Great. As usual. We've worked with Joe Shoback and team multiple times over the last few years. Their workmanship is superior to others, and the price is reasonable. Plus Joe and every one of his team members are a delight to know.
Description of Work: Joe & his team designed a new door for our laundry closet. This was not a simple project, it had to fit with a limited space, had to activate the internal light (when the door was opened), and couldn't interfere with the tub holding the W/D. And it had to look nice. As usual, Joe's team (Milan in this case) did a top notch job. The new door is beautiful, and blends beautifully into the hallway where the closet is located (as opposed to the previous door which broke, and was an eyesore).

I signed onto Angies due to a unit in my owner occupied house that needs a lot of work. From Hudson I received an estimate for an exterior door to be replaced. Needing alot of work in this rental unit, I expected a loss-leader proposal in order to obtain an entre to all of my work. Two weeks after the very professional walk through, I got an estimate- two days of work at $800 a day and materials of $650. After looking around more (Jersey City is a tough place to find good reputable inexpensive contractors) I got the door replaced, with a storm door and another sanded at a total combined cost of $800. Total time was 4 hours of work.
Description of Work: Estimate for an exterior door- claimed need to have whole frame removed and replaced. Total estimated time - 2 days and total cost of $2,250.

Response from Hudson Home Improvement LLC
Dear (Member name removed)- We always appreciate feedback from our customers, even potential customers as in this case. We were planning to completely remove the rotted frame for the door opening, re-frame the door opening, re-point the affected brick to make it waterproof and set the new exterior door with a storm door with a built-in screen system to make it all water tight given the water damage observed in the building and to prevent future water damage. We could have hung a door like your contractor did for $800 also, but we wouldn't have been happy with the outcome. We wish you goodwill finding the right contractor for all your future projects. It was a pleasure dealing with him and his company!
Description of Work: I called Mr. Joe Schoback and asked him about the repairs of 6 termite damaged joists and the basement stairs. He told me that I needed drawings from an architect and that I needed a permit for the job. Additionally, he asked if I had an architect, and I asked him to suggest one. After I had the drawings I asked him to give me an estimate for the work. He was punctual in his appointments and his price for the work was a good price. We did not choose his company because we had another company doing another job and they gave us a discount on the existing job if we gave them the joist repair job also. Mr. Schoback was very professional and discussed new state of the art materials which were low maintenance for use in the repair of the basement stairs something I truly appreciated. It was a pleasure dealing with him and his company. I would consider his company on future projects!

My overall experience was very positive. Joe came out on a Saturday to give the estimate, which I greatly appreciated. From the very beginning, he was very professional, giving us an explanation of the work to be done and answering all of our questions. Our estimate arrived a couple days later, and while it was somewhat higher than I had originally thought, it was still reasonable. Also, the job was relatively small, and some other contractors were unwilling to take it on (too small). We were left to buy the tub and tile, but Joe gave us the needed information and contacts to find what we needed. There was some miscomunication about getting the tub to the job site, and I ended up having it delivered by the vendor. I found out later HHI could have picked it up for us, but that was not clear from the get go. On the first day, the crew showed up on time, and Joe was there to get things started. They put down protection on the carpet, floor and furniture (mostly dust for the latter), and got to work. Joe left after the first hour or so, but left one of his project supervisors (Mark) to keep an eye on things. Joe also stopped by a couple more times that day, and in the following days to check on progress. By the end of the first day, they had removed the old tile and tub, brought the tub (~300 lbs of cast iron) up the stairs and into the bathroom, and hooked it up to the plumbing. The next few days involved squaring things up, installing the cement boards, and applying the waterproofing. After this, they installed the tile and shelves. We were unable to get an exact match on the tile to the existing, but he worked with us to come up with an aesthetically pleasing solution. About the only caveat I would add is that given the rapid progress on the first day, I thought that they would be able to get the job finished sooner, but on the subsequent days, the crews were not there as long as they were the first day. But I want to stress that they DID finish within the agreed upon timetable. I was just so impressed by the effort of the first day that I thought they'd finish early. I was very happy with the quality of work, as well as the professionalism and courtesy of Joe and his workers. I would definitely use them again and recommend them for bathroom remodels. I can't speak to their performance on other types of projects, but I would imagine it would be quite good as well
Description of Work: Hudson Home Improvement completed a shower renovation for me in Hoboken, NJ, Specifically, they completed the following work: -demolition and removal of the existing tile in shower area -removal of existing bathtub -installation of new tub and hookup to existing plumbing -squaring of wall -application of waterproofing -installation of new tile -touch up paint work -drywall removal Work did NOT include: -purchase of new tile -purchase of new tub

