The work went very well.
Description of Work: They repaired an underground drainage system that had been dug up when we had a gas line installed. The clay drain pipes leading from the gutters in two places had been broken. Our house was built in the 1890's. They knew exactly what to do and put in piping very quickly to replace the broken pipes. This was important since the ditch that had been dug went right up to the foundations of the house and we were getting water into the basement as a result of the broken drain pipes. Patrick took care of our problem in a very timely fashion. They recovered the ditch that had been dug, leveled the ground and planted grass. I would highly recommend this company. This is our second time using them and we will certainly us them in the future.

Description of Work: Ace workers are excellent and they are concerned with their clients being satisfied with the quality of their work! I am very satisfied with all they performed for my home. My blue stone walkway was crumbling and the grout had disappeared, as were many of the blue stone steps along the side of my home. Ace gave me an estimate to perform the work and they completed the work within two days after beginning which was very impressive. My walkway from my driveway to my front door looks brand new so I thank them for their excellent craftsmanship!! Thank you Angie's List!!

BAD
Description of Work: This guy thinks hes a savvy business man. Comes to my home and spends less than 2 minutes, takes 3 pictures and walks out. And of course he doesnt forget to mention all the GOOD reviews on Angie's list, but when I have to call 4 times, leave messages, and get no call back, then its time to move onto to someone who is serious. Because he didnt listen to what I actually wanted, he missed things that I asked for, and didnt properly look at the area for the work that I asked to be estimated, so didnt have a complete estimate for the work. And he threw some numbers over the phone to me, with no written estimate. Then I call back to follow up for a written estimate at least 4 times, left messages, and no one gets back to me. BE WARE before you choose someone like this. In my opinion, someone who you CANNOT get in touch with BEFORE they start a job, will leave you HIGH AND DRY once they do get the job. Needless to say, I went with someone else. I cant deal with contractors who give me the run around..and thats what you get.

Response from Ace Masonry & Builders
I visited the member’s home 3 times because the first two times he was not on site to meet with me. I gave him an estimate in person on Monday, July 23, 2012. He then called the next day and I gave him the price again over the phone. He proceeded to call Friday and asked for a price on a retaining wall which was not mentioned during our site meeting. Because I had taken photos, I was able to look at them and give him a price. The member had many questions regarding materials. I was not “throwing numbers out”. I was telling him what it would cost using the different materials he was requesting. He insisted I did not need to file for a permit, which is against the law. The member also wanted the job done under his direction, in a way I could not insure. He kept changing/adding things to the estimate. He did call back asking for a written estimate. I didn’t send him an estimate because at that point, I did not want to illegally do the job. Here at Ace Masonry, we strive to make the customer happy by providing workmanship we stand behind and materials we can guarantee. I’m glad the member found someone better suited to his needs and I wish him the best of luck.

Terrible
Description of Work: I had called this contractor for a concrete estimate. He gave me an oral estimate of $25 K. later when I received the written estimate it was changed to $20K. Still I had someone who was cheaper and would do the same job for less. A week later I called this contractor back to see if he could give me a quote on the driveway and he said he would come by during the week and get an estimate. He came and never called me back. I called him back the following Saturday and he had an attitude about the work the other contractor did. He told me he didn't do anything for the money I paid, trying to make me fel like I got ripped of. I didn't want to discuss that with him because the work I had done by the other contractor was modified and still much cheaper than him and I didn't want to argue with him. I told him that was behind us and asked if he had a quote for the driveway. I was told that it would cost $8,500. I feel that is really high and he told me he's not cheap but that he does good work. He had the attitude that he couldn't care less if he had my business or not. What a change from the first time he seen me. He felt just because I called him for a free quote that I was obligated to hire him. I just didn't like his overall demeanor.

Response from Ace Masonry & Builders
When I first met with the Member to give him my estimate, I verbally quoted $25,000. The Member then changed the scope of work and omitted a few things so when I emailed him a written proposal, the quote had lowered to $20,000. The Member called me a few days later and informed me that he had hired another contractor to complete the work but asked me to come back and give him a quote on his driveway. I went out and took a look the next day. I called the Member twice while on-site. He didn't answer his phone and no machine had picked up. I tried reaching out to him the following day as well with no luck. The Member called me Saturday afternoon (2:05pm) a week later. The quote I had given for the driveway may have seemed high to him because it was not a quick and easy task - and it wasn't JUST the driveway that needed work. The concrete sidewalk slabs in the front were not set properly and were at improper elevations. This meant that along with replacing the driveway, I would have to demolish the existing slabs in front and replace them all with new slabs so that they would mend in evenly. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, trained to see what needs to be repaired and what has been done incorrectly, I noticed many imperfections in the work completed by the other contractor. I pointed this out to the Member, merely giving him my professional opinion that the work he had completed would not last. My intention was not to make him feel "ripped off". In fact, my suggestions were made to encourage the Member to call his contractor to come back and redo the shoddy work to prevent any problems in the future. As for having an attitude as if I "couldn't care less" that couldn't be further from the truth. This was my third visit to the Member's house in the last year. I had no problem coming back after not getting the original job I quoted. We've given free estimates since the start of our business in 2003 and always encourage the homeowner to obtain 3 prices. Although we might not be the cheapest, we definitely do great work. Sometimes it's worth more to know you've hired a reputable contractor who will complete your job with knowledge, skill, and most importantly perfection.

