Description of Work: Brian of Grain Flooring is a miracle man and I don't say this lightly! He can do anything you need done and does it with a smile. He is a professional and takes each task, big or small very seriously. Having him is an added bonus because he gives ideas for improvement. He and his team are trustworthy. They worked in my house while I was away. At the end of a work day they left the place clean and the task at hand accomplished. His charges are fair. What he quoted I accepted outright without negotiating. I would recommend him to anyone looking for help in the areas I've listed.

Overall it went very well.
Description of Work: Brian removed carpeting from several rooms and refinished hardwood floors, both floors that had been exposed and those under the old carpeting. In a relatively short amount of time, he sanded down the floors and made the wood look brand new. The floors turned out beautifully, including one that was extensively marred over the course of almost 45 years. It was well worth the $4,000 I paid. In fact, my husband still thinks that of all the work I did in my parents' home to get it in shape to sell, it was the best thing I did.

Brian responded to our emergency call when my mother's apartment was flooded. He pulled up the flooring(arranged by our decorator), and installed it. He also put protectors on the bottoms (the feet) of all table & chairs so they wouldn't scratch the floors.

I called Grain Flooring after reading the reviews on Angies list. Brian returned my call the same day and was very responsive. He came out and surveyed the job shortly after I called him. After calling a couple of other flooring companies I decided to let Grain flooring do the work. For the foyer where the tile was Brian suggested using strips of walnut mixed with the oak flooring to create a border separation between the foyer and the adjacent rooms. I loved the idea. He started the job within a week. He installed the wood flooring in the foyer and it looked spectacular. After trying the stain once I asked him to make it darker and he matched what I wanted exactly. Then he completed the staining and polyurethane on consecutive days. He always arrived on time, worked diligently on the job wasting no time. After the last coat of poly I noticed some odd dull spots in a couple of rooms. I called Brian and he came over to take a look. He agreed to fix it without me asking and he did not add it to the bill. He came back within a day to apply another coat of latex poly over the oil based polyurethane in the whole house, even where it was not needed. When he finished I was blown away by the result. The floors are a perfect color and a perfect finish. I cannot believe how smooth the finish is on the floors. The best part is the foyer. The walnut contrast with the oak boards is incredibly rich looking. The separation between the rooms is a real highlight of the house now. Brian nailed it with the design of this area. Brian took no money before the job was done and he told me he would not take any money until I was totally satisfied. He lived up to his word completely. I would use Grain Flooring again but I love my floors so much now I have no intention of doing them over again!
Description of Work: I had the original oak hardwood flooring in the entire house sanded, stained and refinished. This included the stair treads and railings. I also had the stained risers on the stairs sanded because I intend to paint those white. Additionally, I had ceramic tile in the foyer replaced with the same oak flooring to match the rest of the flooring in the house. The house was built in 1987 and is about 2700 sq. ft. overall. Like I said, I had all of the floors refinished including the closets. Only the kitchen and bathrooms were not redone because they are not hardwood floors. To prepare for the refinishing, I removed all furniture, carpeting and the base molding in all rooms as well as the tile in the foyer.

The quotes we received ranged from Grain Flooring's price of $3925 to around $5500. Not only was Grain Flooring the cheapest but Brian's quote also included more work that the other companies would charge extra for. Grain Flooring's quote included the replacement of portions of floor where discoloration and rotting was too much to repair. Thee coats of polyurethane where others only included two. Even the removal and replacement of all our stair spindles, shoe moldings and radiators to ensure all the little nooks and corners were properly prepped and finished to match the quality of the rest of the floor. After first speaking with Brian on the phone we were skeptical on whether or not we wanted to use their services. Grain Flooring's price was low, much lower than his competitors and he was promising more work than the others. We couldn't help but have that 'too good to be true' feeling. Then Brian came in, walked through our house with us and explained in full detail, each step of the process he planned to take in order to get our floors in the best shape possible. He answered all our questions, addressed our concerns and was very straightforward with us on what can be fixed and what will likely remain afterwards due to the extent of the damage. He helped us decide what we should choose to repair and what can be left as is in order to save on costs. After Brian's visit we decided to go ahead and choose Grain Flooring to work on our floors. Brian started on our floors the day after we gave him the go ahead. He asked for no money up front and told us he would take payment when we are fully satisfied with the job. He and his crew always came on time, were as neat as can be reasonably expected and they cleaned up after each day's work. Brain was there each day to do work and supervise his crew. Snow and some unexpected issues added 2 days worth of work to our original schedule but not a single dime was added to the original price. We could not be happier with the overall experience we've had with Brian and Grain Flooring. From pricing to completion, it's hard to ask for better service and results. Our 90 something year old floors look almost brand new. All the surface imperfections have been sanded out, the stain perfectly even across all the wood and three coats of polyurethane to preserve and protect our finish for what we hope will be a very long time. Thank you again Brian for a job well done. Please feel free to use us as references for future work.
Description of Work: We had recently closed on a 1920's house with original wood floors that were in very, very bad shape. We reached out to a number of flooring specialists from Angie's List and requested for four different companies to come out and provide us with quotes to refinishing all our floors with the exception of the attic. Total floor square footage came to approx 1600 sq ft. plus two flights of stairs and all our closets. Our floors were in bad shape and definitely showed their age. Work done by the previous owner left deep scratches, heavy gouging from previous sanding attempts and water damage from the steam radiator heating.