From start to finish, Joe and his associate, Mark, were a joy to work with. They came quickly to do an estimate - even though this was a small project. They had a good payment schedule and started by ordering all the products for the job. All the new merchandize except one item was in within 10 days and as soon as mdse was at my home, they started demo. Demo was one day and in that day they also laid the leveling agent for the new tile floor and installed the new toilet in the smaller bathroom. Day 2 the company they recommended to spray the tiles, did that work and Hudson Home Improvement was on site and installed the sink and faucet in the other bathroom - so the smaller bathroom was working completely on day 2. Day 3 the outside company checked the spray work and Hudson Home Improvement put in the new floor tile, and then one day later (Day 4) we had fully grouted floor and a second working toilet. The last piece of merchandize came in a week later, the vanity, and as soon as received, it was installed and the following day the new marble top and faucet was put on that and the job was complete. Both bathrooms look great. They kept the work area clean, removed the huge amt of garbage and got us working again as quickly as possible. First rate work and communication all around. And as the owner of an older pet, they were terrific with our 13-1/2 year old chocolate lab, letting her outside and spending a bit of time with her when on site. She became so comfortable with Mark and Joe, that she didn't even wake up for one of their visits. One other challenge for our job is that in the tile spray work, we wanted to preserve the trim on the tile - top and bottom were to remain burgundy and the aqua tile was to be sprayed white, and the towel racks, soap dish, toilet paper holder, etc were to remain burgundy. The company Joe recommended did a good job and Joe and Mark made sure our wishes were honored and we have exactly the look we want. I recommend Hudson Home Improvement as highly as possible. They are the BEST!
Description of Work: I had work on 2 bathrooms in my house. The simple one was replacing the toilet and sink and faucet. In the other bathroom, the work was more extensive - demo tile floor and lay new tile, spray old wall tile white, install new toilet, sink, vanity and faucet.

I described all in previous ? to reiterate.. there are much better more attentive cheaper companies around here that I event spoke to, to do jobs of this nature. I wanted help and guidance, and he was not there to assist in anyway.. i only saw him once for initial meeting then, he just sent two of his guys to do job and he called to see who things were doing?. not a fan at all?
Description of Work: I needed my room repainted- it is a large room-and it was three colors white for ceiling and doors and moldings, light blue for walls and then darker blue for dummy wall. I also needed him to switch out the outlets and the liigh switches to new ones. He overcharged a lot more than I expected to be charged, I never saw him.. he sent to guys iI had never met, and they were there from morning tip after 12 at night… it should have been a two day job. at first it looked good, but i expected all cracks and drywall and ceiling bulges and errors to be fixed and all that, which i noticed a month or so after that none of that was addressed. I messaged him in march april or mayish to come and take a loo to fix it.. and he just never had time and he never came by… I could have gotten it painted cheeper and done a few other things i want done for what I had paid…. I would use someone else for future needs...

Joe accompanied me to the lumber yard to help select the new front door. There was a long wait for the door to be delivered, the lumber yard's fault not Joe's. The project generally went according to plan, it was done within a week, as scheduled.
Description of Work: Joe's workers remodeled my basement. They installed a new set of stairs leading up into the home, a new door in the bilco stairwell, they prepped the floor for carpeting, framed out and built a new wall separating the main area of the basement from the utility room. They also built a half-wall for a bar, complete with granite counter, and wet sink. They installed plexiglass windows into the new walls, to allow natural light from the utility room windows through into the main area. Everyone who has seen the basement thinks they did an amazing job. It is now a functional living space instead of a dingy storage area.

The project took a few weeks, and pretty much went as expected. Whenever I had a question, Joe was always responsive if his workers couldn't answer it.
Description of Work: A complete kitchen remodel in a one bedroom condo that my wife owns as a rental property. It was pure 80's style, including 2-tone formica cabinets before they demo'd the kitchen. They removed all the old cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Removed the old flooring. Installed new wood cabinets, granite counters, new stainless steel sink and appliances (fridge, dishwasher, stove, microwave), new tile floor. It looks fantastic! They have a great attention to detail.

