I had used Air Group in the past, since they were the original installers of the air conditioning system in my house. Called them when my upstairs zone air conditioning was not working. A technician arrived on Saturday, and informed me that there was no refrigerant in the system, and it was likely a leak. He said that in order to pinpoint where the leak was, he would have to put in expensive refrigerant, and also use dye to figure it out,and when all was said and done, the testing alone would cost $1,300. He asked how old the system was, and I told him 9 - 10 years at the most. He told me I should speak to a sales representative to determine the cost or replacing the entire system, which he said might be the best course of action since the unit was so "old," and said that he would have one get in touch with me. He also said that if I agreed to buy a whole new system, they might be able to provide the system with refrigerant to tide us through the hot weather until they were able to install the new unit. On Monday, I got a call from an Air Group sales representative, who arranged to come out on Tuesday. I called him when he was 1-1/2 hours late for the appointment, and he apologized for being late, saying that it was because of his "allergies!" He then came out, inspected the system visually, and told me there was "probably" a leak inside the house somewhere, and that the best course was to replace the system. He would send me a quote for that. Two days later, on Thursday, I got a quote from Air Group quoting $6,000+ for a Carrier System, and $5,000+ for an lesser brand. I then (belatedly) went to Angie's List, and found a reviewer who had the EXACT same experience as me. This reviewer then called another company, and I decided to do the same on Friday. When the local servicer arrived, he informed me that my AC unit should last for 15 - 20 years, and it was early for it to break down completely. He used soapy water on the outside unit to test for leaks, and found there was a leak on an aluminum part that could not be repaired. The cost of the testing for the leak was $309 (contrast that to the $1,300 testing fee cited by Air Group)! He then said he would have their office call me to give me a quote on a new coil, or alternatively, a new outside unit (not an entire replacement of the system). He also informed me that filling it with refrigerant to "tide us over" (as Air Group had suggested) was not possible, since the leak was so big we would have run out of refrigerant in two hours. SO FAR, I HAVE LOST ONE WEEK OF TIME GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH AIR GROUP, IN HOT WEATHER, ALL BECAUSE THEY WANTED ME TO REPLACE AN ENTIRE SYSTEM. They never tested the outside unit to determine where the leak was, but simply "surmised" it was inside the house, and therefore the entire system had to be replaced at a cost of $5 - 6,000+. Needless to say, I am going with the local servicer, but I think people should be warned about Air Group.

I saw their trucks in the neighborhood 2 years ago, and decided to have a my AC system serviced to prevent any issues down the line. The service was working, but since the summers were getting hotter I wanted to make sure that everything was up to spec. A technician arrived within a few days and indicated that our AC pan in the attic was corroded but other than that they system appeared to be in good working condition. About a week later, for the first time since I owned the house, the AC stopped working. We called The Air Group to come back and a technician arrived. He said that it appeared that there was a leak in our cooling system. He asked if I wanted him to put dye in the system to check for a leak, I said I guess so. He said the cost would be about $500 and then it would cost $300 - $400 to come back and check for the leak, which could be in days, weeks or months and might require the replacement of the Outdoor Unit at a cost of over a $1000. When he was finished adding the dye to the system, he asked for $900 and I asked why it wasn't $500. He said he was collecting for the return visit. I told him I didn't want to pay for the return visit until it happened and he immediately backed off and said I could just pay the $500. I thought this was odd. A week later, the system was dead again and I was beginning to feel like I was become an unfortunate sponsor of The Air Group. I decided to call a local AC guy who arrived promptly. I told him the system seems to have a leak and what the Air Group had done to date. He indicated that dye is not the best thing to put into an AC system and may reduce it's life. He then opened my outdoor unit and sprayed some soapy water on the coils. Immediately, he found the leak, soldered the coil and filled the unit with coolant. It has worked well for the past 2 years. I'm left with the feeling that The Air Group is a large company with tremendous overhead and they need to work hard to "feed the beast". This was the second time I attempted to use them. The first was when I purchased an office building in Boonton and I asked for 3 quotes to install central AC in the top 2 floors. One quote came in around $4,000, the second around $5000 and the Air Group came in over $20,000! Needless to say I went with the cheaper quote and six years in, I've had no issues with the AC units. On a final note, my neighbors seem to be happy with them. Usually there are 5 Air Group trucks parked on the street for a day or two. I always wind up asking myself what they need with that many men and so many trucks. I'm sure a sole proprietor could do the work with 1 truck and an assistant. But, I guess if you have all that overhead, you have to find a reason to bill for it and someone who's willing to pay. I no longer am.
Description of Work: Attempted to use them for routine service to AC unit. Results were poor.