Pat from Ace Masonry's office called right back to me and we scheduled a visit the same afternoon! He was very pleasant and professional. He informed us that the lower staircase was hollow; we had several cracked steps. His crew of 4 came over the morning right after scheduling the repair. They did a 2 day repair in 1 day and boy it looks great! Pat is hooking us up with M&D Arts to install the railings. Not sure if he is on the list, but after dealing with Pat and crew I can feel nothing but confidence in their fine workmanship and professionalism.
Description of Work: Our front steps cracked and had bricks falling out. The railings were the cause due to them not being sealed properly.

We met with Patrick and liked him very much. His quote was $2600 higher than the mason we ended up using but the reason we didn't use him is because he wasn't able or willing to give us any references so we weren't comfortable going ahead. He gave us printed sheets from Angie's List with good ratings but we wanted to see an actual job and that never happened.

PATRICK SPOKE TO THE MEMBERS FIVE TIMES AND WENT OUT TO VISIT WITH THEM TWICE- ONCE BEING ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON AT THEIR CONVENIENCE. THE ADDRESSES OF SOME RECENTLY COMPLETED JOBS IN SURROUNDING TOWNS WERE GIVEN TO THE MEMBERS FOR THEM TO VIEW THEMSELVES - BUT WE DID NOT HAVE ANY STAIRCASES COMPLETED WITHIN THAT YEAR LOCATED IN THEIR TOWN TO SHOW THEM. (WE DO NOT GIVE OUT OUR CUSTOMERS' TELEPHONE NUMBERS OR E-MAIL ADDRESSES, AS WE RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY). AS FAR AS THE COST BEING HIGH, WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WERE 2 OTHER ESTIMATES, ONE ABOVE OURS AND ONE BELOW. THEY NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING ABOUT THE PRICE BEING UNREASONABLE AND THAT'S THE LAST WE HEARD FROM THEM. IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT THIS REPORT WAS POSTED BECAUSE WE DID NOT HAVE A JOB TO SHOW THEM IN THEIR TOWN AND THAT THE REPORTS ON ANGIE'S LIST WEREN'T SUFFICIENT ENOUGH FOR THEM.

what was said was done within expectations and time and budget. all in all a great experience with these guys.
Description of Work: Pat and crew did 2 jobs. Repaired and resurfaced our steps and underneath's storage area. Work was quick and reliable. Any issues were resolved timely. They also installed an Anderson Frenchwood slider by our patio. Involved a lot of chipping out old concrete, installing a new steel header and re-concreting/sealing/painting. Ordering the door was seamless and the work was done in a few days. All calls were returned. Pat and his crew offered additional advice where they saw fit as well.

Mr. Allen returned our calls promptly and gave us a bid within 24 hours of measuring the job. He began work when promised within a few days of signing the contract. His crew worked steadily for three days and completed the job just hours before a late snowstorm hit. Mr. Allen suggested an addition to the project that enhanced its value. He also came back twice to do additional small jobs not in the original bid.
Description of Work: The job consisted of replacing a concrete walkway with pavers, building a small staircase in our backyard, and building a patio in the backyard with pavers. We also wanted some stucco applied to two cement block piers and a cellar door platform. It also included replacing limestone treads on our front steps.

I can honestly say that is was a pleasure working with Ace Masonry and Builders and I would recommend them to anybody. I called Pat at his office on a Saturday afternoon hoping to leave a message to set an appointment up for the following week, to my surprise he answered and was at our house within two hours to give us an estimate. Once I met him his confidence and knowledge was visible and made me feel at ease from the get go. The job was a big job with big number and he was able to make me feel comfortable knowing the job would be done and done right, which I am happy to report that he kept his work. His prices are great, his team is a group of skilled workers, the final product is beautiful and his is a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: I would like to use this site and opportunity to convey my pleasure in working with Pat Allen and his team of skilled workers at Ace Masonry & Builders. Originally Pat was hired to rip up a 100 X 20 driveway and replace the original concrete with new concrete. During the planning phase of the project, Pat recommended that we go with pavers instead of re-pouring concrete because the price difference would be insignificant but the added value to the property tremendous, which we did. During the work phase, his team worked extremely hard at getting the job complete. During this phase Pat also recommended that we throw a designer circle into front of the circle (at no charge), which we did (and it looks great). The job was performed in less than 6 business days with a price well below any estimate I received. Once the job was complete, Pat replaced the grass surrounding my driveway to ensure the final product was visually stimulating to not only me, but also my neighbors.

