Ace Masonry was very professional from the beginning estimate until the end of the job. The estimate was very detailed and pictures were taken of the existing steps. The workers came on time every day and worked great as a team. They all knew their job and no time was wasted. At the end of each of the three days, they cleaned everything up and secured the area. They were all very skilled and paid attention to all details. at the end of the job they hosed down the driveway and even planted grass seed in the area along the walkway. The job came out great. They suggested some other jobs around the house which I will have done later in the year. Patrick was always available and answered any questions that we had.

I called Ace masonry on Saturday May 18th for an estimate to replace my front steps and repair my chimney. The business owner Patrick Allen returned my call the same evening. We agreed on an estimate for the very next day, Sunday May 19th. Patrick arrived on time. He proceeded to do a thorough inspection of the work i needed done. Patrick was professional and courteous. He answered all of my questions and prepaired the written estimate at that time. I felt the estimate was fair and agreed to have the work done beginning the very next day,Monday May 20th. Patrick estimated 2 days to complete the job. The crew arrived on time and got right to work. They were professional, and courteous to my family. A great group of guys. They treated my property as if it was their own. At the end of the day everything was cleaned up and my driveway hosed down. The work was completed as promised by the end of the second day. My wife and i are thrilled with the results !!!! I will not hesitate to call on Ace Masonry for any future work that i need done. Thank you Patrick Allen and the entire Ace Masonry crew !!!!!

I had hoped my first experience would be much better. Im not sure if i could rely on Angies List
Description of Work: I first met Pat in the middle of June and he gave me two estimates. One to repoint and reset some brick steps. this went fine and he completed the work as promised. When he came for the payment heasked when i wanted to do the driveway work which was the second estimate. I told him i had a shed that i needed removed before the drivway work.He offered to give me an estimate and left to look at it.About 45 minutes later he told me he would start that weekend and that he would remove it off site, fill the area with topsoil and put grass seed on the top soil for 2000 dollarsItold him i wanted to remove some antique tools and other items first.Hesaid not to worry, that hr would place the items on the side and let me take what i wanted.Itold him that was fine and i guess he started on Sunday. On monday he called and complained that this job was a disater and that he was losing his shirt . He demanded an additional 500 dollars or he would leave a big hole in my back yard.I guess i had no other choice.I paid his forman Paolo the entire amount and asked Paolo where the tools were ? PAOlo said they were at the office.I asked him for one item, a 500 dollar well point.Needless to say that was never returned.Pat later told me he donated a antique wagon and some other items to the Union City MUseum.Pat claimed he didnt really do demo work evev though his ad claims he does.THen he said the driveway work would be an additional 1200 dollars. This whole experience has left a bad taste.Pat claims he is the highest rated mason contractor on the east coast. If this is true i would hate to deal with the worst!!!!

Response from Ace Masonry & Builders
Upon completion of the first job, the member asked for an estimate to restore/hot tack & seal a 2' x 20' section. He then asked for a quote to demolish the shed located in the yard. I did an intial inspection and gave a price of $2,000. After being contracted to start, we began removing the items inside the shed. I asked the member what he wanted us to do with the contents (we normally set them aside, cover to protect, and relocate the items under the homeowners direction). The member informed me that he didn't care for anything inside and to throw everything out. He did allow me to take a wheel barrow of which I did donate to a local museum. I was never asked for anything, as we would have left the member whatever they wanted. The more we threw out from the shed contents, the more it would cost me for disposal. The item the member is asking for was retrieved from the dump site and hand delivered to the homeowner. Further inspection of the emptied shed, exposed a 55 gallon drum of oil and grease -- this needed to be disposed of properly at a NJ state certified facility (an unforseen cost that I absorbed). We then found a giant void filled with garbage and a family of raccoons. The void was 8' x 10' x 16' deep. I never ever told the member that I would leave that giant hole in their ground, but I did inform them that I did not quote them for the extra fill and that this would be an additional cost of $500. My dumping fees were already at $1,700 and my labor cost $1,500. I was already losing $1,000 on this job and could not afford to cover the extra fill. When the shed was demolished and removed, the void filled, and the grass seeded, the job was complete. The member then asked about the driveway. He now wanted to do the whole left side of the driveway complete with asphalt caulking, hot tack, and an entire sealant job. I could NOT by any means, complete this large of a section for the same cost of a 2' x 20' section. I was also unaware that the customer was so unhappy with our work. Like, I always say, I do every job as it is my own. My men work hard and I give very fair prices. This member got the deal of the century. I lost money on the demolition of the shed and could not lose money on completing the driveway.

