Excellent work was done and we are excited how wonderful our floors look. Brian and his crews were fantastic. We had to move in as soon as the third coating was done due to other house closing. Brian gave us all the detailed information how we can protect the new floor including during and after the move. I definitely recommend to anyone.

From start to finish I was very impressed with the way our job went. I left a message on Brian's voicemail and got a call back from him the next morning. We made an appointment for him to come to see the job that evening at 5:00 ...and he was early!!! He went over everything, answered our questions and addressed our concerns, paiently explaining everything to my husband and I. Brian is very knowledgeable and has great deal of experience. We scheduled the job that evening. He came when he said he would the following week. Every time they came he gave me a 15 minute window and stuck to it. They worked quickly and efficiently. They kept to our schedule. They were clean and respectful of our home. He gave us a very good competitive price and has an exceptional work ethic that shows in our completed project.
Description of Work: I had two adjoining 10 x 15' bedrooms that I had purchased an engineered wood for. Brian and his team from Grain Flooring installed the product and did a fantastic job.

We recently had Brian do our second project, which says a lot right there. Our bedroom floor was a little slanted on one side and he did a magnificent job leveling and preparing the floor so he could install the floor in the direction we wanted. He was extremely responsive. He came on a Friday to give us an estimate, started the work on Saturday, the following day and finished the following Monday. He also came right on time. Before he leaves, he cleans up completely, even vacuuming our carpeted stairs. He leaves the job site immaculate.

I met with 5 different flooring companies I found on Angie's list. Pricing was about the same from each company for site finished and pre-finished options. My home is 117 years old. I have maintained and repaired this home for the past 50 years, I am knowledgeable and skilled in construction trades. I want things done correctly. I do almost everything my self, but this was a situation where I felt the money would be better spent on a professional. I had removed all of the old flooring and replaced with new tongue and groove 3/4 plywood. I shimmed, shaved and leveled as much as I could. There were still some areas that had slight low and high spots. This was a big concern for me. My expectations are realistic, I was not looking for a perfectly level floor, I just wanted it to be a flat as possible. I had asked the first 4 contractors how they would address these areas, they all said "yeah, we'll take care of it". When I pressed them for details of how it would be addressed they either did not have answers or provided ones that I did not like. I had called Brian "The Floor Doctor" at Grain Flooring, the first thing that I liked was that Brain asked me a lot of questions about my home, the existing floor, what I was interested in doing, etc. We spoke for at least 15 minutes. When he arrived to inspect my home, we walked though the rooms and he immediately pointed out the areas that needed to be addresses and provided detailed answers as to how how would correct those areas. He spent approximately 40 minutes discussing the project with me. I spent that evening reading the reviews for Grain Flooring and one other company that i was considering. I read each and every review, 100+ for each company. After reading all of Grain's reviews, I knew I found my guy. I received an estimate the next day and spoke with Brian the day after. I decided to go with a pre-finished red oak. Brian said he would stop by the next day with box of the material and lay it out so my wife and I could the color and pattern to be sure we liked it. Once we agreed, Brian showed up the next day with the remainder of the material. Brian began addressing the low and high area issues in the rooms by shimming and blending the areas with combinations of thin plywood, roofing shingles and roofing felt. Once the flooring material was acclimated to the home, Brian began laying it out. He started at the entrance way of the home making sure that the new floor ran straight and true through the longest hallway, as he said, "this section is most important because it is what you see first" All of the remaining flooring is straight with even lines running through each room. I was amazed and how smooth Brian got the floors for us. He minimized the slope of two problem areas to where they are almost unnoticeable. My home has all the original woodwork and moldings. The colors differ slightly from room to room. When it cam time to stain the quarter round moldings, Brian made 4 piles. Brain has a great eye for color and stained the pieces to match each room. While the floor is obviously new, the quarter round moldings look like they were always there, they matched the baseboards perfectly. Brian and his worker were punctual and showed up every day. They work neatly and cleanly and cleaned up after themselves every day. Brian was accommodating and would listen to my concerns and either offer advice or make a change that I requested without issue. When the job was completed, Brain made sure that we were completely satisfied with the work before asking me for payment. By the way, Brain did not ask me for any money up front, he simply said pay me in full when the job is completed and you are satisfied. I am extremely satisfied with the work that Brian did. I do not think the floor could have come out any better, Brain has exceeded (not easy to do) my expectations. If you are looking for a true flooring craftsman that is a pleasure to work with, look no further than Brain at Grain Flooring.

