Terry Ostrom Carpentry

Terry is very good at what he does.

He was on time. He did a good job.

I suggested that Mr. Ostrom seal the front door first to give it enough of drying time, which it took approx. 6 hours to dry. Then Mr. Ostrom began sealing with the colored oil base Penifin. Climbing outside to the veranda with his ladder to the wood areas above the windows. Then worked on the wood above the garage, then went to the front porch, finishing up with the large back porch. Mr. Ostrom was quite careful with several potted plants I have on the front and back porches. He did move the pots out of harms way as well as a new grill, and large patio set. He was very careful and clean about his work. All areas were left very clean when he finished. He did a job well done and he finished the work earlier than I had expected as I had done this same work in the past taking me two days to do this work that took him only four and a half to five hours to complete. He was quite careful in using his large drop cloths. When the colored oil dropped onto concrete he immediately cleaned up the drops which had been spilled. I had a particular concrete cleaner that he used to clean up the few areas. Mr. Ostrom is a warm friendly person with much respect for his customer.

We contacted Mr. Ostrom to get an estimate for a wooden fence with a gate. He arrived exactly when he said he would. He provided an estimate which we accepted. At the same time we asked him if he could servicea our two swamp coolers and patch some drywall on a bedroom ceiling. He said he could take care of the swamp coolers and that he had a partner who was an expert in drywall repair. This was on Friday afternoon. He returned the following Monday to take care of the coolers. He cleaned, adjusted and checked them out. He returned the following Friday, 4/29/2011, to erect the fence and brought his partner, Chris Marquez, to help and also to repair the drywall. The work was completed that day. All the work was excellent. The drywall repair was on a ceiling with an orange peel finish. You can't tell where the repair was made. I would highly recommend both people.

Since I've had Terry do some other carpentry work, as well as end-of-season shut down of the swamp cooler and maintenance of it when it's time to turn it on again, I have trusted him, his advice, and work implicitly. From the first phone call until the end of his service to us, he's been the personification of professionalism. He's a very comfortable and trusted person to have come into the house to perform any and all tasks/jobs agreed on. I called Terry, asked if he could repair holes in drywall, rehang towel bars, sand and restain 2 solid wood doors. 'Sure' is almost always his answer. He arrived on the agreed on date, repaired the holes, repaired the ceiling fan pull (had to go to Samon's to get the part to do so), removed, sanded, stained, then rehung the two doors. He tidied up all that needed to be cleaned up and left everything in great order. Excellent job from a complete and personable professional. I highly recommend him to any and all who have need of such a marvelous person.

Terry did a great job installing a door in our laundry room. Reasonably priced, puctual, professional and expertly done in timely fashion. It is currently the smoothest working door in our house. We would be happy to hire him again in the future should the need arise.

Terry and Chris did a wonderful job taking out my old ugly carpet and replacing with beautiful new laminate flooring. Terry and Chris always take pride in their work. I have hired for several jobs and will continue to do so. Thanks so much! I love my new floor.

Called Terry on Tuesday afternoon and he met with us at 6:30pm to look at the job. He removed the door handle to get the correct replacement part prior to leaving. Returned on Wednesday afternoon to complete the job. Completed work quickly and professionally. Workmanship was excellent. My wife is very picky about who she allows to work in our house. She is already making a list of projects that she wants Terry to complete.

I would definitely recommend Terry and Chris for drywall work. They are both very dependable and do quality work.

Terry is dependable, honest and very friendly. He takes pride in his work. We plan on hiring him again next week for some drywall work.

Everything went well. He was a nice guy, and I'm still considering using his services.

Terry was very polite, efficient, and professional. He got us good prices on the doors. When a wrong door was delivered he corrected it with the vendor, then came back the next day to make sure everything was still done promptly. Although he doesn't normally do painting, he agreed to paint the doors he installed. The two interior doors turned out beautifully, and we couldn't be happier with them. However, we wish he would have sanded the front door before staining it. Otherwise, we were quite satisfied with the quality of the work.

Before I hired him, Terry showed up with his coworker, Chris. Both are really polite and professional. They looked at the different projects I have around the house and we decided on an order to proceed. He made the legs first since he was busy but could get them done over the weekend at home. They are a perfect match to those furniture legs that did make the move. He matched the wood very closely and got them routed and cut to look just like the template I provided. He came back a while later to do the pergola. He had never built a pergola and appreciated the plan I gave him. I asked for the long boards that provide shade to be notched so they would stradle the other boards that were supporting them. We agreed on how to fix the work from the previous guy who worked on the pergola. He did a great job attaching the new pergola to the exisiting porch and made the railing on the existing porch safer than it was. He prepped two long boards with the end profile I asked for (curve) and left them for me to decide how far out I wanted the detail to stick out from the pergola. Next day he completed the job. He cleaned everything up and the only evidence that he and Chris had been there was a bit of saw dust between the flagstone and a beautiful pergola. Terry and Chris do really nice work. I have finally found a handyman on Angie's list that I feel I can trust to do good work, give me an honest quote and do the job as if they were doing it for their own home. I have other projects and he will be helping me with those also.