When we call Joe for an estimate the first time, he was very upfront and honest about the time and resource estimate. Since it was our first time dealing with contractors, we really appreciated his realistic opinions. His team was very professional and friendly. During their work, they made sure to cover all our furniture and floors with tarp and on their last day did an extremely thorough job of cleaning. They were respectful of our neighbors - including keeping doors closed during construction and not using the hallways for any storage. Our neighbors didn't even realize we had work done in our apartment! He kept us informed of updates on a daily basis and was always responsive to our questions, which was much appreciated. Couple times he went above and beyond and gave us great recommendations on certain things for the bedroom. For example, he built a closet in the new bedroom. Instead of installing the simple rod for hangers, he installed shelves for us which he did not charge extra for. Another example: we have this little nook in the bedroom which would not fit any furniture in it - he recommended that we put built-in shelves there and also then he also stained them to match our furniture for no extra cost. Joe and his team worked very well and got the job done very much on time. I would undoubtedly hire or recommend Joe and his team again for any future work at our apartment.

We were working on a kitchen remodel and called Hudson based on their Angie's List reviews. They were very responsive and came out promptly. They asked all the right questions and shared their ideas on our project. We told them our proposed budget and they said they would see what they could do. They got back to me promptly and let me know that they couldn't do the project we envisioned with the budget we had. I suspected this would be the case so I wasn't too surprised but I appreciated them taking the time to work with us.

He was not on site except for twice that I know of. Had I not been on site watching his workmen they would have used inappropriate materials. For the wall board I specified that they used cement board. If I had not been here to see they were using tack board on the wet spots, which is not waterproof, they would have explicitly ignored my instructions. Also, I purchased all the tiles, tub, toilet, and fixtures for my bathroom. I also contracted the shower encasement door on my own. All they did was gut the bathroom and install the material that I bought. His base price was $3500 unless I exceeded a certain amount of money in value of goods. What sense does that make? I don't think there should be a correlation in how much I spend for a toilet and how much he charges me. I don't know what I got for $3500.

Joe and Hudson Home Improvement were outstanding. I saw their positive reviews on Angie's List, called Joe to come for an estimate which he did within a few days. I had a detailed quote in a week as promised, and they started work the day I signed the contract. Work took 2 weeks from start to finish, which was great. They removed the old backsplash and countertop and began electric work for new under-cabinet lights on day one. They cleaned and left the kitchen in good shape and removed all the demolished items. They had a templater in to measure for the countertops. The countertop sink and faucet were installed within a week and although not finished, we had a working kitchen again - all within a week. The backsplash and grout and sealing of tile soon after that, and the electrical work was completed and lighting installed all in the next week. Joe kept me informed throughout the project of when they would be doing what and what to expect. They were always on time and kept to the budget. They accommodated my large but gentle dog without a problem. His contract was fair and straight-forward. I purchased the tile and faucet where Joe suggested and saved on both those purchases because of his contractor discount. My redone kitchen is beautiful. I could not be happier and my husband was amazed and pleased that I had found such great contractors to work with. I will definitely call Joe again if/when we do any more renovations.

During a recent storm, I noticed that one of my windows was leaking from inside the frame. After seeing positive reviews here, I sent Hudson Home an email. Joe called me the following evening, and we discussed possible causes. He seemed really knowledgeable, and I made an appointment for his team to come out and re-caulk the windows. At first he said they'd come out the following morning, but towards the end of the call, he said "the next day or two". Well, it's five days later and they haven't come. No phone call, no follow-up, no rescheduling attempt. Haven't heard from Joe again. Business must really be good if this is the way they can treat customers!

We called Joe based on the perfect record here on Angie's list. Joe was very professional in handling my call - returned my phone calls, promptly scheduled an estimate, and arrived on time when we agreed to meet. His quote was easily 50%-70% higher that other quotes we've got, however we still decided to hire him, figuring "you get what you pay for". Inter alia, one of the things we wanted him to do is to install two shutoff valves under the kitchen sink. We signed the contract the same day. As we got ready for him to start the job, he realized that the job would have to entail freezing pipes as my apartment doesn't have a central shut off valves, and my building would not shut off water in 250 units just for him. He immediately asked for more money because his own costs went up. When I explained to him that the contact didn't have a provision to be reimbursed for his increased costs, he flat out refused to start his work, and became very unresponsive in both emails and phone calls. My wife was under impression that "he had a bigger fish to fry, and thus he was unmotivated". Whether that's true or not, I don't know; however his behavior violated our written contract, and was unprofessional. Finally, two weeks later, I decided to cancel my contract with him; he quickly agreed to do so, and he promptly refunded my money. Meanwhile I wasted two weeks of my precious time, and endured unnecessary stress - not happy about that at all.Overall, based on this experience, I can not recommend this contractor to anyone.

