This was a very good experience. They came and gave me a great estimate of the job the FIRST time. The clearly described exactly what they would do, when they would do it, and how long it would take. They answered all of my questions to my satisfaction. The day of the job, they arrived on time, moved all of my things in the basement out of the way and began working immediately. They completed the job on time and replaced all of my things back into the basement and cleaned up after themselves. Since the installation of the drains and pump, my basement has been dry and no sign mold or dampness. All in all I was very pleased with the work done and I would use this company again.
Description of Work: They installed drains and a pump in my basement to eliminate flooding.

In October 2011, an early snow storm knocked out our electricity. We attached the new Mid-Atlantic sump pump to a gasoline powered generator to keep it running. The pump stopped working and our basement flooded. Attempts to reach Mid-Atlantic were futile. The pump stopped on Wednesday morning 11/2, a service man arrived (reluctantly) on Thursday afternoon 11/3. The first time we were able to speak to a manager was the following Monday, 11/7. He told us to call back on Wednesday, 11/9. A production manager came to our home on 11/15 to evaluate the problem - thirteen days after the original event. We were promised that we would hear from them in a few days. The few days turned out to be two weeks after the 11/15 visit and four weeks after the sump failure. They ended up installing a new, more powerful pump and reimbursing us for the damage to our basement.
Description of Work: We contracted with Mid-Atlantic to improve the water proofing in our basement in May, 2011. The work was completed on time. two old sump pumps were removed and replaced with one that we were promised would be more efficient. The French drains were improved. The work was completed in June 2011.

Response from Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing of NJ
At the time, we had just been hit by two significant storms: Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Pumps will not work without electricity and the customer declined to purchase a battery backup system. Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing went above and beyond the call of duty to reimburse this customer for the damage caused. We continue to honor our warranty.

Overall, I would say the company is professional. Like any company, they're out to protect the bottom line and the sales tactics can be misleading (not being upfront about the possible need for a "lip" and not thoroughly exploring options with me. But, buyer beware! Make sure they tell you all the possible issues with your particular basement before signing. And don't accept the first price. I later found someone who had the same work done for $7,000.
Description of Work: I waited some time to write this review because I wanted to be fair to the company and to those who will read this review. I was quite upset after the waterproofing job done at my home, so I gave myself a cooling down period. I hope this review is helpful to someone. The estimator came out and did a typical sales job. The original price was $14,000. and we turned it down. This company comes in high and will come back with counter offers. The "manager" came out and got it down to $10,000. (rounded off.) Given all that they said they would do, it seemed fair, plus there was a guarantee that other companies were not offering. The first job (yes, they had to redo it) went off fine. Little dust as they promised and they worked effectively and got it done in 1 day (perimeter is 100 ft around). The problem was a good "sales job" that didn't tell us of the possibility of a 1" x 14" lip around the basement. Once they had dug up the entire perimeter, the workman comes up and tells us that our foundation doesn't have a ledge, so the cinderblock is resting directly on the concrete slab. I later learned from a carpenter that they should have been able to tell me this before they dug since the cinderblock is a full block at the base of the wall. If it was partially below the cement floor, it would indicate the presence of a sill plate. Despite not liking the idea of a lip, I was told it was only 1 inch. What he negleted to tell me was that it would extend about 2 ft from the wall, rendering my basement useless (finished office, work area, laundry). To their credit, within a few days another manager came out and said they would make it right. They went against their policy of a certain thickness of gravel and leveled the "lip". They even repaired the sheetrock that wasn't a part of the deal originally. However, this time the concrete and sheetrock dust blew all over my house (all 3 levels!!!) It was a nightmare. We are finally getting back to normal, but I would caution anyone thinking of using them or any waterproofing company to investigate if they can safely install the system without the so-called "lip" and still guarantee it. So far, everything is fine. Time will tell if shaving off the lip causes any problems with my foundation or the waterproofing system.

