I found the associate to be pushy and rude. When he told me that the Plant Nurseries are low on plants this time of the year, and I could wait until March 2013 to fulfill this purchase, I contacted Angie's List to pull out of this deal. I dont have the knowledge of southwestern plants to know what to purchase for my soil and light exposure. When I found out that this company could not provide the information I needed in a customer friendly way and i would have to wait 6 months for the nursery to have a selection of plants suitable, I cancelled my purchase. The warning signals for problems were serious. Ultimately I have to question why this deal would be offered at a time when plants are sparse?
Description of Work: I purchased this landscape package for $400.00 after great reviews of Mr. Whelchel. I was contacted by an associate, who gets no positive review from me. A series of plants were included with this package, and their planting.

I bought two packages through Angies List for plants. My contact was Brent. He was very courteous and helpful throughout the process. We came up with a diagram of where the plants should be placed. They placed sprinklers to each shrub, laid down weed control covering and installed the shrubs. I had river rock placed around all the shrubs. Was worried about the fact that the weather is due to change and that Albuquerque was due for a frost. I was assured by Brent that if the plants didn't survive through the winter, they would be replaced. I was allowed to be very specific about what shrubs I wanted. They didin't limit in any way what choices I picked. The cost went up substantially from their promotion price because I ordered the weed barrier, landscaping rock and added a plant. Still reasonable price. This company knows about customer service and satisfaction. They get it!
Description of Work: I have two elevated flower beds that I was continutlly pulling weeds and certain plants wouldn't survive and I would have to replace them. The soil was not enriched other than planting soil when putting them into the ground. My back yard was sloped, so when the first landscapers came out 14 years ago, they scooped the soil to the sides to create the flower beds and have a more level back yard. A Spanish Broom was planted on each side. Spanish Brooms are beautiful for three weeks and then they look like what they truly are, a weed. We took the Spnaish Brooms out and over the years would add new plants to fill in the beds. Maintenance of the garden was very time consuming. I had hip surgery a year ago and it struck me that I just didn't want to invest my time or energy in gardening.

We had a consultation as to what plants I would want and where I wanted them. I was given some excellent suggestions. They came out about ten later start the project. The men who did the actual planting and drip system arrived on time and did an excellent job. They were very polite and answered any questions I had. It ended up that I wanted one more plant which was supplied within a reasonable amount of time. I would definitely recommend them and would use them again.
Description of Work: Whelchel Landscaping and Construction consulted with me and provided fall landscaping. They planted and provided a drip system for 10 plants.

Two of the projects (cement pad w/ sidewalk & Wall extension with stucco) were done very well. Unfortunately, the primary job of putting down flagstone in a courtyard was done poorly and to this day must be covered with an outdoor area rug. When called about the issue, Bill responded that "the guy has gone back to California" and that I should scrub the area. He then came by to try the scrubbing himself to no avail. I never heard back from Bill as to how he would correct the situation.

