Engel Coatings

The 2 workmen showed up promptly on the start date and every day until the job was complete. They were courteous and professional in appearance. Both workers paid very close attention to detail in every phase of the project. Engel Coatings did not skimp on the amount of coatings used and my wife and I are both very pleased with the way the house looks. The crew also cleaned up after the job completely. I received 3 estimates before contracting with Engel and their price was in between the other 2 companies. I would definitely use Engel Coatings in the future and highly recommend them to anyone needing roof coating or stucco work.

The recoating job was well done and very professional. We were very pleased. Our only disappointments involved communication issues. 1. Following the initial pricing quote, I tried to clarify the discounts we discussed (including an Angie's List member discount and a neighbor referral discount). I emailed John Engle at the address he provided and laid out my understandings. My intent was to get Mr. Engle's commitment to whatever discounts he was going to apply and the estimated amount of savings for each, including a final written estimate. I never received a response to my email. Phone calls got a better response, often with (unannounced) face-to-face visits. However, my written price clarification was never provided. Ultimately, we were billed only $100 more than the original quote: a reasonable overage considering the size of the job, although I have no idea if or what discounts were applied 2. The Engle Coatings on-site crew was very professional and hard working. However, they arrived (unannounced) to begin the project about a week earlier than expected. This would have been OK, except that my husband and I were installing protection for our beloved courtyard & patio landscaping, ourselves, and were only part way done when the crew arrived. That miscommunication made for a tough couple days for us as we rushed to complete our work.

John Engel was very professional in his approach to identify the required activities and generating an estimate for the work. The estimate detailed specific actions that would be implemented during the work activity (See "What Did the provider do?" above). He also provided over 20 references of persons for whom he had completed jobs. John's team arrived daily at the agreed start time. They completed the job on-time. John's team leader was very knowledgeable and detail oriented thus ensuring a quality performance by his team. John was very accommodating during the entire process. I have no reservations in highly recommending Engel's Coating.

We solicited estimates from various painting contractors after our initial stucco/paint started to fail, less than 10 years after we were in our new home. Our building contractor contacted the original painting contractor who bid on the job and offered a 10 year warranty. Ironically, that company was unwilling to stand behind their original less-than-10-year old job, so we declined to hire them again. Engel Coating was not the lowest bidder, but had come highly recommended by a local realtor whose son is also a respected building contractor. A second unrelated recommendation had come from a house inspector whose services we had used when refinancing. Engel Coating also offered a 10 year warranty. The job was completed in November, 2009. Initially it looked good, but within 2 years, it looked awful. There were lines and cracks and sags all over the house, the color was horribly streaked and the fading was so severe it looked as if the north and south sides of the house had been painted two different colors. We contacted Engel early in 2012, and the nightmare began. The product was Kwal, and Kwal agreed that the product had failed. Kwal was willing to supply replacement product for free, but would not pay for Engel's labor. We went round and round and round. Kwal showed us their warranty - their agreement was to provide replacement product. Engel was holding out for them to pay for the labor. We sympathized with Engel, but as far as we were concerned, Engel had provided us with a 10-year warranty and would have to work it out. Getting anyone to communicate was like pulling teeth. We sent email after email. We were even approached by another customer who had had a similar experience and wanted us to join him in a lawsuit. We declined. After over a year of getting nowhere, in the fall of 2013, we received a call out of the blue that a crew from Engel was on their way to our house that very day to pressure wash it to prepare to repaint it. We we very surprised and pleased to finally have some movement. Engel had agreed to pay for the labor and Kwal would provide the materials. So after nearly 2 years of wrangling, they were going to honor their warranty. The crew came and washed the house, which made the streaking worse, but we were okay with that, since it was finally going to be repainted. But within a few hours of washing, John Engel came by and said that their assessment was that repainting was not going to solve the problem. The house needed to be restuccoed. And that was not something they did. We would need to employ a stucco contractor. 1. If they had repainted when we initially reported the problem, the stucco wouldn't have deteriorated to the point that it needed to be replaced. 2. How could we be sure it really needed to be replaced or that this wasn't just a ploy to allow them not to do the job so they wouldn't have to provide uncompensated labor? We had considered hiring them to repaint the interior of the house - and since Kwal was now off the hook for providing paint, we wondered if they would instead provide paint for the interior. The answer was yes. But Engel didn't offer any sort of compensation. Their estimate for repainting the interior was high in our view. Also, when we asked for a clear, written warranty for this second round of work, we were told we would just have to "trust us." Here's what we trust. A job that failed, endless delays, and finally not doing the job at all. Disappointed doesn't begin to cover it. We have been told repeatedly that John Engel is a good, hard-working, and honest man. He was unfailingly polite and cordial to us when we could get him to communicate. We gave him the benefit of the doubt. But we would not hire him again.

