Description of Work: This vendor turned out to be an anti-consultant . . . not attending to a thing we said and just applying a formulaic hotel exterior look when we asked to make the property a sustainable food-source garden. Upon reviewing our two very specific emails, an honorable proprietor would have apologized for lacking the expertise we requested and refunded our consulting fee See Letter: | |"It may be that I incorrectly understood the Angie's offer to include more than simply landscaping 1/2 of the back side of our house. I will have to check the language on this. | |The broader point is that you didn't attend to what we requested in any way: | |Your report included obvious finds that we didn't need to pay you tell us: |a) hurricane sandy downed all major trees (4) in the yard and flipped the back porch off it's foundation -- we wanted to consider different porch designs integrated into a new, no pesticide, sustainable landscaping. You offered no landscaping expertise in simply reiterating what we told you at the interview, "Deck is unstable and should be rectified". | |You redrafted the back porch with no new design (i.e. exactly as it is -sans hedge) and added a weird box steps when we asked for a widened double railing to the current steps and add a wheelchair ramp off the side for my mother (left out). | |You removed the air conditioning unit and planted on top of it which is clearly not even possible. | |b) we indicated that the privacy screen provided by the current back porch hedge was very important to us and we discussed moving the tall lilac's that shield the current vegetable garden from the house's reflected sun. Your plan has no privacy whatsoever and does not seem to retain the hairloom lilacs or dogwood from the defunct family farm that I mentioned were important to me. | |c) We plan to extend front porch patio from the driveway to the (R) edge of the house (ripping out the hedges) and wanted advice on landscaping the new periphery -- your advice "house bed plant material more suitable for hedging" . . . not useful as they were being ripped out anyway and you provided no advice on substitution. | |d) key to our requesting your expertise was if/where/how to relocate the garden at the back of the house to elsewhere on the property and also to install fruit trees for maximum organic produce yield. Other than covering the garden area with a cookie cutter commercial landscaping you missed the whole point of our inquiry -- which was to make the property a sustainable food source. "Vegetable garden should be moved away from the foundation" simply restates what we asked YOU to do . . . it provides no expertise or advice. | |e) I specifically mentioned that my family is allergic to certain tree pollen, grass and my Mother is allergic to roses -- all included in your plan. | |f) what does "lawn needs renovation" even mean -- the obvious of re-grading given we have giant holes where trees were uprooted or stump mounds exist? If you are talking about removing crab grass, clover, etc., we explained at the interview that we are ecologists and interested in maintaining living soil with a diversity of plants/animals and not pouring pesticides or petro-fertilizers into the ground water. I am mystified as to why you included replacing the lawn with a monoculture of highly dense (water/fertilizer intense) non-native grass. We specifically asked you not to. | |g) Again "rear drainage issues" just restates the obvious -- how is this useful expertise. We explained that there is maybe 5-6 inches of top soil and then a huge band of clay. The point was how to reposition the garden and fruit trees to take advantage of the soggy areas that are only thus in the spring and otherwise quite dry. | |h) "Curb appeal needed" is completely undefined so I have no idea what this means and so it is not a useful finding. | |I) Other than the blue spruce which is pretty hardy (and will grow too big for that space in no time), the rest of those plants don't look at all like they can take the sun and heat reflected off the back of our white house from roughly 10:30 AM until sunset. We had to put a screen of lilacs to get anything to grow in that space because it just gets fried off in June/July/August no matter how much you water. | |j) the yellow lettering against the photograph makes whatever you have written there pretty difficult to read in any case. | |I want you to know that I almost never write notes of complaint. I just don't have the time especially with estate issues and the like nagging at me. But really! You couldn't have disregarded what we said to you in any larger degree. I can only presume that you lost or couldn't read your notes. | |My husband and I are farm raised, academic people (biology/ecology professor & dean) who were very specific about the advice we needed and about not wanting to make our yard look like an extension of our living room (complete with mono-cultured lawn carpet). I estimated the plot re-landscaping and deck as a $25K-$35K project over 2 years. If you didn't have the planning/building/landscaping expertise we needed, you simply should have said so and just refunded the planning fee.