The workmanship of this patio was outstanding. The issue this member is refering to, are black spots in the actual flagstone pieces themselves. The black spots the member is refering to, I believe are called " Dendrites", and have nothing to do with the quality of workmanship or products used. Dendrites can be described as a mineral deposit of manganese that has crystalized in a branching pattern. They are sometimes misidentified as fossils because their branching pattern resembles leaves. This is usually a desirable look in flagstone. When the member called me about this, I did try my best to clean the dendrites form the stone. But because they are actually in the stone, they cant be cleaned. I am sorry this member is unhappy with the job, but with nothing being wrong with the workmanship or quality of materials, there is nothing I can do.
I don't even know how to tell you how happy I am with this company! Hiring people to work on my home is always a concern for me. As a single, older female, too often I end up hiring people who turn my problems in to nightmares. This time my problems were turned into my dream. I'm more grateful to Whelchel Landscaping and all their wonderful crew than I could ever explain.I initially contacted Bill on May 10th. He sent his salesman, Brent out the next day to go over everything that needed to be done and give me an estimate. I was very pleased with that first meeting with Brent. He understood the limits of my budget but more importantly he saw my vision for what I hoped the end product would look like. During our first meeting he made drawings of the plan and I gave him a deposit so the job could be put on the schedule. They were booked out about 4 weeks but Brent said if he could get started sooner he'd call. Brent called less than 2 weeks later and said they'd like to get started on the job so on May 22nd Chris Gleason and the crew came and cleared out the entire back yard and moved the wood rack. That same day the started setting up forms for the concrete. The next day they finished setting the forms and prepping for the concrete pour. They were back bright and early the next Tuesday (after Memorial day) and poured both the Aggregate concrete and then later in the day the regular concrete. The synthetic grass needed to be ordered so when that came in on June 8th they were back first thing on June 11th to prep the yard for that and pull the forms from the concrete and on that day they assembled the shade structure. June 12th the synthetic lawn was delivered and installed. The next day the crushed rock was delivered and the work was completed. Every person I was in contact with was professional, courteous, hard working and eager to make sure that I was pleased with their work. Everyone on the crew spoke English which was important to me since it's the only language I speak. Each day they were here Chris Gleason was here at least once to keep an eye on the progress as well as to pitch in where he was needed. Brent also stayed in touch constantly to make sure things were progressing as they should be. Bill himself was here twice also to check on things. I was so pleased with them that I'm already planning on having them back next spring to take the large left over piece of synthetic lawn and add it to my front yard and have them re-landscape it. I would recommend them to everyone!
Description of Work: complete landscaping of my back yard which involved removal of lots of weeds and some building materials and moving a wood rack holding a full cord of wood. The new landscaping consists of crushed rock, Aggregate concrete paths, a 15ft x13ft concrete patio with a Aggregate concrete diamond in the center, capping off the old sprinkler system, running a new drip system around the permitter of the yard and installing a large piece of synthetic lawn.. The job also entailed the crew assembling a 10ft x12ft shade structure I had purchased and moving the wood rack back into place..

Called Bill to request an estimate, didn't receive a call back til about a week later. We finally scheduled an appointment for an estimate, but Bill never showed up, nor did he bother to call to say he wasn't going to make it. I called back the next day to see what the deal was, lo and behold, the call goes to voicemail again. I will not waste anymore time with this company.

It is uncharacteristic of our sales staff to miss an appointment. Our leads are very valuable to us, and we recognize how important time is to our potential clients. Having said that, we are human and mistakes do sometimes happen. It is unfortunate this member did not leave a message when they called back, I most certainly would have tried my best to make it up to them. I am not always able to answer my phone, as I am running a business, and often in meetings. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and want to strongly emphasize this is not typical of our company.

It was perfect overall. They showed up on time. They were very courteous and did a good job.
Description of Work: We used Whelchel Landscaping and Construction to jackhammer the old concrete patio out of the yard, hauled all over the way. Laid down some brick and levelled it. We had a problem with the drains; all the water and raining would just stack up in one corner. They fixed all that drainage situation and re poured the new concrete which was very decorative with brick and it turned out really nice.

Overall, the project went smoothly. We provided Bill with a design concept, which he perfected and adjusted to meet our vision. He offered excellent ideas for both the garden "remodel" and the water feature, which was perfectly scaled to the available space under the shade structure. Bill and his contractor, Chris Gleason, met with us to discuss the plans and procedure necessary to complete the job. An estimate was provided that itemized the tasks and costs. The work began in late November 2011 and was completed in January 2012. Some delays were encountered due to inclemet weather conditions. Even so, the contractor and his team were punctual, conscientious, and pleasant to work with. All old fencing, railroad timbers, and other materials were removed and disposed. The crew kept the work area clean and removed all excess materials at the end of the project.
Description of Work: Services were partitioned into 2 parts. The first was to remove old lattice fencing and to replace it with a new lattice fence bordering two shade structures; and to install a small water feature under one of the shade structures. The second project involved upgrading a "sunken" garden area, which included removing old railroad timbers that formed flower beds and replacing them with custom-designed retainer walls faced with "faux" stone facing. The cinder block wall forming the exterior wall of the garden area also was faced with the "faux" stone facing. A new set of steps was installed that linked the sunken garden to the "grade" level of the yard. A drip irrigationj system was installed on the upper level of the garden area. Santa Fe brown gravel was added to the tiered flower beds to complete the project.

Everything went very well. At the initial visit the guys asked and answered lots of questions, took measurements, talked budget. A few days later they returned with a very professional plan and a line item estimate. The estimate was well within my budget. I signed a contract and the work was begun a few days later. The work was completed in two days. The crew was efficient and professional. I asked for a slight change in the location of one of the trees and they cheerfully moved it to the spot where I wanted it.
Description of Work: Front yard drip irrigation repaired and irrigation run to the backyard. Back and side yards demoed and graded, excess soil and old rock removed, weed barrier installed and covered with rock, plants and trees planted, decorative boulders and rock added, flagstone path installed. Also one plant replaced in front yard and a boulder and some decorative rock added.