I called this morning and was given an appointment for today between 2-6. Anthony arrived at 2:30 Anthony was very polite, including things like putting on 'cloth booties' over his shoes to not bring dirt in my house. After inspecting the furnace, he tells me he has "bad news - I needed a new Blower Motor, Blower Wheel and Capacitor - and the repair will be about $ 700. He said he put a call into to the office to get the actual cost. After they call, he tells me that it's $ 846 - and they could do it within the next few days. He then finishes servicing my A/C, and comes with paperwork for me to sign. Again, he is very polite. While explaining it all to me, I ask additional questions. I asked him what would happen if I don't get it repaired now. He then tells me, it really is preventative and I could wait until my A/C stops working - and that could be in a month or in a few years. He tells me that he would get in trouble for not tell me about a potentially impending problem, and then I called a week after the annual service to tell them that there was a problem. He said the fee would be the same, but I would just have to pay an additional $ 69 service call fee. I thanked him and told him I would get back to Air Group about proceeding, or not, with the repair. I then called Air Group, told them I wanted to cancel my $ 325 annual service contract, but would pay $ 193 for today's service. NOTE: While Air Group was here, I happen to have "All NJ Appliance Repair' here servicing my oven (igniter switch) - not a great day - but that only cost $ 200) He discretely told me (before Anthony admitted to me) that I really didn't need repair to my A/C done - and if I did in the future his price would be less than Air Group. I've used ALL NJ Appliance Repair before- they are always prompt, reliable and reasonable. I was told they charge $ 79 for an annual service of my furnace or A/C - Suffice to say, I will be using All NJ Appliance Repair in the future!

Thank you for your comments. Please be assured that our technician handled this case properly. The appointment was for preventive maintenance -- and his suggestion for the blower motor / capacitor was just that -- preventive. As he explained to you, the repair is not immediately necessary but will prevent an unexpected breakdown in the near future -- that's all. It is not unusual for the motor wheel to be off balance in a 15 year old unit. We do believe our quote is in line -- but, we feel that it is irresponsible for an appliance company to say that the parts did not need to be replaced without checking the system himself. We can certainly appreciate another company trying to solicit new business for themselves. (Just as the $200 that you were charged for your ignitor switch must have included way more than just the part - which retails for much less.) We wish you all the best for you and your home and we thank you for inviting us into your home.

A/C install was several years ago. They took 2 days to complete the job, with a minimum of disruption. Had a couple of call-backs for air-flow adjustments to get temperatures balanced. Heating was installed 4 years ago, also without major problems. However, after install, the system blew fuses at the most inopportune times on 3 occasions. After several service calls - where they just replaced the fuse - they sent their best tech to diagnose, solve the problem, and install a relay as the remedy. He did a great job and we've had no problems since. This final fix was performed at no charge to me.

I went with another vendor and am happy. I will still use airgroup for yearly maintenance.
Description of Work: Do not use them to install a natural gas generator. I received a quote for them that was 3k higher than 2 other companies. I warn anyone who calls a place and they send a sales guy/survey guy out. The price they will give you will be about 30% higher. I feel foolish that I used them in the past for a couple big projects. They also would never do a breakdown. I could never get an itemized statement for the cost of the generator, for additional electrical wire needed for my placement for the generator, plumber gas line installation. It was always “it will be about 10k” and about our company reputation. I do agree they stand behind their work, but their markup is too high!

In the generator business, you are very rarely comparing apples to apples. We are a self-contained company, doing the installation from start to finish with NO subcontractors -- which means we are licensed plumbers, electricians and contractors. We also include items that are necessary in our climate, like the cold-start kit and a remote monitor, for the homeowners convenience. Our salesman visits your home to ensure that you have the correct sized generator to power the circuits you desire. This was the same salesman that suggested the NJHP audit for your home and took you through the entire process, securing your rebate & financing. We are glad that you have installed your generator and we hope that you enjoy the convenience of a standby generator. We are sorry that we lost your generator business, but we are happy to continue our relationship for your A/C maintenance. Thank You!