The service was performed on the date and time that was scheduled as agreed. The crew and an onsite manager was at my home from start to finish and explained in detail each step was being done. They worked continious except for lunch and to take water breaks and bathroom breaks. They came early and did not finish each day until after 5:00PM. They cleaned up their mess daily and advised me of the time that they would return the following day. When the job was completed we asked them to move a drain outside that we were not happy with the location. They needed additional PVC pipe and said they would return the following week and move it to our specifications and they kept their word. A final insprection was done and all was good. Great work on their behalf.
Description of Work: Mid Atlantic sent a huge crew to tear out all of the concrete along the entire perimeter of the basement. They laid pipes and put in stone and drains so that we all the water that was contained in the walls would drain out. They then proceeded to install two marine sump pumps with back up batteries in case of a power failure. They cleaned up after themselves and placed deoderizers in the basement to eliminate the smell. The entire job took around three days to complete. Now we have another room to enjoy in our home and we were able to completly restore the basement with a beautiful family room. Thanks to Mid Atlantic we have added more equity to our home. Thanks Mid Atlantic!!!

They are coming back to replace the battery back up system that went bad at no charge, which would have cost me $2,700 They are the best contractors I have had in years. I would recommend them very highly with no hesitation. I have been very happy, confident, and no problems at all. They always stick by their.

I can't say anything about the quality of the work this company does, but their sales tactics are horrible. They first come to your house and give you an outrageously high quote. To give you an idea, my first quote from mid atlantic was in the range of $15k, and I ended up getting the work done for $2250. Then they call you a couple of days later telling you that a better price is available and a supervisor will come by to discuss. This person is the pusher, he tells you they will do it for $9k, but you have to decide here and there. He will not leave your house without you explaining to him why you don't want to do it for $9k and what else you are planning to do. He also tells you all the bad things that will happen to your house if you don't do what he is suggesting. Then, a couple of days later, they call again, saying another better price is available and they need to send somebody over to my place again to discuss. I declined at that point and asked them to not call me again, since I got really sick of this sales tactics. It looks like they give you are really high quote and try to push you to accept it, and then they slower lower it until you finally give up and agree.

When calling, I was able to book an appointment the same day for later in the evening after my workday for around 7:30pm I believe. Steve Crowe was the salesperson/expert and he arrived fifteen minutes early, while I was eating dinner. I usually appreciate when people are early, but not this time. Anyways, Steve seemed very knowledgeable about waterproofing a basement and from that perspective I would say that I am satisfied. What I didn't like was the strong, pushy, sales tactics used. He was there from 7:15pm until 10pm, even though the actual review of my basement took only about 30 minutes. While I did appreciate him going through the services, materials, and credibility of his company, the duration of this took insanely long, with most of the time spent trying to force us into a decision that same night. The first price he gave was approximately 18K, which was way higher than expected. After thanking him for his time and telling him that we would consider it, he said he had an idea as to how to lower the price. He said something along the lines that they were doing a huge job at a development and that they could give us the same pricing as the development, after checking with his manager of course, lowering the price down to $14K. We thanked him again and told him we would consider it. He was pushing really hard for us to book that same night, asking us over and over why we were hesitant to book that same night. It was literally an exhaustive process and I'm sure that is their intent. I've had other companies in since then and their first price was their final price and their meetings were kept to an hour. The very next morning, while at work, Mid-Atlantic called me about 4 or 5 times throughout the day, never leaving a voicemail. The day after that, another 4 times, again no voicemail. Since my appointment with them, a few weeks now, I would estimate that they have called me about 40 times, never once leaving a voicemail. Do yourself a favor and do not put yourself through this. You can get your basement waterproofed just as well or better for cheaper elsewhere, without having to deal with what I have gone through.

The guy that came to the house and he was a real salesperson. He tried to trick us, he quoted us a price of 16,000. He brought in pictures of horror stories from other companies and really bad mouthed these other companies then after 2 hours in my house he tells me that if I book him in the next week that he'll lower the price to 13,000. Then when he found out we were talking to other companies he wanted to lower the price again but I thought he was a scam arrest. I signed a contract with them but then cancelled it because we found another company that we trusted.

They were very prompt, professional and kind. The salesperson came and took the time to answer all of our questions and really took the time to make sure we understood the process. He really took the time to inspect our home inside and outside. He pointed out a few other areas that we needed to have fixed as well. They provided the best bid so we are scheduled to begin work on Nov. 2. Update 11/4/11: They started the job on Nov 2. They were here on time. They called the day before and said they would arrive between 8-9 in morning the next day. They got here around 9am. Five men came and did everything they told me they would do. They were very quick and helpful. They worked right on through the whole day and left around 5pm. They cleaned up very well after themselves, after the job was done. My husband was very impressed, and I’m very happy with them as well. I would definitely use them again if I had the need. I really liked their warranty. The representative that we spoke with took his time with us and was very thorough in his explanations.