I bought a coupon for Mr. Whelchel's landscaping services from Angie's List. He made an appointment with me to come to my house and give me an estimate. He took measurements, listened to my ideas and came back a few days later with plans and an estimate. I agreed to the plans and he gave me an approximate start date, depending on the weather. He called a few days before his crew was able to start. The crew were fast and efficient. They were very pleasant to work with and kept things as neat as they could. The whole project was finished in 3 days. Mr. Whelchel kept in contact with me the whole time to let me know what time the crew would be there, who was coming and what they planned to do each day. He called me when the project was done to make sure everything was okay. He also helped me to get a water rebate with the city. This is a very professional landscaping service and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Lawn was replaced by xeriscaping. Mr. Whelchel surveyed the property then drew up a plan along with the estimate. Sod was removed, existing plants were relocated and rock and drought resistant plants were put in.

The patio cover turned out beautifully, however a problem developed over time. We noticed rain water leaking in at the bottom of the clerestory window above the ledger board where the patio cover was attached to the house. Chris G. came over and looked at the situation and we decided that the structure of the house at that location was not strong enough to support the patio cover. The movement of the structure was causing the leak. He decided that the solution was to detach the patio cover from the house. That required constructing two masonry block columns near the house and a new beam across the top to support that end of the patio cover. The columns were stuccoed and painted to match the house, and the holes in the house were patched. We are very pleased with the results. They went to a lot of expense and effort to solve the problem at no cost to us. We will continue to use this company for our future landscaping needs.

The walls were designed and built structurally sound and with excellent craftsmanship and style. However, the stucco job was completely botched up and had to be redone several times before I was satisfied. To their credit there was never any hassal or arguments on their part to make the job right. Without hesitation they spent what it took in extra material and labor to make me satisfied with the outcome of the job which I now am.

I live out of state and my Father who lives in Albuquerque was in need of a sidewalk along the length of his house. I contacted Bill about the job and was immediately impressed with his professionalism. I had left a message on his phone and he returned the call a short while later. We discussed the scope of the job and made arrangements for him to view the worksite to create an estimate. Once he had provided the estimate and recommendations for the job I decided to go ahead and have the work done by his company. One requirement was that I needed to be present when the work was going to be accomplished. Bill and I agreed on a date and I made travel arrangements. I traveled to Albuquerque as planned with Chris and his crew arriving at the specified date and time. Chris and I went over the job plan and they immediately began work on removing old pavers, gravel, ground prep and setting the forms. His crew was efficient, courteous and very professional. On the following day, Chris and his crew arrived at the time previously specified. They began preparing for the concrete to be poured. The crew put up a protective plastic sheet against the new stucco on the house, once again demonstrating to me their professionalism! Shortly after, the ready mix truck arrived and pouring commenced. Two hours later they had completed the work including all post pour work (smoothing,edging,etc.). On the third and final day, Chris and his crew once again arrived on time. They removed all the forms and graded the existing rocks to the sidewalks edge. They also provided those "little extras" which were not part of the original estimate like setting in a few pavers to meet up with an existing pathway that would match the the height of the new sidewalk. Chris and his crew also did this work around my father?s vegetable garden without disturbing it. The final cost of the job was the exact amount that was on the original estimate. I highly recommend Bill and Chris, I wouldn't hesitate to use their services again in the future!

I received an estimate on the 4th and stated that I knew I waited until the last minute but I was having a graduation party on the 15th. The backyard had two huge mulberry trees with lots of shade and I needed the old dead roots taken out, soil added and sod put in. I wanted a backyard party. I was given a quote and was told he could guarantee I would have it done by the 11th if I could give him an answer by the next day. I called him that evening and Monday morning a crew was here. They cleaned up the yard and tilled it. This was not easy as they had to leave the healthy roots behind as not to kill the trees. A problem was found with my sprinklers. I was told exactly what the problem was and was offered the choice of having my husband fix it himself that evening or having them fix it for $30 which included the parts! I had them do it. Tuesday a load of compost with fertilizer was delivered and those poor men spend a few hours with wheel borrows bringing it to the backyard. They also leveled the yard. They soaked the yard and left for the day. Wednesday morning all the sod was laid. I also received a 1 year guarantee on the lawn as long as I water as directed. The lawn was so beautiful on Sunday & we received so many compliments on our yard. The foreman and crew were the most pleasant and polite men. If they had a question, arrived or left they would let me know. When my husband came home from work they would go over everything they had done. They even tolerated the constant barking from my Chihuahua from the den window. If I need anything like this again this is the crew I am going to call! Thank you Angies list for leading me to them in the 1st place.
Description of Work: The yard was tilled, sprinklers repaired, compost put in and leveled & sod installed. I thought it would take a week but it was done in three days.