Overall, it was fine. I really wanted a little more investigation for my $125 service fee, but he said he couldn't do anymore investigation until I paid the $116 for the part he said needed replacing. So, it is what it is.
Description of Work: My Steam boiler stopped working. Technician came out, determined the issue was with the pilot light thingee and replaced it. He wasn't the friendliest guy in the world and tried to get him to troubleshoot a little more thoroughly before his determination, but he got the job done. I thought $125 was a bit steep just to walk through the door, but I went with them due to the other reviews. No hassle, no fuss, he just did the job and left.

When we purchased our home six years ago we inherited a very old tank-less oil furnace original to the home (1971) - with a whopping 82% efficiency rating. We knew we had to replace it - and the 250 gallon giant metal oil tank in our garage - eventually..we said/////.nothing we were looking forward to doing. We had received estimates for getting a new oil system - which was roughly $12-15K...so we kept putting it off. One day we see bulldozers on our street and were told that we were getting gas in our town. Given the price of oil these days - we thought we'd look at what it would cost to convert - but figured it would be a fortune- so we weren't that optimistic. We also were willing to wait a bit longer....basically waiting for our original machine to break down. We started reading about oil to gas conversions. Even talked to a couple of other companies - but it seemed too big a job - and surely we thought - too expensive and time consuming. Then I was looking at the NJ energy savings website which mentioned Air Group and read some of the reviews on Angie's List and thought I would give them a call - just to educate myself if nothing else. Instant and courteous response - set up an appointment right away - and in walks Eric Vitale from AirGroup, LLC. Knowledgable, professional - and a nice personality to boot. Half an hour in to it - we were SOLD. He listened to what we wanted - we told him we couldn't break the bank doing it - and he told us about all the amazing incentives out there for oil to gas conversion. Plus, no 3rd party vendors (a sore point for me from having done other work at the house). All the people there where AirGroup employees. BIG PLUS when compared to the other companies I had talked to. We waited for the gas lines to be brought to our house and Air Group set up an appointment right away. I was a bit nervous because it was right before Christmas....and what if something went wrong or there was a delay? Many of our neighbors were converting as well and all were saying they were being delayed by at least a month. But we were with Air Group and never had a problem. The biggest part of the job - heat and hot water were done in 2 days. We made the appointment and the team showed up right on time. There were lots of people - whose names I can't all recall - but the main team was led by David Wilk - also terrific, professional and SO knowledgable. Everyone was polite and respectful and kept the house clean - how nice is that? We learned so much from David - especially - who told us what was being done. They sealed our attic (which was filled to the brim with insulation that needed to be removed because it was a fire hazard, who knew?) and did all the work to convert our system to gas. They made it all look easy - but it was a ton of work - those poor guys barely took a lunch break! I am pleased to say everything works great - our heat worked right after the second day and we have more hot water than ever. We can now take multiple showers and run multiple appliances without a problem. Setting up the town inspections (which we passed with flying colors) was more of a hassle than any of the work that Air Group did. Also, a commentary to their professionalism... Dave and his team, while insulating our attic came across an exhaust fan from our bathroom that was not venting properly - poor job done by another contractor we had hired to remodel our bathroom. They told me about it, fixed it and insulated it. How many companies now a days would fix something that they came across and found to be wrong? I've had all kinds of work up in the attic before and no one had told me that! I am grateful. I wish all companies were as professional as the team I encountered at AirGroup. I would recommend them without hesitation and when the time comes to replace our AC (another very old item in our home) - I know I will give AirGroup a call.
Description of Work: Oil to gas conversion. Included air test to evaluate which areas had a draft, 12" of cellulose insulation, new gas boiler (96% AFUE), new gas hot water 50 gallon tank. Filed all paper work with State/Feds to receive an improved efficiency audit refund and a no interest loan for work that was done. Out of pocket costs were only $5K for all of this work.