Response from Hudson Home Improvement LLC
The project was to paint his entire 2-bedroom apartment, install a new granite counter-top, install 2x new shutoff valves under his kitchen sink and do some other minor handyman items in his apartment. Even though I was very busy at the time, he was close by in Jersey City and mentioned he wanted to renovate his house in Livingston that he was in the process of purchasing so I agreed to do the project. As for the price, I did my best to educate this customer on what he was getting when he was 'comparing' pricing. He mentioned he was getting his friend, and I quote "part of his Russian mafia connection" from Pennsylvania that would live in his house and do all the renovation-kitchen, knocking down walls, basement, painting, molding, and floors. I explained that comparing a licensed contractor like myself with licensed plumber, licensed electrician, architect, town permits, building department inspections, general liability and worker's comp insurance was much different to hiring the 'Russian mafia' that would live in your house and do all the work himself with no permits and no inspections and no insurance. The dispute surrounded his shutoff valves under his sink. I've worked in many buildings in Jersey City and Manhattan and have not encountered one which will not allow a water shutoff-this building requires the plumber to 'freeze' the pipe to make a new connection. I thus informed him my plumber was not experienced at this technique and I therefore did not want my plumber practicing on his job. I informed him I would get a different plumber and we would see how much the cost is and work something out. Normally people are appreciative when I inform them upfront of an issue. I spoke with the building's plumber, explained the situation and he was willing to do the project for me for $100 more than my usual plumber. I told the customer it would be no additional cost to him. I explained I needed to get a copy of the plumber's insurance and that may take a few days and we could not start the project until I have this. Then the customer gave me a scenario regarding his new house if we were doing that project - what if there was a problem inside the wall in his new house when we take down the wall. I informed him if there was a major electrical issue or termite issue that ethically I would have to inform him and it would be his decision to correct it and he would be charged for it. He was upset at this comment, screaming that I need to do due diligence, etc prior to starting the project. I informed him I could take apart every outlet in the entire house, cut a few holes in the walls and that would mitigate some of the risk associated with any bad wiring inside his walls. I told him I would charge him for all this investigation. More yelling from him at this - saying that as a 'general contractor' I'm expected to 'eat' any unforeseen problem costs. I was trying to educate him on how to mitigate his risks-that's what a general contractor does, not 'eat' unforeseen issues. Normally people understand this and are appreciative when I inform them of risks, issues and dependencies. Based on his behavior, we both decided it was best to part ways and refund his deposit. It was a relief. Keep in mind that I had already given him 2x estimates - one for his apartment and one for the house he didn't yet own. I invested a lot of time. He told me he was unsatisfied and upset with the estimates he was receiving on his new home, he told me he threw one contractor out already and that several contractors refused to come over to his home to give estimates and that others were not getting back to him. Based on his behavior I'm unsurprised he was having these issues. I only hope his 'Russian mafia' contractor solution works out well and no-one calls the Livingston NJ building department about the work he is doing with unlicensed, uninsured and potentially undocumented personnel. I do wish him luck.

Joe was very prompt, down to earth, and straight forward from the very beginning. We are first time home owners with no experience in home remodeling and a budget we could not afford to go over. Joe was instrumental in providing insight and alternatives to our plans. We moved to a neighbors house just across the street during the home repair. The workers were on site just before we left to work in the morning. They worked quickly and thoroughly. Joe checked in throughout the renovation and all went smoothly. The only problem we encountered was a change of mind with paint colors we had selected, however this was quickly changed to our liking. Overall we are very happy with Joe, his workers, and our brand new home that was handed back to us about one month later.
Description of Work: Complete sheet rock, plaster, primer, painting, and molding of entire small one family house. Also, refinished hardwood floors on first floor including stairs, installed carpeting in two rooms upstairs, and new laminate floor in enclosed front porch. Finally there was light electrical work throughout house and installation of all new light fixtures and ceiling fan.