Brian and his crew did an excellent job. I couldn't have asked for anything more. I have been taking care of my parents' house for the last 3 years in order to get it on the market. My last project was doing the floors. I think the floors had a lot to do with the fact that we got 3 offers immediately on the house after it was put on the market! They just came out beautifully. There are gorgeous. The repair work they did in the den was excellent. You can't tell the difference between the old wood and the replacement. The match was perfect. Brian knows his stuff--he is very professional, prompt, and went above and beyond the call of duty to help box up some stuff in the house to help his wife (a real estate agent) get the house ready to be shown. I also asked him to paint the trim and add quarter round where needed. The result was gorgeous. All in all, a terrific job and I'd recommend him highly!
Description of Work: The oak floors on the first floor were covered by carpeting all the time since my parents bought their house (back in 1949) so they needed to be treated. There was water damage to the floor in the den and so a portion of the wood needed to be matched and replaced. The pine floors upstairs also need treating. It had been years since any upkeep on the floors.

The floors look beautiful. We had no problems at all, and they did it in less time than they said it would take. He was there everyday and right along side his guys. He also did not ask for any money until the job was done. They were just very polite, hardworking, and clean.
Description of Work: They had just redone the floors in my new house. They moved all of my furniture, and sanded all of the floors in the house. They also put in a very dark finish. It was hardwood flooring, and they did a deck.

The day we bought our first home, we realized that we could not could not handle the task of sanding and refinishing our hardwood floors ourselves. We would need to find a skilled and reliable flooring contractor to restore our hardwood floors. The problem was that we had no idea to whom we could turn. As luck would have it, we were introduced to Brian of Grain Flooring and quickly realized that we had found our man. Not only is Brian a true flooring craftsman with years of experience (and great stories to go with them), he is both a genuine and friendly guy. It was reassuring for us to know that Brian, owner of Grain Flooring, is always on every job so we felt confident that the work would be of the highest quality. Our walk-through with Brian to discuss the job revealed the level of skill and attention to detail that he brings to the job. He listened to what we were looking to achieve with the project and made some very helpful suggestions, such as stain colors and polyurethane finishes, that furthered our goal. His assessment of the job and estimate were clear, fairly priced and easily understood, and we had a strong grasp of the project timeline and how our lives would be impacted during the project. Brian was able to commence the project without delay so that we could get on with settling in to our new home. Once the project had begun, we were pleased with his work habits as he was both punctual and a perfectionist. He treated our home as he would his own ? the work spaces were left clean and ready for the next day. Throughout the job, Brian kept us updated on his progress and what we could expect over the next day or two. When he was finished, the floors looked like new. The color and finish were precisely as discussed and we just kept saying to ourselves, ?I can't believe that these beautiful floors were covered under wall-to-wall carpet for so long?. Our neighbor, whose grandfather built our house, was amazed by the final result and remarked that he hadn't seen the floors look that good since he was a child. In sum, we thoroughly recommend Brian and Grain Flooring. Should you have any questions regarding Brian's services, I would be more than happy to chat with you further. I guarantee that you too will be pleased with your ?new? floors courtesy of Grain Flooring.
Description of Work: Sand and refinish hardwood floors in a 1926 colonial. The wood floors consisted of oak and pine. Flooring to be refinished encompassed a living room, dining room, and three bedrooms. The result was wood floors that looked as if they were new.

As first time home buyers, we were very cautious and concerned with finding the right people to bring new life to our hardwood floors. We were looking for someone reliable, professional, friendly, and above all, able to deliver extremely well crafted, quality results. We had found all the above with Brian and Grain Flooring services. From the start, Brian was able to relay his extensive and careful expertise, all the while being friendly and very informative. His attention to detail was continually reassuring. After his assessment and estimate, we were well informed of what needed to be done and at what price. He was able to start work within our requested schedule, had arrived to perform the work daily, and had arrived on time. The conditions were left clean and well maintained. He had removed all radiators, doors, etc., and offered to reattach as part of the service. He had basically taken care of every possible detail. Also note that Brian is the owner of GL and was always on site working/overseeing. Again, reassuring. He had kept us in the loop during the whole process, step by step. He had made knowledgeable suggestions about the stain colors (considering the remainder of the home, trim, decor) and kept the vision in tact as discussed. He had done the replacements/repairs to parts of the flooring with no signs of any repairs at the end of the whole project. Seamless. Everything down to the discussed gloss touches on the last coat of poly were done to specs and description. One more thing to note was that Brian had continually advised us on other possible quick tricks and fixes to other details of the home, to preserve its current conditions. A majority of these had nothing to do with the flooring. That showed additional care for his work, craft, and for our home. It had meant a lot to work with someone who was obviously passionate about their craft but also showed a genuine appreciation for our home. What more can you ask for? Thoroughly recommended. If you have any doubts even after reading this review, feel free to call/contact his references (including us). I guarantee you'll be pleased with all you hear, as we were from the start.
Description of Work: Refinish & repair of hardwood floors in a 1920's colonial. Woods worked on were oak and pine. There were several spots within the ground floor that required repair (former wet spots, mismatched past replacement wood/work). One portion had white oak and red oak mismatch. This was replaced and repaired. Also wet/damaged spots were repaired or sanded out to flawless results. Total span of flooring covered three bedrooms, lr, dr, and staircase. End result like new.