I have been using the Air Group for over 20 years for all my home?s HVAC needs and now a new whole house generator. They have always done a very good job during installation and maintenance visits. They have been very responsive to any questions or problems I may have had. Several years ago, they solved a CO2 problem my house was having that numerous other vendors and consultants had failed to do. They were able to install a whole house generator, shortly after Hurricane Sandy blew through, that I used for close to 10 days due to no power in my area. I highly recommend the company.

I was very happy with the service and quality of product used. Ron walked me through the entire process and provided suggestions to gain greater efficiency. The worker's were on time and were very efficient and completed the job in one day. Everything was cleaned at the end. The only downside was the price as it was a bit high, but I was advised at the beginning that they provide quality service and are not the cheapest in the market place. I believe it was worth the price.

AIR GROUP TO CUSTOMER: DROP DEAD!! After Hurricane Sandy left town our furnace would not work on generator power because Air Group had connected our heating thermostat to the central A/C system which they installed for us. That was fine with us at the time, but now we faced outdoor temperatures in the 30's and 40's and we were darn cold. We asked (begged) Air Group to remedy the thermostat problem, but they absolutely refused, saying "We don't service customers who are using portable generators." In desperation, we grabbed an electrician working next door. He needed some technical information, and Air Group threatened to void the warranty if another electrician touched the system. Due to Air Group's lack of cooperation we suffered needlessly in the cold for days, until electric power was restored.

We are so sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience. We did our absolute best during the storm to help as many people as possible without endangering our employees. We also walked many customer though trying things to get there heat running with portable generators. Such as; Grounding the generator to the home’s electrical ground and adding a load to the generator to reduce possible over voltage conditions that could affect the heating system. Our problem with this was many of these hook-ups were not done per code and could be potentially dangerous to the customers and to our employees. We have reviewed your account, and there is a note that the customer had called back to cancel the call. There is a note in the file that you had a portable generator hooked up to your heating system. Per phone conversation, proper voltage at boiler 40 volts from transformer and we advised to add load to generator, 1000 watt heater to possibly help the situation.

I discovered sewage backing up in my basement sinks. Since Air Group had recently done an excellent job installing a new boiler and hot water heater for me, I called them immediately. They sent a plumber right out, who said he could do the work but would first have to drive to Whippany (about 45 minutes away), on the clock, to fetch a snake. Since I had specifically stated on the phone that I thought the problem was a sewer clog, Air Group should not have sent a plumber with no snake. The plumber recommended I call Roto Rooter because they have longer snakes, could come right out with the equipment, and could camera the line. I paid him $116 for the visit and he left. I could not get Roto Rooter to come that day because we are in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and they were extremely busy. Therefore I called Air Group again to have the plumber return with the snake. Because it was late in the day, this now meant spending overtime rates of over $200/hour. I tried to get them to lower the hourly rate because the plumber should have come with the snake in the first place, but they wouldn't budge and I was desperate because I could not use my toilet. The plumber returned, pulled the toilet out of the basement, and snaked from there. Afterward he recommended I still have Roto Rooter come out to make sure the line was okay. He left the basement toilet off because. he said, Roto Rooter would need to look at the line from it the next day anyway. Now I had working plumbing but the plumber advised me to use it as little as possible until Roto Rooter had camaraed the line. The Roto Rooter man came the next morning. He was puzzled as to why the plumber had pulled the toilet, since I have a plug hole in the corner of the basement that served as a fine place to snake from. When he opened the plug hole there was lots of debris there, almost certainly stirred up by the snaking from the night before. The Roto Rooter man snaked the line thoroughly and assured me everything now looked fine; no need to camera the line. He could not reset the toilet, however, because he didn?t have the necessary parts and because he hadn?t pulled it in the first place (quite reasonable). I called Air Group again, demanding that they send the plumber back a third time to reset my toilet and make me whole at no further charge. This, after consultation with supervisors, they did. Based on this experience, I would not recommend using Air Group for a plumbing job. I spent nearly $500 to get the use of my toilet for one night. I paid Roto Rooter $365 for a thorough job from a professional I trusted, who spent time afterward cleaning up even though it?s not his job. If Roto Rooter had not been able to break the clog, they would not have charged me at all. That is service.