Brian did a complete refinishing of our exterior porch floor two years ago. We're very happy with how it turned out. This year we asked Brian to do a light sanding/ re-varnishing, particularly on the areas that are exposed to snow and rain. Again, we're very happy with the result and plan to see Brian again in two years.

After leaving a message, Brian returned my call the same day and came over the next day to look at the decks and to give me a price quote. He explained in detail what his recommendations were and what the time frame would be. Brian's professionalism and simple way of communicating "sold me" and I awarded him with the job. He told me the time frame the work would be done and called me the evening before the first day to confirm. He showed me the progress they made at the end of each day, also explaining what they did and what the next step would be. Each day when they left, they cleaned up and made sure the doors was locked. They finished in time and did great work.

Brian is nothing short of a master of his craft, he is extremely knowledgeable and will spend all the time necessary to answer questions and make sure the client is getting what they need. We felt extremely comfortable with Brian due to this fact. For example one of the biggest ongoing debates is whether to use an oil based stain or water based stain, the answer was simple if you can lay six coats of water based stain so as to equal the same thickness of oil base which requires only three coats and you will be able to find a service provider who will one tell you the truth and two actually lay 6 coats of water based stain at a reasonable cost as to ensure it matches the durability of oil. I tried everyone I spoke to said I only need two coats of water based stain and all the online research validated Brian. He as well is in the trenches working the sanders and ensuring the floors are perfect. Also don't mind the mess they do a great job cleaning up . We are very happy, the before and after is nothing short of amazing. The man knows his stuff and the price is worth the final product.

The job started promptly at 7:30am and proceeded smoothly until 1:00. At various times, Brian showed me what he was doing and why my deck (because it is only a foot off the ground) was susceptible to moisture. He treated some imperfections in the original deck structure without adding extra cost. Brian identified certain imperfections (mentioned above) and fixed them in order to make the deck better and safer. Instead of trying to find "issues" to increase the profit on the job, Brian did this to make the deck better for my family -- truly professional! I am very satisfied with his work and professionalism. He cared about doing right by the customer -- all future customers should consider this trait.
Description of Work: I needed the cedar deck to be restored to vitality -- and Brian's work got it done in one day. I had used the deck finishing material known as "Restore" (sold at Lowe's and HD). Over 3 years time, the material would not stay on the wood. Every rain storm, large chunks peeled off. The deck was basically a blotchy mix of Restore and bare untreated wood. I solicited several businesses and received estimates for the removal, but only Brian offered an understanding of how the Restore product failed. His solution was simple -- sand the deck to remove all the Restore and repair some bare areas which had rotted due to the long term exposure to the weather. Then, a suitable stain was laid down in 2 coats and the deck looks clean and attractive. He told me it would be done in one day and he was right.

Brian was amazing! He's so talented and professional. I just bought my first home and found Brian on Angie's List. He came over the day I closed, 12/30 (yes, this is a LONG OVERDUE and Warranted Review!!) and began work the next day (New Years Eve) and worked through (including New Years Day) in order for us to begin moving items in as quickly as possible. The floors look gorgeous. Brian was there every day - positive attitude and openness to share in the process as well as offer insight. Brian was my first Contractor Hire and He presented himself so well that I had confidence and trust in him. I'd hire him again in an instant. Thank you Brian!!!!