As a female first time homebuyer, I am very wary of any contractors trying to swindle me, but Ace Masonry was professional from start to finish. Pat Allen came to do the estimate exactly at the time we agreed on. He was patient and talked me through everything. I was a little shocked at the price, but it was a lot of work to be done, and quite urgently. This was a large job (well, to ME it seemed large!) with several components, and Pat bundled the prices together and explained where he could cut me a break. He did look around and notice other problems with my house, like the front concrete steps, which I hadn't noticed needed work, and he explained how he could correct those problems, too. He was not pushy, and was agreeable when I said that part would have to happen at a later date. He did offer me a bigger break if I'd sign on the spot, but I wasn't ready. The day after I signed his proposal, which was detailed and thorough, he had a team of guys on the job. The men who work for Pat were respectful and hard-working. When I looked at my new chimney flashing, I said Hmmmm, it looks ugly, and the men bounced right back up to the roof to fix it. I had to add-on the tree branch removal at a neighbor's request, and Pat gave me a nice price. Upon completion of the job, Pat came to review all of the work with me, and explained that a few "extras" had to be done to get the job completed, for which he didn't charge me extra (for example, some wood had to be replaced in the garage to get everything to come together). The team never bothered me with these questions or issues, they handled everything themselves. Clean-up was perfect, everything power-washed clean. All of the work is absolutely beautiful, and the price is completely justified. So good, in fact, that a neighbor hired them to do a job right after mine. Pat said I am an ideal customer (I basically stayed out of the way and offered coffee and soda to the workers, which they always thanked me for), but this was an ideal experience. As stress-free as it could have been. Upon completion, he smiled and wished me luck with my new house. Nice touch. I will be using Ace Masonry in the future to fix those steps and eventually extend my driveway.
Description of Work: Concrete wall in rear of garage completely removed and rebuilt. Dead tree branches chainsawed and removed. Chimney flashing and some bricks replaced, new chimney cap. Sidewalk slabs were lifted, dug out, and relaid flat.

I really felt that he was disrespectful. I feel that he would have done a good job and he gave me a reasonable price. But I just feel that it was very unprofessional.
Description of Work: I called him and he came out and gave me an estimate and told me what he was going to do. He was extremely fast in his explanation. I emailed him yesterday to see if he could come out and take another look at the job because I had questions. He called me back and said I can answer the questions over the phone. He would never let me finish. In the middle of my questions he told me I was giving him a headache and he didn't want to use the job.

I had spoken to this member several times and may have gotten frustrated repeating the process of how we planned to perform the job. I was at the initial estimate for over an hour explaining the many things they wanted prices on. I then emailed them a detailed proposal outlining the process of the project. We spoke on the phone going over the details of the proposal twice. I've been in the business for many years and do each job like it's my own. All of Ace Masonry's projects are completed professionally using the most cost efficient options, in a timely manner. This member was questioning my expertise and methods. I apologized, and apologize again for coming off as disrespectful.

Can't say enough about the professionalism of Pat and his crew. I think I called on a Friday afternoon to confirm that we wanted to hire him and it was less than a week later that work began. From start to finish, the project took just a week and it was a big job. He had up to eight workers on the project at the same time. Pat added a step on the bottom staircase at no charge to help eliminate a steep pitch along our front walk. He also painted the porch at no extra charge, a project I doubt we would have had the patience to do ourselves. The steps look great. It has really changed the look of the front of our house. I certainly would use ACE in the future for any further work I have done, and wish I knew about him when I had patio work done several years ago.