Hurricane sandy left me without power or heat for over a week. I finally got a generator connected to the transformer of my furnace today. Unfortunately the valve on top of my low water cutoff assembly burst and started spraying me with steam. It appears that it failed before the burst because it fed too much water to the system. I got a quote to repair this for $815.35. The low water cutoff costs 184.29 so i'm wondering what the h*** i need to pay $600.00 for installation? This is the third time i need to have this replaced, so i'm not a cranky home owner. For anyone else that needs this , expect to pay $100.0 just for a plumber to come to your house. $200.0 for the part, and roughly $75 to $80 dollars an hour for service. Probably two hours for a experienced plumber with right tools. That would be $460.00. Lets assume an issue occurs, one more hour, $540.00
Description of Work: Estimate for replacement of low water cutoff valve.

They came out very promptly in response to my request for an estimate and spent a much shorter time at the house than my other two estimates, but still gave me the feeling they were being completely thorough. Their total price for boiler and hot water heater was $3000 below the other two estimates, using top-of-the-line appliances (Carrier and Bradford-White). The installers arrived on time and were courteous and cleaned up after themselves well. My two greatest concerns were quality of the system and price, and Air Group aced both of those. I am very pleased and recommend them highly.

Work couldn't have gone better. The team showed up at the time stated and as promised finished the job in one day. They were careful both bringing the new equipment in and removing the old parts, and when they finished they carefully cleaned up all construction debris both inside and outside the house. The installers explained the new installation--which had more cutoff valves and safety equipment than the older boiler--and answered the questions I had. The salesman followed up the next day to see if there were any problems. There were none, as I was happy to tell him.
Description of Work: The contract involved removing a 25-year-old boiler for a baseboard heating system, removing the old boiler and unused parts, and installing a new boiler with new parts. plumbing, and wiring as required. The price was the lowest among several other bids, and the warranty was longer than any of the others. I had worked with Air Group in the past and found them very knowledgeable and professional, so i had no second thoughts about going with them. I was both surprised and delighted that they were also the low bid.

Jamie came out, on time but really found it impossible to install a central air conditioning system in my 1880 Victorian. He had a lot of good ideas, but he never really followed up. I called them because I understood they work in homes like mind that are difficult to cool. He sent me one email and I responded to him, but he never follow up. I hired someone else who has done a remarkable job.

The sales rep was very professional, pleasant, showed up on time and was responsive. We had multiple communications before the job was performed. The model numbers of the systems changed during our communications to ensure that we'd be eligible to receive the state energy rebate. Air Group came as scheduled to install the systems. They were professional and cleaned up well afterwards. However, when they presented the invoice to me I noticed that the furnace model number was the original model number that we had discussed, rather than the one we finally agreed upon. I brought this to the attention of Air Group. They owned up to their mistake, were very apologetic, and agreed to replace the furnace with the correct one the following week. Although it was a major inconvenience that I had to take another day off of work, they did return as promised to replace the furnace. This time, the sales rep showed up at the beginning of the installation to ensure the correct system was being installed (he hadn't come the first time). Subsequent to the installation, we noticed our lights momentarily dimmed when the A/C turned on. Air Group returned and installed a small unit to address this problem (at no charge). Although we had some bumps along the way, overall, Air Group handled everything professionally and promptly, doing what needed to be done to remedy the issues and ensure customer satisfaction. Aside from the unfortunate mistake that occurred with the system model number, I would use Air Group again. They were reliable and accepted full responsibility for all issues that arose. In addition, they promptly sent my friend the $50 referral fee they promised.

We did not do competitive bidding, as Air Group came highly recommended by someone whom I trust. Our furnace and A/C were old, and we wanted to replace before they broke! We were concerned with uneven heating and cooling in several parts of the house. The sales engineer recommended a few solutions and we took them.We were told that the crew would show up on Monday at 8 AM. They were early. Several trucks and a large crew decended on the house, removed the old units, installed the new ductwork and furnace outlet, installed the new A/C and furnace and were gone by about 3:30 PM. They took great care of my house. The home inspection revealed a defective GFCI socket. They responded to and replaced within an hour of my call. I was able to have the reinspection done and passed. My unit is eligible for rebates. They were very clear and helpful in providing the rebate application and associated information. I have received information from PSEG that my rebate has been approved.
Description of Work: Air Group replaced my furnace a new high-efficiency unit, replaced air conditioner, and installed three ducts/registers.