They were on time and courteous. They were finished in a specified amount of time. They were the neatest contractors I've ever worked with, not a speck of cement. They never even stepped on my lawn because I'm very particular about my lawn. They were gentlemen, were very nice, and took instructions well. They completed the project aesthetically perfect. It was exactly the way I wanted it. There's 75 feet of wall and 18 feet of it needed to be constructed. They blended the constructed part in perfectly and it fit well with pre-existing landscape. His prices were extremely reasonable for the amount of labor he sent. He called afterward to ask about my satisfaction. I am very satisfied and I'm already planning my next use of this company.

They had seven guys working on this project and the concrete is already starting to crack. They were very careless and threw concrete all over the place. I even had cement on my windows. I could not even have my lawn mowed because of all the pieces of the concrete in the yard. I called the owner and he sent someone to clean up for me. A young guy started cleaning up, but then the owner showed up before he was through and pulled him away to another job. I told the owner that he was not done and he took a whisk broom, brushed off the steps, and said that it was done. The owner was very inappropriate and I reported him to the Better Business Bureau. He called me and asked why I did that and told me that it would hurt his business. I felt like he took advantage of the fact that I was widow. They did a terrible job and I would never recommend them.

WE WENT BACK TO THIS JOB SEVERAL TIMES TO ADDRESS ALL OF HER MINOR PROBLEMS. SHE PUT IN A REPORT TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU WITHOUT CONTACTING US FIRST TO COME INSPECT HER "PROBLEMS". AFTER RECEIVING THE LETTER, WE WENT TO HER HOUSE IMMEDIATELY AND REMEDIED ALL OF HER CONCERNS. SHE THEN WROTE INTO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU STATING THAT EVERYTHING WAS UP TO HER STANDARDS SO I'M CONFUSED AS TO WHY SHE WOULD LEAVE SUCH A NEGATIVE REPORT. AS THE OTHER REPORTS SHOW, ALL OF OUR WORK IS COMPLETED PROFESSIONALLY AND IS OF HIGH QUALITY. WE AIM TO LEAVE ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS SATISFIED. IF SHE HAD MORE GRIPES WITH OUR WORK, SHE COULD HAVE CONTACTED US TO COME OUT AGAIN. THIS ONE EXPERIENCE IS NOT A REFLECTION OF OUR WORK BY ANY MEANS AND REGRET THAT SHE CHOSE TO GO THIS ROUTE INSTEAD OF CONTACTING US DIRECTLY.

Great. They arrived 4 days earlier then scheduled for demo and masonry work. They worked every day, all day for five days. They were all courteous and helpful, providing suggestions and attending to any questions or concerns that I had. I ran short of bluestone and they never told me, but went and got a few more pieces to finish the job without extra charge. They patched up some holes in the brick that I hadn't seen. I had concerns about my shared wall with the neighbors to be sure it was water-tight for them since my side was to be an exterior wall and my neighbor's side would be interior. (It had rained overnight and they got water on their side). Ace did come back after a final walk-through to patch up and really seal that wall again. They cleaned up after, removed all debris and finished in record time....before I was able to buy any patio furniture.
Description of Work: Demolished a back shed space that was attached to our building and accessible through a back door. It was to become a small 9x24 enclosed back courtyard with a pergola roof (roof to be self-built). Ace removed the existing roof and all debris. Put mesh, scratch, and top coat of cement on two walls totaling 30x8ft. Built an exterior third wall of cinder blocks and cement. Patched up brick wall with cement including around air ducts and windows where specified. Laid 1 in. bluestone in cement, 24x9ft. Cleaned and checked drainage system.

The team showed up on the very first day (and for several weeks in a row) right on time, and worked diligently throughout the entire process. They were very attentive to detail, and came up with wonderful solutions along the way for design issues I had. They even gone so far as to expose the blue stone walls and acid wash them so that I could use them partly-exposed in my new basement. They built new masonry steps and pointed all the potential places in the basement that could lead to water issues. Pat and his team worked wonderfully with my other contractors, even when the plumber fell a week behind schedule, which was very frustrating for all of us. Pat kept his good humor about him, and rearranged his work schedule to finish the job on time. I could not be happier with the work Pat and his team did. Ace Masonry completed a very difficult job, on time and on budget. I could not recommend him more highly. We plan to hire them again this spring to rebuild our exterior steps.
Description of Work: We needed to have a huge job done in our basement to make it more livable. I needed to have at least 2.5 feet of earth removed (excavated) to make the ceilings high enough to work/live in. In order to do this, we would have to have an entirely new foundation system underpinnings put in place under our brownstone base structure. The installed new lolly columns, and did a fantastic job with demolition and debris removal. Pat and his crew didn't blink an eye at the demands of the job. They immediately met with their structural engineer and planned a way to excavate, underpin, build new masonry steps, acid wash the bluestone walls, point the crumbled section of mortar and pour new concrete floors in my basement.