The first time I was scheduled for an estimate the window was 6 to 8pm. The estimator called at 7:30pm to say he was running behind at least 45 minutes - I chose to reschedule. The following day an estimator was prompt at 6pm - his chosen time (not mine). From the moment he arrived he was rushed, patronizing and antagonistic. He seemed more interested in leaving than providing me with information or trying to answer my questions. The more questions I asked, the more frustrated and terse he became. The bid was the highest I received and their product is comparable to the other 3 companies I received bids from. The worst part, however, was the fact that they had the gall to call me on Sunday morning at 10am - while Hurricane Irene was still in progress, and told me that they reviewed my bid and they would be willing to cut the price if I would speak to them right then and agree to the job. I had been evacuated from my home, had yet to see the damage there, and Mid-Atlantic is calling to drum up more business trying to take advantage of a very grim time for New Jersey residents. Needless to say, the conversation was short and I commented that I felt they were unethical and had poor business practices making such sales calls at such a stressful time. Don't waste your time with Mid-Atlantic.

The whole process was extremely messy and we expected it to be. They did cover up our stuff and do the best they could but a lot of dirt was tracked in and out of our house through our den. It took a few days for the cement to dry, but when it was we kept touching it and realizing that we were always getting a powdery residue on our hands. When we tried to clean it up it was still there. We realized we were never going to be able to paint it when we repainted our basement floor which was our plan. When we called Mid-Atlantic, they came back and looked at it and told us there had been some kind of problem with the cement they had gotten from their supplier, but they could spray some chemical on it and it would be okay. It was weeks before the guy finally came back and did that. For the most part that worked (except the areas he missed!) but when we went to paint we also realized what a poor job they did cementing overall-not smooth or level with the original floor. To top it all off, after we spent weeks meticulously cleaning our basement, repainting our cement blocks (which we used special cleaner on first), painting our floor, steps, etc. and getting everything neat and organized, we see that the paint is bubbling and peeling near the bottom of the cement block again and in various other spots higher up on the walls. We had our basement waterproofed because of dampness, mildew and efflorescence which was ruining things we stored down there and causing our paint to peel. Over a year and a half later, the basement still smells damp (despite the fact we run a dehumidifier constantly), I've had mildew on clothes I store down there and as we said, the paint is bubbling. We've never had water on the floor, but we didn't before the work was done either. We were told by the salesman (very high pressure) that if we had this work done, we could use regular latex paint on the cement block (as opposed to waterproofing paint) and would never have to run a dehumidifier again because our basement would be so dry. We feel totally ripped off and would never recommend Mid-Atlantic. Oh and by the way the salesman also said if we did want to use our dehumidifier, they could tie it into the french drain so that we would not have to empty the water collection bucket all the time. We asked him to have that done, but it wasn't.
Description of Work: We had a French drain installed around the perimeter of our whole basement. The cement floor was jackhammered and dug up first, then the drain was installed with some kind of edging and the floor was cemented over. Air vents were also installed near the top of the walls and a pump installed.

The work went fairly well. There are a couple of things that still need to be done. I still need to have them work on one corner, which I am not happy about. I contacted them about it - I need to fix something first before they can complete the work. They were fairly neat. They put plastic covers to prevent the mess from spreading all over the house. They wanted $11,000 for the work, but I got them down to $7000. I may use them again in the future if necessary.

They layed a 3 1/2 inch hose or pipe to collect water and covered it with pebbles and concrete. They said they could do it in two days and they did it in a day and a half. They had a 6 man crew that were easy to communicate with and would listen to what we wanted. They cleaned up after themselves including sweeping, picking up and disposing of all unwanted materials, including hosing off the driveway when they left. In terms of pricing I do not beleve this sytem should be compared to a French Drain which much less costly. If you really want a dry basement this is the way to go, I'm not saying it's cheap I'm saying you get what you pay for. I also purchased a battery backup generator in the event of a power failure. This cost an additional $1000.00 but could also be used for my freezer in cast we are on vacation and get a power failure. That is included in the $13,000 price tag.
Description of Work: Mid-Atlantic dug an 18" wide 12" deep ditch around the entire perimiter of my basement after cutting an 18" out of my walls to install their water management system. This is not a French Drain, it is a water handling system with two pumps on either side of my basement. They layed a 3 1/2 inch hose or pipe to collect water and covered it with pebbles and concrete. They said they could do it in two days and they did it in a day and a half. They had a 6 man crew that were easy to communicate with and would listen to what we wanted. DID NOT USE!!! Had 5 different companies provide estimates about 5 years ago. Four companies had estimates in the $3000 to $5000 range. Mid Atlantic's estimate was over $13,000. A week or so later when they called to ask if we had made a decision yet. In hearing that we hadn't, they offered to "greatly reduce" their price. I said no. They called again with the same price reduction offer. The price reduction offers made me feel as if they were just ripping me off with the first estimate.