I did not want the house "painted" and for various reasons went the more expensive route of re-stuccoing my home. John Engel was easy to deal with, knowledgeable, professional and fair. True to his word he made sure I was 100% satisfied with the work. The stucco crew knew their trade, were respectful, considerate and did the job right. They repaired some old stucco and "blended in" around new windows installed a month earlier. They Installed weep screed. Using quality materials by Sto the old stucco was leveled with a "grey coat" and an elastomeric color coat stucco was applied. Beautiful results. The job site was left as clean as can be expected. The trim painting was done well enough and anything I found needing touch up was corrected. The foreman of the paint crew was skilled and made sure I was happy with the results. There is nothing negative to report. I could have had the work done for several thousand less but that written estimate left off important details that were specifically and clearly discussed, i.e. weep screed and specified materials. That made me uneasy since I had seen a lower quality stucco bucket in the back of their truck. Other bids were more or less then Engel Coatings' but John struck me as someone who would do the work right and I liked his frankness. John paid attention to details throughout the entire process, did not rush the job when weather conditions were marginal and offered wise suggestions on color details. We have gotten compliments from friends, neighbors, the postman and strangers on how nice the house looks. Considering the quality of the results I am glad Engel Coatings did the work.

Called and left message 4 times over a two week period. Never returned call. Would avoid at all cost.

Workers did an excellent job. I was satisfied with work completed; no concerns noted. Did ask about the 5% discount as noted on Angie's list. However, did not recieve the discount.

John provided a fast service to perform the repairs, and then had his crew apply the new stucco color coat. I would recommend him to others.

Not having heard from this company as requested, I have met with and hired another contractor to do the work.

John Engel responded to my telephone call promptly and came right out to get information for an estimate, which he emailed to me, along with his BBB report (A+) and many, many references. I did not need to check references, as I already knew of their work and long-time reputation in the community. They arrived on time & went to work right away - very professional for both jobs. They have certainly earned their great reputation in this community! I could not be happier with their work. All workers were responsive to my questions, friendly and courteous. I would DEFINITELY have them back again. I'm already planning for the next time!

John engel was great to deal with, timely, and pleasant. The guys working the job were also overall good people, who worked hard, and made sure everything was perfect. The result was above and beyond my expectations, and I would recommend them to anyone.

Once the job started it went very smoothly. This was an unusual job and required a unique solution. The resulting solution to the problem was well executed, so that the stucco appearance is well blended and does not look like a repair. The only bad thing was that it took almost two months from my original call to the finished job.

The workmen arrived early every morning and worked for the first two days repairing the many cracks and damaged areas of our 21 year old house. They were meticulous in the repairs and in their cleanup. I selected the quality stucco color at Sherwin Williams and each day more was completed. Each evening, I went around the house looking for areas they missed and marking them with blue painter's tape. The next morning, they would touch up all the marked areas. ***Aside from the beautiful new home we have now, our electric bills dropped $30/month. It has been a year and a half of lower electric bills and we are very happy with it. (This company's work is worth the extra money. When we had ours done, another company re-stuccoed a house on our street and it was very poorly done. There are several spots that weren't covered and the white stucco is white on the front of the house and yellow on the back of the house.)

Crew did not feather in new stucco very well, and they didn't tie new mesh to the existing mesh very well. When we called Engle, to ask them to better feather out the new work, the crew came back the next day and washed the windows. That's all- washed the windows.