From beginning to end, the services Bill Whelchel and his crew provided were top rate! The design was creative and turned out spectacularly. Bill brought a special vision to the project. All materials were of the highest quality and the end result was proof of that. He and his crew did everything as promised including focusing solely on our project during the 3 1/2 days it took to complete it. A dedicated crew was polite, respectful, cheerful and responsive. You could tell that their special talents and skills had been carefully considered and utilized accordingly. We have never seen anyone work as hard! At the completion of the project, they cleaned up both back and front yard thoroughly. I did not have to lift a finger to clean up or adjust anything. Bill brought in a consulting nursery/plant specialist, Mike Dooley. Mike envisioned the type of plants and layout that he would suggest. We were delighted and ended up contracting with him as well. I think it is inspired that Bill has such an association. It helped immensely to pull the entire project together. We have already recommended Bill to a couple of admiring neighbors and friends. And we wouldn't hesitate to use his company for any future project. A great experience!
Description of Work: Removal of sod and plants and transplanting plants in new design. Creation of an extensive stone retaining wall in our backyard. Filling created raised garden area with good soil. Adjusting, moving and adding sprinklers and emitters. Putting in new brick edging in another part of the yard. .This was a very positive experience overall. Bill Whelchel is quite professional and dependable. He gave a realistic estimate which held true. His crew is hard working, courteous, and careful. The experience was a good one. We had a budget that we had to stick to, and what Bill provided us from the start was an itemized estimate of services (sod, irrigation, plantings, hardscaping) that allowed us to pick and choose what was most important and still stay within our budget. His men were hard workers and good communicators. This is perhaps what I was most pleased with. They arrived early, worked all day, and kept me informed of their progress, including any disruptions in the schedule, such as a delay in sod delivery because of a huge rainstorm. Finally, the yard is beautiful. The design was good: child friendly, budget-accomodating, and aesthetically pleasing. It comes with a warranty, which makes me feel secure with its long-term success. I would highly recommend Bill Welchel and his landscaping team.
Description of Work: Our back yard was a dirt lot. We had built a couple of garden boxes and installed a play gym/climber, but we wanted grass. Bill visited our home to discuss our needs/wants for the yard, met with us later to present an estimate, and was hired to to do the job. We have an irrigation well, and Bill acted as an intermediary between us and a well driller and an electrician to get the well operational. Once that was completed, Bill installed an 8-zone irrigation system with drippers for plantings around the edges, bubblers for the garden box, and lawn sprinklers. He brought in some nice soil amendment, tilled it into our existing soil, then laid about 4000 square feet of sod. Finally, they laid a walking path from the house back to the garden boxes with flat sandstone filled with crusher fine and bordered the play area with 4x6" timbers.

Landscaping team was prompt, courteous, and did an excellent job
Description of Work: Designed and poured a concrete patio which extended an existing patio. They came in and moved the existing gravel, leveled off the area, framed it, then on Saturday came back and poured the concrete.
He met with us and was friendly and punctual. He listened to our ideas and came up with a design. We had changes which he made quickly. Once we began work I couldn't believe how fast it went. His workers were all so nice and they did a wonderful job. He came over regularly to check on everything and if there was an issue he had it resolved quickly. The yard turned out beautifully. We LOVE it. We'll definitely use them again when we tackle the front of the house!
Description of Work: Designed landscaping to fit with our idea. Removed existing gravel from yard, added bubble drip system and sprinklers (for grass). Planted trees, shrubs, laid sod. Poured concrete and built pergola to make patio. Set up a fountain, including electrical.

He was very approachable and helpful on the phone and after hearing what my needs were and that I was in Albuquerque (instead of Rio Rancho) recommended that I use someone else. No work done but a professional operation.
Description of Work: In the end, no services were performed because the contact was honest enough to say that he had enough work that he would not be able to get to my simple job in a timely fashion.