This is a long overdue and ABSOLUTELY WORTHY review. I closed on my first home 12/30. Brian came that day to the home, provided an estimate and began work the next day (New Years Eve) Brian and his team worked New Years Day as well to meet the goal of completion by the following Sat. My goal was to move in as soon as possible and Brian made that happen. This was my first experience contracting anyone and he created an honest and safe space for me to feel confident and comfortable. Brian was there every day and had direct oversight if his team as well. I would hire Brian again in a heart beat. He's a talent and skilled professional and straight forward. I appreciated his notations and guidance through the process. The floors are gorgeous. I am wearing slippers and asking everyone to take their shoes off as I want these floors to shine and last forever! :) Thank you for everything! Look forward to future work! Cheers, Paula

Description of Work: 2nd floor and stair case refinished hardwood floors
After seeing the work Brian had done on my condo floors I decided to contact him again to refinish the floors in our house. Just like with my condo, I was very happy with the outcome of our floors when he was finished working. Brian set up an appointment with me when I called him and came by the house to assess the state of our floors. They were in very rough shape but Brian was confident he could make them look great again. His estimate was lower than I was expecting so we didn’t even bother consulting anyone else. Brian came to our house a few times before he was even supposed to start working in order to show us different color options and do repairs to some floor boards. He sanded a spot on the floor and put down four different finishing options. He also replaced some floorboards along with piecing in a spot where a floor vent used to be. Brian did a great job with the pieces replacing the vent; you can’t even tell a vent used to be there. As with my condo, Brian was very helpful throughout the process and made suggestions he felt would be the best option. We were away on vacation while Brian was working on the floor. He called a few times just to keep us updated and let us know the timeline for him finishing the work. He sanded and stained every room in our house, except for the bathroom, putting down four coats of stain for the best finish. When we returned from vacation, he came back one day to do some paint touch ups around the house. My wife and I were blown away when seeing our floors upon our return. They were better than we could have imagined. As with my condo, Brian asks for no money until the job is completed and you are happy with the results. I will be consulting Brian with any future flooring needs we have.

Brian Ledger from Grain Flooring calls himself the "Dr. of Wood Floors", and after seeing him work, it's easy to see why it’s the perfect name for him. If you need your floors done, I would strongly encourage you to have Brian do the work, your floors will look amazing, and you will enjoy having him in your home. Reasons to hire him: Excellent Craftsmanship Reliable On-Time Fair Priced Really Good Guy We bought a new home, and I wanted to get the floors done before we moved in. I called Brian a week before the close, and he met me at our house 1 hour after we had closed on our new house. He was prompt and ready to get to work. Since I needed to pull up the carpets, I had no idea what the floors were going to look like. Brian helped me pull up the carpet and he immediately began to inspect the floors. When I saw what was under the carpet, I was discouraged, but Brian assured me that when he was done, the floors would look great. (Our house was built in 1919, and the floors are original.) Brain spotted other things that needed repair or tending to, and he also took care of them at no additional cost. For example, some molding was missing on the banister, Brian saw it, which I had not, and said he could fix it, no problem. He also spotted and removed a tripping hazard due to the wrong type of threshold being used. I also appreciated that he did not try to up sell me on other work that "needed" to be done as other companies had done when they came in for a quote. Brian told me how many days the job would take, and he stuck to his schedule. He arrived early every day, and worked until the job was done. I also appreciated all the care Brian took to make sure my floors looked great, he is a perfectionist, and he stays on something until he is satisfied with the outcome. (and many times he saw things that I did not.) I also found Brian to be a really good guy, and that says a lot about him and why his work is so good, because if it’s the “right” thing to do, he does it. For example, since we just bought the house, there was a lot of work that I needed to do. In front of my house the trees were really overgrown, and I had to cut them away from the house and electrical wires. Brian saw that I didn’t have the right tools, and the next day be brought over a pole saw for me to use, just because he wanted to help me out. The end result was that our floors and stairway look amazing! In addition to the floors, Brian also refinished the banister which went from dull muddy brown to bright and shiny where you can now see the grain in the wood. We are all moved into our house, and everyone who has visited our new home has commented on how amazing the floors and stairway look. I’m so happy that we went with Grain Floors, and the fantastic work that Brian did.

