Response from Ace Masonry & Builders
When I first met with the Member to give him my estimate, I verbally quoted $25,000. The Member then changed the scope of work and omitted a few things so when I emailed him a written proposal, the quote had lowered to $20,000. The Member called me a few days later and informed me that he had hired another contractor to complete the work but asked me to come back and give him a quote on his driveway. I went out and took a look the next day. I called the Member twice while on-site. He didn't answer his phone and no machine had picked up. I tried reaching out to him the following day as well with no luck. The Member called me Saturday afternoon (2:05pm) a week later. The quote I had given for the driveway may have seemed high to him because it was not a quick and easy task - and it wasn't JUST the driveway that needed work. The concrete sidewalk slabs in the front were not set properly and were at improper elevations. This meant that along with replacing the driveway, I would have to demolish the existing slabs in front and replace them all with new slabs so that they would mend in evenly. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, trained to see what needs to be repaired and what has been done incorrectly, I noticed many imperfections in the work completed by the other contractor. I pointed this out to the Member, merely giving him my professional opinion that the work he had completed would not last. My intention was not to make him feel "ripped off". In fact, my suggestions were made to encourage the Member to call his contractor to come back and redo the shoddy work to prevent any problems in the future. As for having an attitude as if I "couldn't care less" that couldn't be further from the truth. This was my third visit to the Member's house in the last year. I had no problem coming back after not getting the original job I quoted. We've given free estimates since the start of our business in 2003 and always encourage the homeowner to obtain 3 prices. Although we might not be the cheapest, we definitely do great work. Sometimes it's worth more to know you've hired a reputable contractor who will complete your job with knowledge, skill, and most importantly perfection.