They repaired all of the parapets, walls, corners, and sealed the house. They were very clean and unobtrusive. the only time I knew they were there was when I saw them. John is a great professional and I will use Engle coatings and recommend them to my friends and neighbor's Thanks John, thanks Angie .

Our home was in need of extensive stucco repair and recoating/painting. In addition, we wanted to undertake several other home improvement projects in conjunction with this work. In the process of looking over our house, Mr. Engel suggested we have a roofer examine our home, and he offered us an excellent personal recommendation for Philip Hughes of Ridgetop Construction. It turned out we had hail damage we did not know about. Our insurance paid off and we are having our roof replaced, all thanks to Mr. Engel?s knowledge and foresight to warn us of a developing problem we didn?t even know we had. Mr. Engel also offered other valuable suggestions about how best to approach the needed repairs of our home and explained some of the construction techniques unique to our home that presented extra challenges to the work we wanted to have done. Ultimately, we decided to work with a general contractor to facilitate the multiple simultaneous projects we had planned, but even though Mr. Engel ended up not doing the work at our home for which he gave us an estimate, we would not hesitate to recommend him to others who need painting and stucco work. His knowledge is clearly extensive and his professionalism, as you can see elsewhere on Angie?s List and as I?ve heard personally from others, is beyond reproach.

Very courteous, friendly and efficient crew. Extremely satisfied with results. John was very accommodating with our special requests as the job progressed, including removing an unwanted wet bar (which required bringing in a plumber) and other minor things. The affected areas were beautifully repaired. The additional tasks were done cheerfully, and the extra work did not cause any surprises in the cost of the job. Our neighbors seem to like the way the homes look. Both homes look better than ever.

The initial quote was for a lot more work. What I wanted done would have cost too much money right now, so I just went with the repairs that needed to be taken care of. I hired Engel Coatings to repair my front wall (stucco and paint) that was cracking badly due to a shoty job done by my home builder, refinish my front door, fill in cracks and stain exterior wood and replace wood in side gate and repaint side gate. The end result was much better than expected. I am so used to average to below average work from people here in the Las Cruces area that I have come to expect less than perfect work, but Engel Coatings changed all that. After they did the initial work that I hired them for, I asked them to return to do another small job for me, and truthfully, I couldn't have been happier with the results. I'm very happy with the work performed and will definitely use them again.

The 2 person crew arrived on time and completed the job with professionalism. They cleaned up each day and left the yard clean at the end of the project.

John provided quotes promptly via email (which I like). Once we agreed on what was to be done and his crew started, I left town for a few weeks. I left the garage door opener so that they could store their Elastek and paint buckets securely. My spouse reminded John's crew about two items in our agreement. When I returned, it was done, looks terrific, rain water flows farther from the house, and does not stay on the stucco . Some roof areas need a final coat where he and his crew have been meticulous to use puddle plaster to allow some of the areas in front of the canales to drain better.

Mr. Engel was very prompt in giving us an estimate. His was the middle estimate of three, and we felt it was the most reasonable for the quality work we expected. After we hired him, it was about 3 weeks before his crew could begin as they had other jobs to complete before ours. The crew arrived on the appointed day and began masking windows and makings repairs to the parapets and some other extensive damage (this was the original stucco). Once the repairs were completed, the crew primed and then painted with two coats of elastomeric paint. They did final touch-ups and cleaned the yard, patios and courtyard so that we couldn't tell they had been there. Mr. Engel did a final inspection and made two touchups himself. Our house looks brand new! Beautiful work! Neighbors have commented about how lovely it is. We couldn't be more pleased. The crew was excellent. We especially enjoyed working with John and Ricky. The entire crew is dedicated to perfection it seems. They tell me John Engel is a good boss to work for and pays well and fairly. He also treats them well and respects the work they do. I think that's one reason they do such excellent work. This is very important to us. Overall, we highly recommend Engel Coatings! They do great work for a fair price and are great to deal with. Highly recommended!