TERRY GAVE USE THE ESTIMATE AND FOR BOTH SOME PAINTING AND REPAIR WORK. HE MADE SOME SUGGESTIONS AND FOLLOWED UP ON THEM. I WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE HIM BACK AGAIN

Terry came out to see our project. We discussed different options for fixing the porch ceilings and decided that the best long-term, and most attractive, option would be to put tongue-in-groove wood siding over the existing sheetrock. Terry sent us an estimate promptly, which did not include staining the wood. We agreed upon a start-date and Terry arranged for the wood to be delivered the morning his job began. Terry hired another man to help him install the ceilings, so they were able to finish both the front and back porches within 4 days. Before beginning the work they cleared everything off the porches (wherever necessary). Their work was very professional with attention to detail. They were careful to line up the seams on the wood nicely and they put trim on all of the edges and seams. The pillars that hold up the porch ceilings are a bit curved and they pieced the trim to fit the curves. They cleaned up after each day's work and even swept up the fallen desert willow blossoms that littered the patio! We are very happy with Terry's work and would recommend him to others.

It went very well, he is very good. I would highly recommend him. Very dependable, very nice person.

Things went well overall. I'll bet the man could hang a door in his sleep. He made it seem effortless.

I think over all the project was done how I wanted, I'm a little miffed about the other wall not getting painted.

Wow!! Terry was great! He worked on a Sunday so new door would be ready for painters on Tuesday. Quick, high grade work. Came back another day and installed storm door. He cleaned everything up and did an excellent job. Very nice and talented, too!

Terry replaced a rotting door frame and re-hung the door. The price was great, he picked up the materials, the work was excellent.

Terry brought Chris Marquez with him, who was also very skilled and conscientious. They started the painting about 10:00 a.m. and were done with everything by about 3:30 p.m. Chris did the doors, and they work great. They worked fast, but also with very good care not to damage adjacent surfaces. For example I found zero stray paint drops afterwards. The trim molding is an excellent match. Without very close examination, one could not tell it wasn't orginal.

Updated 12/15/14: I came to read my old review to see what I had paid for this job -I'm shaking my head at what a deal this was, best money I ever spent. To this day, I'm still happy with the job he did. Four and half years later, I marvel at how the door and frame are tight, the door is hung level (unlike any door on our property). If you didn't know any better, you'd think the building came this way. Forgive the redundancy, best money I ever spent. ------------- Terry is courteous, calm, soft spoken, hard working, a professional craft tradesman with no supervision required. The entire job went smoothly with no stress. The job: I suspected he was too good for the job I had, I was embarrassed to write him but I did. He came all the way from Rio Rancho (I'm in the south valley) for an estimate. He scheduled the job a whole week to ten days sooner than I expected. The job was to frame in a doorway of a metal building and install a regular door instead. This was to replace a 6' x 8' overhead door that was broken. He'd never done a job like this. I supplied all materials except the door. I had plenty of good lumber and metal laying around. I wish I'd taken a before and after photo. He didn't do what I expected, his way looked BETTER. He removed all the metal siding from above the door, framed it lower to fit the new door and cut new pieces of metal -and installed them- to match. He understood what I wanted and kept my budget in mind. He didn't try to persuade me to finish it off pretty like. That's not what I needed and he respected that. Materials: I needed a door. He went and picked one out and custom ordered it -an entirely appropriate serviceable model- from Pat's doors on 2nd street (btw, the pine sol in there is so thick it'll make your eyes water, at least it did on a Monday morning). He followed up and told me how to pay for it and when to pick it up. The only downside is that he didn't think to buy or bring a door knob and lock for the door. It was okay tho because I already had a brand new one which he did install. Costs: By this time I had a good idea he'd stick to the estimate he gave me but the final price was 20% lower. I was surprised and very pleased. If you want the consummate craftsman who delivers what he promises, when he promises and at the cost he promises, look no further. I believe in giving a tradesman as optimal an environment as is possible to work in (clean and clear of debris). I provide coffee/beverages, and a healthy sandwich for lunch. I leave them alone to do their job and check in once in awhile to see if they need anything. If that's how you are, you can hire Terry with confidence.

Everything Terry did was professional and clean. I was very pleased with his work and service.

When I left my first voicemail I heard back from Terry within a couple hours. He came by that night to look at what needed to be done and gave an estimate. He was in progress on another several day job but said he'd call as soon as he had a break. He called back about 3 days later and said he could come the next day. Terry's specialty is trimwork but is a great painter and can really take on nearly any handyman task. He strikes a perfect balance between being a perfectionist and not taking too long to get things done. His charges were the same as his estimates. He actually seems to enjoy working. We've had a hard time with getting basic maintenance work done in this area and are really excited to have found Terry on Angie's List.