I'm very pleased with Brian's work. It's now been almost a year, and I still love the floors! I had him refinish the floors in two bedrooms, one of which was in horrible shape. The bedroom that was in horrible shape now looks great (you have to know what to look for to see the issues). The other room looks amazing. He sanded the floors down, then applied three layers of oil-based polyurethane. The bad room needed an extra sanding after the first coat, but did not need more than an hour extra work. Brian was professional, a man of his word, and had a lot of bits of wisdom to share. I am going to be reaching back out to him in a few months to get the rest of the floors refinished.

Great experience. Brian was very prompt in delivering an estimate and patient with us as we asked lots of questions and changed our mind on flooring type. He also would not accept any payment until the job was done and we were satisfied.

From the quote to the finish, Brian was on point. Brian showed up everyday until the job was finished, and every day there was clear progress, even over a holiday weekend. As always some additional work was required and a hand rail was added post quote, (this was his idea and it is one of the house's best features now), he never mentioned or swayed from the initial quote. Lastly, the custom color that he formulated looks great, completely changed the house for the better. If you need work done on your floor I would try him first, hope he is available, and take his suggestions. Nice guy and top quality work.

Simply put: Brian did a fantastic job. He showed up early to the first appointment and gave us a quote, starting work the next day. There were several details that he brought to our attention and he simply "took care of." There was no dollaring to death, he gave his price and stuck to it. He also went all around central NJ to ensure we got the newell post we wanted. It's nice to hire people who do what they say they will do - and do it well. His level of service is worth a premium.

I have an older deck that is pretty much in the twilight of its life. I really only thought my two options were to get the deck powerwashed and stained or just to demo it and build a new one. Then i stumbled on to Brian's page on AL. I contacted brian to schedule an estimate and he responded immediately. Then he told me about his process of refinishing/repairing the deck and i was sold. After hiring him for the job, he kept in contact with me to talk me through what stain to get. After i got the stain, he scheduled me almost immediately. Brian repaired the deck yesterday and it looks brand new! He also quoted me for doing 1 coat of stain, but put on 2 extra coats for me. He really went the extra mile and it showed me that he really cared about the work he does. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him, and I expect to see him back at my house the next time i need my deck refinished. Thanks Brian!

After finding I had parquet flooring under the carpet in my condo I contacted Brian to see if he would be able to repair and finish the floors throughout my condo along with replacing the flooring in my kitchen. Brian met with me the next day and gave me an estimate based on what he could see since the rug hadn?t been completely pulled up yet. Brian was very knowledgeable with all aspects of the job and went through all of the options I had. After going through the different options with me, he told me what he thought would look best when it came to color and style. For the kitchen, he showed me different types of laminate flooring and suggested a brand that comes from Europe. He told me it has outstanding reviews in Europe and even though it?s a little more expensive that it?s extremely durable and would be worth it. Once Brian pulled up the carpet he was able to see the parquet was in horrible shape and he did great job repairing it. I stopped by while he was working the first day and was able to see how bad the floors really were. Several rows of the parquet around the border of each room needed to be repaired or replaced. Brian explained to me that he was going to go through all the loose pieces and reuse anything that was in good shape. The flooring I have is no longer made in that size so any pieces that needed to be replaced Brian had to hand cut to the proper size. While I was there, he sanded a little part of the floor for me and rubbed a bit of the stain he was going to use on it so I could get an idea of what color the floors would be. After seeing the color of the floors, we picked a color for the laminate that would match the cabinets and parquet flooring. Brian finished all of the work in a week. Not sure how many hours of work he put in each day since I am not living there and only stopped by on the first day of work. Met Brian on Sunday 1/17/16, he finished working on Saturday the 16th, to see his finished work and couldn?t be happier with the outcome. All of his hard work shows in my new floors, which look outstanding. Brian was very easy to work with and thorough during every part of the job. Before he did any of the work he explained, in detail, what he would be doing, how he would be doing it, and why he would be doing it that way. As I was discussing different parts of the job with him, he would tell me what would be the most cost effective along with the best options for either renting or selling my condo. In the future, I will not hesitate to use Brian?s services again for any flooring jobs I need done.
