chris and his great crew. The cost was very reasonable and work was outstanding. We highly recommend them to anyone is who is looking for a great landscaping company. THANK YOU!

They were part of our bids that we were getting for our sidewalks and all that stuff. So we actually moved forward the project as soon as the ground thawed. The lead guy, Brent, was very responsive to us. He actually came by our house during the project, checking with us to make sure that we were happy about how things were going. At one point, he had discussed something with us and we had approved it. When we started seeing how it was been laid out, he would always stop by to make sure we liked what we saw. We told him that it looked smaller than we had imagined and so we discussed, and they were able to even fix those problems throughout the project. The guys were very responsive and that was the biggest plus. That helped us design what we wanted. They were fantastic. We would hire them again and recommend them too.