We were extremely satisfied with his work, constant communication, and his competitive prices. He even recommended cheaper solutions and his own opinion of what we were looking for which really turned our backyard beautiful. One of the walls was also facing our neighbor's house. They keep commenting on how beautiful the wall looks and how clean and professional the crew was while working. We will absolutely be using Ace Masonry for all of our future projects.

Patrick (owner) of Ace Masonry called me within one hour of my initial email. I explained that the project was for the steps to my mothers house. When he heard that she was 96 years old, and that the steps were in total dis-repair, he offered to replce them the next day (saturday) and complete the job over the weekend. He treated my elderly mother like she was his family. For this, I am in his debt. His work was beautifully done, and it has recieved compliments from the neighbors. I will have other projects for his company, as they really stepped up to the plate a delivered.
Description of Work: Brick steps at front door to my mothers Cape Cod home. There were five steps leading up to a 4ft X 4 ft platform at the door. The job was started on a Saturday, and completed on the next day, Sunday. The old steps were falling apart with many loose bricks and missing mortor. The old steps were dismantled and removed, with no damage to the plants and walkways. The railing were removed and set aside. A railing specialist, who works with Ace Masonry, was contacted by them to inspect, clean, and re-install the railing, once the cement has cured. Ace arranged and coordinated everything for me. The new steps were built and in place by Sunday afternoon. Ace masonry worked over the weekend to complete this project.

The estimate provided to the member was as follows: Restoration to the existing sunken damaged side patio. Remove all handrails and set aside. Remove the concrete raised patio, limestone edging, and 5 courses of brick below the patio. Remove all fill from the surface down 2’. Inspect remaining fill and test for compaction. Rebuild the brick walls using new brick to match the existing as close as possible (approx. 350+ brick). Waterproof the existing subgrade from the patio wall (approx. 3’ x 30’). Installation of ¾” stone and compact. Installation of 4” of 3500 PSI concrete in the patio, pitched away from the house. Installation of limestone coping (12” x 2.5” x 12” -- approx. 30’). Sand, prime, paint railings and reinstall. Power wash all remaining brick walls of the raised patio. Install all new corner joints and tuck point where needed. We also proposed to drylock a section in his garage at no charge. My fieldnotes were consistent with the proposal and we broke down the estimate as we normally do. If the member contacted us and asked for a more itemized/broken down proposal, we would have sent him a copy more suitable to his liking right away. We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction and quality work and would have done our best to make things clearer for the member if given the chance.

They did some touch up work as well. I believe that they were reasonable and that was the reason that I used them. I checked around on that as it was a wall business. Overall, it was very good. We have had some comments about how the wall looked. I was mainly concerned with the retaining wall that I wanted to put up. The workmen themselves kept me informed about what they were doing. Neatness was a big factor. What I needed to be done was done before they left for the day. The owner came by and we went over everything. I pointed out at the only one thing that had not been done and it was done right away. The clean up was okay. It was fine and there was no problem with that.

Ace were very responsive and replied to my initial inquiry within 24 hours and performed the work 3-4 days later. However, my work turned out to be a little more complicated than we'd thought as when the garden was cleared, the guys uncovered a pile of bricks, pavers and dirt that had come from the next door property - who had also peeled back the fence between our land. Rather than just clearing this and charging me extra - Pat immediately rang me and let me know that he didn't want me to have to pay for this work. I got in contact with the neighbouring property owner and Pat spoke to them, explained all the relevant property regulations and basically sorted everything out for me so that they would agree to take the dirt and debris back onto their land and restore the fence at their cost. Pat really helped with a difficult situation and i will definitely be using Ace when i have the money saved to pave the back yard.
Description of Work: I had a small backyard area that was very overgrown - Pat and his crew cleared away all the plants and debris and levelled out the surface.

