Description of Work: I had called several plumbers for correction of a leak, but Kook was the only one that answered my call. They gave us a tentative date on Monday (the call was on Friday). They called early Monday morning to confirm and arrived about an hour later. They determined immediately that it was a shower overflow from the apt above. Together we spoke with the apt above and found bad sealing on the floor outside the their shower stall where a small overflow had occurred. As it turns out, my own shower had the same problem, but I hadn't had a shower oversflow that got on the floor. Both the apt above and I agreed to be very careful about overspills on the floor and get recaulking done at some point. No plumbing repairs were needed. I am very happy with the outcome.The apt below me was also very happy the problem was discovered. I recommend Kook & Son for plumbing needs.

Description of Work: Kook & Sons replaced our furnace and water heater after a water main broke and flooded our basement. They took care of the entire replacement, including permits and inspections, and even ended up refunding me money after permits turned out to be cheaper than expected. They were more expensive than other quotes I got, but I have through sad experience become happy to pay a premium for reliable and honest professionalism.

Description of Work: Howard Kook is a thief. He charged $135/hour in labor and when it came time to pay for the work, his guy told me for the first time that he charges for TRAVEL TIME! So my gas dryer hookup that should have cost $135 cost over $400 because he charged two hours for travel. He should have either clarified the policy or turned down the job. Do not trust them.

Description of Work: Putting in faucet,drain and pipes for tub- all work above floor and not into a wall. -replace one toilet tank fill valve I saw from prior reports they were expensive but when quoted $135 per hour on the phone I thought still I would go with it. Meanwhile when 2 guys arrived, one standing around most of the time in assistant capacity, little did I know they would charge double that so at $135 per person. I was told at the end they were giving me a break on second person amount -but they still charged an additional $202.50 for this second person so $675 for labor for 3.5 hours which comes to second point. If you hire them, clock moment in and moment out. Rounding up remotely adds up big time and I was not fanatical about watching as I did not realize I would need to be but, i had thought 9:15 to 12, plus 15 minutes to write bill. Thirdly I provided 98 % of parts including pipes, faucet, drain, etc. They used approximately what would have cost about $20 at Home Depot, if that, and I was charged $135 for materials. Work was rated good instead of excellent becuase I was not happy that instead of collecting water initially from faucet before water cut off to test drain leakage, they drained a bucket from my hot water heater after water cut off. I now have 2 faucets I will have to take apart as directly after they had left I discovered they had little or no water flow and still do not several days later. I am guessing between liklihood of stirring up rust in heater and abrupt cut on of main water line (I always do gradually, old house, old pipes) they dislodged something which is now blocking faucets. I have never had this happen before in many times, years of water turn off and on, so am guessing from actions and results to be honest about this last point. The two guys were nice, courteous, clean with space and professional acting.If the company had quoted a price on phone in a more honest way I would not have felt taken advantage of this way and would have had the opportunity to choose them or not based on price.Up side, they did make an appointment right away and showed up and did the work. I have such low standards in NJ after living in maine for workers and prices that I am not sure how to judge except with above facts.

The technician that came to do the work was friendly and very professional. He assessed the repairs that were needed and wrote me an estimate on the spot. The work was completed in a few hours. I would definitely use them again.

+ 0 moreThey were professional, courteous to me, respectful of my apartment, and at every turn told me that getting them to come out on a Saturday would cost me more (i.e., no surprises). I had called other plumbers and no one else would even come out on a Saturday (or work at another time where I wouldn't have to stay home from work), so I was grateful they'd do a Saturday at all. The only issues I had were that because it was a Saturday, they would not take my Angie's List coupon (the coupon did not have this caveat) or credit card (which I was not told - fortunately I had enough in my checking account).
Description of Work: He unclogged my toilet, looked at a few pipes, and gave some advice that could potentially save me a lot of money down the road. Because they came on a Saturday, I had to pay time-and-a-half - I knew that going in and decided to do it, however.

+ -1 moreThe whole job took about an hour. The plumber had a very difficult time removing the old kitchen faucet. It was about 30 years old or even older. He replaced it with an expensive faucet (cost $250). It was a Wolverine brand that was all brass. The plumber explained to me his company only uses high quality products. I also had new supply lines installed as well as shut off valves. The plumber did not have one part for the shut off valve so he had to improvise. He was neat and courteous. He gave me useful information for future kitchen and bath remodeling projects. He left me to dispose of the old plumbing materials which I thought that the company was responsible for disposal of materials. I thought the price was about $100 too high; however, the company was responsive to my call. I have tried getting plumbers in my hometown to give me estimates to repair or replace a leaky faucet and my phone calls were not returned which is why I decided to use this company.
Description of Work: The plumber removed the old kitchen faucet and replaced it with a Wolverine all brass kitchen faucet. He also installed new supply lines and installed shut off valves.

+ -1 moreThe guys were supposed to come in on Friday morning. Got a voice mail 15 minutes before saying they weren't coming until noon. Well, if you work, and plan for a morning (off), you know that this type of situation isn't agreeable to your work schedule. We agreed for a Saturday meeting. The whole time, the price was agreed at $140. When their man came in, they found out they would have to shut the valve for the building (which was discussed), and all of sudden he raised the rate to 140 + 270. PLUS $270. Give me a break. I asked them to leave, and I would not recommend these guys at all. If they get a sense that you are under pressure, the rates go sky high. It was a first time experience with them, and I won't be ever calling again. Just to be clear, the actual gentleman that came to do the work was a fine person. His name was Chris. The person that is his boss (Howard?) is not. The grades in this report are reflective of my dealings with the owner.
Description of Work: The work was supposed to be about fixing a leak in the bath tub in my condo unit. The hot water and cold water knobs (when turned off) still let some water into the tub that is corroding the spout, and "eating away" at the caulk.

+ -1 moreI woke up to find a water leak in the ceiling of our 2 family house. Called Kook and Son, and they were there in less than 3 hours. They found the leak from an old pipe in our wall, and worked to fix the broken pipe -- removing half a ceiling to get at it. It was a big dirty job, and they were great! Cleaned the place up wonderfully, had all the supplies needed on-hand, and were in and out in a matter of hours. The problem was fixed, and they even did follow up with my insurance company to help me get a reimbursement for the damage done to my bathroom.
Description of Work: We had a broken pipe in the floor of our upstairs bathroom that was leaking thru the ceiling of the downstairs bathroom in our 2 family house. The ceiling had to be removed in the lower level to expose the pipe. The pipe had to be completely replaced.