I didn't hire them.Although the initial saleman's presentation was very professional, my time is too valuable to put up with multiple visits, phone calls, and quotations especially when their quote was the highest quote around.
Description of Work: Initial quote was very high. They offered me a discount on the spot if I would book it on the spot. I didn't. They continued to call days after to offer even lower prices after the salesman left if I would allow a "chief inspector" to come out and see the site. I was pleased with Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing. They were recommended to me by a coworker who had used their services in the past. The inspector that came out to give the estimate was very knowledgable and was willing to answer all my questions. Once the job was booked the team that did the work was great. They were on time, professional, and made sure that my house did not get dirty. They also left my basement in great condition when they left. I would recommend them to others. So far my basement has been dry. I would get dampness where the floor met the wall and that has not happened since the work was done.

Terrible Experience: Overpriced, inferior workmanship, damaged my lawn, landscaping and basement windows. Arrogant sales and installation personnel, office staff is trained to reject your service request. Salesperson guaranteed walls and floor of entire basement. Work crew was led by the most arrogant uncooperative foreman ever. Pushed the crew and the job to be completed in one day well after dark 9:00PM. Damaged basement windows, lawn and landscaping. I canceled payment in order to get them to correct inferior installation. My most recent experience 09/09 was a service call against the guarantee. I still have water coming through the walls. All three pumps failed after 3 plus years. They did replace 2 pumps but wanted to charge me $1500 for their battery backup pump.I did it myself for less than $500.00. The service person was nice and very helpful. Maybe they are turning things around. If not for the guarantee I would stay as far away from this company as possible.
Description of Work: Basement Waterproofing: Installed perimeter drains and 3 pumps, 1 with battery backup. 3 return visits were required to correct improper installation of perimeter drains. An additional return visit required to apply an epoxy like coating to 1 of the basement walls. Subsequent service call 09/09 to replace pumps Partially covered under guarantee.

I had no problems with them whatsoever. They did very good work and were neat about it.
Description of Work: They came in and ripped out a previous job gone bad including a French drain. They expanded the job and added tiling. They also smoothed the concrete to match the existing concrete.

I saw their rating on Angie's List and they had a negative rating so we canceled the contract immediately. They called us back and we explained the issue was reading about their poor follow up and ratings, but they don't understand that. I wouldn't consider them in the future unless their follow up response had greatly improved.
Description of Work: They have been out twice. They came out and gave us a very high estimate, $15,000.00. We weren't interested at that time. Months later they called back and sent somebody else out who lowered the price. The price was much more reasonable and we signed a contract.

The job went very well. It took about 2 extra days than originally stated but I am very pleased. The workers left the basement floor cleaner than they found it. They even washed the efflorescence off the cinderblocks and I have not seen any more again. You can negotiate the price a bit.
Description of Work: Replaced sump pump and added a battery backup. Installed another sump pump in opposite corner of basement. Removed about 14 inch width of cement around the perimeter of basement to install French drains. Poured fresh cement to repair basement floor.

Very stressful with them pounding away at floor. Fairly messy. They didnt protect existing carpeting very well or at all in some places. I now have countless stains on it. It was a two day job, but on the second day they worked until 8 or 9 pm. Also, demolished a brick fire hearth without permission. And yet somehow they managed to tunnel under the boiler and hot water tank platform. Also they put several scratch marks on a toilet seat. Very poor communication. I called on numerous times as they took an extension cord, eventually got it replaced with one that was broken! Later realized I was taken by the salesman.
Description of Work: Broke up basement floor, dug trench with appropriate grading to one new sump pit (all ready had two). Drilled holes in cinder blocks. Filled trench with rock, French drain, waffle board and cemented up. I dont recall exact price, was it $7,000 or $17,000?