He calls himself ?Sir Patrick Allen?. He did not act very gentlemanly on my job. The scope of the work was building front steps for my row house, a brick wall around my patio and a new sidewalk. The work was done well. His workers were professional and courteous. Alas, the same could not be said about Sir Patrick. He kept coming up with new work he wanted me to ok and pay for. When I refused, he became extremely abusive. He badgered me for the final payment before the job was finished. I declined. He yelled ?see you in court? and slammed down the phone. As for him standing behind his work: NOT. A couple of weeks after the job was finished, I noticed that the bluestone cap on one of the new brick pillars was not attached. I sent him an e-mail asking him if he would send his workers to attach it. He responded promptly. The one word answer in his e-mail was: NO! By the way, on the profile, it indicates that he accepts American Express. I wanted to use my card to pay, but he said that they stopped accepting American Express some time ago. So it might be time to remove that payment option from his page.
Description of Work: Removed existing front steps and railings. Removed existing brick wall and pillars. Removed existing sidewalk. Re-built steps with brick and bluestone. Re-built patio wall with brick and bluestone. Poured new sidewalk. Fixed cracks in wall near steps.

I met with the member on May 14, 2011. When I pulled up to the house, I saw the front staircase was covered with caution tape. It was dilapidated and upon visual inspection in imminent danger of collapse. There were violation stickers and “stop work” orders covering the front door. I immediately had a feeling this job would be trouble. My assumptions were confirmed as the member handed me an Inspection Report from the Commissioner of the NJ State Department of Community Affairs with FIFTEEN serious violations that needed to be addressed and remedied before July. These violations ranged from unsafe handrails, hazardous sidewalks, damaged steps, shoddy tiling, lack of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, faulty fire alarms, etc.. Upon first meeting, the member was very pleasant. She told me she had hired a local town contractor who was not licensed nor did he take out the proper city and county permits so the job was shut down. She almost begged me to estimate the work (because they would evict her tenants) and although I had my concerns, she found us on Angie’s List, so I agreed to look over the violations and send her a proposal. On May 16th I waited 3 hours at the Inspector’s Office to meet with him and find out which permits were needed, the costs associated with them, and any other concerns he had. Afterwards, I returned to the member's residence to go over the proposal and the Inspector’s comments with her. I advised her of the other violations that needed to be addressed which she did not mention to me in the scope of work but were brought to my attention by the Inspector - the lower staircase, the concrete underlayment on the steps, and the crumbling front retaining wall. She advised me that she wanted to complete all the work needed in order to satisfy the Inspector and the Inspection Report. I gave her the first contract which I prepared with the original scope of work. She signed the contract and gave me retainer for us to move forward. Four days into the job, several county and city inspectors showed up. They inquired about the other violations located on the front exterior of the building and asked if we were contracted to make the necessary repairs. I tried reaching the member for several days. When she did get back to me, she told me she was in Nantucket on vacation. I told her about the visit from the Inspectors and she gave me a verbal directive to complete the additional work, not listed in the original contract. She said we would settle up when she returned to New Jersey in 5 days. When she did return, she loved everything that we did. When I gave her the additional work order for the work completed under verbal authorization, she stated “I didn’t sign a contract, I’m not paying for that work. If you want your money, sue me.” I was stunned. In all my years, I have never been deceived like that. I knew from the beginning that there would be problems on this job and I should have used my better judgment. We did not get paid for $6,900 of additional work that had been completed. I did not seek legal action because I should have had a signed legal contract. It indeed was my fault for trusting that the member would honor her verbal agreement with me. At that point, I decided to cut my losses and move on to my next job. A few weeks later, the member sent me an email asking me to reattach a loose bluestone pillar cap. I knew the loose cap was the result of the rail installation completed by whatever installation company she had contracted. The rail company we recommend and work closely with is very careful with rail re-installs and speed of vibrations which if unmonitored could cause these pillar caps to loosen. The member did not use the rail company we had recommended. I went out to inspect the pillar cap the next morning and as I had expected, the rail drillings had damaged the cap’s seal. I did not want to touch anything, knowing someone else came in and improperly set these rails. We always have and continue to stand by our work. When we left the site, we had successfully performed the task the member had hired us to complete. All masonry work, although completed under false pretenses and harshly unpaid for, was in compliance with city, county, and environmental codes.
